Lovely! The only coffee shop on the island. The owner is a gem and after having a conversation with her, I learned some valuable information. First off, she won't serve anyone who is on their cell phone so make sure your pictures are taken after you visit. I appreciated this as it reminded me of my time in France where patrons are encouraged to stay, mingle and live in a world without screens. I wish we had more of this. Secondly, she doesn't have a cell phone. She lives on the island with a good old fashioned land line. Again, if you ask me, I love this for her. I told her that Mission Hill had great Yelp reviews and she giggled asking who is even writing about these things. All this to say, if you want to support local when in Madeline Island, this is a great opportunity, Mission Hill also carries produce such as vegetables in season and other local pantry items such as honey and syrup. There are all sorts of other items as well like beeswax candles, sweatshirts and board games. My husband ordered a regular coffee and I got a hot Americano with a shot of vanilla. Both were normal and nothing extra or fancy. In summary, this shop brought me so much joy and simplicity. I hope to live my life in my older age similar to the owner. To start.... I've never felt such a strong inclination to write a Yelp review but here we are. My girlfriend and I were looking for a nice little coffee shop to stop by before we leave the island. We had good experiences at the shops surrounding it and thought it would be a nice way to end our vacation. Oh, how we were wrong. We were "greeted" by a very rude employee to begin. A random male then came up to the counter, shirtless, and the employee lit him a cigarette. The place was absolutely disgusting, dirty and musty. My girlfriend inquired about the mocha and the employee made snarky comments regarding how he has no ice to do iced coffee. Totally fine. He then proceeds to pour cold brew into a cup and hand it to us, where we finished making our own coffee- including a crusty, unsanitary spoon sitting beside it to mix it. No utensils, no coffee cap. He also made a rude comment about how he'll try to make it "like white girl coffee." Very strange encounter after having a good time on the island. After reviewing the numerous other reviews commenting on the sanitary conditions of the business.... I will confirm that this place is DISGUSTING. The questionable bakery items in the window were just that, QUESTIONABLE. They did not appear to be anywhere close to fresh. Trash and other dirty items strewn about the counter. It is unfortunate but it appears that this business takes as much pride in its cleanliness as it does in its customer service. What an absolute dump. Menu up, but "kitchen closed". Scones looked like week old. Edit - I'd angrily written this review before my wife came out with coffee (at the very least they had overpriced mediocre coffee) and one of said scones. It was definitely one of the worst bites of food I've ever had - incredibly stale, weird bitter aftertaste, and hooray! A hair too! Coffee was overpriced. Trash everywhere. We biked here for a early morning cup of coffee mid-week while staying on the island. We got there a little early, but even at their posted opening hours they weren't ready or open yet. Thankfully it was a nice day so we waited. The service was amazing, and the woman behind the counter was so friendly! Definitely made it feel like a cozy, welcoming coffee shop rather than some corporate chain. The coffee was alright. We ordered two lattes, the flavorings were just from a bottle so nothing to write home about, but still the coffee was pretty great. Unfortunately this seems to be the only option for coffee - it is full of junk when you walk in and even though they have a full menu of coffee drinks that include espresso they will just serve you coffee. I think the espresso machine is just for show. Also they have no ice so everything has to be hot - as was told to me kind of rudely by the person working there. A very sweet lady was working her butt off trying to serve all the customers coming in for breakfast food and coffee. A 1 person show and nothing else on the island was open. The grill was closed. I love this place it is exactly what you expect to find on a North shore island. Very Northern exposure esque. Family friendly, sit back and chat with the owner who has been there for 20 years on the island. They have great organic food, books, gifts and this is the hub of the community for many. The baked goods seem like they are right out of Grandma's kitchen. Kitschy place that is welcoming to all. We enjoyed our coffee (which was not as strong as I would like) and treats and the atmosphere on a blustery day. Best of all was the fact they went above and beyond when our daughter left her bike helmet behind and only realized it once we were on the ferry. So she called Mission Hill from the ferry, and Maria made sure the helmet got on the next boat back to the mainland. WOW! Thank you, Mission Hill! That's what I call Wisco hospitality. read more

This place is so lovely, largely thanks to the incredibly sweet folks who run it. My family and I visited the island this weekend and were looking for a place to grab lunch, which is difficult on a small island where the few dining places are either closed until Memorial Day or only open for a couple hours in the evening for dinner. A police officer recommended Mission Hill, and even though they were clearly getting ready to close, Marie insisted we come in. She and her grandson, who was working the cash register, were both SO sweet. Our sandwiches were delicious, and the baked goods looked phenomenal (my sister got one of the cinnamon rolls, which she said was fantastic). The place is a little cramped and very cluttered, but it feels cozy and loved, and I like the eclectic style. I definitely plan on visiting again the next time I'm in the area. read more

