If you're looking for a cake for a decent price, Shirley's business is a great option! I found her through Yelp and inquired on her website. At first I was thinking of getting a custom cake but I quickly realized it was out of our budget--from all vendors, too. I guess I was a little naive in custom cake pricing. If only we had more $$ to drop for our son's bday but priorities!!! Nonetheless, Shirley was able to accommodate my budget and gave me the option of a plain cake with a custom topper. My son's been obsessed with MUNI buses and trains lately so I told her that either one would work. We communicated back and forth through email and Shirley was very prompt in responding. I paid the deposit and the amount due before the time frame. Note that I inquired around the same month of the event date, so somewhat late to the game in planning (I have a feeling some people plan two months in advanced because custom cookies and cakes usually are booked way out in advanced) but it still worked out for me! On the morning of, I picked up the cake and it looked amazing! Shirley's cake tasted great! She let me know that the MUNI bus topper was edible except the label. We chose to have a vanilla cake with chocolate buttercream filling and it tasted amazing! I forgot to take photos of the cross section but this cake was pretty darn yummy. The only feedback I have is that her typed responses can be more formal, with punctuation and less use of acronyms... which will help seem more professional and clear! However I understand that it's her way of expressing herself and it's been working for her... so to each their own, it just irked me as someone who teaches writing! read more

Update: This cake was delicious! I shared with four other people and I have to say that it was soooo moist! I also had a good amount of cake left over as well. And the flavor of the cream cheese filling was amazing! I really loved how sweet the frosting was. All the flavors really tied in well with each other! The frosting was super super soft and creamy, it was very thick and my boyfriend really loved the gritty sorta taste of the boarder frosting. Every bite was like heaven. read more

I recently ordered a cake from here for my friends birthday. I was very hesitant about completing this task for her since I only had about a two week timeline. I found Miss Chan Chan and I contacted her via email right away. The response time was quick and I asked her if she could make a duplicate of the cake I had seen on her page. Within a day or so with exchanging email, I was able to book the cake and for the size I needed. On the day of pick up, I had picked up the cake and it was exactly as pictured. I ended up picking the red velvet with cream cheese butter cream. My friend was really surprised with the cake and she loved it a lot. It also taste amazing and all my other friends loved it as well. read more

We discussed this since March 13 , the details . Money is not problem but the horrible customer service in not providing response to"let me get back to you on tues" and the courtesy to say it cannot be completed since that day but the very last minute. And the last time my cookies were made in a rush and late beyond the time we discussed got blurred and smear out for his name . Moreover , I'm glad this lead me to somebody else that can coordinate and organize better. read more

AMAZING! I found Shirley on yelp and I'm so excited I went through miss chan chans for my daughter second birthday party! I sent my inspiration picture for a bunny themed birthday cake and she matched it perfectly. She was so sweet to work with and the cake was delicious! She also delivered to our location in San Mateo for an added fee which was convenient. We did a Vanilla funfetti cake with vanilla buttercream frosting with matching cupcakes which was a huge hit! Shirley is amazing. I was tasked with finding a traditional peach longevity cake for a birthday and I came across Miss Chan Chan Kitchen! I ordered a cake and cupcakes from her and all were OUTSTANDING! From start to finish Shirley was so accommodating and flexible from changing the design and flavor last minute, to accommodating an every changing drop off time. The final cake turned out so amazing, I will try and add photos to this review eventually because it was truly a work of art. On top of looking amazing, the cake also was one of the best cakes I have ever eaten! It was so moist, not too sweet, and there was not one slice or cupcake leftover. Shirley made my son a dinosaur cake for his 2nd birthday. She was very reasonable in terms of price and very responsive when we were going back and forth in terms of me getting the specs of what I wanted. I had only a vague idea of what I wanted which probably made the process a little more difficult, but she was still able to come up with a nice design with the few inspiration pictures I was able to send her. The cake came out looking great and tasted delicious and the 10" cake that we got was more than enough to feed the ~30 guests that we had. Everyone was very impressed! read more

My wife and I were looking for a cake for our son's 100 day celebration. We saw all the amazing pictures from Miss Chan Chan Kitchen and decided to use her services. Shirley is quite responsive to emails and very accommodating to decorate our cake to fit our theme and son's clothing. We were pleasantly surprised that she even got the details on the shirt too. Our guests enjoyed talking lots of pictures of our son with the cake. I personally enjoyed how the vanilla coffee cake with mocha buttercream turned out too as it was moist and flavorful. Though it perhaps could have used a bit less sugar. Overall I would recommend the cakes here :) read more

