I tried Miss Toya's Southern Kitchen while I was in DC, we had reservations booked in advance, but got a call saying there were no openings, so we ended up getting our food to go instead. Not ideal, but honestly... once I tasted the food, I got over that real quick. The Cajun salmon was delicious and perfectly cooked and the sauce on it was everything. Super flavorful without being overwhelming. But what really stood out to me (and what I'm still thinking about) were the salmon bites with the hot honey sauce... OMG. So, so, SO good. Easily the best salmon bites I've ever had. Even without dining in, the food held up and still felt like a full experience. If I'm ever back in DC, I would definitely go back--hopefully to dine in next time. read more

I am so sorry but I did not like the food here and my family is from NOLA. The only item that tasted really good was the crab stuffed oysters. Me and my sister came here for the first time, I got it confused with Miss Shirley's but still wanted to check it out. Simple set up but a welcoming staff. There was a live jazz 2 man band which was very fitting. Denise was our waitress and was very nice, attentive and informing. After the oysters, I ordered the Cajun shrimp pasta. I did not care for it at all, the shrimp was full of seasoning but not the pasta itself. It was like it was thrown on top of the sauce and everything was just mixed in lightly. My sister ordered the shrimp and grits that looked so oily when it came out, we asked Denise if they could make less oily. It was just returned within 2-3 minutes with more oil we just asked for it to be taken back. My sister ended with the chicken and waffles. I wish I would have taken pictures of the items we got because some was good some was bad. We at first wanted to go inside, but because it was Juneteenth and a Friday they apparently were packed. So we decided to get some food delivered I ordered the catfish, broccolini, seafood Mac and cheese, and peach cobbler. So the broccolini was good but the seafood Mac and cheese was some shrimp with the tails still on and crab just thrown on top of the pasta. Not even mixed in like I would done thought. The catfish was alright...but what I didn't understand was they only gave us one plastic weee and no hot sauce, taster sauce, ketchup...nothing! I was welcomed right away and attended to within minutes, which immediately set the tone. I started with a drink and the deviled eggs topped with crab meat. So good. Flavorful, rich, and absolutely worth ordering. I wasn't very hungry but had to get the fried green tomatoes since I was solo. The taste was on point, though the plate didn't leave much room to cut them. A larger plate or extra appetizer plate would help. I also tried the Pink Lady cocktail and the chargrilled oysters with crab. The oysters were a little heavy on the cheese but still enjoyable. Just okay. The staff was friendly but got lost too often. We had to flag our waiter back down to get more water, When my entree arrived, I had to flag down the waiter again but only saw the manager and asked him for a little sauce to put on my very dry salmon blt (ordered w/o bacon). My appetizer, seafood egg rolls, didn't taste fresh and the seasoning was not what I would have expected, however, the dipping sauce was good. My entree, the salmon blt (ordered w/o bacon) was a nice portion of grilled salmon slightly over cooked but seasoned well. The bun was toasted nicely but dry. No mayo, no sauce, dry. As mentioned above, the manager brought me sauce to help with the dryness and the waiter returned with a to go box and bag... My entire meal was still on my plate and I had only taken one dry bite. First time exploring Miss Toya's and can say there were some good options and some misses. The collard greens were seasoned very well and enjoyable. Would recommend as a side. Also the salmon bites were a fav. Ask for more sauce so you can dip them but they had a great flavor and were moist. Had high hopes for stuffed shrimp but unfortunately the cornmeal and extra salt took away from the flavor. If they were flour based would have tasted much better in my opinion. So disappointed that I had to write this review however, my experience at this location was not the least bit satisfying. I ordered the salmon with my size being collard greens and mac & cheese. Just about everybody, my salmon had a bone in it. The collard greens were not chopped huge leaves and compared to the Silver Spring location. The mac & cheese portion was cut drastically. I made a quick reservation and I'm glad I did because this Miss Toya's isn't as big as the Silver Spring location and it filled up fast! Located in a strip mall that I remember from my youth, the owners did a very nice renovation to a very old building! It has a nice sized full service bar and a moderate amount of dining tables throughout. I'll do a scoring food chart. Ribeye: 5/5 Large and perfectly cooked #delicious Fried crab topped deviled eggs: 3.5/5 Sometimes just stick to the basics. Frying the whites just adds unnecessary calories and honestly takes away from the taste. At least give the patrons the option of non-fried. Waffle: 2.5/5 It was too thick for her taste and she's a waffle fanatic. I knew it wasn't good after her first bite. I did a taste test and at best it was OK. Maybe use a lighter batter?!? Surprisingly pleased but not sure I'll return! My family lives in the area and as a result we tend to visit Highlands for brunch when I'm in town. We always pass Miss Toya's to get around to the other side and we've heard some good things about it so we decided to try it out. We were a small party of two and arrived at noon on a Sunday. The bar was basically empty and there were two empty tables in the far back near the restrooms. I usually wouldn't sit in this spot but I was really hungry so I went for it. For drinks, we got two hot coffees with Bailey's. Mom also got a Bloody Mary. The coffees weren't really hot and the baileys was served as a shot to mix on your own. This isn't a problem as Highlands does the same thing but they don't charge $12 per shot of baileys. $24 for two small shots of Baileys is extremely overpriced. The Bloody Mary wasn't the best either. For food, we started with the salmon bites as an appetizer followed by the catfish & grits and the shrimp & grits. All of the food was delicious but overly salty and full of sauce which makes it extremely unhealthy. Obviously, we didn't visit Miss Toya's