IMO, Eastern North Carolina is the ONLY barbecue! While there are better barbecue restaurants, particularly in North Carolina of course, the Rocky Mount does have very good chopped pork barbecue. The waitress told us that they are on their fourth owner since I started going there as a child in 1963 and the owners must pass on the recipes because i thought the barbecue was just as good as it always has been. Living on the West Coast, it's hard to find a solid, non-chain BBQ spot. While visiting family in Newport News, Virginia, I made a trip to the cemetery to leave flowers for my mom. On the way back, I saw Rocky Mount BBQ and decided to stop in for some ribs and sweet tea. I ordered the Five Bones plate with two sides. It took about 30 minutes to get my food. The sweet tea was excellent, classic Southern and refreshing. Unfortunately, that's where the positives ended. When my plate arrived, the ribs looked very dry definitely not what you'd expect from something I thought was slow-smoked. As I cut into them, I could tell right away the meat wasn't fresh. One bite in, and it tasted like reheated leftovers, something you'd microwave the next day. I immediately spit it out. The baked beans were delicious, sweet and flavorful, and I ate those up. But the collard greens were bland yet spicy aftertaste and lacked any depth of flavor you'd expect from a southern BBQ spot. I was pretty disappointed, especially considering the meal cost $25. I left a $5 tip out of courtesy, but I left the rest of the plate untouched and walked out to the parking lot to write this review. I didn't even take a photo, just didn't feel the need. This isn't a bash review. Most of my reviews are positive, but I've had real barbecue in places like North Carolina, and this wasn't it. These ribs tasted boiled and possibly microwaved. I wish I had gone with the 2-bone, 1-side snack plate for $10 and saved the rest of my per diem since I am traveling for work. First time trying this place and unfortunately, the last. It was overcooked meat, with a sauce that tasted strongly of ketchup, chicken and ribs were not even tender, greasy hushpuppies, no love and care put into the sides. I really hate to slam this place. I have eaten here before, and the experience was good, but today was a different story. Today i saw they had a meatloaf with 2 sides special and decided that was the play. I ordered the meatloaf, with mac and cheese and potato salad as my sides. The meatloaf was awful. I have had better offerings from the frozen food section at the grocery store. It was severely over cooked, which made the taste and texture unbearable. The sides came in what i can only describe as condiment cups. Such a small serving for a side. The mac and cheese was the worst one i have ever ate. It was watery/runny. The flavor was not good at all. I took a bite and spit it out. So i abandon the meatloaf meal and give the hotdogs a shot. The bread was hard, the chili was not good, the meat in the chili tasted old and over cooked, and the slaw was not good either. I spent about 30.00 for food at this place, the only things worth eating was the deviled eggs and the hushpuppies that came with the meal. Great food! I ordered fried chicken which was awesome and the mac and cheese with collards! The mac and cheese was great and just right.(Southern style and homemade) I was on edge on the taste but it stayed consistent and was just right with every bite. The collards was good but lacked just a little seasoning for my southern taste buds which I added at home, I'm from Carolina(rocky mount area) so was only looking for the hint of vinegar and red peppers but was cooked delicious. I just order from this place and I am sorry to say that was the worse decision I made. whatever those dumplings are definitely need to go, at first sight it looked like lumpy flour soaked in water with a little bit of boil to it. No taste whatsoever just plain bland. cabbage is the same thing over cooked and mush and bland not even a touch of salt. As far as the BBQ chicken goes, why would you have the chicken swimming in bbq sauce like the? it takes away everything from what is supposed to be BBQ. After passing this hole in the wall for 2+ years, it was time to make it our next date spot. We came for a late lunch and there's been a steady stream of both dine in and carry out since we arrived; absolutely a great sign! The servers are friendly and always happy to top off your drinks. I had the Fried chicken and rib combo which comes with 3 sides; I chose Mac n cheese, deviled eggs and collard greens. The side menu in itself is impressive, there must be about 20 different options. The ribs were fall apart tender & delicious