We've been going to Sutter Creek, CA as our getaway for a very long time and we stay at the 161 Inn. Kerry the owner recommended we go see Tammy for a tasting. This place is not only a place to taste wine, but cheese too! I tried cheese from Italy, Spain, Switzerland, and Iowa. There were 4 cheeses and wine pairings for $15 each which is a great deal. They also had other appetizers to choose from for purchase. We had the shrimp fritters and they were exceptional cooked to perfection with a lovely homemade sauce. Gary the owner was the chef. It's a unique little shop on the main road right down from Sutter Creek Hotel! Tammy's son also works there Evan, he was busy cutting and weighting cheese to sell out of the cheese case up front. There a couple tables in the front, along with a couple tall tables in the back and a small bar with stools in the far back. The only bad thing is there isn't a public bathroom so you must cross the street and walk about a half block to the public restrooms. We had an early dinner at The Bistro at Miller Wine Works in Sutter Creek, California. Chef Gary Miller is putting out some amazing food in this quiet little town. He changes the menu seasonally, sometimes more often, so you may find different dishes. In any case, you will be very happy! We started with the rosemary ancho hummus. I do not know what he has done here, but it is by far the best I've had. Comes with jicama, cucumbers, scallions, and tomatoes, along with simply delicious fresh made tortilla chips. We also had the two sandwiches along with the potatoes. The "smashed marbles" are fried Yukon gold potatoes with bacon, raclette, corn, and creme fraiche. Simply delicious! One of the sandwiches was grilled cheese with 5-year cheddar and apple slices. The other was bacon and lettuce and tomatillo on sourdough. Both were excellent, and great paired with the potatoes. Finally, dessert was dark chocolate mouse with creme fraiche chantilly and raspberries. Every bit was delicious, and the combination was superb. I strongly recommend you give The Bistro at Miller Wine Works a try. I'm addition to the great did, the service is outstanding, also great wine as well as cheese, how could you ask for more? My husband and I stumbled across Miller Wine Works at the previous location on Randolph Street several years ago. We had heard about the incredible food and wanted to try the pot pie that was on special that week. We were greeted by Jess and we ended up having several entrées to try because we couldn't make up our mind since everything sounded amazing. Jess gave us wine and cheese to try while we waited for our food and we really enjoyed the viognier and decided to have it with our lunch. When the food came to our table we knew we had found heaven. The attention to detail and the way the food was presented was something you would see at a high end restaurant and this of course made sense because we soon learned that Gary is a professional chef on top of a winemaker. When the Randolph location closed we were disappointed but then very soon thereafter, the bistro was combined with the Cheese Shoppe on Main Street in Sutter Creek which Gary also owns, and they soon rebranded- now called The Bistro at Miller Wine Works. Woohoo! We are in Sutter Creek a few weekends a month and we plan our visits around our meals we want to have at the Bistro. Yes it's that good. We appreciate food made with high quality fresh ingredients and attention to detail which is apparent in every beautiful dish. Next time you are in Sutter Creek make sure to keep walking down Main Street past Water Street Antiques, and you'll find the bistro. You'll be welcomed by Tammy, Lori or Sheena and you'll soon know why we go, why we stay, and why we will keep coming. We have tried all of the food and love that the menu changes with the seasons. Gary's dishes are made with fresh ingredients and with a twist. A grilled cheese sandwich with apples or a BLT made on raisin bread?? YES. Somehow the flavors just work magically together! When we leave we always take food home. I love Gary's colorful salads that I can enjoy the next day for lunch. Next time you're in Sutter Creek and you want to be wowed with food and wine, and want to try a different place than the usual spots, be sure and stop by the Bistro so you too can enjoy both culinary excellence and the welcoming atmosphere. They serve lunch on the weekends! We've had lunch here a couple of times and it was great. The small menu changes frequently depending on what is in season. The food is really a step up from other places in Sutter Creek. I had an outrageously good beet salad here. The fact that the wine is really good makes it doubly good. We went home with a case. Cute little shop- It's styled with cute signs and quite a bit of bar seating. We came as part of a wine tasting group and had an assigned list of shops to sample from. This was the first stop of the night and we were lucky enough to be one of the first in the door. We were offered three wines and cheeses to match. We happened upon this place on a Sunday before closing. We wanted to sit outside because we had a dog and the owner was accommodating. I think this place is interesting because of the wine and cheese pairing which is unique. I don't think that all cheeses paired well. There were some that were like whoa I can't taste my wine now. I thought this little wine and cheese shop was quaint and cute. I really enjoyed the wine and cheese pairing. It was a bit weird to have the cheese on spoons and toothpicks, but still was delicious never the less. The wine was all tasty, although I didn't take any home I enjoyed everything we had. The person who helped us was kind and not pushy at all. I liked the cheese a lot too! The blue cheese here was great. I took some home to share with my boyfriend, which I can't wait to break into! Really enjoyed my tasting at Miller Wine Works. It's your pretty traditional wine and cheese pairing which I enjoyed after a day of very unique pairings. It's nothing too fancy but sometimes that's more enjoyable. My favorite was definitely the Zinfandel, however, I was also surprised by how much I liked the Petite Syrah seeing as I am not big on most red wines (besides zins). Our wine server was friendly and eager to chat with us. The ladies in the back were also very knowledgeable about the different cheeses and happy to gives us as many samples as we wanted. Anyone can call themselves a Foodie, but when someone who's spent a good chunk of their life making a name for themselves with food and wine asks if I'm "in the industry" after we've chatted a bit about cuisine, my head swells. My ego grew three sizes that day. Miller Wine Works, also known as the Backward L, is a tiny tasting room on Main Street in Sutter Creek owned by Gary & Kim Miller. Blink and you might miss it. I happened upon it because their double doors were open and the space was inviting. There's also a lot to be said for a good logo and they've got it! I'm a sucker for well executed, eye-catching branding. Kim chatted with my mother and me as I tried out the wines. Most of them are on the semi-dry side, which isn't my style. They were made well but the majority of them were not something I'd go out of my way to buy. It's not that they weren't good; it's simply a palate preference. However, I really liked the 2008 Grenache. It's smooth and slightly spicy. It would go well with many meals without being overbearing. I would have loved to try the Port but that wasn't part of the tasting. Besides becoming familiar with their wines, I learned a lot about the history of the winery itself. Gary Miller was the Executive Sous Chef at Spruce in Chicago before moving to Napa Valley with his wife to make wine. They hadn't had a tasting room before and Kim explained that many of the grapes they were using came from Sutter Creek. They made the move to the area to open up a physical space for people to come in and become familiar with their product. It's impressive that a business relying heavily on taste could stick around without having a storefront, but I'm glad they've made the switch because I'd otherwise have more than likely never gotten to know them. Give them a try! Tastings are only $5 and the fee is waived if you purchase a bottle of their wine. My fee was waived since we'd made a purchase at the Sutter Creek Cheese Shoppe, which it seems has some kind of connection to them. It's lovely to see the shops working together. read more

