I've been to several Jewish restaurants, and grew up on the classics, but I've never been to a restaurant like Mishiguene, elevated Jewish cuisine. Ranked in the Top 50 restaurants in Latin America, it's well deserving in my opinion. We shared two apps the sweet potato and charred onion hummus and beef. I wanted to try this restaurant ever since I knew I was going to be in Buenos Aires. I missed the popup that Chef Tomás Kalika had at Intesect by Lexus in 2019 where my son-in-law was a sous chef. This was my opportunity. I seized it. I secured a reservation for my wife and I and was not disappointed. Situated in a neighborhood not unlike Surfside in Miami, this so-called Mediterranean restaurant exceeded all my expectations. From the greeting we received upon entering; to our server, Mariano, explaining portion sizes as well as the many dishes in which my wife could order or that the sous chef could alter due to allergies; to the suggested wines that may accompany our order. I had my heart set on BABA GANOUSH appetizer and PASTRAMIED RACK OF BEEF- their signature dish; the Baba Ganoush had tomato in it so that was out for Edna but another eggplant dish was substituted and it was just what the doctor ordered. The Pastrami preparation I opted for was not available but the PASTRAMI WELLINGTON: Beef Short Rib Pastrami, Mushroom Duxelles, Swiss Chard and Dijon Mustard; Served with Date Demi-Glace and Assorted Peppercorns, I eventually ordered was to die for. Edna opted for the fish of the day which was MULLET in a fine sauce made with Pastis. For dessert, I wanted something different and we got it: PUMPKIN, BLUE CHEESE AND MISO consisting of nixtamalized Pumpkin, Blue Cheese Mousse and Pumpkin Tofee with Miso. it was a small portion but it was delicious. A few words about the ambiance: the inside was beautifully decorated; the lamps hung in a low glow to accentuate the dark wood walls; the Michelin certificates proudly hung in a discreet spot; an outdoor section had been assembled to accommodate the throngs of diners as the interior is on the small size. After Roland our fantastic driver mentioned it's popularity ,Lulu, after checking the menu was GUNG HO! So we toddled over taking an extended fruit stop for cherries etc to stave off Tajo's hunger. On arrival the 2 wines I ordered were out of stock but the Luigi Borsa white wine blend they subbed was good enough to change the order from a glass to a bottle ($50,000 ARS) The mixed bread platter soon arrived as I marveled over the towel like napkins the biggest ever! After our starters of Potato Varniki for Tajo (6) we got Zhoug ...great!(10) and Wagu steak bites (7) with a chutney like condiment...meat very rare but not that beefy. Then we ordered the entrees...Seafood Farfalaj & Farm Chicken. So we waited.......& waited............& waited...........until it got so late we had to box our orders for home to put Tajo to bed .. This reminded us for the 30 minutes it took the guy at the fruit stand to pick out the cherries, wash & polish them before finally finishing the transaction...very typical of the "Portenos" (or people of the port) & their lackadaisical attitude with speedy service being from Buenos Aires When we got back to our nicely appointed AirBnb to eat, the rumor that this place was Michelin rated did not hold up to that level for us ....good..... but not sublime ...........................................maybe try again next year? read more

I have a confession - in the past year I binge watched 7 seasons of Somebody Feed Phil. During the Buenos Aires episode he came here. Instant bookmark. Reservations are easy online - booked several months in advance. The host will contact you the day of on WhatsApp with a generic message letting you know punctuality is important and that our reservation is only for 1.5 hours. Due to traffic unpredictability and rain we arrived 15 minutes early - while in the Uber I messaged them to ask if possible we could come in earlier due to the rain. No warm or anything in the response - 'Open 19hrs' that's it. When we got there all the staff greeted or made eye contact with us. The staff and servers had trouble understanding English and our main server spent more time chatting with his colleagues than attending to us - if they want us out in 1.5 hours - why does it take 10+ mins to get our check? Chicken hearts - cooked to perfection and sop up all the sauce. Worth every calorie and penny. The breads and hummus - nothing special. Good raisin challah and onion jam/chicken fat. The server said we had to order two entrees because they are too small to share. Untrue and we had a ton of leftovers. The second entree so forgettable I have a photo but forgot what we ate. The duck was rubbery - reduction was nice. Came with rice and veg. We were stuffed at this point but I always like to try it fresh before boxing it up. Good thing I did - the rice was RAW. Sorry 1 Michelin star or $ place, I have NEVER been served raw rice. They looked skeptical of our claim and minimally apologetic after it was confirmed by the kitchen. No discount, nothing complimentary to compensate us for the time lost - just recooked the rice (they prob doubled the portion?). Dark moody ambiance, the music was frantic and loud in the beginning but mellowed out later. Unique china sets. It was a lot of effort dining here - we felt like it was a favor to be allowed to dine here. Lack of attention - we felt the need to check our to-go bag and indeed it was missing the bread. I think the approach in the hospitality is lacking here and a touch of humility is needed. read more