We had a very warm welcome when most other businesses were closed! The shop has great tasting coffee and hot chocolate and we had fun shopping the T-shirts and sweatshirts. I think this may be the only coffee shop on Madeline Island -- so clearly it's the best. The coffee was actually fairly good, but the Blueberry muffin was SO good! Probably the best blueberry muffin I've ever had, cause there were SO many blueberries in there. Way more berries to muffin mix ratio... But a few chairs and tables outside, this place was always the happening little spot in the mornings. (We went here twice.) I can't confirm, but I'm assuming they had WiFi here -- as both mornings I saw a couple patrons with their notebooks. read more

This is definitely an eclectic coffee shop. It's not our typical cute and cozy coffee shop, but instead is kind of filled with junk. I felt like I was at a garage sale with a counter in back selling coffee. It's definitely a different atmosphere. I'm not sure what was with all the random toys and other items for sale in the main room. There were only a few tables, but we took our drinks to go. They also have another room attached to the main room that has shirts and Madeline Island knick knacks for sale. We stopped here twice on our stay. Once we ordered a chai tea. The flavor was great, but the drink wasn't really hot. This is fine becuase you can drink it right away, but it does get cold a little fast. The next day we ordered a hot chocolate and some breakfast. I had a bagel and my hubby had a brownie (yes, a brownie for breakfast). I wasn't really a fan of the hot cocoa, it tasted a little bitter to me. I would have preferred a muffin or scone, but I could tell they were at least a day old since they were the same muffins as the day before, wrapped in plastic wrap. The bagel was your traditional Lender's white bagel with regular cream cheese. The brownies were definitely fresh since we could smell them baking when we walked in the store. So, I just spent the last four days on the island and I absolutely love waking up early and having coffee at Mission Hills! Its the locals place to hang out! This coffee shop is owned and operated by Madeline Island "year rounders". They have a at least five different brewed coffees to choose from at all times plus the specially made coffee drinks. You can always find a current newspaper to read, left behind books and of course the local chatting/banter going on around you! This shop is filled with local authors books and native american jewelry. don't ever, ever judge a book by its cover! Shame on the hard reviews for this coffee house! They bake everything they sell and love their customers! Its an Amazing place to hang out! read more

Update 7-27-18. Unbelievably this place keeps getting worse and worse. There is so much clutter that It seems impossible they could ever vacuum much less wipe down a surface. And that's the front room. I can't imagine what the kitchen looks like. The health department needs to take a serious look at this place. Check out the Island Market for coffee instead. Just. So bad. Rotting potatoes in a basket in front of the counter, dusty jars of sauces for sale, faded t-shirts for sale, toys and games for kids covered in disgustingness, dirty tables and floors. The baked items are likely shipped frozen and thawed from some warehouse. They certainly tasted that way. The hot chocolate was from an envelope with an extra scoop of ghiradelli chocolate stirred in. The staff barely have room to move behind the counter because it is stacked with just... crap. It was like getting coffee at a border-line horder's house. We go to Madeline every year, and twice we have gone here. The first time we thought maybe it was a fluke. The second time, we threw our coffee and hot chocolate out and said never again. read more

We ordered a mocha and a chai-both tasted fine and were decently priced. The shop itself was a bit messy and quite cluttered. One of three places open on the island during weekdays in winter. We took the ferry here from Bayfield on the cold, blustery and sunny morning of Dec. 8. We walked around the port area a bit on a freshly-plowed street (slippery) and eventually had to get inside someplace to warm up. Wicked cold wind there! The one open coffee shop was just the place to do so. We each ordered a coffee drink from the pleasant, friendly woman behind the counter (who turned out to be the owner, Marie) and then we grabbed a seat at one of the few tables set up. Other people came in to get something to eat for lunch from their friend Marie and then sit there to eat it and joke around with her. After that lunch crew of 4 left, we chatted up Marie and had a very pleasant time doing so. Got to know her and also a bit about the island and its inhabitants. Turned out that she spent some time (in either '96 or '98) in one of my favorite little towns in Alaska. She and her husband live on this island (as do her daughter and grandkids) and they bought this business in the late '90s. The wide mix of items in this shop reflects the island's isolation (much like that town in AK). You must offer a "wee little bit" of many different things because islanders need someplace to buy things in order to live on the island (rather than pay for a $13 roundtrip ferry ride, without car, to the mainland). Besides coffee and tea drinks and sandwiches, chips and the like, they offer some dry goods, fresh produce, select books, decorative doodads, outer wear like work gloves and hats, souvenirs, clothing, booze, beer, wine, jewelry, etc. They even had for sale a 2017 calendar comprised of (copies of) art work by the grade schoolers of the Island - sold for their school's fund-raising. There's also a pile of current and old magazines to peruse in order to catch up on "celebrity news". Spending about 2 hours in here with Marie, we left there after I had a warm hug from her, feeling like I've made a new friend way up there in the northland on Lake Superior, one of my most favorite places (so far) in the world. read more

There is nothing redeemable about this coffee house. The cappuccino did not have a rich flavor, the foam was not adequate, the ham and cheese croissant was ok, and the counter girl did not smile once. Never come here! read more
