I have been going to Ming Ly Hair Salon for a couple years now. The lady there is very delicate with your hair, and is thorough to make sure your hair cut is straight and even. She's pretty good with listening to customers, considering I am quite picky and have quite a few requests while she treats my hair. I think Ming Ly is the guy who works there and owns the salon - I believe he's the one who cuts boys' hair and he seems to be pretty good with kids. The only thing is they mostly just speak Mandarin there - if you're not a Mandarin speaker, be sure to speak slowly. They do have basic understanding of English. read more

I came into this salon with fine straight, waist-length virgin hair that was even and very healthy. I specifically asked for a chest length cut with some light layering. Instead, I received the worst haircut I've ever gotten. I left with underarm-length hair (with the shortest pieces/layers being cut around my ears and chin). The layers are also uneven, aggressively razored, and disconnected. To make matters worse, my hair is cut differently on each side, so they don't match, and my curtain bangs were left uneven as well. Not only did I lose years of length in a single appointment, but my hair was also thinned out so severely that it feels like I've lost half my density and it looks damaged despite being newly cut. My ends flip out, the short layers stick out, and my once smooth and full hair is now choppy and difficult to style. This has been devastating to deal with -- a haircut should make you feel lighter and more confident, but this has done the exact opposite. If you value your length, thickness, and health of your hair, I strongly recommend being cautious with this salon and avoiding razoring or heavy texturizing here. It has been months since the cut, and I am still struggling with the damage that was done. It will likely take me at least a year if not more to grow all of it out. When I made an appointment, I specified I wanted Lily to cut my hair. She confirmed my hair appointment with Lily. I go in for my appointment but Lily says she's busy and sticks me with another staff. This is the second time in a row this has happened to me. Lily wasn't busy and it was obvious she was catering to her long time customers only. The hair stylist layered my hair when I asked her 3 times not to layer it. She cut off 1 inch when I asked for 3 inches. The front is short while the back looks like it wasn't even cut. The sides have chunks of short and long strands. I won't be returning. I have to ditto some of the other sentiments. 1. I did not get the hair color I asked for ... even though we went thru the color patch sample book and selected it together. I asked for a 5N and she put the 6.03. 2. Then after the color job was done, she wanted to get out of the blow-dry portion to make time to squeeze in a walk-in. Since she had already put the wrong color, I agreed to free up her time and walked out with wet hair. Note to hair stylist: we need to be able to trust you. I was referred by a family member to come here to try this place out. It looks clean and the price was good. I showed them the color I wanted and the lady said she can do it. Therefore, I have this place a chance. Bad idea.... I wanted a light pink/Rose color. It came out purple.. Completely than what I expected, but I was fine with it. The chemical they were using on me to bleached my hair was burning though. The color washed off in less than 2 weeks! At first, I thought it was because they said it will become the rose color after a few washes. Nope, totally not. I even called them and went back to showed them my color now. They said because I didn't buy a special purple shampoo. I am using a fair color safe shampoo. I admit that I like nice things and splurge here and there, but I refuse to fork out $50 -$75 for a hair cut and wash (the rates at most "posh and trendy" salons). One of my worst hair cuts was $50 at some haughty salon. Lily is one of the owners and has been working here for over 18 years. She's pretty up to date w/ the current hair cuts and actually very attentive to how you want your hair cut. I much prefer this place than those overly pricey salons where some flamboyant stylish (not that there's anythong wrong w being flamboyant) is trying to convince to add a dye job to your cut or push their expensive salon products on you. For a cut and wash $12-$14. My total was $30 for cut wash, styling, and tip. Much prefer this over my 50 dollar I-traveled-back-to-the-80's-housewife-hair cut. read more