If you only have one or two nights pre cruise and want to celebrate and make your time here truly memorable--- this meal is it. The only flaw of the evening, was my own inability to not eat everything I saw going by... Waitstaff was extremely attentive! Personally I found Mishiguene to be very underwhelming, some of the food is so fresh, simple, and delicious (like the hummus). Other items, like many of the main dishes, were bland and everything seemed to be a little potato heavy. The bread was very good though, but the service was slow yet friendly. The ambiance is also very nice, but there are much better restaurants in Buenos Aires that I would personally try over Mishiguene (like Elena or Don Julio). read more

I have high standards coming from Israel, and my friends who aren't Israeli recommended this restaurant, so I know it's hard to meet my standards (I have only found a few Israeli restaurants I've really enjoyed in the states). Still I don't think Mishiguene is worth the cost. Nothing was outright bad here, but for the price and the hype of this restaurant, I expected more. The service was spectacular at mishiguene, the vibes were exquisite and every dish was plated beautifully, but the dishes themselves weren't great. Here's what I ordered with my thoughts: *Breads- fine but nothing special. The bagel was not a Jerusalem bagel, and the pita was average. I liked the challah slices here with raisins! *babaganoush- did not taste like babaganoush (and not in an elevated way). Was edible but a bit sour? *beba ganoush cocktail- like a Mediterranean Bloody Mary. We ordered FAR too much food. The restaurant was recommended by family who had eaten here and advised us on what to order. We knew that the Pastrami on Potato Latkes was a must-have, so we ordered that, along with the verenikes and babaganoush as a starter, to go with the selection of fresh breads and pretzels on the table. While awaiting our food, we enjoyed some very interesting cocktails: we each had a drink, both of which were great - mine was the Lo'ez, which was a fancy gin and tonic with house-made pickle vermouth. This gave us time to enjoy the atmosphere and relax. The lighting is dim in a romantic way, the walls were festooned with photos, magazine covers, and other various items which showcased the unique Jewish history of Buenos Aires. The babaganoush was delicious, but odd. It was a skinned, baked Japanese eggplant gently spiced and so soft you could easily slice and spread it on the breads. I have never seen an eggplant served as a whole fruit but it was fantastic. A rectangular skillet arrived with the big block of pastrami resting on a single, large, dense latke in a dark brown sauce covered in crispy onion strips all topped with a fried egg. As though that was not daunting enough, the verenikes came at the same time. I served us each and we started eating. The pastrami is not like the pastrami I have had at good, kosher delis in NYC or Philly. This was more like a super-tender brisket with incredible flavors. The verenikes were the most melt-in-my-mouth dumplings I have ever had the joy of eating. Unfortunately, I was committed to the pastrami and did my best to devour it. In the end, we finished the dumplings and ate about 2/3 of the meat and potato but had to stop. I am sure that they have great desserts but we just could not eat another bite. I booked a table at Mishiguene weeks ago for my 40th birthday. When booking the reservation I made note that my group, a party of 6, wanted to do the chef's table and tasting menu. After booking, I followed up with the restaurant via WhatsApp to ensure they had received the request for the chef's tasting menu along with a couple of dietary restrictions I had made note of. I was assured everything was in the reservation. When we arrived we were seated in the dining room. A member of our party asked about the chef's table/tasting and we were told that it wasn't possible as they hadn't prepared a menu for the evening. After I showed them the WhatsApp conversation, they offered to move us into the kitchen to sit at the chef's table but that they would not be able to execute the tasting menu. We decided to move into the kitchen and order off of the regular menu. We left our water glasses in the dining room assuming that we'd get fresh waters at the chef's table. Instead, they brought our glasses from the dining room - we had to guess which glass was ours! A person in our party asked the waiter about a wine (60-70 dollar range). He said that it wasn't good and then recommended a bottle that was twice as much. It felt dismissive and like an upsell rather than a recommendation. The food was excellent. And, I appreciate that the staff was very well informed on appropriate dish options for those in the party with restrictions. We ordered most everything as we were excited to try it all. The waiter told us it was too much food. Again, it felt dismissive rather than helpful. They did bring out a dessert with a candle in it for my birthday which was very lovely. I wish I could recommend this place as the food really was outstanding. Maybe we caught them on an off night or maybe we had the one bad waiter in the place but I wouldn't go back and I can't recommend it. read more

