This is an update; I wrote a review in 2017. This boutique is one of very few businesses that has been remained (in the same location) for over 20 years. Their merchandise is consistently above average in quality and fashion. The owners and other employees are welcoming and knowledgeable about their merchandise. I have a tough time with this place. Ok, I'll be honest, I wanted to punch the counter girl, she was uber rude to my mom! I went to the store with my mom ( who is stylish and thin, unlike me). She needed some new clothes. We tried to nicely ask a few questions only to be talked down to, then ignored. I don't normally write bad reviews, but this store left such a bad taste in my mouth. I don't think anyone would mistake me for the knit-and-bitch type. Sitting on subway wearing black rimmed glasses and knitting blanket-shaped orange mohair poncho is not my style. But I do love cashmere, and I especially love wearing low cut sweaters. Contrast of soft wool and glimpse of flesh has never failed me. This season, winning sweater source I found in Mill Valley boutique- small store with very discerning taste. So far I have made two trips here, and both sweaters have served me well, shall we say. I purchase a bracelet from Patty and Heather and twice the bracelet broke. It was very delicate so the artist put a clasp with a longer leather instead of replacing the beads.When i returned the bracelet a second time, the small bead became loose where it attached to the leather band. i was greeted rudely and made to feel unwelcome. I left my name and number hoping the bracelet would be returned on a timely matter.When i went in to ask Heather refused to hear me and left to the back of the store. Later I called and also went into to the store and asked about it, and Patty the owner once again pretty much brushed me off. At this point i just want my money back but be warned before doing business with them. They suck at customer service you On and they pretend to be sweet and don't stand behind their products and don't care. Wow ladies. read more

Now, I'm a big fan of the nearby Baby and Kids Company store, but this is my go to self advised Miracle on 34th Street store for what BandKCo- doesn't-carry-recommendations. The two MV Kids' Stores work so well together that they really duplicate nothing including vendors. I know when Baby and Kids Co doesn't have what I'm looking for (such as kids' slippers, for example), Mill Valley Mercantile will and they do, and umbrellas, and Give a Moose a Muffin author books, and so much more. The adult clothing store connected with Mill Valley Mercantile never offers me the time of day, but that's a different review. read more

First the person who called and held a sweater for me thank you. The young girl at the counter, you need manners. Let's see..."We only hold things for people we really know well" Oh, well the woman who called said it wasn't a problem. "Well, we don't." I had the duster on hold but not sure of the colors. "Well whatever we have is there. I just don't see anything in the back (insert nose wrinkle here)." So what colors do you have? just whatever is there. These are the only dusters in two colors? I was told there were 3 colors. "No those aren't dusters, these are, those are the split sweaters." No, they are dusters and for working in a clothing store you are clueless. You may certainly call them what you like but the rest of us call them dusters. By the way you could just read the price tag to SEE the word duster. "Would you like a bag?" Oh you mean for this $250.00 cashmere sweater? No thanks a barbed wire basket will do. We are all young and clueless at some point but add in arrogance and you just lost any sympathy or patience from me. The store doesn't even have a very good selection of items/sizes. read more

My favorite store in Mill Valley! I would buy everything in both shops if I could. Super cute and cool baby and kids clothes. Interesting, unique gifts and toys. The best place to buy presents. I only wish the women's side of the shop wasn't so pricey. Very good selection and bohemeian-luxe clothes for women with a little jewelry and some purses. But again, it's too marked-up. Absolutely lovely store though. I keep going back, can't stay away. read more

I realize this appears to be a lengthy Yelp review, but please bear with me and read it all: I have always admired the 'look' of Mill Valley Mercantile's boutique. Their 'style/clothing' resonated with my own style. It is unfortunate (for me and, I think, them) that I am no longer a customer. I purchased a white t-shirt there in April or May of this year. I was attracted to it because of its simplicity (which is part of the boutique's style). I had never purchased the brand before. The material was very thin--I was not deterred, but, in retrospect, perhaps I should have been. Although I am a fastidious person with all of my clothes (hand-washing and/or gentle cycle and never using the dryer), it developed a pinprick hole in the front. I took it back and was told that the store would have it repaired. Great--picked it up when the repair was completed. Unfortunately, it deteriorated further (another pinprick hole in front and one underarm was beginning to come apart). At that point, I knew that this particular t-shirt was not a quality product. Took it back again and advised the store employee (a very nice lady). She said the owners (which were not there at the time), would look at it and get back to me. I indicated that I wanted an outcome that was fair--fair for the store, and fair for me. I believed (as discussed with the employee I spoke with) 'fair' would be a store credit. I was not expecting my purchase price to be returned. As mentioned above, I really l enjoy the clothes carried at the boutique and probably would have used a store credit (knowing me) to purchase something more expensive than the t-shirt. I was ultimately advised by one of the owners of the store, that they would not be able to offer me anything (i.e. no store credit). Also, that I my t-shirt would be at the store for me to pick up. I did pick up my t-shirt and advised the store employee (same employee as above) that I was disappointed that the boutique did not stand behind its merchandise. I further pointed out I did not believe this was a fair or ethical decision on their part. I advised I would no longer be a customer. A store/company's business model, in my opinion, should be based on fairness, ethics and trust. Every situation is different. I am disappointed the owners have decided that they do not/will not work with their customers to achieve an equitable resolution. By-the-way, since this past December/January, I have spent approximately $1,000 at their store. I am sorry for their ultimate loss of business from me as I choose not to be a customer any longer. Additionally, I can no longer recommend the boutique to anyone because of the store's less than fair business practices. read more