Parking: this be the 626 so expect people who don't know how to drive, let alone park, and parking spots that seem like they are just a few inches short of normal.. err thatswhatshesaid? :X other than that, its a private lot that is shared among other businesses in a plaza. There's a flat screen tv that is usually playing some kind of asian game show or drama, sometimes even the news. Service: I only come here for lily. I've gotten my hair dyed, permed, and cut here on and off for the past decade almost! This place is cheap. $14 for a woman's hair cut with med-long length (this doesn't include shampoo and style). The people who work here are loud, and often times they'll get caught up talking and laughing with other customers who speak their language. I have been going here for 21 years . Best shampoo ever... they massage your scalp for maybe 15 minutes or more. Having thick hair, they have the best straightening chemicals that doesn't damage your hair. They are very professional and patient. I like all their staff. I finally decided on something like victoria beckham. I was so happy with the result.. Shes really good. Ever since, I only go to her and no one else. After reading the reviews on Yelp, I decided to come back to this place for a haircut with my sister. My mom always took me here for haircuts and it's been almost 2 years since I've been there, so I gave it another shot. I REALLY DON'T RECOMMEND THIS PLACE TO ANYONE. I guess "LiLi" wasn't in so there were just two ladies and one man working. The guy cut my sisters hair and one of the ladies cut my hair. Wow, I told her not to touch my bangs and don't cut it so short. Apparently, it just goes in one ear and out the other. My bangs are extremely short and hideous now. I'm going to have to hide these for a month, at least! -___- Why did I give it a 1? My number one rule in salons is never let customers leave with their hair dripping wet. After the man finished my sisters' hair, he didn't even blowdry it for her! He just let her have damp hair and the lady did blowdry my hair, but not completely, so my hair was damp as well. So I was on yelp trying to find a place that can do a simple cut and trim for under $20 I wanted a simple trim because I thought my hair was looking really, really boring, and I wanted to leave it long for my sister's wedding in about three months. As a result, I called a few places around the Alhambra and Monterrey Park area, but they were charging over $40! I came upon Ming Ly Hair Salon by chance on yelp and decided "Why the hell not??" I walked in at about noon on a weekday and was immediately seated and cut by a male worker (middle aged Asian man). I have always been skeptic about men cutting my hair (I know---I am being a bit sexist here....) and have always prefer women cutting my hair. But since this is a simple trim, I thought it wouldn't hurt. I told my hair stylist what I wanted: trim it only an inch short (was thinking of two inches but wanted to say one inch in case they cut it too short), have my hair slightly layer with a v shape in the back, and to slightly fix my side bangs. Thirty minutes in, I was done already! I paid $14 plus tip and left a happy woman. I think he did a fabulous job! He gave me what I wanted and was very, very please with the result. I think the best advice that I can give to you about coming here or to any hair salon is to ALWAYS tell your hair stylist what you want and what you don't want. Don't go in saying "just cut whatever you think looks good on me" because I have done that before at another salon and the result was so bad. I came to this salon hoping to get my hair cute by a LIly since all the yelp reviews said that she was great, but I guess she was busy or was not present at the time that I had arrived. Today I wanted a hair cut and tried to find something in Silverlake but every salon is "by appointment only" and logically, on short notice, they were booked. I called Ming Ly Hair Salon and they said they could fit me in at 4pm but got there at 4:20pm. They were cool about it and asked me to have a seat. I opted for no hair wash or styling. I waited about 20 minutes because they were handling 3 ladies with only 2 stylists and an apprentice. I got a woman named Lily who was really nice and has 25 yrs of experience. She was friendly and I decided to trust her, because hair always grows back, and told her I wanted. She told me that when I grow it out, if I want volume/bounce to come back for a body wave (like hers was). Then at about 5:10 I was done! This was the fastest hair cut ever but she stuck to my wishes and I don't hate it. It is a new style to me but almost exactly like I wanted it. (The layering is asian style *short on outside, long inside not the normal "V" that's made at your back but I think its cute and different.) I chose to get it shorter then usual this time so I duno about trims. Just to let you know I ALWAYS tell them I want to 1) be able to tie it up for work 2) I add an inch to where I really want it just to be safe. They DON'T take cards so I had to run to the bank which was pretty embarassing but I was super happy to find it was only 14 dollars! I practically stumbled into this location for a quick hair cut. I'm a guy with short hair. My needs are pretty basic--steady hands and a decent sense of what the customer wants is all that I ask for. The barber on duty was a guy and he was very careful and efficient. It is a hair salon--not a barbershop--so expect to be surrounded by women in curlers and chatting amongst each other in Chinese. It was a good experience and I highly recommend Ming Ly Hair Salon. As with other barbers, you can drop in, but I'd call ahead if you prefer having a guy cut your hair. read more

