The menu looked really good and they have some interesting items. We love Cone Slingers so we decided to kill two birds with one stone and while I got a scoop for a snack, hubs ran over and got some takeout for us to have for dinner later. We tried the half chicken, pulled pork, and ribs. All were very good. I love the wide selection of sides and we chose beans and collard greens. Sophia and I arrived at this little spot over the weekend for lunch. In this area, we always head to Cone Slingers for some ice cream (which we did afterwards), but never ate here. They're well known in the Hampton Roads area with three locations. So, it was time to give them a visit (their 1st opening was here in Carrollton) and see if it was legit. We were greeted by the hostess behind the counter where you place your order. We took a few minutes to look over the menu before making a decision. I chose the combo of the Bubba Burger (subbed the cheese with pepperjack and mayo with yellow mustard) and their onion rings. The dine-in is a bit dated, but there were plenty of seats available for seating. And TVs were up, with one showing off the food and the other on ESPN. The food itself was pretty good. The burger was cooked perfectly and there were enough toppings to keep it all together. The onion rings were to die for. The coating was very good and actually tasted a little sweet. Not sure what type flour they used, but it was super crispy. Sophia had the fried catfish combo which she enjoyed as well. All in all, a very good lunch for the both of us. Excellent service, the staff are very friendly coming and going. They will check on you here, bring you the food and pick up any left overs. The chips and salsa are exquisite. Sweet tea is country like John Denver riding in a John deere tractor while listening to Willie Nelson. Visited for first time Wed. 3/19/2025. Friendly folk and competitive prices but their brisket sandwich was not worth purchasing again. It's a chop sandwich but there were some larger pieces that pulled out of the sandwich and were tough. For brisket I really prefer tender, moist slices on a sandwich--a great indication of brisket done well. Fries were good and the selection of sauces were also good. The lemonade on the soda machine was empty--just got cold water. I might return to try the pulled pork but right now I am more inclined to go elsewhere. read more

This is one of the places I go to the most for takeout and a fast casual lunch/dinner. Their smoked wings are delicious, especially with the stingin' honey garlic sauce! I also love their smoked burgers, pulled pork, fries, and onion rings! They also have affordable kids meals that include a main dish, side, and drink. Kids also eat free on Tuesdays. They offer five different BBQ sauces, but I don't like their sauce options as much as other local BBQ restaurants. read more

Less than thrilled with this BBQ joint. Stopped on Friday evening to take dinner home for the Queen and I with great anticipation based on reading the reviews. First, the Queens ribs were dry and burnt. Yep - they slid off the bone because they were overcooked. Next, I'm not sure if my brisket was really brisket as all I could taste was the sauce which covered every micro-inch of the meat. My experience tells me restaurants pre-sauce and over-sauce to cover up poor quality BBQ. Next, the sides were as basic as it gets. I get better macaroni and cheese from Kraft or baked beans from the can. There was NOTHING special about these sides. Finally, between the flies and the wait - when I was the only person waiting for food - I just didn't like sitting in the establishment. Flies everywhere. Waited 15-20 minutes for the above food with no one else in sight. Best thing of the evening was the hush puppies - I'd go buy some more of those, but nothing else. I'd like to give this place a 4.5* but can't. The catfish is the best I have absolutely ever had. It was amazing. The people are super friendly and really a nice place to stop for lunch. There were three of us. The other two had the brisket plate. I'm sure the brisket was typical Virginia style because it was served in the "pulled" fashion. Having lived in Texas and also smoking quite a bit of brisket, I much prefer sliced. However, it was my fault I didn't think to ask how the brisket was served. It was very good but I much prefer sliced. The beans were good, okra amazing along with the mac'n cheese. I would definitely go back for the catfish. The catfish was outstanding. read more

My favorite is actually the catfish; if you like good catfish this is DA BOMB! Their ribs are generously portioned. I think their best meat dish is the chopped pork with the vinegar sauce. I'm not a huge fan of sweet bbq sauces but theirs isn't overly sweet Their cole slaw is really good too, like how KFC's used to taste before they changed the recipe. Good ol' Yelp helped me discover this local place to eat. Orders are placed at the counter and brought to your table. Lots of options, from entrees to sandwiches and burgers. I ordered the chopped pork plate with sides of corn on the cob and mac & cheese. Noticed two busy men doing things like dusting and making sure the dining area was neat and clean. turns out they were Bubba and Frank, the owners! The entree had plenty of food! There are dispensers of sauce on a counter, so you can choose between eastern NC, St Louis, and "soppin sauce". Now any true NC person knows that Eastern NC barbecue already has some of the sauce on it. The sauce did have a good Eastern NC flavor, so I will let the "I had to add it to the barbecue myself" slide.Chopped barbecue was done the Eastern NC way and had good flavor. Ample portion. The corn on the cob was an excellent side. It was a "real" ear of corn, not the mini ones a lot of places serve. It was served hot and wrapped in tin foil. The mac and cheese wasn't that impressive. it was good, but most likely some premade item, not freshly made on premises. They were running a lunch special that allowed you to get a sandwich or burger, fries, drink and banana pudding for $10. That sold us. The food came out in a timely manner and the employees were friendly. My husband and I enjoyed our pulled pork sandwiches. It wasn't the biggest portion of meat we've ever gotten at a BBQ place, but for the $10 lunch special made it well worth it. I didn't realize they had the barbecue sauces at the sauce station until after I finished my meal but the sandwich was good without it. First time there, last time there. No one greeted us when we walked in. So we had a seat. We soon realized we were not gonna get waited on. So we went up to counter and ordered. (Around the corner). We saw servers giving people complementary chips. So I went to counter and asked for some. We got 2 French fries in our chip basket, eww. I got the wrong sides twice with my meal. I gave up. Their sauces are all spicy and weird tasting. They bring your food to you but you have to go get your own silver wear. If you get hush puppies, you have to go get butter. We went on sunday afternoon. The line was long behind us. All the tables were full. There were people waiting for take out. We tried the brisket, carolina pulled pork, half chicken, ribs, fried okra, hush puppies, macncheese, green beans, and slaw. Meats were pretty good. I like a thick cut brisket and theirs is thin. If you smoke meat you know when to cut thin and when to cut thick. Green beans were canned. Hush puppies were weird gooie, and lacked corn meal. Mac n cheese seemed store bought, so did the chicken and dumplings. Ocra was good... probably frozen. The staff was super nice, the tea is good. If im out there ill eat there again.
