On March 7, 2026, I went to MiO's Designs Barbershop in Kalihi with my 12-year-old son for a haircut and my 8-year-old daughter for a haircut and blue highlights. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I checked in with the owner, Nick, and asked if his wife, Mio, was available to color hair. He said he would check and shortly after told us to come inside.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I showed Mio a photo of the blue highlights my daughter wanted and explained we only wanted the dead ends trimmed. Before starting, Mio said she didn't have blue dye, only purple, which my daughter agreed to. After bleaching sections of her hair, Mio applied the color but said it wasn't turning purple, explaining she didn't know why and showing me the tube labeled "purple." She asked me to take a photo to show my daughter and see if she liked it. Mio then left the room and later returned, applying another dye without explaining the color, which turned out to be blue -- the color we originally requested but were previously told was unavailable. I asked if the first section could be corrected so everything would match, but Mio insisted it wasn't noticeable and encouraged my daughter to keep both colors. She said it was just a test and that no one would see it. I repeatedly told her we wanted it all blue. Mio said she would have to re-bleach that section, and I told her that was fine. She then colored the rest of the highlights blue but did not fix the part we specifically asked her to correct. After washing, the hair was uneven with light blue, green, and yellow/blonde tones and did not match the photo. I asked her to redo it because my daughter's hair looked faded and was not what we wanted. I also asked her to leave the dye in longer because I felt it had been rinsed out too soon. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Mio initially said nothing would be perfect. After I asked a few times, she agreed to redo it.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I also reminded her to color the section she had previously bleached but never corrected. After the second attempt, it looked slightly better but still was not the color we wanted. At the front, the total was $376. I explained that I wasn't comfortable paying that amount given the outcome. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Mio then began yelling in front of other customers, complaining about having to redo my daughter's hair and saying she wanted to charge me more for it, even though she never mentioned any additional cost beforehand.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I explained that it wasn't our fault she had to spend more time on my daughter's hair or use more product, since the issue came from the first attempt. The situation continued to escalate, and I became overwhelmed and started crying, especially because I had six of my children with me and had not expected to be there for so long. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The owner, Nick, then stated that if I did not pay he would call the police.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I told him he could do so because it was impossible to have a conversation while Mio continued yelling. The police were called, and I paid $250 so I could leave with my children. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I've been a loyal customer here for years and have spent a significant amount of money at this shop, which made this experience especially disappointing.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Based on what happened, I would not recommend getting hair color services here. COMPLETELY MESSED UP & PUSHED BACK MY SONS HAIRLINE, & CHARGED ME $100. My 2 boys used to always get their haircuts there with nick, they have tried a few other barbers at mio's who are no longer there but mainly nick ever since they were 10 now they are 15 & 16. I've heard some complaints but we personally haven't had issues and we moved to Hawaii Kai so don't go there much. This particular Sunday I drove them to Kalihi, as expected Nick was booked, but he told the boys an older lady could do their cuts, there's no indoor seating and it was pouring so I stayed in my car. My sons went together with pictures of their cut, nothing fancy just taper sides and top cut down a little and 1 son got a his eyebrows shaped with a razor an additional $5. My oldest called me after his cut to come in and immediately walking towards the door his hair line was completely pushed back the corners of the hair cut were all the way pushed back! My oldest son wasn't saying anything as I could tell he was disappointed and told him to go to the car I was going to ask for Nick. The woman is smiling at me and tells me my total is $99. And some change. I ask her what's the $99 for as we did 2 regular cut, 1 was ok not even that great, but we could deal with it but the 2nd was completely messed up and an eyebrow razor shape. I asked for nick they said he went outside. I gave her $100.00 & told her she completely messed up my oldest son hairline, and is completely overcharging me for something that looks nothing like what we asked for and I wanted to see Nick, I left before I blew up inside the shop with other ppl there getting their haircuts & went to check on my son and take a picture of his hair and get the pic he showed her. Nick came out and asked what happened. I pointed at my son's hair and was telling him she messed it up pushed his hairline all the way back and I paid $100 for that? He was telling me he could try to fix it and I was telling him how can you fix a pushed back hair line? It's cut too much. I took a picture and told him this is a complete rip off for something that looked nothing like the photo and I was going to post this. This was the worst experience ever! Completely disgusted by the way they felt it was ok to still charge us for his cut when it looked nothing like the photo and she messed up his hairline. We have referred many people to this business also. I will NEVER go back here and will tell everyone what happened. Thank god my son's hair grows quickly, & he's good looking, cause this cut made him look like Frankenstein! Mios prices have increased as expected with inflation, but this place is def not worth the prices! Keep looking if you're considering Mios DO NOT GO TO MIOS! One of my friends always had such good hair, I asked him where he went and he recommended Mio's and to see Nick, and I did! He was able to get me exactly what I wanted in the first cut! The way he got me so good I never went back to my old barber! Because it looks so good I'm no longer rushing in every 10-14 days I now only go in every 2.5 weeks even longer cause it grows in so nice compared to my last barber that only had it look good in the few days after the cut. We were in town visiting family when we were surprised with an Engagement Photoshoot. after the initial excitement, my Fiance started to panic, he needed a haircut. We called and Nick was able to squeeze us in at 6:30 PM. I want to be very clear, my finance is VERY picky about his hair. He does not let anyone but his barber of 7 years cut his hair but this was an emergency. The shop was spacious and clean, it had a ton of pictured haircut options to choose from, all of which were impressive. There was good music playing in the background and two other stylist in the shop. This calmed my fiance. After a 25 minute mid skin fade, line up, and beard line up, we were more than satisfied. My fiancé noted that he appreciated when Nick regularly blew hair from his face and washed his hair to rinse any loose hairs to have a better look.