I agree with an earlier poster.. She let me go with wet hair! For ladies wanting any more than a trim - stay away. I had a lady cut my hair. She gave me super choppy layers and rushed thru the whole process. And no hair dry. She is super lazy and not good at all. She just wants to get you out of there. I've had a better experience with the man, but never again. You definitely get what you pay for. I'm gonna have to pay more from now on. Wow, I seriously can't believe this. I came here to do a Japanese Straightening and what happened during the process is that the lady led the straightening iron rest on my scalp various times. It hurt so bad and today I notice burn marks, yes burn marks on some locations on my scalp. Even worse, the man who works there said he wanted to cut my hair tips ONLY. Been to this place for the last 20 years for my haircut. It's a simple , casual hair stylist saloon. The brother and sister run this place . Lily is the one that cut my hair. I am a guy who someday want regular cut ( means with scissors ) and someday I prefer razor cut. Lily know how I like it and I always get compliment after getting a new hair cut.I can't answer for women who go there but all these year I don't see anyone screaming and ran out the saloon LOL. I didn't want to rave about this place, because I didn't want to give LiLi a big head or whatever, but homegirl deserves the recognition. I am the only asian I know of that has extremely wavy hair. Yuko Systems in Beverly Hills seems to think $800 dollars for first time and $600 for touch up is a fair price for straightening my considerably long hair for up to one year. LiLi at Ming Ly Salon thinks that for my considerably long hair to be straightened by her, using the SAME products, it should be $150. Who won? I think you know. My mother has taken me here since I was 5. LiLi is really the best, just look at her hair! She's the only woman I know over 40 that can pull off a Posh blunt bob with blue/red/purple/pink streaks; and it changes every 6 weeks I go in. She gives me what I want, no fuss, no muss, no upselling of perms or whatever the fuck. Wash, cut (at least 10 layers, underneath and on top), bangs, blowdry, straighten, and style/volumize=$25. It wasn't one of those glamorous and fancy hair studios, but I really enjoyed my experience over there. One of the owner (William) cut my hair... great job! And I loved it. I didn't want anything fancy, and he did just that. Whew.. Thank god he is not one of those chinese stylist that chopped off a whole chunk when all you wanted is a trim. hehe.. It's so hard to find a good barber and I'm lucky I live near Ming Ly Salon. I got my haircut from William, the other co-owner and barber. He's experienced at wavy handsome-style cuts for Asian men (like the Russel Wong haircuts and not just your typical flat-tops). I've brought my boyfriend, my Dad, roommate's husband and other friends here and they're all satisfied clients. As for the haircut, I come once a month and I say to William "just the usual trim, please". (It's the base $10 for men, plus I always give William a $5 tip for the excellent service and attention). I don't ask for the extra services such as washing, after-haircut styling with gel, scalp massaging, coloring, etc because I can do all of this myself. I'm a very satisfied customer. read more

I am writing my first review because this is one of the worst hair cuts I have ever gotten. I have been intentionally growing out my hair for months and only wanted a trim. I recently moved to the area and figured anyone can do a slight trim on men's hair. Wrong. Here's what happened instead: - Way too much length taken off sides and back, basically undid all the previous months of growth - Uneven length between front and back - Uneven patch on one side - Zero blending on side - literally a straight line - When asked to blend, the barber was shocked that I didn't want a straight line cut across the side, and even repeated it to someone else in shock ("he wants it blended on the side!") - Attempted blending not very well done - Somehow decided it was ok to cut straight edges in front and side, but round the back - Zero texturing, everything cut in a straight line Think bowl cut and you have an idea of what you'll get here. After I asked for different areas to be fixed, I got a poorly blended, uneven haircut that was much shorter than I wanted. If you get a haircut here, you'll most likely want to go somewhere else immediately to get it fixed. read more

