I signed up for the Sunday and Wednesday delivery, and online access. I was subscribed for 3 weeks, and received ZERO of my deliveries. I reached out to their customer service department several time, and would not answer a simple question: "Will I get my paper today?" Instead they kept repeating that they had issued a credit which I have yet to see, and dodged my question. The customer service department is not responsive through email so good luck there if you have an issue. Online chat? Forget it. Very rude, and unprofessional. Phone call? Good luck getting through and when you do they just want to issue a credit instead of providing service. I'm over it, and have cancelled. We have been Journal Sentinel) subscribers for the past 48 years, but that's about to end. The paper has shrunk in size by about 75% over the years and the cost has increased dramatically. As of July 2020 the print & online subscription cost will increase to $636 per year plus tax. That's way too much for what is arguably a stripped-down edition of USA Today for national news plus some local coverage. The occasional in-depth articles about local issues look to be good, but that's not where my interests are. I'll probably try the online subscription for a year and that will be the end of it for us. On a side note, our delivery service hasn't been as bad as others. Our paper goes missing only a couple times a year, and arrives soaking wet only two times a month. read more

I am shocked and dismayed at how bad the Journal Sentinel's customer support has gotten since the publication was sold and is no longer locally owned. I have tried to contact them to change my subscription, and have found it impossible to do this! The wait time for the phone line is 4 HOURS at any time during any weekday, as I have unsuccessfully tried them at various times every weekday. And even that is not true. In reality, their wait time is NEVER! They have a nice automated voice that says to hang up and they will call you when you are next, but they never do! On two separate weekdays I put in my call at 9:30 am, supposedly the best time to call, opted for the call back, and nobody ever did. I also tried online chat, but they are always helping other callers, so I would have had to keep my screen in constant view for some ungodly-long period of time to use that feature, and I certainly cannot do that! So, I sent an email to the address listed on the website, got an automated reply, a tracking number, and an assurance that someone would get in touch with me as soon as possible. After an entire week, there was no return e-mail call or message. I am on EZ pay, so next I tried to change that, and found it impossible to even do that. I cannot change my subscription status online. I cannot even change my payment method. Every page always sends you back to their useless e-mail address and phone number. By now I am anxious to cancel my subscription and completely cut this scam organization's access to my money. I purchased a gift subscription for my father years ago and it's been nothing but a headache ever since. Same house, same delivery instructions and the paper gets thrown in the ditch (he lives in a rural area), thrown in the road or mostly just not delivered at all. This review is very specific to the communications with the Death Notices department only. I don't read this paper - you can see other reviews as to why. After spending $181 for a few lines of text for an In Memoriam ad and attaching an image as noted, the image was not posted. The JS system shows email attachments at the end of the emails, in which the CSR did not scroll too. I was NOT charged for this, but no itemized bill was supplied, only a proof of text - again, no picture was shown, but I thought I was only checking text. Unfortunately, I was not aware of everything I needed to know what could/would go wrong to be proactive. Communications simply state "no picture in proof, you didn't mention picture, you weren't charged, I couldn't see attachment." All correct - but unfortunately for these grey areas of what am I supposed to be aware of or understand without being told, or the JS personl failing to look for an attachment which may be typical for these ads - and the emotional impact of screw up on my 77 yr old grandmother, I think the communications were poor. I selfishly asked that the JS, in good faith for me, reprint the ad with photo for free for one day. Request denied. Original service of request and responses were very fast. read more

It's time to renew my subscription and I received my billing. Was it 52 weeks of Wednesday and Saturday papers and a total amount? Not quite. First, there is a balance forward of $62.02 and I was told it was because they allowed this as a reduction last year to keep me as a customer. Second, there is a credit of $26.93 and was told that they just wanted to give me a little break. Third, an additional charge of $38.00 for an unknown reason. So, they wanted the break they gave me last year back; gave me a credit for no reason; and then charged me an additional fee for the heck of it. Do they think I'm goofy? Getting the paper delivered is a constant fight. This is the third time in THREE WEEKS my paper was not delivered. And I only get WED and SUNDAY!! (had same delivery issues many other times in a previous stint with MJS in 2018-2017) If you go online to your account your only choice to report it is to tell them or to request a credit. No spot to have it redelivered. Previous stint in 2018-2017 signed up for the $4.31/mo plan and they repeatedly charged me $17-$21/mo and when I tried to correct it, over three different calls, three different people, it was a fiasco. I would give them zero stars if I could. I'm an accountant and have been paying bills and working with vendors for over 30 years. I have NEVER done business with a vendor whose billing department is as grossly incompetent as the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. We switched our subscription from print to on-line and were supposed to get a of credit for the remainder of our print subscription (we pay annually). Not only didn't we get the credit, but were billed $23.15 twice (monthly subscription cost is $4.99). I emailed them a week ago and have not received a response. Good luck if you want to talk to a representative, the hold time is consistently 30 minutes to 60 minutes. The last time I called them I waited for 40 minutes to get a representative. The daily news coverage in MJS is fairly pedestrian, as are the editorial opinions and columns. They have this new feature now called "community columnists" where they basically take a "regular person" and have them write their thoughts on the issues. Sounds like a great idea, but all too often it just amounts to half-informed rants from people who don't know what they're talking about. I mean, for that I don't need a column, I get enough of that at family get-togethers (rim shot). I think Tonya is a little harsh on MJS's investigative capabilities. Spivak and Bice (and now just Spivak) regularly throw it down with hard hitting investigations into what really goes on in the halls of power in MIlwaukee and Wisconsin. It was S&B's reporting that was instrumental in the revelation of the abuses of power on the old County Board and Tom Ament. I would like see Spivak's work get a little more play, however, on the front page rather than Page Two. The reason I give MJS a passing grade, however, is their excellent, award winning series on local economics and environmental and social issues. A few years back they did a weeklong series called "Made in China" that talked about the China manufacturing juggernaut and what it means for the Midwest. They've done great, cutting edge reporting on the Great Lakes ecology and care for the mentally ill. Thomas Jefferson said that he'd rather have newspapers without a government than a government without newspapers. We need newspapers, now more than ever. MJS isn't perfect, and they need to step it up. But I'm happy they're there. read more