With only a few days notice, Shirley was able to get a rush order birthday cake for my mother's 75th birthday lunch. My mom was so impressed and simply delighted. The way her eyes lit up was very memorable. Later she said "I loved it, I loved it"! She also enjoyed the taste and density of the cake. I contacted Miss Chan Chan only a couple weeks before I needed cake and cookies for a Bridal shower. Super happy she was able to squeeze me in. Cake came out exactly how I requested and it was deeelicious! Lots of compliments from our guests as to how moist and tasty it was without being overbearingly sweet. I do not appreciate false information. I messaged her expressing my disappointment the following morning at 8:04 AM. Not days after. I had to pick it up late at night because of my flight. I thanked her, but I was unable to see the details until later. It was getting late, and I put more thought into it before sending a message that included a picture. The cake could've shifted a bit during the car ride, but there was no significant damage or change. Nonetheless, I was thrilled to receive the cake because that's how much it mattered. She took the time to make the lettering like the Star Wars films to the detail on BB-8. She really spent a lot of time constructing! Shirley is easy, flexible, and a pleasure to work with. I had a red egg and ginger party for the welcoming of my son and the cake turned out better than I imagined! I loved the rustic, simplicity, and attention to details on my baby Eeyore cake with my son's name on the building blocks. I opted for the coffee cake with mocha cream for the baby Eeyore cake. I wanted the naked cake style with buttercream instead of fondant. The contrast between the cake and Eeyore was perfect; the color of the cake did not overpower or muted the overall look. As for taste, I prefer the coffee and mocha to be more pronounced in flavor. The cake was more like chocolate but was super moist and the cream wasn't too sweet which I enjoyed. I also ordered a half sheet of Oreo cake. The ratio of filing was definitely more on this cake and was sweeter. You can definitely tell it was Oreo with the cream cheese frosting. I sent a request via Yelp app and Marsha suggested I send an email. This was on a Sunday and the event was in 2 weeks ! When I didn't hear anything via email or a call I called the office and spoke to Ben who apologized for the lack of communication and he would respond via email, which he did a few hours later. After several emails from Ben we were able to settle on a menu in just a few days! We were looking for a Hawaiian fusion themed menu and Ben & his staffto came up with a great menu. W Some of our many items that was a huge hit with our guests were Vietnamese vegan rolls, miso glazed black code, a toss green salad with Edamame and Asian dressing, crab deviled eggs, scallops spoon, chimichuri steak crostini, short ribs skewers, Asian style lamb meatballs, and dessert of fruit cups and mini cupcakes were perfect. There was a few dishes that wasn't as successful but overall everyone enjoyed the food. We had pre arranged to have someone to meet the catering staff early for setup but due to unknown delays they did show up until an hour before the service started which also ment they were rushed to setup the food but they did a good job to get the hot and cold foods setup before the end of the service. Overall they did a good job and the food excellent but arriving late to the event and poor timing to replenish empty dishes was disappointing also dessert wasn't served until most guest departed. The tastings were excellent, and we truly felt heard. They were open to our feedback and made adjustments based on our preferences. The cocktail hour was a highlight - the food was delicious and beautifully presented, and our guests were raving about it. However, the dinner service didn't go quite as smoothly. We were running a bit behind schedule transitioning guests from cocktail hour to their seats, and the catering team served all the food before everyone was seated. As a result, our meals - and many of our guests' - were cold by the time we ate. Additionally, wine and water weren't placed on the tables before the food service began, despite having discussed our wine service preferences in detail during a planning meeting. My husband, my dad, and our venue coordinator all voiced their frustration during the event, and it took longer than expected for the situation to be addressed. Some of the groomsmen even took it upon themselves to grab bottles of wine and serve guests directly, which was helpful, but clearly not something they should have had to do. On top of that, far too many bottles of wine were opened unnecessarily, so we had to send open bottles home with their staff instead of saving them for another occasion. That said, our guests still commented that the food itself was good. We just wish the day-of coordination had matched the quality of the planning phase. With a bit more attention to timing and execution, this could have been a five-star experience.

