I had a very antique double thumb opener door lock. The wood on the door in which was located was no longer accepting the screws needed to keep it secure. I asked if there was something that could be done other than buy a new door. The technician took care to fill old holes and drill new ones and the entire door works beautifully and looks good, too. Specifically chose this locksmith because a friend of mine works there. However on the day I visited he was out. The two locksmiths who assisted me were generous with their time and suggestions. I needed a couple of keys copied, but the clinker was the skeleton key I needed for a building that is 110+ years old. Copying the keys was easy, but the skeleton key was more difficult. Instead of selling me a couple of keys which may or may not have worked back at home the locksmith suggested I pull the lock from the door and bring it in so they could find an exact duplicate to the key. He explained there were thousands of options for skeleton keys and wanted to be sure they had something that worked. I appreciate the honesty and suggestion as a previous purchase of a key from a larger hardware store establishment failed because the key failed to operate the lock. I have another lock that needs to be reassembled or replaced and will rely on their expertise for assistance. Even though the bus ride from my home in north Minneapolis to their south Minneapolis location is lengthy it was worth the trip. This is a super friendly, honest, and helpful lock and key store (and on-call locksmith, although I didn't use their mobile service) in South Minneapolis! We were having a problem with our (condo) door lock. Replacing/rekeying one of these locks is a big deal, so I took the lock off the door and brought it here in hopes it could be fixed. They were able to clean it and check it over to make sure it was working properly. I left with a couple new keys and a properly working lock, all for way, way less than I expected. I cannot express how great this place is. I had an old safe that I lost the key to and the batteries died so I was locked out. I didn't want to have a locksmith to my home because I'm a single woman living alone and had a good amount of cash in the safe, so I wasn't happy about the idea of anyone knowing that I stored that much cash in my home. I LOVE finding an old school business that just does things RIGHT. My car is 16 years old, and over time the ignition key had worn nearly smooth. Needed a new one. Called the dealership, where I would have needed a service appointment. Stumbled across Minneapolis Lock and Key on 44th and Nicollet. The gentleman who helped me (he had a beard, but I didn't catch his name) was able to "read" my key by eye and cut me a new one on the spot. AND I got a skeleton key which works on the wooden case for my 1890s Husqvarna sewing machine! $33 all told! Bet the dealership would have charged a lot more than that! Went in there with an old skeleton key for a 100 year old house, and some other keys to be made. The guys hand ground the key to work, luckily I was smart enough to take the locking mechanism ot the shop with me. It seemed obvious, that to resolve this issue, its best to take the whole thing there. In a world of automated key machines, and untrained techs, these guys just get it done with the ages of experience. They are not the cheapest, but but quite fair. For the first 5 years I had this car, I didn't have a problem because I could use the remote to open the doors and trunk, but when the remote system eventually failed I needed to finally get a key made. I just moved into a new house that had broken locks and a mess of keys, and called Minneapolis Lock & Key to have the locks re-keyed. Brian came out and was super helpful -- he re-keyed several various manufacturer locks so I only have to deal with one key, and suggested I switch from scary double-cylinder locks to thumb turns, which is so much safer. He pointed out some flaws in the doors, fixed them and made sure the locks and entire doors were working smoothly. There is such a difference now -- all of the doors and locks operate so much more smoothly than before. He had everything he needed with him so it was an incredibly fast process at a pretty reasonable price. Definitely give Minneapolis Lock and Key a call if you need a locksmith! read more

We talked to the same arrogant and condescending guy described by other reviewers. He was down-right nasty. We needed help getting a new key and fob when we locked ourselves out of our car. He person who answered asked where are car is currently located. My husband answered "in our garage." I thought he was trying to answer to discern whether we were trapped by the side of the road or something. He answered, "how am I supposed to know where your garage is." He was so nasty about it. Then he scolded my husband saying "Look, if you are not going to answer my questions I am going to hang up on you." Um, we're trying to answer your questions. Then he asked if we need the key or just the remote. My husband explained that the key and the fob were both on the keychain we lost. The locksmith then says "It is a REMOTE, not a FOB." She told me it was the hinges or strike plate and then handed me a card and told me someone could look at it. O...M...G. I didn't even get to the point where I used these guys' services because my initial contact was SO negative. First of all, the guy answering the phone sounds like he's high; arrogant, slurring his words and SO condescending. He contradicted himself after asking me if it was a house or an apartment - I said house - after which he said they don't service them, again in a condescending manner. And then he said if it was a house they would charge a $65 inspection just to look at the lock, and of course, I understand the fee, which is fine. But...um...did you not just hear me say it was a house? THEN, after asking me about the locks that I wanted replaced, he kept interrupting me saying it was "xyz" when he didn't have all the information. Of course, this isn't my first rodeo, so I said, "no, it has this mechanism and this", during which he cut me off again and said his first availability wasn't for 5 days because they were SO busy. I said "fine, I am traveling and will be back on the xxth of the month so I'd like to arrange an appt..." during which he cut me off again and said something which I couldn't quite understand (again, he was slurring and sounded like he was high), then asked when I wanted to schedule an appt. I paused, then said, "well, honestly, I am so unimpressed with this initial contact, I'm not sure I want to use your services now." Now, get this, he replies (remember the condescending tone? multiply that X 10 now), "well, good luck finding someone else in the area that does what we do..." at which point I hung up. Are you KIDDING me? Run away, my friend...run away! BTW, I only post negative comments like this if it was extreme - I try to give the benefit of a doubt, but this was off the charts.
