When my TV started going "fuzzy", I didn't really know what to do. I paid $1200 for the 32" monster in 1998 and I wasn't quite ready to give it up. The picture was okay, but slowly getting worse. (Maybe secretly I really just wanted an HD-TV and I was convincing myself the picture sucked.) Anyways, I got some coupons in the mail and one of them was for Minas TV. They had a coupon for Free Delivery and Setup on a new TV and $89 off a service call on a broken TV, plus the coupon promised prices that would beat Best Buy and the other guys. I figured, what the hell... I'll drive right by Minas TV on the way to the Best Buy in Evanston anyways, I live on the third floor and I'm a electronic dumbass so that coupon would come in really handy if I bought a new TV so I should see what they got. So now the journey begins.... Here's what I gotta say: If you don't mind buying a TV from a place that really needs a paint job and some new carpet, and you want to save about $200 on a HD-TV and you want to talk to business owners who really know their shi*t , forget Best Buy and just go to MINAS TV... they're my new best friends!!! Walking into Minas is like walking into an old-fashioned hardware store except it's filled with giant HD-tvs and other cool electronic stuff! When you walk in the door, the first thing you see is all the TV's that are in for repair and a couple of used ones that are for sale. Boxes of air-conditioners are lined up everywhere next to a small selection of stereos and small electronics. They had about 20 flat screen and plasma TVs on display, but they were kind of tucked away in the back of the store. You could tell instantly this was a family owned business because everybody working there looked alike! (It turns out the dad started the business over 30 years ago and his two sons who grew up in the business now run it with him. The mom runs the video rental department, and apparently she manages all the rentals with file cards and a notepad - kind of amazing, but very cool in my book!) So, I'm a little taken aback by the lack of glitz and glitter and the low-key nature of the staff. Then I started asking questions about the differences between a Sharp and an LG. Clearly, I was talking to a TV "geek" but he (Rafi, one of the two sons) was able to answer every question I had in a way that I could actually understand. Talking to him, I was comfortable, confident and didn't feel any pressure to buy anything. It was a really friendly conversation. I definitely knew I could trust him. Okay, to make the long story shorter, next to the LG they had the current Best Buy sale flyer, The same TV (same stock number) was $1095 at Best Buy. They were selling it for $895. Ca-Ching! Destiny was telling me I needed a flat screen. I whipped out the free delivery and set-up coupon, they said "yep, no problem", I said, "Here's my Visa, when can you deliver it?" They said, " How is 6:30 tonight?" Now that's great service!!! I decided I had one last thing to negotiate with them.... "Will you take my 10-year old 200 lb old TV to television heaven"? Rafi said, "Sure." At 6:35, the truck pulls up an three guys get out. It was Rafi (the owner), his Dad - a really spry and energetic 70-ish year old, and the muscle guy. Rafi and the muscle guy carried the box up three flights of stairs, and set the new TV (box and all) down. Rafi said he brought his dad with because he knew the old set wasn't working well and maybe he could fix it. (Well, I just bought a $900 TV, and the attention of my affection had already switched to the new LG, but okay.... ) Dad (sorry, I don't know his name) grabbed the remote control, turned on the old TV and said, "$169". He didn't think about it, didn't need to diagnose it, hit it, open it up or anything. It was like he formed a Vulcan mind melt with the TV when he touched the remote and then knew exactly what the problem was. Suddenly, the idea of having a TV in my bedroom got affordable! I asked about the delivery and return charges (no way I'm carrying that thing up my stairs). They said since they were here, no charge for the service call or diagnosis, but it would be $49 to deliver it back in about a week. For $200 I get TV in the bedroom! Whoa-ho! I'm in!!! So, back to my lovely new LG! It took Rafi about 15 minutes to assemble the base and set it up in the living room. He hooked up the DVD player like a pro, then programmed the remote control for me and did the channel set up for me. While he was doing that, his helper was cleaning up all the styrofoam and cardboard and he carried that down to the truck. Rafi and his Dad easily spent another 20 minutes teaching me about the TV, explained most of the buttons on the remote control. I gotta say I love it. Yelp won't let me type much more, so I'll end with: Everything about doing business with Minas TV was a pleasure! My 6-yr old flat-screen's video died, though the audio and other features were fine. I discovered there's such a thing as TV-repair and cruised Yelp to find a neighborhood joint. Half of Minas is for DVD rentals (which I'm also surprised still exists), and the other half is TV's. They can send a tech to you, but I brought my TV to them. They require a $60 deposit to diagnose and, if easy, to fix your TV. It took them three days to get back to me, and they pronounced my TV defective. Not sure what that means. They transferred the $60 deposit to a new TV purchase. My selection was out of stock and took 3 days to arrive. All in all, it took a week, which felt like too long. However, Amran was incredibly kind and friendly, he has a super chill, sweet dog, and an older lady was watching Wednesday afternoon soaps on a magnificent large screen and eating lunch. Minas has movies I haven't been able to find elsewhere (And the Band Played On and La Reine Margot, for example). As said elsewhere, the prices are good too: $2 to $3. The dad-owner even told me how to connect a VCR and an antenna so that I could play an ancient video tape. I had just mentioned that I needed to figure out how to do that, and the mom-owner called to her husband to come out and teach me. That's nice service. In addition to rentals, they've got the titular TV section, but they've also got video games, portable DVD players, headphones, antennas, air conditioners (in season), candy, popcorn, soda (good to know if you're doing laundry next door), etc. Stuff is sometimes out of alphabetical order, which doesn't really bother me. If the son-owner is there, he can tell you whether they've got what you're looking for and he'll probably get it for you. He's gotten movies for me that I didn't see on the shelf. If you're like me and you can't wait the day or two for NetFlix, amble into Minas. If you must drive, they always seem to have spaces in front of the store. read more