Sheldon was fabulous to work with, coming up with a great menu out of the box. Some of our guests have celiac, and others are lactose-intolerant; all food was perfectly labeled so these people felt safe eating it. Many guests approached me to rave about the food afterwards, and this is a foodie crowd. Even the recommended beer and wines were just right. They set up the area perfectly, and the staff, overseen by the attentive and sensitive Roma, and were able to accommodate a few last-minute requests (e.g., an electrical outlet and extension cord; rearranging chairs to be out of the sun; extensive speeches that could have eaten into food time). We had a number of updates to our requests as close-in as days before the event, and all were accommodated with a smile. I add that I set this whole thing up from FL and CT, never setting foot on the property before the event. And all went off without a hitch. I recommend Melon's wholeheartedly!

We received catering contracts from several caterers, but Melon's was the only one where we really felt like they had worked with our ideas. Chef Stephen told me at the first call outright that he couldn't do "the most authentic", but he could make delicious food. He was right -- and all my guests (most of whom dislike fusion) were super pleased. People literally raved to me first about the food of all the things about my wedding, especially the red-cooked duck leg and the baklava. 2022 was a crazy year for weddings, and Melons was super busy and a bit slow in responding through the first half of that until the summer. So just be aware of that when you work with this vendor. We booked them without a tasting and pleased at our tasting to discover that we had chosen well. (And were again very pleased at our wedding when the food was exactly as it was at the tasting, except they had taken into account our feedback as well so it was even better!) Finally, the servers were all kind and so courteous and happy for us on the day of. The only sad thing is that I can't eat my wedding food again, to be honest.

I picked up the tray from San Bruno Market in the Portola District of SF (thank goodness for the parking lot!!). Easy pick-up from a friendly store owner/manager(?). The food is still as good as before. I ordered extra Spam and egg onigiri, but some only came with Spam and no egg; still good, but not *quite* as good!! She also substituted a couple of onigiri for the eggrolls that we don't usually eat, so that's a plus! The tray's presentation was, again, excellent. Garlic noodles were delicious, beef and chicken skewers tender and delectable, cha trung (?) very flavorful, and empanadas yummy! Two of the onigiri are enough for a light lunch, but I tend to eat more than that just because it's so good!!

No ifs, ands or buts....until we tried Sonja's vanilla with fresh strawberries. Amazingly good for any kinda cake, let alone wedding cake. So we decide to meet up after getting the sample at a bridal show. We met up with Sonja at the Stanford Starbucks and she was early. and like Dani said, she was on her blackberry but I can't hate because when the wifey is at the mall, this guy is all over his iphone waiting for her to finish. she was courteous and we tried a bunch of flavors. we wanted to try some of her other flavors and she was nice enough to schedule another tasting and we decided to go with her. Sonja had some great feedback for flavor choices (I liked lemon cake the most but she suggested more vanilla/chocolate because lemon can be a love/hate flavor). In the end, we went with a banana cake with chocolate cream layer, a alternating vanilla/chocolate with fresh strawberries for 2 middle layers and a lemon with fresh strawberries and whipped cream for the top layer for us to keep. Her prices were inline/lower than other bakeries that we checked out. We had to put a 50% deposit but who cares...you're gonna need to pay for that cake sooner or later. Can't put that bad boy on layaway. Yes she's a small bakery but like Jenni said, it's a good thing. She really puts forth a great product, competitive prices and you are gonna get some serious compliments. Hire Sonja and you won't be disappointed. p.s. I love cake tasting. where else do you get a ton of cake slices to try for free? Couples should pretend to get married and go on cake tasting dates.

Sonja's prices on wedding cake are some of the most reasonable in the Bay Area, and her work is quite nice, and shoot, by hiring a local independent contractor, you're supporting your local economy, which the Mr. and I felt good about. We met Sonja for our tasting at the local Starbucks and discussed flavors and designs. As Dani L stated, Sonja will bring her most popular combinations for you to try, so if you see something on the list ahead of time that you really want to taste, let her know before your tasting. We absolutely loved our wedding cake. It was beautiful: three tiers, two of them offset squares, the third, a circle, with different geometric designs on each layer and flowers. And it was delicious both the day-of as well as the next day. Several of our guests raved that it was the best wedding cake they had ever had. And as for me, well, I still dream about the buttercream frosting. Really, I have no complaints.

Each cupcake was moist and the buttercream frosting was perfect (not too sweet and not too buttery). The small cake was a s'mores cake. It was sooo good!
