I went in this past Sunday due to chest pain and coughing up blood. I had made a reservation in advance, but I was still forced to wait 40 minutes past my scheduled time before anyone saw me. The nurse who took me back was visibly miserable, unfriendly, and appeared completely disengaged. Her demeanor made it clear she does not enjoy her job, which is not comforting for a patient in distress. When I finally saw the nurse practitioner, Abigail (or "Abby"), she was robotic and detached during the initial assessment. I explained that I had been sick for three days, felt terrible, and was coughing up blood-tinted mucus. She stated she would do a COVID test and initially dismissed the need for a chest x-ray. Only after I pressed the issue did she reluctantly agree to order one. After another long wait, the same unfriendly nurse escorted me to the x-ray, and 25 minutes later Abby returned to say the x-ray was clear. When I asked about the COVID test, she abruptly said she wouldn't perform one because "there was nothing they could do anyway." I was stunned. Having had COVID four times since the start of the pandemic, I know that antiviral treatments like Paxlovid exist. She incorrectly told me I couldn't receive it because I wasn't 50. I reminded her that individuals with comorbidities, such as being overweight, are eligible. She disagreed and refused to test me for COVID or flu. Abby sent me on my way after writing five prescriptions--without any meaningful discussion on how to take them. In fact, the pharmacist later informed me that two of the medications should not be taken together. When I got home, I performed my own COVID and flu tests, which immediately returned positive for Flu A. I then had to consult telehealth to get Tamiflu prescribed, wasting additional time and money while I was already feeling awful. The lack of empathy, poor medical judgment, and refusal to provide basic standard care were astounding. I spent more money on tests and follow-up care that should have been handled at the clinic during my visit. To add insult to injury, when I submitted feedback through the clinic's survey, I received a canned apology from "Banner Leadership" that addressed nothing. The neglect I experienced is incomprehensible and unacceptable for a healthcare provider. The fact that this organization is responsible for the health of Arizonans is deeply concerning, and I am seriously considering filing a formal complaint with the state. Rating: 1 Star - A frustrating, neglectful, and disheartening experience.

I was pleasantly surprised that the assistant and doctor saw us minutes after I gave the front desk person my insurance information and ID. The assistant took down my vitals and asked about what happened. A short time later the doctor walked in saying "So I hear someone's been running around with scissors." Ha! I probably would have been in a better mood to receive this dad humor had my hand not been in throbbing pain. He was professional, answered any questions I had, and 3 stitches later I was ready to be released back into the urban jungle :p While I appreciate the care I received the actual building is in real need of renovation. Everything was really shabby looking and the room I was in didn't even have a running sink! It made scrubbing up a bit of a surreal experience watching the doctor rub disinfectant onto his hands to do a minor surgical procedure rather than washing them in a sink. Between the initial office visit and one set of labs, I've already spent over $1,000. I was told the labs would "usually come back fairly reasonable" through insurance, but $725 is far from reasonable. I was also told there was a cash-pay option of $900, which is equally concerning. I'm not sure what standard of "reasonable" this clinic is using, because these costs feel excessive and out of reach for many people. It gave me the impression that this practice may only be accessible to those for whom cost isn't a concern. Additionally, my experience during the in-office lab draw was concerning. The staff member who attempted it seemed very inexperienced, she removed the tourniquet before even attempting to insert the needle and then tried to reposition the needle after insertion. Another staff member had to step in and was able to draw the labs immediately without any issues, which was frustrating given that I've been told I have easy veins. On top of that, I would have had to pay another $219 out of pocket for a follow-up lab review that was supposed to happen within 7-10 days, but the earliest available appointment was a month out. At that point, I decided to cancel and take it as a sign. I would not return and cannot recommend this clinic. I would hate for someone else to end up in the same position, especially when you're already not feeling well and just trying to find answers, only to be left with an unexpected financial burden on top of it.

If you have, I empathize. If you haven't, I don't recommend it. Yesterday evening, I had tear-jerking pain from the toothache described above. The after-hours operator at my dental office recommended I go to an urgent care clinic to get the pain addressed, as apparently dentists are unable to call in pain medication over the phone. We hopped in the car and sped to the nearest urgent care we could think of: FastMed on University, which was set to close in 15 minutes. This is a clean and easily-accessible facility. We entered a lovely (and mercifully empty) waiting room. The front desk was not occupied the moment we arrived, but we did see a sign which read that a physician assistant was the only medical provider on-site. I deemed this a bonus! I was hopeful to be seen, and to have my medical issues addressed. A friendly receptionist appeared to talk shop with us, and soon after a curious radiology tech came out to chat too. It ultimately became evident that there was not much they would be able to do at FastMed. I unambiguously wanted pain medication, but they explained the best they could swing would be antibiotics. Well, between a host of infection-related symptoms I do not have, versus general pain so great I can only weep, I'm able to discern what medications I need. The receptionist did recommend a dental urgent care that I do plan on visiting, as well as dosage recommendations for NSAIDs. So, for being a helpful resource, and for being gracious enough to entertain my issues so near closing time, I say FastMed is "A-OK." I am obviously disappointed that they were unable to help me, and mildly annoyed that they deemed antibiotics a usable treatment without checking my vitals. Nevertheless, if you have non-pain-related health issues, perhaps this clinic would be good for you. Godspeed. Now then, back to my regularly scheduled 800mg of Advil. *** An important edit to my review *** It should be noted that the medical assistant and radiology tech with whom I spoke were not qualified to dispense the medical suggestions they made.