Minas TV was able to do exactly what they said they would do...that gets 5 stars from me. I paid the diagnostic fee for my broken 42" LCD tv; they called me the next day to tell me what it would cost to fix it. I accepted (on a Saturday), and it was ready at the end of the day Monday. My diagnostic fee was applied to the total repair cost, so I paid $70 to find out what was wrong, and another $100 and some to get it fixed...about half the price of the TV brand new. Thanks! I had a great experience working with Raffi and Henry from Minas TV. Our replacement TV was not mounting to my satisfaction, and I simply asked Raffi, "what would you recommend?" His solution was excellent! He asked if we needed a full-motion bracket, and when I told him I didn't he suggested a different mount, which he had on hand. Raffi and Henry took the old bracket down, cleaned up the space from access wires, and mounted the TV with the new bracket at the height it should have been at since we moved into our current home. They were both very respectful and gracious while in our home. The price for the additional labor was fair, as well as the for the bracket, and communicating with Raffi was very easy. Electronics: I wanted to purchase a super simple DVD player. Nothing with any bells and whistles. I went to Mina's. They were super friendly. Had what I was looking for. Didn't try to get me to buy something fancier or more expensive. I was so glad to give my money to them, a family owned, 40 year old local store, than to fork my cash over to Target down the street. Videos: My main video store is Specialty Video with Mina's as a good back up. Sometimes Mina's has things that specialty does not. Plus, if I am looking for a season of a TV show, I will always try Mina's first. They will give you the entire season to watch for one week. With other stores you have to rent each disc separately and it is never a week long rental. Score. read more

Weird store, I visited today looking for movie rentals. Looks like they sell electronics also. You have to have an account to rent movies from them. It wasn't horribly priced, we rented two older movies for 5 bucks, for 5 days. They had a pretty wide selection, and they also sell movies and vhs tapes for cheap. The staff greeted us upon entering and were friendly. They explained if we needed an extra day with the movie to just come ask, because they're pretty lenient. Probably my new video rental spot. read more

I had a TV that needed repair. I dropped it off on April 6th, 2009. I received a call on April 9th with the diagnosis and a timeframe of 5-7 business days to get the part in and install it. I followed up with them on April 17th (6 biz days later) and they informed me that the part had not been received from their 3rd party distributor yet and that they would call them and get back to me that day. I never heard back. So, I called on Monday, April 20th and talked with the other biz owner and he said he would call to find out what was going on. On Tuesday, April 21st, he informed me that their distributor received the part broken and needed to order another one. I was told that the part should be at MINA'S by Friday April 24th and their tech was on vacation so he wouldn't get to it until the following Wednesday (April 28th). I called on April 28th and MINA'S still had not received the part from THEIR distributor. I finally picked up my fixed TV on Monday, May 4th......ALMOST 4 WEEKS AFTER THE DIAGNOSIS was done. I understand it was not MINA's fault, DIRECTLY, but, their 3rd party distributor, that they use, are part of MINA's and when I went to pick up the TV, MINA's did not make any attempt to knock anything off the price as a courtesy for me being inconvenienced! The 2 stars are for the long wait, the poor customer service and for not making any effort to compensate me for the inconvenience. read more

Very nice staff, family owned business. I was a little disappointed because they ended up not being able to repair my portable DVD player. So I was out the $25, plus I ended up having to buy a new one. I do agree with the other reviewer that it did take several weeks for them to call me back. I did not hear from them so I had to call them after about 3 weeks and the person let me know that the laser would cost too much to replace so I should just buy a new one. Bummer. So, I don't have too much to say as far as an experience-I just know they have some pretty nice stuff in there and the staff was knowledgeable and professional. If you are tired of "big box" stores, this might be another option. I just wish I could have scored a cheap fix for my DVD player that was only 2 years old. Boo hoo for me. read more

