We took advantage of the beautiful morning last weekend and checked out Penguin Park. My kids loved the giant animals and all the different play areas. I appreciated the turf vs gravel. They had fun going from each area and exploring. Lots of different structures to keep them busy. The park was very clean. I don't know if it's the unique nature of the one of a kind animal statues, the charm of an old school playground, or what, but Penguin Park is probably my favorite park that I've explored in the Northland. If you have small kids they will enjoy the modern play equipment just as much as they will marvel at the huge sculptures of penguins, elephants, and other zoo animals. I haven't confirmed this, but I heard from my friend that the artist that made the sculptures (some of which are interactive for children), also made the rabbits that go on display on the Plaza every Easter, which honestly makes a lot of sense given how they look. To me, it just feels charming, and I love that it's something that sets this place apart from other parks in the area. read more

This park really appeals to smaller children - maybe aged toddler - 6 or 7. It's very large and has lots of tables to sit. The equipment is nice but again for smaller kids and the large animals are fun for the older kids to climb on. There is a grass area for the kids to play tag or catch a football. read more

Fairly large park with assorted slides, rope playgrounds, swings, giant zoo statue animals to climb on, and more. Like that they have soft green grass turf. Pretty well maintained for the area. I would not visit at dusk or very busy times for possible safety concerns, but during the day on a weekday I was not worried. Perfect for kids of all ages. read more

An okay playground with fairly decent equipment, but the older equipment could use some serious repair. The Kangaroo comes with an odd stench and cigarette butts. Bathroom on site complete with prison style toilet and a door that does not lock. It's not the worst playground we've visited, but there are definitely nicer ones. read more

Great playground for the kids. The oversized animals really trigger the imagination. Lovely walking trail the whole family will enjoy as well. Our kids love walking down to the pond to see people fishing and watch the geese. read more

Great place to take the kids! They have things for every age to play on! The park is divided into 3 sections. Little ones, toddlers, and older kids. This park does get crowded and filled with kids so keep a eye on yours! They have a bbq shelter so you can eat and bring food while you are there. This review is mainly for us parents looking for a great park to take the kids to for birthday parties or just to tire them out. This is definitely the park for you. My precious 5 year old is a total park snob. If the playground equipment is not up to her standard, daddy is commanded to seek elsewhere for her majesty's pleasure. Fortunately Penguin Park rates highly with her... And with me as well. Penguin Park can be found easily on Norton Ave. Just look for the big penguin. The park features a fairly new and well kept array of playground equipment and some old standbys you don't always see anymore (a merry go round, YAY!) The entire area of the playground section is covered in foam matting for safety, major plus and even the older equipment in the park has been well maintained given the care most parks are given. What really sets Penguin Park apart though is their shelter house which is ideal for a larger birthday party. Given what you would pay to host your childs party at some venues, the rental fee for this shelter is one of the higher priced, but still a good value for what the park offers. ($60 M - F, $75 weekends and holidays) The shelter offers plug ins and grill space and plenty of table space and area to get you out of the elements if need be. My only complaint is this park, though pretty big, can get crowded on the weekends and parking can become sparse. We had a great time at Penguin Park. The park has gotten better and better while still keeping the nostalgic feeling. The park has something for all ages. My 6 year old and six year old both equally enjoyed their time there. We went with a friend and her 15 month old son and he was able to enjoy it as well. What a fantastic park! My kids absolutely loved it and could have played there all day long. Although everything is together there are basically three different play areas. One for toddlers, one for pre school age kids and one for older kids that has some more adventerous equipment. All three areas are covered with a foam material so falling won't hurt nearly as much. The big hits for my kids...the merry go round (how many parks have those any more?), the balance beam and the big elephant slide. read more

Drove 30 min to this park and was really unimpressed. The pics look awesome and the reviews were good.. But the place was jam packed and the bathrooms weren't working, the drinking fountain wasn't working and portion of the park was closed.. it's just a park but definitely don't go out of your way. We definitely left when the kids needed to go to the bathroom and there wasn't one. read more

Lots to do and very unique features for several age groups. It's obvious they did not skimp on big, good equipment. Bring a camera for this one! Took the grandkids to Penguin Park last weekend. They had a blast! It was very crowded, since the weather was great, but they still had fun. There are three distinct playgrounds, one for small kids, two for older kids. Everything was in good shape, there was plenty of cushioning underfoot, and the layout worked really well. This park has always freaked me out. It's too easy to lose sight of your kiddos. If you have a tiny one and bigger kids, like I do, they play on different equipment so far apart it's too hard to keep an eye on everyone. It can get so busy some days that it looks like an entire schools worth of kids out for recess. That's just too much going on (meaning lots of distraction) that would make it a perfect place for some creep to snatch a kid. The fact that it's on a busy street makes me feel like it invites that to happen. Has it happened? I don't know. Have I personally had a problem with a specific incident? No, but I have a Mother's intuition that has caused me to keep an eye out if I've had to go there with other people. The park's one redeeming quality is that it hosts the annual Run for a Child. It's actually a great venue for that event. That alone gave it a second star. Use your best judgement of course, but as for me I prefer a smaller neighborhood park where I can see all my kids all the time. read more

Excellent park. The ground is that rubber type of park safe floor.. It made me bounce when I first stepped on it. My almost 5 yr old niece loved it and didnt want to leave. My just 3 yr old niece loved it but wanted to leave after about 40 minutes. Definitely more for kids 4+ read more
