I and my partner love Dosas. So when a dear friend recommended us this place, we couldn't wait.
The restaurant is quite neat and we were welcomed warmly by the hosts. We were soon seated and the host brought us the menus.
Now, for authenticity purpose, I normally like to order 2 basic varieties of Dosas: Plain and Masala Dosa. More so, I prefer my dosas in the simplest form i.e. decently thin and crisp with a well-flavored yellow potato masala filling. I just love the crunch and hate it when it gets soggy due to the fillings. So when i inquired, the host assured me that the dosa won't be soggy and will be crisp.
Also I am a stickler for a good Sambhar (not too sweet) and Chutney (decently spiced). The host was kind enough to answer all our questions and also gave us his recommendations.
So with that we ordered:
Plain Dosa
Masala Dosa
Fried Mirchi Bhaji
..and since my parter and I were feeling a bit adventurous, we also ordered..
Pav Bhaji Dosa
Pizza Dosa...
10-12 minutes later, our order started to arrive.
First look at the Dosa, and I was a bit surpised. It wasn't thin but a thick dosa. However, it had an amazing crunch, yet had a soft underside. Honestly, it absolutely blew my mind.
On the taste side, it was delicious. The red (Chilli), white (peanut)and green (Coconut) chutney tasted like what you taste in South India. Also, the Sambhar wasn't watery and had some authentic flavors like tamarind. It was well-spiced, thick with a bit of tang.
The Masala Dosa was similar. The potato bhaji inside the dosa was soft and well spiced and yet the dosa wasn't soggy. Awesome!
The Pav Bhaji Dosa was another surpise. It red bhaji actually tasted like the street-side pav bhaji and went quite well with the dosa and chutneys.
The Pizza Dosa however was a huge disappointment. Its filling had almost next to no vegetables and with less cheese. It was not as we had expected from a bestseller dosa , especially one which was highly recommended by the host. It didn't have good amount/variety of veggies, nor good amount of cheese, or a pizza sauce. Instead it tasted quite bland.
The Mirchi Bhaji was another let down. The chickpea covering lacked any flavour nor was there any kind of seasoning on the mirchi. We had a couple of bites and left the rest. We felt we wasted our money on this.
Overall, we had a decent experience at Minerva Tiffins. It is a good place to visit with family and friends. The dosas are unique and has great taste.
To foodies:
Visit this place for the dosas. It's good, the dosas are well-sized and has an amazing crunch to them. Stay away from Pizza Dosa. The prices are quite economical.
To Owner and management:
Amazing Dosas. Amazing chutney and Sambhar. However there is good scope to improve. Please rework on the mirchi bhaji and on your adventurous dosas. Keep up the good work, I'll definitely visit soon.