I've long since learned a valuable lesson over the years about getting my hair cut at an Asian salon: it might be cheap, but unless you tell the hairdressers exactly what you want, they will butcher your hair and give you awful layers that make you look like a little boy or like you're fresh off the boat. I also can't go to American salons, because my hair is straight/flat, so I'd prefer to go to a place that knows how to deal with Asian hair. And I don't style my hair at all, so it is never beneficial to me to go to a $40 salon where they will make me have great hair for one day and it falls flat the next. That being said, Ming Ly has been my go-to place for 2 years. I found it through Yelp reviews because I was super desperate about getting a quick, simple haircut. They usually have 3-4 people working: 2 of them dye hair/clean, while the male (William) and smaller set lady (Lili) cut hair. I have had both give me haircuts, and while I do prefer Lili because she is better at styling layers, William is okay too. I cannot emphasize enough that you MUST tell them exactly what you want. I usually bring a picture, and the for the past couple of times have shown them my license picture (I had a good hair day) to use as an example. Sometimes I do give in to their persistency in working on my bangs, but they usually thin it out way too much and I go home looking like a dog chewed up my bangs. But for $12 (minus the hairwash/shampoo), I can deal with that. Just clip up my bangs, let them grow out, and after 2 weeks or so I look like a girl again! You can usually walk in without an appt where the wait will be 20-30 minutes. If you prefer going in the mornings, there might be a wait because you have older ladies come in who like to dye their hair. It IS a hair salon, so expect lots of talking/gossiping between stylists in Mandarin (but they do play KOST 103.5 music in the background). Although everybody likes to speak in Mandarin, most of them can speak decent English, so don't be worried that they won't understand you! But bring a picture anyway just in case. I came here by mistake! I came here thinking it was Ming's Salon Inc. (I know, one of my many shameful blonde moments but seriously, I couldn't find Ming's Salon Inc. and their business name and address are very similar as well! Not to mention the people at Ming's Salon Inc. doesn't seem to mind since they never bother to call me back regard me not showing up) Apparently those ladies at Ming Ly didn't care much either. I walked in gotten a color treatment (dye) for my hair hoping I can get my hair lighter after my initial awkwardness telling them I suppose to have an appointment at 10AM with them (which in this case, I don't have an appointment at THIS salon). I wanted something natural and dark but still noticeable lighter, something along the line of dark brownish blonde. The color turned out to be a bit too light for my taste but whatever. Then I got my trim/haircut. I was a bit upset with the color but when I asked for the price at the end... "45 bucks" "what???!" - thinking to myself... "holy crap!" That's hecka cheap! Now I am not a complainer. I am never a complainer when it is up to hair, I mean afterall, they grown back. And more people seen to like the lighter hair color on me. This place is nothing fancy, just your regular Asian hair salon. The ladies speak Chinese there (monstly Mandarin) so it will be a bit tough getting your idea or what you want across if you only speak English (which in my case) but things work out overall. Ming ly hair salon was not as great of an outcome as I thought it would be. The people were nice however the hair cut was not that good, their layer techniques are very basic and my hair is thicker in some places than others. I got my hair permed straight and waited two days to wash it. I did what I was told and it did not work. I went back and they told me it was as straight as it would be and would try and straighten a few places, but because of how he cut the hair, it would have been the same outcome. So I passed on that. I've always gone to super high-end expensive salons. A coworker recommended this place and i decided to give it a try. At first impression, this is a little hole in the wall with older people. I decided to take a chance and did it pay off. Lili does a FANTASTIC job with haircut, perm, and color. I've had 2 digi-perms and color with her and received a lot of compliments. Lili's prices are VERY reasonable and the service is good and quick. I recommend going on a week day when she's not so busy and can take her time. I love this place. read more

For guys, they have a man there that gives a good haircut for guys. I was a simple supercuts/fantastic sams guy for years, but it kept getting more expensive, a dollar more here, a dollar more there, and all I wanted was a trim. Started looking for a cheap, but good (is that possible?) place, heard Alhambra/Monterey Park had good deals, and found Ming Ly. When I first walked in, I saw the prices and thought the $10 men's haircut was a typo. Nope. William and Lili are both great, very friendly. I don't speak much mandarin, but they're both professional and quickly figured out what I wanted. 15-20 minutes later, my cut was finished and I was out the door. Most of the customers are older Chinese women, but don't be put off by that. They do a good job cutting guys' hair. The atmosphere is comfortable and the salon feels up-to-date, but not hyper trendy.