and I was very happy with the vinegar sauce I selected instead of the bbq sauce. The chicken was some of the crispest I have had in the 757 but lacked a little flavor. Still good just not the best I've had. The collard greens were fantastic, and I'm not a huge fan normally. The deviled eggs were full of flavor. I'm not a huge fan of casserole Mac n cheese so I'm probably not the best judge of this one. I tasted some of the pulled pork my husband ordered and it was perfect! I didn't know Rocky mount did catering but will suggest it for our next work event. We had our first barbecue in Virginia here and it was a great experience! While I believe Georgia pulled pork is superior and Texas BBQ is better than any in the nation, the 'cue here was pretty good. The complimentary hush puppies were delicious and the amount of choices of sides was outstanding (fries, applesauce, macncheese, and the list goes on). Our waitress was exemplary too. She saw my baby drop her pacifier on the ground and offered to wash it off for me. When she brought it back it was hot. I'm in no way a germaphobe, but the fact she washed it in steaming hot water was a little sign that she cared and takes the extra step in making the customers happy. For years I have passed this restaurant that is on Jefferson Avenue, near Main Street Library, and not once have I try their food, until recently. When I walked into the restaurant, I looked and felt as if I had walked into someone's home (which is not a negative). This place felt like a home with nothing but tables and booths. As I sat near the entrance, I slightly chuckle when I saw the cabinets. They resembled the ones in my apartment. A few times I was tempted to just take off my shoes and fold my legs as I ate. (Maybe next time lol). This place felt so much like home that I actually wondered if they even accepted credit card. Lmfao A small basket of hush puppies and butter were given to me a long with the menu. Both tasted home made including the butter, which was really sweet. A couple times I had asked myself if it was smart or healthy to constantly dip my puppies in this butter as of it was dipping sauce. Lol Even though I won't be getting the hamburger steak again, because of my personal preference of just "hamburger" with the onions, I overall enjoyed the food. I was somewhat disappointed in the portion size of my sides, maybe it's because of how much I enjoyed it. Going off of the menu that was given to me, i noticed there were no sweets. I wish they would have sold some sweet potato pie or chocolate cake. Maybe even banana pudding. Just a suggestion. People who never been to Rocky Mount BBQ, should really try this place. How am I the first to review? I know...most of the patrons are senior citizens here, but there's a good reason for that demographic dining at Rocky Mount- old people know good barbecue, and old people from North Carolina are phD's in barbecue. Like my dad, for instance. My dad introduced me to Rocky Mount and we've been for lunch several times. There's real good NC style barbecue here, whether you eat in, or take it home to heat it up on your stove. The sides are excellent, and they have hot sauce on every table. There are two other things that make this a 5-star joint: amazing service and amazing free hushpuppies! Seriously, these hushpuppies are so damn good, you HAVE to get a second helping. The servers are attentive, all are sweet and friendly, and every single one of them will offer to refill your sweet tea and put it in a to-go cup before you leave. You can be FULL for less than $10 a head for lunch or dinner. For a home style NC barbecue & sides experience with sweet tea, you can't do better until you cross the border. read more

I saw the many, many excellent reviews and so tried the place out. I guess I'm gonna be the lone voice of dissent. The ribs tasted boiled or something. Yuck. No smoke flavor at all. No char at all either, so they didn't even go from the oven to the grill like some places do. The sauce everyone is raving about (the table next to me even asked for extra to go) is just thick ketchup as far as I could tell. It tasted okay, but not really what I consider "bbq sauce." Ordered dinner from this restaurant from Uber Eats. I ordered at 3:30 and didn't get my food until 5:15 because the restaurant didn't have it prepared. Half of my food was cold upon delivery and I live within 5 minutes of the restaurant. The chicken was overly dry and not in the vinegar BBQ I requested. The "All you can eat hush puppies" were perfectly golden brown and a great start to bring my mouth to watering while waiting for my "small saucy bbq sandwich with coleslaw +fries + drink for $7.19."
