I admit it, I have a fountain fetish. I developed it somewhere in my early adulthood. And I definitely got my fill in Montreal and Quebec City. So when I learned that there was this really awesome fountain in Kansas City, I just had to check it out. The JC Nichols Memorial fountain is in Mill Creek Park. To reach it you will go to downtown Kansas City. It is a beautiful stretch of Park land! Seems to be really popular with the locals as well. There were families celebrating a graduation and families taking photos. Even one lady made a picnic with her baby son. It's a great place to bring your pets as well. The fountain itself is amazing. The main sculptural pieces are four horsemen that represent the 4 mightiest rivers in the world: the Seine, the Rhine, the Volga, and the Mississippi. Surrounding the horsemen are children on dolphin. Illuminated, the fountain churns green water constantly and catches your eyes immediately! The green water is a temporary feature in honour of organ donation awareness. The fountain was originally created by Henri-Léon Gréber in 1910. It was Installed in 1960 at its current location and has been renovated a couple times since. Put this one on your to do list when you are in Kansas City next! And check out the beautiful architecture around, too! There's a really lovely mural near the Chuy restaurant, too!

Mill Creek Park is an excellent place to frequent. During the warmer parts of the year the fountain in the park is active. The park has a 3/4 mile circular track with approximately 100 feet of elevation. There is also a workout station with a pull-up bar and other pieces of equipment. This is a great park for relaxing and enjoying the scenery, or working out or walking. I highly recommend this park, this is a great park if you are solo or have family or friends.

Mill Creek Park is not huge but it's an oasis right in the middle of the Plaza section of Kansas City. It's a great park with a historic fountain right at the intersection of several main roads. We passed through the park several times and there were always a number of people enjoying the park and it's amenities. It was a pleasant surprise to find such a nice park right in the middle of a highly urbanized area.

Picture if you will, two built gay men wearing short shorts and tight American Apparel t-shirts walking their big wiener! Well if you see them, let me know. Instead you will see me and my partner trying to get around the loop of Mill Creek Park with our aging 12 year old daschund. None of us built or dare wearing anything too short and definitely not too tight. But none the less, enjoying the beauty and mixed use space of Mill Creek Park right next to the Country Club Plaza. I think it's a great city park. Surrounded by St. Lukes Hospital to the west, Westport to the north, back of Cafe Trio and American Century business strip to the east and Plaza tennis courts to the south. The beautiful JC Nichols fountain sits on the south side of the park. Providing a perfect people watching scenario. In the spring and summer months one is assured to see wedding parties, prom couples and the oh so delightful engagement photo's being taken in front of the fountain. Some beautiful, some tacky but always entertaining outfits and modeling poses! If not being used as a background for any of these photo ops, you will be sure to find kids (and adults) wading or swimming in the fountain. Not my first choice of a swimming hole but I'm not here to judge......just people watch. The fountain is beautiful when blasting water or in a winters frozen state. There is a 1.2 mile circular cushioned asphalt trail that goes around this park. Perfect for dog walking, a little exercise or stroll through the park. There is a little Eco pond on the NE side of the park. Some exercise stations throughout and more than likely some homeless people taking up some space on the park benches, harmless and never seem to be a problem. The middle of the park is often used for volleyball or soccer games. This park gets a lot of use. A lot of charity walks and events take place here. On any given day, you can see a group of protesters lining the south side of the park claiming their stand on a number of issues as cars line up trying to get into the Plaza. It is diverse, it is alive and it makes me feel like I'm part of a big city when I'm at Mill Creek Park.

On a solitary twilight stroll coming from Westport, I stumbled upon Mill Creek Park. And was I quite happy I did. The park is clean and seemed just popular enough for it to not seem desolate. It is on the smallish side (or perhaps I just did not explore the grounds extensively enough) and is just a bit off from the Plaza. Actually, the one end of the park has the beautiful JC Nicholls Fountain which is just across from The Plaza. It has play areas and good trails. If I lived near Mill Creek, I could see myself doing my daily walk here.

