The time finally came for me to renew my license (cause my birfday was coming up), so I searched for the nearest DMV on Yelp and found the one located on Chicago Avenue. The address is a bit misleading, because your GPS will likely take you to the middle of the street. Just know that the DMV resides in the basement of Midtown Global Market. If you want a play-by-play of the experience you'll likely receive, check out Anya's stellar review. Upon entering, you'll notice one woman holding it down for two lines. The first line (the one that you'll stand in first) consists of folks coming in for different reasons. (Dur.) After chatting with the woman, they migrate over to a counter to fill out some paper work then stand in another line to wait for the same lady again. You'll exchange your paperwork for a ticket number. Confused? Exactly. There's plenty of plush seating, and while you wait for your letter-number hybrid to be announced, you'll glare at one of the few glaring TVs above. I'm not sure about others, but I waited for a good twenty minutes. A couple important things here: 1) Consider bringing a book. 2) Bring an electronic device, SINCE THERE IS FREE WIFI THAT DOESN'T REQUIRE A PASSWORD. PRAISE THE LAWD. There are about 20 stalls where people go to receive service, although, not all of them are filled. The person I worked with was really nice, wore a huge smile, and even asked me if I had plans for that weekend. The next time I have to visit the DMV, I might return there. A little confusing with the line situation before entering. I had an appointment and waited in line for 15 minutes until a security guard came around asking if anyone had appointments. There is no sign saying if you have an appointment enter in front of the line. Anyways, cell service is iffy. I recommend bringing a book. Like all DMVs - this is everyone's personal hell. Unlike all DMVs - this one is under a very fun lil ethnic market were you can get snacks prior to your 30 min-3 hour wait! I've been here a few times and have had long waits, and short waits. Longest wait was to get my named changed on my license post marriage. You're not going to have a good time at the DMV - at least this one has food. read more

I needed tabs and didn't receive a renewal in the mail. I went to this location and took a number, I was in and out within 20 mins. I was there for something fairly easy so I think that helps but the staff were all really friendly. If you don't have the documents that are required it does no one any good to berate the location or the employee. Like any other DMV I am sure the wait times can be long and the people watching is PRIME for if you get bored :). Giving 5 stars because the staff were so friendly and nice, the seating and writing areas were clean and the wait time so fast. read more

DMV - also known as torture. After moving back home I had 60 days to switch over my license to MN. I've waited and waited. I didnt want to go to DMV. First of all, they validate parking, so you can park in the lot behind the Midtown Market. DMV is located in the basement/lower level so dont be walking around market looking for it, you need to go outside. As you walk in, you get in line, a lady asks you what you need, and you tell her. She gives you a number. This is when torture and misery begin. Your number is 0587. You memorize your number. You look around and see a bunch of kids running around without their parents supervision. You wish you could go outside. Then you look up. There are several big TV's displaying the numbers that are currently being "served" and other various public announcements, such as don't drink and drive and keep your guns in a safe location. Then you look up again. They are currently serving number 0329. Your number is 0587. You wait and wait and wait. I had to deal with three different people and one of them was quite pleasant, friendly and helpful, the other two were "entitled" governmental employees who could not care less. It is also very hot in there, some people do take their clothes off and it is not a pretty picture. I recommend going early in the morning, that way you can avoid the crowds and get reasonably good service. Oh, and I passed my drivers knowledge test and got a brand spanking new MN licence! read more

This is the worst DMV, I have ever been to. I was turned away, because the personnel working did not know the rules for my situation regarding a license renewal. After being turned away once, because it was to late for tests, I was able to take the knowledge test the next day. Then I was turned away a second time due there lack of knowledge about there job. I asked Bob, a guy who's been there for 11 years, to ask a manager. Bob then told me, "the manager was not there, and he could not ask anyone because it was to late in the evening". This Bob person, had already tried to turn me away, before I took the test, because he didn't know if my second form of ID was valid. I had a 3rd and 4th form of I'd, he then begrudgingly excepted my original 2nd form of ID, which was valid. He made it very clear that he did not want to help me. He wouldn't directly answer any questions and just kept saying I don't know, go to a different location tomorrow. Right after I left, I went to another DMV, about 20 minutes away, with the passed test, and was given a license. They were extremely helpful, and genuinely puzzled with the experience I had at the 29th and Chicago DMV. They wondered why the guy wouldn't even ask someone else, before turning me away. So to sum my experience up into a few short points... °They were very unknowledgeable °They were very unhelpful °They were not polite, and skirted the line on professionalism and being unprofessional. ° And as for Bob, he did his best to ensure I had an unproductive visit to the DMV. read more