for healthy food lol but I'm over the drenched in sauce brunch meals (e.g. Milk & Honey, Kitchencray, etc.). The portion sizes of the meals were huge which is nice but they give you very few salmon bites. Now moving back to the ambiance, it was freezing in the restaurant and we were informed that the temperature could not be changed without the manager's permission and of course the manager wasn't there. So we uncomfortably sat and ate our food. This likely also played a role in why the coffee was cold. Anywho, I gave them four stars because our server was extremely kind, attentive and professional. Our server was super friendly and attentive, which definitely made the experience better. We tried the bottomless mimosas, which work a little differently here: you pay $30 and get a large carafe of the mimosa flavor you choose per person. It's a good deal if you drink at least two glasses, but honestly, it felt a little wasteful because there was still so much left over after we were full. For my food, I ordered cheesesteak eggrolls to start which were delicious. Next, I had the salmon bites, mac and cheese, and broccolini. The salmon bites were tasty, and the broccolini was cooked well. The mac and cheese, though, was a bit of a letdown for me. It wasn't very warm when it came out, and the texture was off for me. I'm happy about the service in here. The ladies are sweet, inviting, and pretty attentive. The bartenders know how to make a $16 drink worth $17. I ordered the Creole Island to start. That's the one! Order that! I have zero complaints. The food is all full of flavor. I will say that some of the favor profiles are very similar for things that I, personally, feel should vary a bit more in flavor. I ordered the steak & cheese rolls as a starter because I decided that I would order jambalaya pasta which already features some of the seafood that you would get from the seafood rolls. The rolls were perfectly made and had a good taste. The jambalaya pasta arrived with cheese on top which I didn't expect because it's not mentioned and me being a bit of a New Orleans/Louisiana food snob, saw it as a bit off putting and not true to the spirit of their cuisine. The flavor also was good but I feel like the cheese pushed it into the realm of not tasting too different from the steak & cheese rolls. That was a little saddening in the moment but not enough to not make me scape the plate clean. I still had two rolls left on my starter plate with 4pm arriving to usher in the start of happy hour. Naturally, I had to order another drink. The first was so strong that I accidentally ordered the wrong drink with a liquor that should not mix with cognac but the bartender said it's cool don't worrry and brought me the drink that I meant to order, the Strawberry cognac. It was not as good as the creole island but it hit just as hard and was nevertheless a winner. I ordered the salmon dinner, which was supposed to include fried rice, broccolini, and sauce. I even paid extra to upgrade the fried rice and added an additional side of broccolini. Unfortunately, when the order arrived, it was missing the upgraded fried rice, the sauce, and the extra broccolini. I essentially received half the meal I paid for -- with no refund or resolution offered. It was frustrating to pay for a full, upgraded meal and not receive what was promised. That said, I'm not ruling them out entirely. I'll give Miss Toya's another try in hopes of a much better and complete experience next time. My seafood Mac and cheese was dry and separated, shrimp was hard and dry; and the oil settled at the bottom as if it had been sitting around for a while. I stopped by around 9:15 pm on Saturday, 02-24-24 to make a take out order. They were still quite busy to be closing within the hour. The young man at the door was interrupted at least twice while I attempted to give my order, once from someone who called in an order but ended up hanging up; the other time by a young lady who was packing orders near the kitchen who'd brought an order and discussed some system not working. I ordered the blackened shrimp deviled eggs, a side of mac & cheese, and banana pudding. It was about 30 minutes between when I placed the order and when I received the order. The host told me I could sit at the bar until my order was ready. I sat on the far left side. I'm not sure how the host didn't see me as big as my coat was, but he apologized when he brought my order to me. The bar staff was excellent. Aside from enjoying watching them make various drinks, two different bartenders checked to see if I needed anything. It was one of the bartenders who noticed that I'd been waiting for a while when he tracked down my order. I have mixed reviews about my order. Had I known I'd be paying $13 for two deviled eggs (4 halves), I may not have ordered. The shrimp size did seem to be colossal, but I expected more than 2 eggs for the price. The mac & cheese had a lot of cheese like I like, but it seemed to be dry. The banana pudding was a good portion size, but there was more whipped cream than I prefer. Also, the bananas were all brown. I kinda gave a pass on that since it was the end of the night. I would return again when in the area, but maybe just for drinks as it seemed that everyone at the bar was happy with their drink orders. The Manager on duty informed us that they didn't have a decent table available would we be willing to wait. Sure said I, as long as the wait time isn't longer than ten minutes or so. We waited 20 minutes. We finally get to the table and I ordered appetizers for my main meal and my spouse ordered an appetizer and a main dish. We also ordered drinks. I ordered a margarita flight and he ordered a regular drink (remember this). Needless to say the main entree came before the appetizers. The server slid the main dish in front of the spouse and at the same time she was focused on another table directly across from ours. It took a minute to get her attention after she finished with the other table and we asked for the main dish to be taken back as the timing was off. She got pissed and walked away and was speaking to her manager. The manager said that "they don't remove food once it hits the table". (WTH!!) they took it away then. Finally the appetizers came. The drinks took us asking for them. No explanation of the flight. Had to figure that out on my own. The food is average for taste. Nothing special. If you want crappy service, this is your spot.
