From the moment we walked in, we felt like this was the place to be in Bayfield. It is not only beautiful inside, but everyone working was warm and made us feel at home. The menu changes based on what they can source from the farmer, so you won't find a menu posted online. I think that is part of the fun of the experience. We chose a beet salad which was beautifully presented and tasted as good as it looked. I chose the burger for my entree and it goes down on my top five burger list for sure. Juicy, salty, cooked to perfection! They don't have a full bar liquor license yet, but are very creative with what they are working with. I had a sake espresso martini, and it was great! Can't wait to visit and The St. James Social again, and it will be on my to-do list next time I'm in the Apostle Islands. read more

Great dining experience, I have only gone on pizza night but the pizza's are great! The ambiance is wonderful!

Delicious fancy restaurant focused on rotating seasonal items. Tons of non-alcohol mocktails. We felt we had a good selection of food as a vegetarian. Vibes are impeccable. Service was friendly and available but not overbearing. We also stayed in the accompanying boutique hotel which was great! Continental breakfast was also delish. We didn't try the sauna but next time we will! Only advice there is to bring a noisemaker or fan as the road noise was a bit loud for us in 201. read more

They only have a license to sell beer and wine. Pretty good selections though. I do make some "mocktails". The service was outstanding. We celebrated our 31st anniversary here at St.James Social in Bayfield WI on Thursday night and came back again for their Sunday brunch today..... absolutely phenomenal! The food is outstanding. This is strictly a review for the St. James Social restaurant as we didn't stay at the hotel. The space looks great and I was pretty excited to be there. The menu had some interesting dishes and some of the food was good, like the onion tarte tatin and the beet appetizer. I'd give both a perfect 10. The Margherita pizza had a delicious sourdough crust but the basil was completely burnt which seems like a rookie cooking mistake. That's where the good ends. The fish and chips were overcooked, dry, and tough. It was legitimately bad and there are a dozen or so places in town that have substantially better fish and chips for 1/2 the price. I'm not sure how they managed to screw up fish and chips so severely. The lobster mushroom risotto was the biggest disappointment. The risotto was gummy in texture and a bit underseasoned. The lobster mushrooms must've been cooked to death because rather than being firm and plump as they should be, they were soggy like some cheap button mushrooms a few days past their peak. It would be one thing if this were a $13 risotto at a chain restaurant but the quality and execution were embarrassing for a $30+ dish. Along with the crappy entrees, the overall service sucked. While our appetizers arrived fairly promptly, there was an unreasonably long wait for our entrees. The owner was our server and she noticed the unreasonably long wait because she came by with a complimentary salad and said our food should be coming soon. It was enough for each person to have a few small bites, which seemed like a half-assed attempt at remedying the situation. The space is beautiful and I can see the appeal. On the surface, it *looks* like the type of trendy place that could exist in a bigger city and there aren't many places like it in Bayfield. That said, it's all smoke and mirrors at the moment. Perhaps the owners and chef are simply inexperienced, I don't know. With the space being as wonderful as it is, there's potential but I certainly wouldn't recommend it to anyone as it is because the quality of the food and experience are completely unacceptable, especially in this price range. read more

St James is a diamond in the rough! We happen to be in town in February, sorry Bayfeild isn't all that great in the winter, anyhow we stumbled across SJS, and wow! They food was fantastic, our waitress was so genuine and easy to carry a conversation with and the ambiance is perfect for the area! Absolutely the ONLY place anyone should even consider staying at if your visiting the beautiful Bayfield Wisconsin. The building is beautiful and cozy, and it compliments the cozy charm of the town as well. But, what really sets it apart are the owners. Genuinely some of the kindest people people ive had the pleasure of meeting. My wife and I chose SJS to celebrate a deeply meaningful milestone - her successful fight with breast cancer. Having recently completed chemotherapy and radiation, we needed somewhere to go to decompress and reflect and just reconnect with each other - without the ever-looming presence of her illness, which was our life for the last year. Truly the most difficult chapter of our lives. My wife saw Bayfield and knew it was the perfect choice for us. Best. Decision. Ever. The owners were prompt and gracious for anything that we needed and the quality of everything was just MILES above anything some big chain hotel could ever offer. We loved our stay. Even with one mishap on our part (our sweet but, unfortunately anxious, rescue dog chewed up their really nice/comfy duvet) - the owners were so gracious and understanding, they told us we didnt have to pay for the replacement despite us being fully willing to cover the damage. They were extremely compassionate and gracious, especially to our pup, and it made an impression on us. We are extremely grateful. To the owners: Thank you. You made a real difference for us during a time when we finally had the chance to decompress and gather ourselves back up and, for that, I am truly grateful. Our trip was perfect! My wife and I truly wish you all the success in the world and hope that your establishment is around for many, many years to come because we will be back! My group of 8 dined at St. James Social last night and had possibly the worst meals we've eaten in a decade. Most had pizza and wouldn't even take home leftovers because it was so subpar. I ordered the expensive fish and chips, which featured dried out crumb coating on the fish and dried out roasted potatoes, all resting on a bed of squishy, overcooked asparagus. The best part of the meal was the side salad, which was fine. This food-not-worth eating took two hours to arrive. Our server kept making glib comments about how understaffed they are, but he never offered a gesture of good will, like a comped glass of wine while we waited. I'm sympathetic to the staffing difficulties of local restaurants, but since we had booked a week in advance, I would have preferred rescheduling to a less busy night instead of the ordeal we had. While we waited interminably for food, we were subjected first to loud, unpleasant recorded music and then even louder live music, requiring us to shout while we attempted conversation. All told, we were there nearly three hours and bolted without considering dessert. Bayfield really needs a decent restaurant or two. The renovated building of St. James Social is beautiful, and I'd return for a glass of wine at the bar. But I can't recommend eating there. read more

I stayed at this gem a few weeks ago. The high-end finishes in the room were beautiful and the "extras" such as yogurt, granola, cold bottled water, and bubbly water in the open fridge in the hallway were a nice surprise! The sauna was a treat. If you're looking for a boutique hotel with unique touches (including record player and albums in the room), this is your place. I took my girlfriend here for her birthday dinner while we were traveling, the atmosphere + service couldn't have been better, our server was a friendly person and refreshingly great at their job.