The national U-Haul rental website was down and inconsistent and they were kind enough to get my rental figured out for me on their end. They were very kind and inclusive and it was easy to tell this is a hardworking and passionate family business all-around. The truck was new, clean, super easy to drive and easy instructions process, charges, and for return under all circumstances. It seems like they do good business -- they were busy both times I came in (pickup/return) but they took care of everyone in turn and were perfect gentlemen. I had a television that needed repair and they couldn't help me. It wasn't so much that they couldn't fix and/or find the part but that they didn't call. I had to call to find out what was going on, and it took a while for them to even let me know they couldn't help. They did however, offer me a discount on a new TV. I can't say for sure, and I'm probably wrong, but it felt like they didn't even bother with my TV. They just wanted to sell me a new one. This is my only experience with Minas, others have had good experiences, but I can only go with what happened to me. read more

Here's what happened to me. Our TV would turn on but only stay on for a couple of hours and then shut itself off. Upon turning it back on, it would go "click click click" and not turn back on for about 24 hours or so. Researching on the Internet, it seemed that the power supply board was the likely cause. We explained the problem to Minas, dropped off the TV, and paid a $60 diagnostic service fee. Several days later, Minas called and told us that they did the same test as us (turn it on until it turned itself off) and that it'd be between $350-$450 depending on what the problem was. Apparently, he didn't actually open the TV to find out what the actual problem was. So really, Minas did nothing but take our money and tell us what we already knew. They offered us $30 off if we purchased a new TV from them. If the issue is the PSB, I've found them online for under $80. What a ripoff. My suggestion is to get service and shop elsewhere. read more

Minas TV and Video is a rarity in today's world of generic businesses and gentrification. It's hard to get quality service from businesses when quantity and the bottom line are the main focuses. Minas, however, is different. Video rentals are actually a better value than at Hollywood Video, the chain store that moved in down the street and tried (unsuccessfully, thankfully) to steal Minas' business. Most movies are 5 day rentals for $2-$3. You can also rent TV series for $7-$10 per season (depending on the length of the show) which is a much better value than the chain stores than make you rent them one DVD at a time. Minas is family-owned and it shows. Employees treat you like friends and not numbers. The owners are down-to-earth and friendly with customers. Minas is also great for TV and electronics repairs. They sell TVs, DVD players, home theater systems, air conditioners, stereos, remotes, etc. They also do home installations. I highly recommend Minas! read more

Lived in the neighborhood near Minas since I moved to Chicago in 2007 and like their neighborhoody feel. Love that they have cheaper movies than Hollywood and Blockbuster!! Everyone there is friendly and you see the same staff day in and day out. No glitzy showroom, but a knowledgeable staff. They can order you movies and video games and it's often a bit cheaper or on par with other movie/videogame places. They offer TV repair as well as the opportunity to buy new TVs, air conditioners, and other electronics and Direct TV service. For a small business they try the best they can to stay competetive in the corprate america market (BestBuy/Target/Walmart/Hollywood.Ect.) which is hard as we well know. I reccommend Minas for their friendly service and fair prices. If you want to patron local businesses and not corprate america they are a good bet! read more

Raffi is always prompt and efficient. We have multiple buildings and it seems tenants, bad weather or something manages to screw up cables, satellites, wall-mounted TV or another part of the AV systems (a hazard of Airbnb renting). The other hazard of Airbnb guests is they are QUICK to complain; so, as soon as we find a problem it has to be FIXED. Raffi has never let us down and even though he really is a TERRIBLE golfer, his AV skills are what set him apart; so, we can forgive his 95+ rounds for 18, he keeps the TVs on the wall, the DirecTV and remotes working and our guests happy!!! read more

I was always told the situation and was called back or e-mailed frequently with status updates while Sony approved the repair and the part was sent. Much quicker turn around time than I had anticipated. TV is working fine and I didn't pay a cent. I couldn't be happier. I would definitely recommend Minas. read more

When we moved in 2003, Comcast completely botched our cable install, and I was livid. Our neighbor heard my tirade & recommended Minas, as they're a DirectTV distributor. Blood still boiling from my Comcast interaction, I marched down to Minas, and not only were they polite and helpful, they immediately offered a next-day install at 11AM (and showed up right on time! - a miracle these days.) Since then my husband & I have been loyal Minas customers, both for rentals (they do have a mah-velous selection) and TV repair (again, courteous & timely service). I went here to try to repair a 7yr old tv. They charge a diagnostics fee but its convenient that you can just drop off the unit and they'll call you back. They work both Sat and Sundays! A couple of days later I found out that my tv had no future and I ended up getting a new one from them. I was able to use the fee paid towards the new tv (within 30 days) and their tv's are reasonably priced. read more