Yelp should modify their "star" rating system and offer "negative" star reviews! This would be extremely helpful when rating the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel now that it is a Gannett newspaper. Tried calling the toll free customer service number only to hear a recording of a 45 minute to one hour and eight minute hold time until you can talk to a live person. I accessed the automated system and they have no record of my subscription. I just received a renewal invoice in the mail and it's screwing my out of three months of service which was purchased as a one year renewal earlier in 2017! Sent them an email since I refuse to sit on hold listening to their recordings of why you should purchase/renew your subscription. I received an automated email response. As soon as my "paid for" subscription runs out in March 2018, it's good bye to Gannet media! When living earlier in Green Bay, Gannett bought the local paper and each week the paper got thinner and thinner. It finally got to a point I requested the "brick" option for my home delivery. What is the brick option? It's a masonry brick to hold down the paper during windy weather to keep the paper from flying off your front porch! The only reason for purchasing the paper is the grocery coupons. Even that is getting less and less. Hope someone remembers to shut off the lights when Gannett finally folds. read more

I would give them negative 10 stars if I could, especially for their horrible customer service! I had digital service but in Feb 2019 I went to home delivery (Sun + Wed). From that point I was double billed on the digital access every month , since digital access is always included in home delivery. When I pointed that out to their billing dept, I was told "there was no way for them to know I was also being billed for the digital subscription", and the burden was on me to let them know that!!! This is 2019/ 2020!! Really? They couldn't figure it out? Home delivery for the Handicapped? FORGET IT ! I've been a MJS customer for the past 7 years. For the past 1 1/2 years I found it necessary to request a "Handicapped Delivery" due to lung and heart problems. Handicapped delivery simply means delivery to or near the front door, under the roof overhang so that the newspaper is not soaked by rain or snow. No problem - simply drive up the driveway, take 3 steps out of their car and toss it near the front door. What's difficult about that? UNLESS the delivery person is too lazy to take those 2 or 3 steps to toss the newspaper near the front door! Over the past year or so, I have had to call the complaint number no fewer than 18 times [!] due to [A] non-delivery, [B] wet newspaper [newspaper thrown onto the driveway or lawn 10 - 15 feet from the porch], or, believe it or not, on four occasions, ON THE ROOF! Let me repeat that - My newspaper has been thrown ON THE ROOF on four different occasions! That's "Handicapped Delivery"?! I actually had to call the supervisor in charge of home delivery for this area to have him retrieve newspapers from my roof! In the end, all I ALWAYS got was lame excuses and no lasting results. So they win - I finally gave up and cancelled my subscription and delivery of the newspaper. Even after over-tipping the delivery people on more than one occasion, they simply refused to take those 3 steps from their car to toss the paper near my front door. We called and they refused to credit us back on the second subscription charge even though we had a bank statement stating that they received the funds. It's time to cancel. This started last month (July 2018)... I have complained to Customer Service 5 times (and counting) via email about a delivery person driving on a sidewalk to flip the paper to an address on my rental property. No response at all from MJS. Also occasionally throws papers nowhere near the apartment doors at times, leaving them in the driveways and sometimes up to 75 feet from apartments. Nearly all subscribers on this property are very elderly and handicapped, and this is not acceptable. If this continues into snow removal season I will be forced to pick up scattered newspapers and throw them in the trash so I do not damage my snow blowers. read more