A wonderful start to our 49 wine tasting tour. We had 5 different wines here. They were all lovely. Paired with goat and cow cheeses. The lady who poured our wine was very pleasant and welcoming. Despite the owners very serious demeanor, it is clear he is seriously passionate about his wines and seemed to enjoy having us in the shop. The wine speaks for itself. There's also cheese in the back! Specially selected by the chef wine owner. Samples galore. Hayley and Jessica? were very helpful and accommodating. Made it to one year with Gary Millers wine club. Surprising right? Would have canceled it a long time ago if I actually went there. Thought joining his club that out of town friends and family would enjoy tasting his wine and pairing with cheese when they would visit. But always took them to the valley. Fall wine club, 6 bottles of his zinfandel.... asked to try it to see if I actually wanted a half case. Response with a no, we arnt tasting that. I asked to change out 3 bottles after that answer. Again a NO. What a joke. Ended up after he made a fool of himself and got my 3 bottles of a different wine. I cancelled my club in an email. Can't believe in a small town this man is sti in business. Today, I attended the Wildflowers and Wine event in Sutter Creek. I was so impressed with all the wineries and food with the exception of this winery. The employees were very inattentive. I was not made aware of what wine I was tasting or the food pairing. There were only two tastings and pairings so I don't understand why this occurred. When I brought to their attention how disappointed I was, the employee stated, "Come back another time when there aren't 400 people tasting." I understand every winery was busy however I was shown the proper attention until I came to this winery and out of all the places we visited, they were the least busy. Unfortunately, not a fan, and disappointed my feedback wasn't taken seriously. read more

We did the wine and cheese pairing $12 per person to taste 5 wines paired with 5 cheeses. It might have been worth it if they had poured more than one swallow, usually when wine tasting they pour an ounce this was more like half an ounce barely enough to cover your palate then you taste the tiny tiny bit of cheese and are supposed to taste the wine again but there is hardly any left. Definitely not worth the $12. I do have to admit that I liked the Grenache Blanc and did buy a bottle. read more

This is probably my favorite place in Sutter Creek. I attended the wildflowers event, which was a wonderful event. The wine was great and the food parings were amazing and so was the staff. They let me know everything I was tasting with great detail, even when it was busy. They were very genuine and made my experience beyond worth it. The store's expert (is her name Laura?) explained their specialty wines and cheeses so well, and how they made such great pairings. She was so much fun, and helpful! My husband and I stayed in Mokelumne Hill, just a few miles from sutter Creek. We have travel 3 hours from Gilroy ca, and visiting Miller winery was in my list of things to do. Upon looking for fun things to do around MokeHill, we decided to go wine tasting. I have previously emailed Kim, the owner to ask a few questions about wine pairing and she was very helpful. Upon arrival, we were greeted and we did some cheese and wine pairing. Although my husband is not a wine drinker, he enjoyed the pairing. I totally forgot the owners name, but he was very polite, courteous and knowledgable! He waved one of my cheese and pairing fees with the purchase on a wine bottle. We stopped in after tasting great wine and having a wonderful experience at Yorba and expected to have the same experience here. There was no one there to greet us and a man came from the back and just looked at us. I said "we were told this was a good place to taste some good wines and cheeses." He looked at me like I was speaking a foreign language and didn't say anything. My husband said "is this not a good time?" It was 4:30 and they close at 5:00. The guy made an excuse about everything being out away because of an event the day before and didn't offer to change that. I guess they hadn't had any customers all day. Now after reading other reviews I see why. He was the most unwelcoming person at a wine tasting that we have ever encountered and we have been to many. My husband said "maybe we will come back another time". I said as we walked out "or we won't", which we definitely won't. If I could give less than one star I would. Avoid this place when you go to the cute town of Sutter Creek. There are many other tasting rooms that are welcoming and fun. read more