Overrated. It used to be good. Service was terrible. The smallest plate of pickled vegetable ( it was 4 pieces and 2 of them were jalapeños slices)was $30 in comparison, the pastrami was $40. It doesn't even make sense. Really disappointed. I ordered an appetizer that they kept saying was coming and never showed up. Not worth it. Not sure how they have a Michelin star. High class Jewish food? I really had no idea what that meant, but with my parents coming to visit me in Buenos Aires during Rosh Hashanah I figured this was the perfect place to have dinner. We made a reservation at a very American dinner hour - 7pm, right when the restaurant opened. Actually, we got there and they weren't even open yet. But we waited outside and read about the story behind the restaurant - immigrants and the importance of foods. The lights were dim when you walked in and there was klezmer music playing in the background. I knew this was the perfect choice for our Rosh Hashanah dinner. We were the only ones in there for awhile, but then slowly other Jewish families entered to celebrate the New Year. The waiter walked my dad through the menu to help him find something he could eat. My mom settled on the cauliflower stake, I got the shakshuka, and my dad got pastrami. They brought out a bread basket with a bagel and challah (I was in heaven already). Challah has been something I have missed on the road and this was so warm and soft. Our food came and the cauliflower stake's flavor was mouth-watering. As I think about the flavor my mouth is salivating. And then we tried my dad's pastrami...I am not a big fan, but this was so good. We also got dessert and that was the only disappointment in the meal because the Spanish to English translation kind of left you thinking you were getting something else than you actually got. The service became a bit slow as parties started to trickle in. The longest wait we had was to receive dessert and then waiting on the check. My dad got the rest of his meal to go and they ended up adding cheese to it which he can't eat so then they made him a completely new dish, which took an even longer time. Me shiguene.While the Buenos Aires culinary scene has expanded beyond the bife maybe gourmet Jewish/Israeli food is a little bit of a stretch right now, which is probably what happened to the elongated bagels they serve that don't look like bagels and definitely taste like hala. But so does the rest of the bread basket. Is that a pita or you are just hala to see me? We did discover that Argentina has oyster, apparently from Rio Negro or so we've been told. We found the borscht sauce that came with them endearing but someone confused foam with cream cheese, while effective continuing the borscht pun it was just overpowering. The kibbeh get this, not enough meat, how?! In essence Meshiguene is where wealthy Argentinian come to taste something raro and foreigners set their antisemitism aside because this Jews aren't their problem and in any case there aren't many working at the restaurant. The food was delicious & plated beautifully. Pastrami is worth the hype. The service was oddly rude - was literally mid conversation with friends when the waiter "jokingly" said shut up to me so he could name the dishes he was dropping off ... not sure how that's funny or appropriate in any sense. Okay food in a chaotic setting. Pastrami was disappointing, under a heavy sauce with mushroom grains (the grains were tasty, pastrami was not). Think frenetic waitstaff with non-stop klezmer music, and tight seating. Not their fault that the Brazilian couple next to us kept loudly shouting random English phrases in our direction, but getting overcharged (think double) at the end after waiting half an hour for the bill was the final nail in the coffin. High calibre fine dining, but while many fine restaurants in the city are quiet and serious, Mishiguene was bursting with life when you opened the door. It was like every table was having their own celebration and the meals were the occasion. We had latkas, corned beef brisket which was transcendental, kibbeh, the Baba Ganoush was a whole roasted eggplant and the best I've had, and a white fish sorbet and capicino for desert. The restaurant has a cool sensibility. Lively Jewish music playing in the background, and classic design influences but with a modern style. Walking in, you know you are in store for a fun experience. It feels cozy and relaxed, yet still upscale. Make no mistake, the