I have received the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel for a lifetime and changed to Wednesday and Sunday deliveries several years ago due to significant increased cost. Beginning 2 months ago they stopped my delivery and after 4 calls to customer service and emails to the editor, George Stanley and to the regional circulation manager (whose voicemail was full and not accepting more calls) I am still not receiving the paper. This is worst service I have ever received and surprised that no one in leadership cares enough to fix it. I was a loyal reader for many years. The paper version got to be very pricey, so we switched to the digital version. What a mistake that was!! The digital version consistently crashed every time we tried to read it. Tried calling the customer service number when they were still answering the phones in Milwaukee, but no one ever answered, even during their business hours. I gave up after months of trying to talk to them. I got a bill in the mail for $48.96 which I'm not paying because I could never read the digital version. Now, they have farmed out their customer service overseas to the Phlippines. Signed up for digital only and it took me all of ten minutes to realize it was complete garbage. I've talked to four different representatives and gotten four different stories. The first two told me my subscription was being canceled and a refund was on the way. 5 days later another representative told me my subscription was still active and that I could not be refunded but would be canceled the next billing cycle, for a service I had for ten minutes and didn't even use! I finally talked to a supervisor who told me my refund will take up to 14 days. I never heard of a refund taking so long. The only thing worse than their garbage newspaper is their customer service. I signed up to have the Sunday & Wednesday paper delivered weekly 1 month ago. In the past month I should have received 8 papers total, I have received 1!! 1 Sunday paper the first weekend, and it was thrown in a huge puddle on the sidewalk, not on my porch or doorstep. I filed a complaint online and nothing came from it. The following week when I never received my paper I filed another complaint and nothing came of that either. I tried to cancel my paper online, the same way that I subscribed and of course you have to call a 800 number. The lady was awful, would not let me finish my sentance. She told me it was my fault because I didn't call and tell them about the issue so they could address it, apparently filing a complaint online on their website isn't sufficient. She told me they couldn't refund my money and that I had paid for my subscription through April (it's February). I confirmed with her that they will continue charging customers without delivery their services and not refund their money?!? LONG time subscriber, loyalty not reciprocated. We have always paid a year's subscription in advance. Just got a bill in the mail for 2 months when the subscription is paid through 1 1/2 of the months listed on the bill! Add to that, there is a $5 "Paper Statement Fee"!! As others have indicated, I was speaking to someone in another country. She had to have a script as she only had the same "answers" no matter the question I asked. Circle back to the answers she's already stated. So my "12 month subscription was cancelled in 11 months" and I have to pay for my 12th month at the "promotion" rate I purchased the 12 months for.....wait, what?? So my 12 month subscription was only for 11 months. The $5 paper statement fee is new this year and there's nothing that can be done about it. But they have my email address; why didn't they save the paper and email me first?? (No answer given to that any time I asked.) "You are lucky your promo rate went as long as it did as the current promo is only for 6 months", which is not true--I have a flyer in hand that is a 12 month promo. Was informed that after this statement we would receive a statement at the new rate....ready for it?....FOUR TIMES the current subscription rate. Not to mention, only 2 of the numerous reported non-delivered paper claims were actually credited to our account and they were from when they forgot to start delivering under the new subscription date. You don't get your paper, you report it, you check because you don't know if they actually credited it and you are told you've already submitted the non-delivery.....but then you never actually get credited! Thankfully the credit card I used to pay the past 12 month subscription (oh, wait, that was only an 11 month subscription!) expired prior to the renewal date or I'd also be in the battle I've read of others who cannot get them to stop billing their credit card. Now, if i remember correctly about contracts both written and oral are binding. I have paperwork saying the current subscription ends 8/31/20. What disgusts me is that when my family recently submitted a simple obituary to MJS, we were charged $750. This obit didn't have pictures and was of average length. I've posted similarly sized eviction notices and classified ads for less than $70. The Journal Sentinel has a monopoly on the obituary and is charging ridiculous prices because they can. I understand that they have lost so many subscribers over the years but to gouge people over the deaths of their loved-ones is disgusting. Maybe if the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel didn't poop on Republicans every chance they get, they would have kept many more subscribers and wouldn't need to resort to this sort of highway robbery. We got tired of complaining about delivery failure, so, after being subscribers for 12 years, we cancelled our subscription -- except MJS kept charging us. After going round and round with them, we have no other recourse but to bellyache publicly and vow to never subscribe again. How foolish of them to make adversaries out of us over less than $12. I have been trying for three days to call and cancel. Each time there was at least a 30 minute wait. I tried again this morning, and was informed there would be a one minute wait. 15 minutes later, someone came on to the line. After several attempts on their part to try to keep me as a customer, I was able to cancel our subscription. I then asked where was the location of this representative. WARNING! If you do not want to renew your subscription and think you can simply do so by not paying the renewal invoice, you will be told by the MJS that you are WRONG. They will continue to deliver papers you didn't ask for and then tell you that you are obligated to pay for them because you didn't officially ask them to stop. My mother is 92 years old and wants the Milwaukee paper for the sports only. She pays over $500 per year for this privilege as a loyal customer for over 50 years. It's impossible to talk to anyone about a discount or at least having the paper delivered to her apartment instead of left in the parking lot in the wee hours. I wish they would go under so we didn't have to buy this paper for our mom. I'd tell her you went out of business if I could get away with it. Shame on you for preying on old, old people who are set in their ways. Terrible business practices and nonexistent customer service. read more
