I always heard of and passed by Saw's for years and decided to go in because they're about the only ones offering Smoked Brisket. Mannn, they did not disappoint. Came here with coworker for lunch. He ordered the Loaded Pork Baker and I ordered the Pulled Pork Plate. Both were delicious. One of the best pulled pork place ever, considering I come from NYC. Went to the five points location on 5/14/24. While the food is good I have to say there is not enough value there for the cost. My wife and I had a pulled pork sandwich, a brisket sandwich, fries, onion rings and a cup of Cole slaw with one drink and one water and it was $46.23 which included a $3.00 tip. I wasn't blown away by the pulled pork but it was ok. The service is great but like I said, overpriced for bbq. The sides are $5-$6 which is kind of high for French fries and a small cup of Cole slaw. Great staff and great food. I'm a little disappointed that they do not have some of the sides like the other Saws locations such as Mac and Cheese or fried pickles. The upside is that service is prompt and the food is always fresh and hot. I love the wings and the sweet tea chicken sandwich ,and as far as sides the fries are the best option. The potato salad can use a bit more spice and seasoning. The fact that I live a few blocks away is a good and bad thing hahahaha. What a perfect addition to Southside and within walking distance of my house, to boot! On my first visit I opted for their special, the hot chicken sandwich with special sauce and house-made pickles. I also had a side of pimento cheese and saltines. I've had good hot chicken but this was G-O-O-D. The chicken was super moist, the chicken was quite spicy but was crisp and had great flavor and the honey sauce was the perfect compliment. The house-made pickles added some welcome relief to the spice and the bun was soft and slightly sweet. I'm an avid Saws fan and regularly go to Edgewood, Avondale Soul Kitchen, the Juke Joint, and the Street Truck, so I was thrilled with a new location opening!!! Got in and ordered my usual: a baker with no sour cream and a side of white sauce and a coke. I sat down and merrily waited for the deliciousness coming my way. Until it came. A baker with cheese, butter, bacon, and, green onions. It's not why I ordered . I told the cashier/runner and she told me that's how they come, which I thought was odd no other locations do it like that. The bakers at every other location come with butter, cheese, and sour cream. I even checked the menu, and the only difference is that this location comes with green onions (no bacon). I asked her if they could fix it with just butter, cheese, and white sauce, so she took it back. A few minutes later she came back with this tiny potato with the toppings scattered around on the tray. The first (incorrect) potato she brought out was massive, and a complaint got me this tiny thing. Just dropped in front of me and walked away with a "I told them to put it on the side so you can put it together your way." I'm very non confrontational, so I resigned myself to just quickly eat and leave. She did come ask if it was better, and I let her know I was disappointed with my experience and felt overcharged for what I received. I am extremely happy that this location opened up. It is located where Fat Sam's was previously located. I like how conveniently close it is to UAB. This facility is very clean and the staff was wonderful. I ordered the Pork N Greens platter for $12.00. This platter includes barbecue pulled pork smothered with barbecue sauce, greens, grits, and topped with crispy onion rings. I had to take some food to-go since the helpings were very generous. The food came out extremely fresh and very fast. I also saw on the menu that they had smoked sausage hushpuppies with pimento cheese and red pepper jelly. Oh boy! What a gem this place is. A business associate from the local area told me about this place. So I HAD to try it out. He was right. I stopped in about an hour before their 8pm closing time and had a superb dinner. I ordered a pork plate with cole slaw and turnip greens as my sides. Everything was just wonderful. The pork was very moist and tasty with superb flavor. Nice-sized portion, too. I might order it with sauce on the side next time. But the sauce is not heavy or overpowering, so no big deal there. I thought that the cole slaw was some of the best that I've ever tasted. It is vinegar-based and was fresh, cold, and delicious. The greens weren't fancy. But they were yummy, as well. We are traveling around the USA with our new little RV. I yelped to find BBQ in Birmingham and checked out several BBQ joints and settled on Saw's because it was close to HWY 65. We were not disappointed. The menu is not too large but I like that. They can focus on being excellent on each dish. I am pescatarian and wanted the fried gulf shrimp sandwich but turns out it is seasonal. The cashier Catherine was very helpful. She suggested the bbq salad with the chicken on the side so hubby can have that as a side. The salad had super fresh crisp vegetables, yummy farmers cheese, perfectly cooked black eye peas, and awesome bbq sauce and salad dressing on the side. I just read on their website that they sell their sauce throughout Alabama so I'll be looking for it before we leave the state. Hubby had the Boss Hog pork sandwich which he said was excellent. Super tender pork, excellent bbq sauce. If we were locals we'd be in every week. I really recommend stopping in this place! And I was lucky enough to meet the owner Michael. Overall, dissapointed. I heard rave reviews of this place so I decided to try it out. I ordered the Nashville Hot Chicken sandwhich combo with Mac and Cheese. My first small issue was the price. This order came out to just under $17 before the tip. I am not sure how that adds up as it seems that buying the sandwhich+side+drink would have been cheaper. Onto the sandwhich. The edges of the chicken were burned to the point of being nearly inedible. Besides that it was great, extremely spicy. But these edges ruined 1/2 of a $10 sandwhich. The Mac and cheese was alright. It was heavily lumpy and curdle-y but tasted good. Overall, nothing stood out as great(except the wait time and employees) and most was below mediocre. This was my first time trying this spot, and I was delightfully surprised. BBQ is one of my favorite things to eat, and I am so happy that I found this place. I ordered the Rib plate with macaroni and baked beans as my side. The macaroni was great and slightly reminded me of my mom's Mac and cheese, and the baked beans were not my favorite, but I am open to trying other sides on the menu. In terms of sustainability, I think this establishment is doing ok; when ordering to go, the food is given in styrofoam plates. The sides are also presented in styrofoam cups. In terms of COVID, I think this establishment could improve greatly. There were many customers in the establishment, and some wore a mask; some didn't. However, all employees can be seen wearing a mask. Overall if you are looking for a good BBQ spot, I think that is a good place to go. read more
