So you're not going to go wrong with a steak. The prime rib here will put a smile on your face unless you have your heart set on gluten free tofu or something. They also have a friendly bar that is mostly locals but so long as you don't sit there with your big city snowflake attitude you'll find the folks at the next table or barstool to be friendly enough. I always enjoy reading the picky, whiny negative reviews over trivial complaints posted by these butthurt children. Want to know why the locals don't like you? Try not being so whiny. These ranchers, farmers and blue collar types work for a living at jobs you wouldn't last five minutes at. Have some respect. I like John Day. Not my favorite little burb in Eastern Oregon but it beats the pants off of downtown Portland. I also like the townies. Well, I tend to like anyone who has a weathered face and hands that have done real work but that's just me. As a Veteran I am always treated well out here. Seems like I'm always sitting next to some Marine at the bar who's eaten some of the same dirt that I did. If you want to be treated well by strangers, try being more respectful. You are in their playpen so park your attitude in the trunk of your Prius before you head inside. I'm already salivating over my next return trip for a real man meal here!

Only one person working dining rooms so service a little slow but she was very friendly and apologetic for wait. Food was ok..... They were out of burgers because cook forgot to take meat from freezer. Shrimp salad was only lettuce shrimp salsa and sour cream. Waitress didn't want to serve with rice and beans because they smelt bad. Salsa was very funky tasting so did not eat. Loaded French dip was very small but good. The chips are fresh to order and home made....very addictive. Guacamole was pretty good and also fresh made. So you def want to give them a try

That might well be true, but we never got that far. When it comes to politics in business, we live by a simple rule. Keep it to yourself, and it's none of our business to ask about it. Put it on some form of display, and if not too obnoxious, we might overlook it. We come to restaurants to eat, not to think about political stuff. Plaster it everywhere on the outside--thus washing our faces in it--and that's a big flipped bird at anyone who doesn't share those politics. They are perfectly entitled to their choice of decor, but in turn we are perfectly entitled to turn around and drive away. Nailing their colors to the mast is a choice, and it tells some customers that they are not welcome. One of two things is true: Either the owners are great with that, or they are unable to see the harm. A lot of money has probably flowed away from this place over the years for this reason, and it's not like the John Day community has a massive population base. Two stars because, while the presentation was so hideous it made us not want to support their business, we can't judge the food or service. But hey, if that's fine with them, duly noted.

Some good photography opportunities and a lot of historical artifacts. There is an interesting information center and historical display up on the hill on the other side of the highway. Worth a stop if you've never been there before. There are hiking trails that go off a ways that I have never gone on but the mile or so round trip from the historic house is interesting enough. They do have staff there and offer tours of the grounds although I have never taken advantage of them.

Also, the hikes got continuously more disappointing in this direction. I do not recommend the River Trail, as there is no view of the river (not maintained?), and I also did not enjoy the Thomas Condon Overlook Trail as it had almost the same view as the Sheep Rock Overlook Trail. I definitely recommend picking up a passport to the National Parks as well as getting your cancellation stamp for all 3 John Day Fossil Bed Units at the Visitor center. Though it isn't marked on the map, there are a couple of picnic tables at the visitor center as well. The Cant house was OK, but don't be too sad if you miss it due to the limited hours. Only the downstairs is open for viewing, and there are only three small rooms of exhibits. I loved the Flood of Fire and Story in Stone hikes!

Some of these kinds of subtleties were a little lost on my kids - especially my 4 year old who kinda got the zoomies looking for a t-rex in this small space.... but the rest of us managed to enjoy it. The kids loved it. The center has tons of great exhibits and info. As for COVID protocols, they had timed entries with limited capacity. 30 minutes didn't quite feel like enough time but we didn't want to stay for another round just to look at the exhibits closer. Overall an excellent resource and worth stopping here. Oh, be sure to take the brief hike up the hill at the south end of the parking lot! Great views from there and there's a bench at the top. Beware of red/fire ants along the trail.