First thing you need to know is that this is in the lower level of a very large building with many other businesses (Midtown Global Market - the former massive Sears store). The address is to this large entryway that takes traffic in and out of the block on a driveway, but the best way to understand it is the building sits at the intersection of East Lake Street and Elliot Avenue South. The gap between Chicago Av and Elliot Av has public parking and some other businesses. If you enter the building where that driveway ends, go straight in, then the entrance to the DMV is directly ahead with stairs/elevator to get downstairs. Now that that's out of the way, yes, it's a DMV location like most others. The first desk you encounter asks questions to get you pointed in the right direction, then gives you a ticket so you can wait for whatever it is you're doing. YOU CAN SKIP THAT LINE if you are there for written tests for driver's license tests (regular, motorcycle, Commercial Driver's License [CDL], etc.). If that's you, look for the small sign on a stick about four feet high just to the right of the entrance, then follow the footstep shapes on the floor around to the right to the testing area. The folks behind the desk are experts and have lots of information to share. I found them very helpful about a law change that happened last week. Downside is it's pretty busy and noisy. read more

When we arrived for our appointment, we were sad to learn that appointments are not for test-taking. They are for the license counter. Getting an appointment is worthless if you need to take the written test. Needless to say, we arrived @ 4:00pm, and they were no longer accepting test applicants. NEVER AGAIN-!!! Went there to Re-New my Drivers License in **May 15, 2015** and never received my Drivers License or an update. The month of JUNE passed by and still no-notification. (I've been calling many times by now) Finally, the operator on the phone says the Government just issued my License in JUNE 23, 2015-- What?! So, I'm like okay...well, at least its coming...Nope! JULY passed by, and it is-now- AUGUST 13, 2015 It is O-fficially 3 MONTHS--NO License Fed up of patiently waiting, I go in to find out what is going on. Security is polite and helpful~ wish I could say the same about the DMV Staff. I wait in line to speak to Service Desk, and said I have two things to get done; an I.D. and speak to someone who can tell me where my License is. Service lady tells me, I can't get an I.D. because in the State of Minnesota-- if I do that, I forfeit my Drivers License.... wow, fan-fre'kin-tastic! I wait 30 minutes to be called and O~hoho! That's when the fun begins, I get an old cranky-staff-lady who just got out of bed hair. Who gives me an attitude as to why I don't have an up to date License? Which I replied that's what I'd like to know. Then she goes "did you change your address?" I answer, "No"-- and like a snob she goes, "that's why,"--shocked* I go "what?" "My address is the same!" We then get into a little spat about addresses. After the snob-lady-staff is left salty, she ignores me to make a call. At this point I am in shock of her attitude and UN-professionalism, but I'm giving her the benefit of the doubt and say that I've been waiting 3 Months now for my License and I'm hoping for good news. She flips-a-tit and slams the phone and says, "Do I need to call the SUPERVISOR, because I don't need this right now" *shocked-- Again...idk, why I didn't see this coming* I say "what?" she goes, "Your attitude! I don't need it-!" Then I realize, she apparently thinks I'm attacking her-- wow, **I REALLY DON'T NEED THIS right now** she looks about to cry (what?!) I then tell her I'm just stating a FACT and suddenly she turns bi-polar freak "That's NOT true, we're never Late! It's always 10-14 days!!" she heatedly defends. Frustrated, I retort, "Look at the paper! I PAID in MAY and it is -now- AUGUST-- it has been officially 3 months" Crazy staff lady just murmurs in denial "no, no, we're never late." and goes back to continue her call. Not- without trying to get the last word."Fine, but keep the attitude" If I wasn't a devout Christian, and listening to Joyce Meyers sermon at that precise moment-- I would've given her a piece of my mind and then some, because if she's going to " treat me " like an ill-mannered-trouble-maker...ooOoh~ was I tempted. Was I tempted. Lol Now!! to our final conclusion, the DMV/Gov./Mail basically LOST my License and she of course tries to cover it up, by saying, "There's a mix up- but that's because it was never returned" not-sorry- attitude. I am --again-- WAITING another 10-14 days. Lord help me, Jesus! Wasted time, money and Terrible Staff. Never again. Find a different place to renew you license, save yourself the trouble and bad service. read more

I made an appointment via the DMV website to get a MN license. When my husband and I arrived for our appointments, we learn that appointments are not for test-taking. They are for the license counter. This was not clear and should have been communicated on the website. Unfortunately we missed an hour of work getting there, finding out this information and then the DMV was closed for test taking. They recommend we come back in the morning, which means missing more work. This is never easy. If only we could keep the Oregon licenses! read more
