There are other stretches of the French Broad that are more aesthetically pleasing, but around here, it's a brown snake that doesn't seem impressive. If you pass through the city without stopping here, you're not missing anything given the profligate majestic clear waterfalls in the mountains nearby. However, there is a decent pedestrian infrastructure built up around this bridge, and several restrooms, launch facilities for watercraft, and other useful features. For the more casual or local user, it's at least a waterfront that has been well developed for public use.

Quick hint- if you GPS the actual dog park, you will be taken down a side road and directed to climb down through some overgrowth. Take the normal park entrance and follow the paved path to the dog park entrance. This park is beautiful with huge shade giving maple trees and a wide, well paved path. The dog park was pretty empty on Thursday afternoon due to the rainy weather. However our other visitors who were very welcoming and had very friendly dogs. Stopped by again today, before road-tripping home, and it was just as fun. Lots more visitors and other dogs to play with or just chase. Our dog was even greeted by one of the Thursday people. Just a nice place to spend some time. The area is well kept and they have a good amount of supplies to keep it picked up.

It's true, there aren't a ton of chairs but if you are willing to be patient, you'll get one. One thing to note is that they close the pool with lightning on the radar within a 10 mile radius. You just have to get out of the water for a minimum of 30 minutes. Lots of lifeguards and great decorations for July 4th. You can tell that they take pride in the pool. It was clean and the chairs were comfy, although the armrests do get hot in the sun so you can't always rest your arms on them. It certainly wasn't a dealbreaker. While views of the mountains are likely majestic, even on a cloudy day the misty sights were intriguing. A clean path runs around the lake, connecting bathroom facilities, tennis courts, and several other amenities. There were some dedicated parking spaces, but it was an easy walk from the town's business stretch as well. And why not, if you have the time?

It also leads to the dog park as well which is a super great one that is separated by dog size. It was so nice to walk along the river with my dog on our way to the dog park and I saw people having a picnic next to the river which was such a cute idea that I wish I had. The equipment looks a little outdated but the kids had fun. My oldest liked playing on the basketball court while the youngest mostly played in the sand. The whole vibe at Animal Haven is peaceful and uplifting. You can tell the animals are thriving and…read moregenuinely cared for. They each have a name and a story, and the dedicated people who run this place treat them like family. From potbelly pigs and goats to sheep, geese, ducks, and cows, there are over 100 animals and spending time with them is just really good for the soul. It's free to visit which is amazing, but definitely make a donation to support their endless work or grab something from the thrift store on the way out. This is such a special place and a real gem for the community. I highly recommend a visit.

The self-guided tours are wonderful and the property is gorgeous. The volunteers and founder Trina (her partner and co-founder passed away-- rest in power, Barb!) are such great stewards of the property and such great caretakers of the residents. Once you cross the foot bridge over the beautiful stream, you can visit with all of the residents & you can scan the qr code posted along the way, you will learn the stories of the individuals who live at AH. There is a wonderful thrift store as well! So much gratitude that this beautiful labor of love sanctuary is in the area!