Mill Creek Park is sandwiched between Main Street and JC Nichols (aka Broadway) right by the Plaza. There's a one-mile track with a cut-through path in the middle if you'd rather run or walk a smaller loop. There are neat exercise machines every so often around the loops - areas for pull-ups, side-to-side exercises, see-saw-ish things... ha, I have no clue what the proper names for these machines are, but they can take your workout from just a jog to a little something fancier. The famous Plaza fountain with the horses sits at the south end of the park and in late Spring you'll always see kids getting their prom pictures taken or brides posing with their entourages. Good people watching! I docked Mill Creek Park a star because at night it doesn't feel as safe as it could, especially in the hilly part of the loop on the northeast side. There used to be more brush and benches where homeless folks would hang out and do who knows what. I don't know if it's due to vegetation dying over the winter or if the city actually made an effort to trim the brush down, but it's looking a lot clearer and less creepy in the evenings now. Sometimes you'll catch a drum circle, people playing soccer, cute dogs, families laying out on blankets... who knows? It's nice, go out and get a little sun!

Pretty little park and fountain. I was told this plaza is a replica of a town in Spain.

The open greenspace, the beauty of the paths, or even the rose garden in season makes for a sensational day at the park. There are photo op spots at virtually every corner of the park. If the fountain is going in the rose garden, then it is a popular place for a bushel of pics. The swale in the middle of the park, lined with bald cypress trees, offers many shady, comfortable spots for a picnic or just a rest. String yourself up your own hammock between trees and catch a cozy nap or a comfortable spot to read. Check out the raised placards for a memorial of the Battle of Westport, emphasizing Kansas City's part during the Civil War. Everyone loves a little history, and to do so looking to the west and learning about that conflict 160+ years ago, you can actually see it in your mind's eye. To place that memorial with beautiful green space is a nod to how Kansas City makes the most of its public real estate. Park in any number of lots or even find a spot on one of the side streets. Restrooms are open in nice weather, and there's plenty of spots in which to reserve a pavilion. Outstanding Kansas City landmark!

After running amok with all the other children of KC indoors and having lunch, the rain had let up and we thought it might be good to get some more energy out before heading home. My cousin recommended we stop by this park, which she remembered was close by. To be fair, I had pretty low expectations but I was so pleasantly surprised by this cool spot. First of all, it's not a generic park at all. You've got a giant sea monster made out of concrete and play structure that is made have the look and feel of a pirate ship - it's so fun for pretend play, and such a unique concept for a public park. My kiddo LOVED the sea monster and got such a kick out of it. Aside from that the park is a really good size and you've got a pretty standard playset next to the pirate ship, some swings, and loads of things to climb on, including some play rocks, which I think is a nice touch and sort of compliments the unique nature of this park. 4/5 stars simply because there is some room for improvement - mostly in the restroom area, as they did not look clean/safe, so we used the good ole travel potty for our toddler and made our way home after playing. Overall if you're in the area this is a really fun park for kids and it's worth exploring!

Just a fantastic, peaceful gathering space and I'm so glad the city had the foresight to build this park and not just add more rows of houses. I have many fond memories of moseying down here with my daughter when she was a baby through about age 4 -- perfect playground for that age. Also my buddy Scout, my dog of nine years and I have been here with wind chills of -20, and on summer days in the 100's. There are so many friendly people and we sort of band together with our pups on the coldest days. We found community here with an organic, casual dog meet up group.. I still miss it, my new neighborhood doesn't have the same energy. You'll find it packed on snow days with sledders dominating the perfect sledding hill. Those first real warm spring days give way to people playing baseball, throwing frisbees and cooking out. My only knocks are that there needs to be better crosswalks around here. Cars really fly through this area, unfortunately, and the city could take some better precautions. Additionally there's no bathroom. Funny how when I lived a five minute walk from here I didn't mind, but now when we visit and there's nowhere to go, it's definitely more noticeable. Anywho, it's a true gem for this dense neighborhood.
