We worked with one other construction company and a roofing company when we did some remodeling on our last home, and we did not have good experiences with either company. I contracted with McNearney Construction in 2007 and it has haunted me ever since. I had both of…read moremy bathrooms redone with tile and also my kitchen floor. First, in the main bathroom I had requested the small built out wall to be removed when the old tub and surround were taken out and tile put in - this was not done. I came home and it was partially tiled already, so I let that slide as it did look good. The bathroom came along fairly well upstairs then the basement bathroom was completed. The kitchen tile was to go in last and on another invoice. When the bathrooms were completed I had paid a deposit for the kitchen and the crew was onto another job. I inspected my bathrooms (he was not around when I got home from work to inspect them, so I did the walk around on my own) I noticed a couple of things right away that were wrong with the upstairs bathroom. The towel rack that was on the wall with an oak backing was not moved for the tile installation, it was instead tiled around (see photo). The shower head, knob and tub spout were all out of alignment. They slant to the side when looking up from the drain. The bathroom downstairs had a hole in the ceiling in the shower and the upstairs bathroom had part of the drywall ripped away when the old surround was taken out, and this was not fixed. I called him to ask about these items and he said he would come out and look at the spout issue. I stayed home to meet with him and we looked at the bathroom, he attempted to move the spout over a bit but I asked him how he can move this with the tile installed. he informed me that there was a beam behind where this was installed so he had no choice. I questioned him about this, stating couldn't you have moved the 2x4 so this would not be this way? he just sort of shrugged his shoulders and said he always puts them in along the pre-existing beam. I stated well now it looks funny, this is not right. We then looked at the towel rack and he said the towel rack was on the wall and in the way. I asked him why didn't you take it down the move it over the inch and a half for reinstallation so it didn't interfere with the tile. Now the tile is around the top of the wood and ruining the wood plus I cannot move it now. He stated "it was up and I didn't know how to take it down" to which I showed him the wood putty (pretty obvious already) covering the screws and that it is easy to remove. He also said he did not notice the sheetrock in that room or the hole in the shower ceiling downstairs. I was pretty aggravated over this and his "not giving a crap" attitude. After several weeks I had not heard from him about my kitchen floor and sent him a message. He stated he could do it and told me the cost. I reminded him that I had given him a deposit of 50% already on check number ---- and he should have been in touch with me about this to complete the job. He said he would come do it but needed the money up front, I told him no come do the job and I will pay when done and we can talk about these other issues you have not responded too. He sent his assistant out to do the floor and I told him I needed Charles to call me when done. During this installation I did not have enough tile, which I purchased based on how much square footage of coverage I would need. The cases I bought should have been more than enough but - they weren't and I could not order the same tile anymore. I had to get like tile but different enough that you could notice easily. The floor was put in and away they went, never to reach out to me about my issues. After several months I was having new cabinets installed and I was informed that my tile floor was not even close to level. That contractor showed me and of course I was pretty upset about this. I wrote a letter to McNearney explaining the issues - again - and how upset I was. I received no response. Several more months went by and I wrote again, no response. I did this over the course of a year and a half, during this time some of the tiles in the kitchen had cracked. I replaced the kitchen floor and was informed by the manager at CFM (contract furnishings mart) that the cement used on the ceramic tiles I had was not the right type of cement, eventually they all would have come up and broken due to this. They wanted the contractors name so they could put him on the do not use list. When the floor was taken up, we discovered that the hardy board was hardly screwed down as well, causing some unevenness in the flooring. I was not aware that you could go to a contractors board and lobby a complaint until after it had been 2 years. Had I known....... Anyway, I would not recommend this company to anyone.

Bottom line....our job came out well. The road to get there was tenuous and slightly frustrating…read more Yeah...grab a coffee and sit back because this is going to take a while.... ;-) ** I'll preface this review by saying that we were first time remodelers. At least where we hired someone. Up to this point we've done a number of projects ourselves. Take that however you will....contractors will likely assume we were a pain in the tush, while other first timers may see this as helpful. Charles is a nice guy. Lots of stories that will leave you shaking your head. ;-) - He seems to have certain materials/items that he prefers to work with, that he's worked with in the past. You'll need to speak up if you want something other than what he'll automatically steer you toward. You should have a good idea of what you want when you talk to him. He doesn't provide a rendering of the project so you need to be able to picture it in your head or work with a designer who will provide that hard copy visual source for you. - Unfortunately, and I'm truly sorry for him for this, he had some personal issues arise at the start of our project. We tried to be patient and understanding, and I think he would agree with that. Those problems resulted in him hardly ever being on site. He has a friend/employee who is a really nice guy who works with him. After my spending a year looking at reviews, licensures and trying to find a contractor who does the work himself, it was frustrating that the friend (who we later learned has an engineering degree but isn't a licensed contractor) did a good portion of our work. Mixed feelings there as we were messing with the main structure/support point for our home. We were repeatedly told that Charles would be doing all of this work, when in fact he didn't. Again...personal problems that took him away. - Be sure to have a discussion about permits....and be sure to get them. - Communication wasn't stellar. A number of unanswered emails. At some point, about a week before completion, Charles said that he must have accidentally sent one of my emails to the trash because he'd just found a bunch of them in there. Hence the lack of communication. - After our house was torn apart and we were living in a bedroom, the problems hit and discussions were had that shouldn't have been...... Excuses given for why we should pay sooner than originally planned, etc....that kind of stuff...which made me more cautious than I should had to have been. Nothing illegal...just stressed me out and left me wondering if the job would get done. He was clearly stressed and under a lot of pressure in his personal life....again, an unfortunate situation. - As I said, the end result is very good thanks to the great cabinetmaker, electrician and plumber. Drywall and tile both had to have repair work done before we would sign off. The small amount Charles did was done well. - His payment schedule was in 1/4s...1/4 down, 1/4 at material selection, 1/4 at start, and 1/4 upon completion. A bit scary...but we did it. When the job was almost complete...we still needed the bar installed and the final inspection done...he asked for his final payment. We refused. The minute the final came back okay I transferred the money to his account. Done. To ask for payment before completion is absurd...especially as it was spelled out, "Balance due upon completion", on his contract. - The contract itself is pretty vague....be sure to sit down with it and spell out anything you want to have made more specific. We didn't have trouble with the contract...just wanted you to know that it's very very general. - When we signed on, Charles listened to what we wanted and did a good job of putting it into action. I believe he knows what he's doing and does it well. I think he's good at envisioning things and knows what the end goal will be. It would be great if he would give more updates and information to keep the homeowner informed....so they aren't twiddling their thumbs in a corner trying to figure out what the heck is/isn't happening with the job. Our experience, unfortunately, didn't go as smoothly as it could/should have and I didn't appreciate the work being done by someone else after we'd been told that Charles would be doing the work himself. Had he not had the personal situation then things would likely have gone better.

