Living on the West Coast, it's hard to find a solid, non-chain BBQ spot. While visiting family in Newport News, Virginia, I made a trip to the cemetery to leave flowers for my mom. On the way back, I saw Rocky Mount BBQ and decided to stop in for some ribs and sweet tea. I ordered the Five Bones plate with two sides. It took about 30 minutes to get my food. The sweet tea was excellent, classic Southern and refreshing. Unfortunately, that's where the positives ended. When my plate arrived, the ribs looked very dry definitely not what you'd expect from something I thought was slow-smoked. As I cut into them, I could tell right away the meat wasn't fresh. One bite in, and it tasted like reheated leftovers, something you'd microwave the next day. I immediately spit it out. The baked beans were delicious, sweet and flavorful, and I ate those up. But the collard greens were bland yet spicy aftertaste and lacked any depth of flavor you'd expect from a southern BBQ spot. I was pretty disappointed, especially considering the meal cost $25. I left a $5 tip out of courtesy, but I left the rest of the plate untouched and walked out to the parking lot to write this review. I didn't even take a photo, just didn't feel the need. This isn't a bash review. Most of my reviews are positive, but I've had real barbecue in places like North Carolina, and this wasn't it. These ribs tasted boiled and possibly microwaved. I wish I had gone with the 2-bone, 1-side snack plate for $10 and saved the rest of my per diem since I am traveling for work. First time trying this place and unfortunately, the last. HAPPY EATING.

"Sliced" pork sandwhich

I walked in at about 2:30pm Today. Ordered a pulled pork sandwich to go. Was told 15 minutes. Okay that's a bit long for a bbq joint to put a sandwich together but anyway, got it, got home and it's like a fatty slab or a medium cooked pork chop or something. Not good at all and actually went into the trash. Will not go back.

Brunswick Stew and fried okra

Food and Service are great. Mom and I get there early to avoid a rush. The parking lot is small and can, at times be tricky to get out

From the service to the food, everything was such a great experience. Free hush puppies with the meal. Loved the Deviled Eggs. So creamy. My Pork Ribs fell off the bone and the baked beans were how I liked them. Hubby loved his plate meal. Tender BBQ Chicken and pork. Exceptional service. Now if only I lived here, but I'm just visiting

Best NC Bbq in The Peninsula, amazing sides, friendly fast service. Reminds me of the BBQ of my childhood in Pine Level, NC

This place is great if you're a lover of southern staples like North Carolina pulled pork, or as we call it, BBQ. I was in the mood for a hearty, classic meal the other day, but despite wanting some BBQ, I saw that this place had crabcake sandwiches and decided to get takeout. I was very impressed with their menu, there were lots of great options. I settled on the crabcake and green 'butter' beans. My only quarrel is that butter beans and 'green beans' aren't the same. Butter beans don't even look like green beans, so I was disappointed when I got my food and it was indeed green beans that were sent. I was also a little shocked by how small the portion size was for the green beans, but everything was really good for the most part.

He was so welcoming and so sweet to our daughter, while taking our order he asked her what she wanted which I thought was sweet that he included her and joked with her. He was upfront about the menu and items he liked and why. I cannot remember his name but he was wearing a tie dye shirt and a cardigan, just want to let you know your kindness goes a long way.

Pulease, tell me why everyone is giving this restaurant 5-star reviews…read more I was recently looking for a restaurant with BBQ beef ribs and came across 'Smoke'. I looked at the reviews and knew I had to give it a try. When we arrived, my wife and I were quickly seated by the Host. And then we waited. And waited. About 10 min later, I told the Host that we had not seen a waitress yet. He was apologetic and promised to find them for us. A few minutes later, the Waiter showed up and took our orders. I fully planned to order the beef ribs, but the cost of $38 was so far outside the norm that I just couldn't do it. (They actually have a sampler platter that costs $66!!) I ended up ordering the half BBQ chicken, BBQ beans and potato salad. My wife ordered the pulled pork platter, sweet potato fries and Mac & Cheese. Both orders came out quickly, but the first thing I noticed about my dinner was that I was having to 'saw' my chicken to eat it. Most BBQ chicken I have ordered at other restaurants is tender to falling apart. But this one definitely fought back, and though the flavor was not bad, I kept having to add the table-side BBQ sauce (which was good) to flavor it. The beans were nothing special- they were BBQ beans. Frankly the best part of my order was the potato salad which was quite good - a bit more mayonnaisey than normal potato salad, but I found that I actually liked that aspect of it. A couple of times during the meal, the waiter stopped by to see if we needed anything which was good to see. My wife said her pulled pork was okay but also needed supplemental BBQ sauce. She said the Mac and cheese was good, but that the sweet potato fries were overcooked. She ended up not eating them which is very unusual for her. Towards the end of the meal, I ran out of tea and started looking for the waiter. When he did show up, I asked for a refill. He disappeared for an interminable amount of time and then finally returned with our bill. I was still sitting there with an unfinished meal and an empty glass, and still had to remind him that I still needed a refill, and had been waiting for it for a while. He admitted that he had forgotten it, but then actually sat down next to us, seeming to have problems entering our bill in their handheld 'point of sale' device. I asked him again if he could get my drink first. He finally handed me the device to pay the bill and dashed off. He was gone a while again, with me still waiting on my drink. I finally just gave up finishing the meal without something to wash it down with. The Waiter finally came back with a 'tea to go' for me. Though I had planned to order desert for the two of us, we just paid the bill and left, checking off one more restaurant that does not understand that they are in the food AND customer service business. So again, someone tell me why everyone is giving this restaurant 5-stars.