food is anything but banal. Chef Kalika takes inspiration from traditional flavors but updates them in such an innovative and unique way that our meal ended up being quite memorable. The food is executed with precision and finesse, with robust flavors. In spite of the discerned approach, everything somehow retains a sense of comfort. Wine list had plenty of reasonably priced and interesting options, and we enjoyed the 2015 Montesco Punta Negra Pinot Noir from Mendoza (ARS 540). We started with a glass of the DV Catena Nature Bodega Catena Zapata sparkling wine (ARS 157/gl), which was just alright. There is a cocktail list and wines by the glass, as well. Overall, highly recommended. The pricing is on the higher end compared to other options in BA (and they charge a cover for each person), but for the quality and overall experience, felt justified. We went last night not on the emptiest of stomachs (as a tourist, it's tough to get hungry here) and yet were all blown away by the quality of the food. Can't imagine how good it could've been had we been starving! Mishiguene is a must go. The baba ghanoush was spectacular, even if you don't like eggplant, this may convert you; the presentation is worth it alone. The pastron on potato latka was perhaps some of the most tender meet I've had; it would make tofu jealous. If you are a vegan, this is the dish to break you. We couldn't finish and took home where it tasted wonderful the next morning, cold. We also shared kibeh, having had success the previous evening with beef tartar as well, and this one knocked it out. I had such high hopes!! First and foremost service here in Argentina is always slower than normal but mostly it is good. Though slow. Service here was slow which was ok but the waitress was horribly rude as was the rest of the staff there. I ordered the pastrami sandwich which was covered with BBQ sauce and pickles. Definitely not traditional and honestly not that good. The fries however were really good. The only bright spot. Won't be going back. Too many other good places in the city to try. read more

Having spent a lot of time in Tel Aviv, Beirut, Amman, Cairo, and all over Eastern Europe, I guess I simply wasn't that impressed with Mishiguene's food. Beautiful little restaurant with excellent service, scrumptious food and a general great experience for dinners. They serve Jewish food with a contemporary kind of twist but nothing too crazy and everything really works with the flavors and the dishes harmoniously. I also appreciate that they play music that goes with the atmosphere, making the whole context add to the experience. There are few tables and they can set up a larger table if you are with a group. I saw mostly couples and some groups of four. They also have a few little tables outside if you want a different seating option. We tried a bunch of different offerings, from their lox and bagels served with a shot of vodka (and trout instead of salmon) as well as the pastrón on the bone and off as well as the lamb dish. All of the entrees were beautifully plated and very large portions that are for sharing. A few of the dishes are served in cookware that makes one think of home style cooking which is a nice touch. Good wine list and can't speak for the deserts but I'm sure they are just as amazing as the rest of the menu (plenty of options without giving you too many choices). Dimly lit modern restaurant playing Klezmer music in Palermo near the zoo serving neauveau Jewish food. Think an Argentine Ottolenghi. Service was very attentive. The night we went Netflix was filming the chef's table so we were seated temporarily in the front area until they were finished. We moved to a more romantic area near the kitchen in short fashion. While we were disappointed that they don't have the tasting menu on Friday and Saturday, they were very helpful in both describing the food and recommending wine. Perhaps I was expecting more, but while the food was good it didn't quite find the wow factor. Stating with the kugel and trout lox, the dill sauce was nice and the small julienne slices of apple lent a sweet crunch, I left wanting a bit more texture or surprise to offset the starch ubiquity of the kugel (more apple or acid perhaps). The whole baked cauliflower risks having too much of a similar taste and texture, but it is saved by flavors that build as the cream and spicy tomato sauce slowly evolve. The chicken giblets are rich and tasty like you'd expect and contrasted perfectly with the accompanying hummus. There is a lot of potential here. read more

The food and presentation are more than fine. The service is only average. Very. I am from the USA but live part time many years in Buenos Aires. I do speak fluent Spanish. I am used to just "average service" in Buenos Aires. But at a restaurant of this atmosphere and price, I would not expect mediocre service. Having to wave down the waiter to ask for another drink or even dessert is not acceptable. I wish this restaurant much success in New York City but the service will have to be much better there to have continued success. read more
