Down and gritty is what comes to mind when you walk into a place like this. It's all about the meat! And the meat is good. I had the small pork plate with greens and baked beans. On this day and a last minute idea I decided to pick up 3 slabs or ribs from Miss Myra's Pit BBQ, unfortunately I was disappointed. I am a fan of Miss Myra's this is why I was little shocked with their ribs. This was my first rib order and I was really surprised how little meat was on the ribs. I liked the caramelized sauce taste, however the charcoal tasting burned areas and the lack of meat wasn't what I expected. The desserts, my normal Thanksgiving and Christmas options are always excellent. They have my favorite Coconut pie and Banana Pudding. But, we need a good meal in front of this. I suggest chicken quarters with the Alabama white sauce and smoked sausage. When ribs cost $25 a slab anywhere you buy them should be something you want to return to buys again. I will continue to get my favorites from Miss Myra's but, done with their ribs. read more

In a world of gentrified local chain barbecue joints, Miss Myra's is an absolute gem. We happened upon it on the way to a track meet, and wow. The food was a perfect representation of Alabama barbecue. The meats were all cooked perfectly, slowly with real smoke. The sides were excellent, and REAL banana pudding. No box involved. Came here for dinner on a Friday evening. Plenty of available tables and not much wait time to order. I knew I wanted to try the classic Alabama white sauce when I was planning my trip to Birmingham and this spot was recommended to me by a few different lists. I'm usually not a huge mayo person so I was a little skeptical I'd enjoy the white sauce, but I liked it more than I was expecting to! You usually don't think chicken for bbq, but I do agree with the recommendations that the white sauce goes really well on it. It has a good tang to it, it reminded me of ranch but with the consistency of a traditional vinegar based bbq sauce. If you love the smell of bbq, this place is intoxicating. It smells so good! I love the smoked chicken, and especially the thigh and leg (dark meat) plate. The chicken is so tender it falls off the bone, and is very flavorful. Sauce is not necessary, but Miss Myra's white sauce is legendary. The white sauce is made with Mayonnaise, white vinegar, salt and pepper. If you have never tried white sauce, try it on their smoked chicken. It is fabulous! Went to get some smoked chicken sandwiches. The staff ignored me for about 10 minutes, preferring to jaw with locals or whiners instead. The perfunctory attention I did get was very brusque to the point of being rude, and they got my to-go order wrong. The 3 (were supposed to be 4) sandwiches were inedible dry white meat. The sauce was gross - I like white sauce, but this had a funk to it that I could not figure out - maybe just old? I had asked for chips but they argued with me that the Golden Flake factory was closed so there were no chips. So we got fries, which were soggy before we left the store. I had high hopes for this, given its inclusion on Andrew Zimmern's show. But like his enthusiastic review of Nikki's West, it was waaaay off the mark. read more

Been hearing about this restaurant for a long time and how good the food is. So, I ended up coming here after leaving the Summit. Once you open your car door, you literally get hit with the pit smoke in your face and from there, I knew I was in for a treat. The ordering process was simple which I ended up getting a bbq rib plate with turnip greens and potato salad. The container itself was heavy which made me more excited to eat once I get home. We tried the Ribs and Brisket and the meat was good. I'm from Texas and I brisket and there brisket was good if the review was just on meat I would have given a 4.5 .. But the sides did not impress at all we got bake beans, green beans and potato salad and devil eggs & banana pudding .. the bake beans were pork beans and not that good the potato salad had no flavor at all bland the green beans were ok and the devil eggs were ok and last but not least we got banana pudding was not good at all very disappointing I do not think the meal was worth the $65 we spent and I do not think we will be back. read more

So, this place, when you first drive up has the look and feel of something special BBQ related that is going to happen to you. Love the old style brick building, the pig décor that they have proudly on display in the windows and shelves inside. Walk up to the counter and place your order .... typical BBQ joint, you have the choice of individual meat plates or sandwiches. Then you pick sides to go along (potato salad, slaw, green beans, hard boiled eggs, greens, chips, etc - that may be all of them). I went for the pork plate with potato salad and slaw. Before placing my order, I told the gentleman this was my first trip ... he made sure to tell me what the house specialties were, including which sides were the best...in his opinion. He also let me know they have some of the best pie around if I saved some room for dessert. My food came out literally in less than five minutes. Now prices are on par with any other place that serves a BBQ plate. My only complaint is that the portion was on the small side for the price. That being said the food was good. The pork had a good smoke flavor and came out dry like I like it .... let me add my own BBQ, thank you! The potato salad was on the dry side, just how mom used to make it. The slaw was vinegar based with just a hint of sweet. Was this a full out no question 4 star place....probably not, but really felt unfair grading them as a 3 star. Be sure and check out my BBQ experience here in the past. Ribs are always spot on even if I haven't written about them in a while. So first and foremost, go try those. More recently, I had a friend that came into town that is big into sweets and specifically requested pies since they don't get that kind of thing in south Florida. Even though I am not a big sweets person, I wanted to make sure and make this experience with all of the fan favorites. Miss Myra's seemed to have the biggest and most consistent variety. I have not had all of their pies through the years. And maybe I have had better specific ones. Hard to say. But variety is what I needed and that's what they had. Overall, every single pie was really, really good. Lemon icebox, peanut butter, pecan and we even threw in some banana pudding. What's not to like when it comes to a place that makes fantastic food from scratch. So good and just another addition to the things I can brag on from here!! read more

