You need a pair of shoes and they'll make you run on a treadmill, ask you some questions and you'll be fitted for what shoe fits for you. From there, they have gear you want to wear running. And for those us (myself included) who aren't runners, they have comfortable clothing you will wear daily for comfort or for your own workouts. You go deeper if you're new to the Twin Cities and join a free group run, which is multiple times a week to keep you going. You might even find a date there, it happens oddly often. If you're one of those people who need to run a marathon, you'll see them during the Twin Cities Marathon yelling in the 20s mile area, getting written up in the local neighborhood papers for being too loud. From there, you want them to succeed, and you want to join them. Then you see their brand everywhere. In every race in the Midwest, you will see the brand name. Been 5 years so I thought I would update my review since I started running a bit. A 5K here and a 10K there, nothing too wild. Great staff and still has a great selection of shoes and apparel. What I learned by running myself is their fantastic shop runs that they put on several days per week and on every other Saturday, they have the assisted long run or "ALR" where there a lot of people, maybe ~100 all running different distances and paces on pre-set routes, like a 5K, 10K, 10 mile, etc. so you can pick a distance and pace and probably have someone to run with. They also provide Strava maps on their site so you really will not get lost. Best part is that these runs are free, they do it just because they love running and the running community. I absolutely love Mill City Running. I have been coming here for all things running related since I was in XC in high school. They have incredible service, awesome selection, and are truly runner focused. They offer tons of resources and guidance for people looking to get into running. My daughter's XC coach recommended Mill City for their gait analysis and youth athlete pricing. My daughter is 12, wears a size M 11.5, and is an XC rookie. Our Mill City ambassador was mega patient and understanding with her selections to try. I truly felt like the most important person that day. I decided to get fit for shoes for all the walking I do as a downtown resident. I have at times struggled to walk even half a mile in my previous non-fitted shoes. I would tire easily and often get pain in my knees, legs and lower back. I was fitted with a 3D scan of my foot as well as having the salesperson watch me walk and then trying on several different shoes from different brands based on my feet size, width, arch and walking style. They all felt similar but settled on a pair of Hoka Men's Arahi 6. Wow! What a life changer it has been to have the proper shoes fitted to my feet. I tested the shoes on my way home and ended up walking 3 miles home. When before even walking .5 mile would bring pain. My average steps from Apple Health has increased to 10,000 and at the end of the day I don't feel sore or tired. Sometimes, at night I look at my watch and I am shocked at how much I have walked in the day.I have lost 10 lbs. from being able to walk and exercise pain free, and my resting heart rate has dropped 20 bpm. I have already gone back to get a second pair just for going out! I Didn't get a fitting the second time but I received excellent service! I have even brought my wife and Sister to get fitted and they love their shoes after getting fit as well. Post Covid update: I haven't been to group runs in years at this point and I don't even know if flap jack Friday's is a thing... I went in there to get a new sports bra. You can imagine that sports bra shopping is about as much fun as swim suit shopping in the worst way. I was also carting around a very tired two year old. I say all that to set the stage for what I was assuming would be a fast and frustrating trip to my favorite running store. I was wrong and happily so! The lady that measured me for the sports bra kindly humored my little and measured her as well which went a long way to appeasing her grumpiness! The layout is new and improved! I came here for the first time to attend the Glaze Run and we had a blast! I can happily say I have fulfilled my dream of eating 4 donuts, while simultaneously living my nightmare of running a lot. The staff was so nice, organized, and helpful. I enjoy running but I'm not a "runner", and I was a little nervous that my lack of experience would be super obvious. I'm happy to say, they were so cool about the various needs of everyone there. They had a variety of distances and pace groups available, so I didn't feel obligated to step too far out of my comfort zone. They had a lot of great merchandise - if we hadn't been on our way out after the run, I would have definitely stayed to browse. I LOVE Mill City Running, but I have not spent a dime there. I go pretty often for their beginners' running club on Tuesdays at 6 pm. You show up, go upstairs, get in a circle, answer the question of the week, and choose what pace and route you'd like to run that day. Mingle! Talk to people either before you go out for the run or while you're running. Everyone is SO friendly. The reason I love this store so much is because it's more of a community than a store. It makes me feel like I'm part of a team, and they're always willing to help. My boyfriend has pretty bad shin splints and pain in his lower legs when he runs. We asked for some pointers after a run once and they didn't try to sell us anything, just gave us tips and ways to relieve and avoid pain. Amaaaazing. Whenever I come into the store, someone says hello to me directly. I have never felt obligated to buy anything (although I will want to buy my next shoes from them!) and I always feel welcome. Mill City Running is the best place to buy running shoes. They are truly knowledgeable about running and want you to find the perfect pair. The staff are so patient and stuck with me trying on at least 20 pairs of shoes. They analyze the physical characteristics of your feet, do a running test and have lots of shoes you can try on. The staff had some great suggestions for what kind of shoes I should get that really helped with my runs and preventing blisters. They have a ton of merchandise for runners and I've gotten compression socks and antichafing sticks here. It's definitely a must if your a runner. Parking can be a bit tricky and it is all street parking, but well worth the effort. read more

I had gone to said store, however, my latest experience wasn't the best and had known about Mill City from seeing their name on sweaters & shirts. New to the area, I have not ventured to find many local running stores due to the pandemic. However, a certain shoe release had me jumping at the chance to not only check this store out for the first time, but also get my hands on it. This place is legit. A very clean running store with every top brand available for purchase. They have everything from shoes, tights, shorts, jackets, hats, sunglasses and nutrition. They even have some top expensive brands like Maurten, which was a huge plus. Given the pandemic I made an appointment ahead of time and was greeted with hand sanitizer and a fresh pair of socks. They seem to go out of their way to make sure customers and employees are safe. Additionally, they have a running/racing team which I plan on joining eventually. Maybe 2021? They had awesome technology to help find the right shoe, had a ton of options including shoes that are just black and white, and a treadmill to try them out. Jump onto their treadmill and then they'll record your running motion. After some analysis and education, they bring out shoes to try. I tried about 6 pairs before deciding on the Brooks Launch. They have a big selection and have the big names so it's likely you find a pair for you. The employees are patient and listen to your concerns. Parking is a pain, but the staff is full of knowledge and always helpful. They have a pretty good selection for a small place and their hoodies are the most comfortable I've ever worn. I can't speak highly enough for Mill City Running. I discovered the store a couple months ago when I started training for a marathon. I went in seeking help regarding nutrition and was immediately assisted by Jeff. He was knowledgable and friendly. I have gone back a couple times for running gear and more nutrition. I also checked out another store in the Twin Cities and it just couldn't compare. Today I finally was able to go back to Mill City and pick-up a new pair of shoes. He provided information, a variety of options and a calm and friendly demeanor. Following a couple brunch mimosas, I worked up the courage to visit a running store. I've walked by this place quite a bit and have seen a ton of folks around town wearing Mill City Running stocking hats, so I thought it'd be the go-to place to invest in some lighter weight running shoes. It was the best retail experience I've had in recent memory! As a complete fitness novice, I was apprehensive -- however, everyone at Mill City Running was extremely friendly, accommodating, and helpful. I tried on 5 or so comfortable and light shoes and had the opportunity to hop on the store treadmill and have my shoe fit analyzed. Frankly, I was very impressed with this process. It shows the staff really wants you to be happy and find a shoe that fits so well you'll want to run all the time -- not just quickly make a sale. I geared up -- shoes, socks, shirts -- and was impressed by how little I spent. Besides the great shoes, it's worth noting that their t-shirts are ridiculously soft and comfortable.