He worked very hard to get us back into our house on schedule. He was honest about what he could do and what he couldn't do. He gave me updates regularly - usually daily. He went above and beyond to help me with some plumbing issues that came up when we removed a toilet and appliances. He helped me re- install appliances. Probably most importantly he did an excellent job installing the floors per my fairly detailed request (nail down with underlayment). He had to pull many of the baseboards and he reattached them and touched up everything. The final result is an very nice house. We are so happy with how it looks. Thank you! Also, on a less related note - Brian also installed ~400 feet of picket fence for us in 2018. Also very happy with that job. We have already talked with Brian about our future projects.

I'm writing to heartily recommend Top Refinish for any cabinet repairs or refinishing needs you…read moremight have. We had a small flood in our kitchen and staff from the restoration firm we hired cut numerous and excessively large holes in the base supports of our cabinets. In many places, these spanned cabinet joints and left the cabinets without proper support. We also had a cabinet door damaged during the process - a broken hinge for which no replacement parts were available still. We had other cabinet doors knocked out of alignment. Trying to find a firm to fix these, replace the kickplates/trim, etc. that were left by the restoration company was difficult. It was a relatively small job. Ervin was one of only 2 companies that responded and was willing to take on our small job. Not only did Top Refinish respond immediately, they sent out an estimator promptly. Ervin and his employees are all great communicators. Everything was very professional and their costs are reasonable given their expertise. Give them a call for a bid. You'll be glad you did.

They took a kitchen to the studs and built a masterpiece for my wife and me. How much do we love them? We rehired them to renovate our master bathroom completely. The fact that we rehired them should tell you all that you need to know about how amazing they are. So, again, the best review is that we are using them again, and you should use them too because they are the best. What made them the best: 1) They helped us save a lot of money. They have a unique approach to ordering materials for the project. They let us know what they needed, and we ordered it directly. We ordered the new cabinets, the new doors, the new appliances, etc. By doing this, there was no additional markup on the items ordered, and it saved us a lot of money. Other contractors we met with didn't want to do this, and their quotes were at least 20 percent more than PDX Homeworks. 2) Their work. Unlike other contractors that we have had in the past. When they saw something that wasn't quite right but that we would never know about, they didn't just cover it up and move on; THEY MADE IT RIGHT. Not to mention that their work is very precise. I once watched Nick get so frustrated when he was leveling the kitchen as he tried to level everything because it was off, to me, an imperceptible amount. At least the amount was imperceptible to me, but to Nick, it wasn't perfectly level, and he continued until it met his exacting needs. 3) Helping with design. We were amazed at how painless the whole design process of our kitchen was. We gave Amanda some inspirational pictures, and she came back with a fantastic design that only required a few minor tweaks. THANK YOU, AMANDA. 4) They only work on one project at a time. It is just Nick, Amanda, and Kailash. They don't have multiple crews doing multiple jobs that they are overseeing. They were at our house every day, working and working. It was so lovely that we had consistency in seeing them every day. 5) They're very clean. Every day, they would use drop cloths on the ground to make sure they didn't get the carpets dirty. I even told them that they didn't need to do that because I was getting the carpets cleaned after they were done. They didn't listen to me and continued to use drop cloths every day. They also vacuumed and cleaned up every day. It was a very clean renovation. 6) They are just the nicest people. It was great getting to know them during the whole process of our renovation. They don't do this type of work to become huge builders with millions of dollars of work completed every year. They are just the nicest people who love remodeling, helping people out, and helping them save money where they can. Again, we can't say enough good things about them except that we used them, again, to renovate our master bathroom. If you need a contractor, unequivocally, I can say that you don't need to look any further because you have found the best contractors in Portland and possibly the world. USE THEM!!!!!!