If they had they would have heard about missing beer menus, dirty/greasy salt grinders, dead flies littering the window sills next to the tables, slow and disinterested service and a seeming lack of interest of the staff in anything but chatting with each other. County Grill in Yorktown has always been one of our go-to restaurants but unfortunately is fell very short today. We got in early, before the afternoon rush, around 3:45 pm. We were seated quickly in a booth along the front windows and our waitress came over and got us started with cornbread muffins and took our drink order. I did ask for the paper beer list that they always have due to their extensive taps but none were available, a first for me. Neither our waitress or the hostess could explain why they didn't have the normal beer list. I ordered a beer and when asked if I also wanted water like my wife, I said yes. My wife's water showed up almost immediately, mine must have been forgotten but thankfully my beer showed up a short time later. We ordered our dinner, a brisket platter with coleslaw and baked beans and my wife ordered pulled pork. We were one of only two tables in the entire main dining room when we ordered and throughout our meal but waited a surprisingly long time for our food to arrive. When it did arrive, the food looked, smelled and tasted great. The brisket I received was from the tail end of the brisket and was very thin compared to slices from the other end of the brisket I've usually received. I still received the same exact number of smaller slices I usually receive from the bigger end. Not all brisket slices are created equal and today's fell short. My wife used the salt grinder on the table and it was dirty and greasy to the point she had to excuse herself to go wash her hands. While she was gone I noticed the collection of dead flies on the window sill along our booth. Things were just dirty, makes you wonder about cleanliness in areas you can't see as a customer. Although there were a lot of staff in the kitchen and in front of the kitchen none seemed interested in anything but chatting with each other. The exception to that would be our waitress who was very interested in talking to the one other occupied table in the dining room. We had finished dinner and were waiting to pay our bill and get a to-go box for some of the coleslaw. Our waitress was deeply involved in a conversation with the other table and we waited an extended period of time. The multitude of other servers in front of the kitchen had no interest in breaking free to see if we needed anything. Finally our waitress made it back over to our table with the electronic payment machine out, handed it off to me and headed off to find a to-go container, even that seemed to take longer than it should have. Maybe Q-Daddy's is worth a try, maybe they still care and want to prove they want your business and not just ride on prior reputation.

This was a deal-breaker almost, 'cause we really wanted to do the ribs, and there was no indication that some items might not be available. The tacos had that…read moreslow-smoked flavor you can't fake -- the chicken was tender with a slightly charred edge, tucked into warm tortillas and topped with just enough sauce to bring everything together without making it messy. Each bite had a nice mix of smoky and tangy. The buffalo wings came out hot with a crisp outer layer that held onto the sauce really well. The heat level was just right -- enough to notice, but still easy to enjoy without reaching for water every second. You could tell they were made fresh, not sitting around. What stood out was the consistency between both items. Nothing felt rushed or thrown together. The setup itself is simple, but the focus is clearly on getting the food right. Alpha Pit Smokers delivers bold, satisfying barbecue with a straightforward approach that works. It's the kind of place you'd return to when you're craving something with real flavor behind it.

I'm just not terribly crazy about the "order at the counter" style of restaurant if I'm going out to eat. But, I belong to a group that decided to meet here for an event, so I ended up giving it another shot. The interior is still cute, and the concept is nice. I like that you can get mini/micro pours of things. I feel like it used to be a set amount, but now you can literally just pour a taste to see if you like it with a micro charge and then add more or move on if you don't like it. That was really useful since I'm not much of a beer drinker - it took me a while to find one I could sip on. I ordered the sliders - now what I thought was cool about this (and again, I don't remember it being this way the last time I was there, but I also ordered whole burgers last time) is that you could customize your sliders. So I was able to order three different sliders which was awesome. I tried the bourbon, the brie, and the shrooms. Of the trio, the bourbon was my favorite and the other two were sort of a toss up second place. They were cooked correctly and hit the spot. Overall, I'd say it was a notch up from my last visit and I'd be willing to try it again if I'm in the mood for some mini burgers!
