There's a canoe access area just before the main parking lot. The public bathrooms are closed for the season.

We kayaked down rice creek from County Rd J to Old Highway 8, which goes through Rice Creek Park. It was amazing! It's hard to realize you are ok the Twin Cities, as you are completely surrounded by nature. We saw cranes, deer, ducks, musk rats, flowers, reeds, calm flowing water, and all sorts of other nature. We did not see cars, houses, buildings, advertisements, or any of the other normal sensory bombardments of city life. The entire creek, or water trail as it's called, is pretty long and goes through several lakes. The portion we went down was about 4.5 glorious miles. The water is pretty shallow throughout and the only rough water is just right after you go under a couple of bridges. If you have access to any paddle powered water craft, go check it out now!

Jensen Lake Trail is part of the greater Lebanon Hills Regional Park, which is so big it has four…read moreseparate entrances. So far I've visited three of the four (the fourth is the Equestrian Trailhead though, and I don't have horses so...). For not being the "main" entrance, this one sure is nice also! There's plenty of parking available, including handicap parking. A short distance away is a large gazebo-like structure with a plentiful number of picnic tables, countertops, electrical outlets, fire pit, grills, firewood, trash/recycling receptacles, restrooms, water fountain, and water bottle refill station. You can apparently rent the gazebo, or just use it if it's available while you're there. Next door to that is a very nice children's playground, with a variety of swings (regular, bucket seat, handicap accessible, and tire swing) and structures. Plenty of benches nearby for adults to watch their kids too. The trail itself goes around Jensen Lake and connects to the rest of the trails around Lebanon Hills (most notable of which is the Voyager Trail). The loop around the lake is quite gorgeous, with many plank/boardwalks as part of the trail. It is mostly shaded, and you'll find a few park benches along it if you need to stop and take a break or just want to pause and soak it all in. I'm going to need to return soon to utilize the portage entrance on the west bank. I've been wanting to try this park's canoe/kayak "trail" for awhile!

This is a beautiful park/trail system that meanders around a couple lakes while getting to see some…read morenice homes and yards. The trail is completely blacktop, no dirt, perfect for bikes. The reason that I stopped here is during the development of this area, I watched the trails and lakes being developed. I always wanted to check them out. As we were driving by, my dog started going crazy like when she gets excited for a nature walk, so my wife and i stopped and took a walk around for the first time. We went around both lakes, there is a bridge crossing between the 2 lakes. It is a couple miles around both lakes. My wife and I want to stop back. This trail system connects to Lake Community Park that you can also find on Facebook. I will check to see if it is on Yelp the next time. That is a good park to park your car at to go into walk/bike. Be sure to look at the photos i took. Very polite and friendly people walking around this lake/trail system.

Vadnais Park offers both paved and dirt trails around the beautiful lake. There are bathroom…read morelocated throughout and the paths were well groomed. If your looking for a short walk I think Vadnais would be great, however if you want to do a loop around the lake you have to walk on the side of the road without a side walk. It was not very safe at all. And if you look at the map it looks like there is an actual trail and there is not. I would not go here to run, but it does make for an out and back scenic walk if you want to walk the trails.

This lovely hike runs along the Mississippi River. As you can see from the pictures, there are waterfalls to see. The wild life wasn't as active due to the cold, but we still heard some birds. You've never experienced listening to a woodpecker until you've done so next to a frozen river. It echoed around like crazy. Even though this is an intermediate level trail, you are often close to the parkway so if something goes wrong it's not a long way to get help. In the winter do bring a hiking partner, cleats, warm clothes, snacks, water, and a whistle. I'm so grateful to have so a beautiful hike so close to the city.

Today, it was towards the end of peak fall colors season and there were tons of leaves all over and while it was past peak, it was still a very pretty walk. It wasn't super busy, but it was busy enough for you didn't feel unsafe. I believe this trail is about 5 miles round-trip, but you can go halfway or as long as you want to. as I said, it's a very easy trail to walk with slight elevation gains but overall it's the elevation stays about the same and it's very safe and it's pretty well marked.

Favorite road bike trail! Long, straight and tree covered,…read moreyou won't get sunburned or blown away. This feels like a rural trail as you pass ponds, farm fields, cows and horse stables. Love that there are only two major street crossings. Two bridges and two tunnels keep you moving. From the parking lot at 694/36 it is 9 miles to the end if you go straight. (There is a horse trail that is next to the paved trail so keep your eye out. I rode my mountain bike on it for something different once. It was a killer 18 total miles though...Whew!) I love that they added an extension at mile 6 where you can go to the right at the split and bike all the way into Stillwater! There is plenty of bike parking so bring your lock and walk along the river or have lunch before heading back. The 5 mile ride from the split into Stillwater is a fast decline. That being said, you are going to have to work a little harder to get back to your car... It is so worth it! You follow a wooded creek and there are bench stops/ photo op's along the way. (This is 22 miles round trip, just so you know. I need a nap after. lol)