This boutique is split into 2 shops, children on the left and women on the right. The children's shop full of eye-catching clothing, accessories, and toys ranging from cutesy to cool. I often come here and find special gifts for friends' kids as well as stylish outfits for my little one. Not sure what to get for someone's 5th birthday? They'll put together the perfect goodie bag full of tchotchkes any child would love. There is lots and lots of merchandise, some tucked behind others, so take your time perusing those shelves and racks. You'll find favorites like Petit Bateau but they have other fun items like 'Mill Valley' logo caps. One of my favorite items is the hip Buddha t-shirt and onsie. A happy standing Buddha is printed on the front - available in lots of great colors and sizes start at 3 months. Great for those young style mavens. read more

Left side: The most adorable baby and kids clothes. You will gawk at the prices, but you'll be so tempted to buy that shearling coat for your little nephew or the Buddah tee. Right side: Great women's clothing that carries a number of brands including Lucky, Sanctuary and AG jeans. MV Mercantile has been frequented by many a celebrity, local like Andre Agassi and Hollywood stars like Rosario Dawson. The store is family-owned and run by very sweet, helpful women. This store may not be on the "main drag" of downtown Mill Valley, but it's not hard to find. It is located right next to the Sweetwater on Throckmorten Ave. If you're in Mill Valley, surely don't pass this shop by! read more

I have been shopping here for years. They have many simple, lovely cotton and cashmere items but sadly they do not stand behind their products. After spending thousands of dollars there over the years they were disgraceful in their handling of a product that had problems. The owner even shared with me that once the items leave the store they will not stand by it. So disappointing and upsetting. I will never shop there again nor recommend the store to my friends. read more

I bought a few things at the Goods since it was near El Paseo and moved to Miller. I had an unpleasant experience though with a new-ish sales lady at the Miller av store. There were a pair of jammies with a bold design that I reserved. Two days after, While having coffee next door, I asked my bf if he thought I should buy it and he didn't like it. At that moment, the sales lady from the goods came out of her shop, Recognized me, and told me out loud for everybody to hear that she out my Jammies on hold but I didn't even come back to buy it so she put it back on the floor and sold it! I was aghast that she embarrassed me and did that. Truth is I was in the process of deciding. She needs some tact. Too bad because it's a fantastic store. read more

I understand the previous reviews about the snotty attitude from the owners who work here but as I go here for their beautiful, classic, and timeless clothing I don't let it bother me. I genuinely don't think they realize that they come off as "snotty". I think they get a lot of "look but don't buy" browsers/timewasters who have no intention of buying once they see the prices. Everything is either cotton, linen, silk or wool and priced accordingly. It is not a cheap store. However the clothes they carry are beautifully cut, and of the best fabric. Once you ask a question about an item in the store their passion for the clothes is instant and contagious. I have loved every dress, jeans and shirt I have bought here over the last 5 years, and wear everything till they literally wear out. The mother and daughter team who own this store have impeccable taste and an eye for quality clothes that are hard to find anywhere else. I just wish I had the budget to buy a whole wardrobe of clothes from here. read more

I was riding my bicycle down Mt. Tamalpais and rode into MIll Valley. I decided to come in and check Mill Valley Mercantile. I was there for about 45 minutes. The clothes were beautiful, stylish, relax and sober... with lots of taste! The woman who helped me was incredibly nice to me, who was dressed in my cycling clothes... She helped me find things that she thought I would like. She was so helpful that I left the store in my bicycle with beautiful clothes that I bought in the store... Don't ask how I rode back to my car for the next 5 miles with the bag... but I made it and I love what I bought there! read more

Next time you need a break from the city, head on across the Golden Gate and take a stroll in Mill Valley. Off the main square, you will find a women's boutique that makes shopping a joy. The buyers are the best. They must search high and low for such good quality items. The apparel I have from the Mercantile, lasts for years. It is hip without being tragically trendy. Lasting style should be their motto. Things in my closet from five years ago still look good and they are complemented by new finds. Another bonus is that the Mercantile has great sales. When things are marked down, they immediately reflect a 50% discount. None of this 15%, 20% or 30% tease that you will find at other stores. Lastly, their adjacent children's store has beautiful items both domestic and imported from France. They range in size from infant to teen. It is a great place to buy shower gifts that are something special. Shop it. read more

I was so disappointed in this store. I live out of state and went in the store while I was in town. I purchased a purse and when I got home I tried it on again and was told it wasn't right for me. I never carried the purse, only tried it on. I looked at receipt and knew I had 10 days to return for store credit. I spoke to Karen at the store and she said to send it in. I sent it through UPS and it got there before the 10 day period. I had to keep calling the store to ask if they got it. Then I had to keep calling the store because I was told the owner needed to make final decision. After almost another week, I was told the owner wouldn't take it back because it was worn?!?!???? The purse was in the EXACT condition I bought it in. The owner wouldn't ever call or seemed to never be around, her employee Karen had to relay the message. I knew I would get a store credit not my money back but I feel the owner knew all along she wasn't taking it back. Very sad to know there are stores out there like this:( read more

All though I've purchased wonderful things in this shop, there is the story of my last and final purchase; that would be of my most unfortunate sweater. Cashmere and hugely expensive. It was my worst purchase ever and I had thought this would be the favorite sweater for the cold months to come. After three brief outings, it disintegrated. Seams coming undone, great wads of fluff hanging all over it and it shedded and pilled wildly. When I brought it back to show them what had happened, there was no willingness to make any adjustment. I had thought I could count on their allegiance to quality and I was so wrong. I had made a dreadful choice, it was my loss and they made it clear that it wasn't to be theirs. So, I throw the whole mess in the washer, made a hot water bottle cover from the felted disaster and left the scraps out for the birds to discover at nesting time. At least something would be cozy. So, I warn shoppers to understand that the management will not stand by their merchandise and their own bad choices. Choose very carefully, but the best advice is to shop elsewhere. read more