Finally got a chance to eat here. The staff was super friendly and talked my ear off, loved it! I got the BBQ plate, loved the way they smoked it and love the fact that it's pulled. They actually know how to cook collards at this place! I also tried the Brunswick stew, I like to compare mine to see if I need to make any changes. I have to say, it was the weirdest, blandest Brunswick stew I have ever tasted or seen. Luckily they gave me some sides of BBQ sauce that I could add to it and that really helped. I was passing through Birmingham and and decided to take a quick detour to Miss Myra's after reading up on Alabama BBQ. Walking up to the restaurant, you could smell and see the smoke coming from the chimneys, obviously this led to instant and unconscious salvations with the brain fully expecting a severing of smoked meats. I ordered the smoked pork plate and the smoked chicken plate. The pulled pork was flavorful but a bit dry. It came with a tangy white sauce which really helped cut the dryness off the meat. The chicken was perfectly smoked with a nice crunch and strong smokiness to the skin. Unfortunately, the sides of green beans, slaw, and greens all fell flat on flavor. Very good BBQ joint. C and I split a Beef and Pork combo with Potato Salad and Deviled Eggs (yes...it's a standard side item). Both meats were very tender and tasty on their own. The sauce was good but not spectacular. I added lemon juice, pepper, and Tabasco to liven it up. Prices are on par with a fancier establishment and about $3 too high. Housebound thanks to COVID for weeks and weeks, finally decided it was time to break free and get out a bit. A great thing about Atlanta is there is so much that's within a pretty easy drive. Our destination was BBQ and we settled on purveyors of excellent white sauce and chicken. Skimming online, Miss Myra's came up time and again (along with Big Bob Gibson's place up in Decatur, AL). Miss Myra's it is... As it always seems the case, Miss Myra's is located in a nondescript neighborhood just outside of B'ham, occupying the end of a multi unit building. The light blue smoke cloud and hickory smoke aroma surrounds you as soon as you exit your car. In that good kind of way. Social distancing was in full effect, so the dining room was closed but they had a few tables outside set up. Parking was a breeze with what looks to be ample parking for not only the restaurant but the other businesses. Chicken is the thing here from everything we'd read. So that was a must do. But, I'm always curious to try other items to get a better sense of the restaurant overall. I ordered a combo plate of 1/4 white meat chicken, which came as breast with the wing, ribs, and two sides - beans and coleslaw. About as true to BBQ a meal as you probably could get. The food The chicken was delicious. Hands down the co-star of the show (more on that in a minute). Moist, just that right amount of smoke and skin that was somewhat crispy but a little rubbery in other places - a byproduct of low and slow sometimes unfortunately. I'd guess that Miss Myra is brining her chicken the day before to ensure it's nice and moist. Trying the chicken without any sauce or anything else and you definitely get a light salt component to the flavor... so they're either dry or wet brining their chicken. It's an extra step that takes time, takes space and takes effort that, frankly, a lot of chicken cooks just don't do. If she doesn't brine, then I'm even more impressed. The ribs were full pork spare ribs, so a fair amount of food but comes with the tips and the associated "hardware" that God uses to hold everything together. If you're definition of ribs are baby backs (now hum that song, you're welcome for the earworm), you might not dig these. Sadly, the ribs had really not a lot of flavor overall. No smoke character, no seasoning (not a demerit, just a choice by the chef), and they were drier than they really should be. I'd skip these next time. The sides were, frankly, kinda forgettable. The beans were brown sugar bombs and that's about it. The coleslaw is that fine dice cut, and the dressing was more heavily white vinegar focused and quite a bit of celery seed. The sauces - I'll admit the concept of white BBQ sauce is a new one to me, but after using their tangy-vinegary-peppery white sauce on that super moist smoked chicken... yeah, I get it now. Their "traditional" red sauce was great too, but the white really made the chicken sing (cluck?). Now, I mentioned a co-star up top. That co-star is the homemade banana pudding. O. M. G. This is down home, hand crafted deliciousness. Nice and sweet overripe bananas in good chunks, a luscious and velvety custard.... just simply summer in a cup. So good. We also tried one of the ice box pies which was itself pretty good, but didn't hold a candle to the banana pudding. Thankfully, Miss Myra shared her recipe (or probably one that's pretty close, but not exactly the recipe) with Andrew Zimmerman's and it's been published. Yes, I've already bought the Nilla Wafers and bananas to let ripen. So, would I drive two hours to eat Miss Myra's, maybe. If I can't replicate her banana pudding recipe from the one that's online... then hell yes. Oh, and it's a family run business, service was kind and the food came out quickly, can't speak for the experience if the dining room were open. Should you support them, yes. So why three stars, it's a tough one because some items shined and others were just ho-hum. If it were chicken, white sauce and banana pudding only, then a very solid 4 stars. But the sides which were nondescript and ribs that were just not great pulled it down. read more

Where to start, service... Don't go if you are in a hurry. Price is about average as all other BBQ places thru out Birmingham. I got the sm pulled pork with deviled eggs and slaw. BBQ had zero sauce, which is a good and bad thing. So the flavor was JUST smokey. Each table has 2 BBQ sauces, red and white. Red sauce was average, nothing to write home to mom about. The white sauce was a mayonnaise type taste. It was not bad but not my taste. All and all it was average at best, not sure i would go out of my way to eat here but.....
