I have been a patient of Dr Guthrie since he opened his practice. I have always appreciated his pain free work and I know he keeps up on the latest technology. Just a few weeks ago I needed a crown replacement for an old crown from many years ago. (not Dr Guthrie's work product) I was very surprised by the new crown process he is now using. The crown was an upper molar. Dr Guthrie and his assistant used a hand scanning device to scan my lower molars on the side of my new crown and then after removing the old crown they scanned my upper molars. They showed me the 3d scans that were incredibly detailed. I came back the next day and the crown was ready to put in place. (it was actually ready a few hours after they scanned my mouth but it was end of day so I returned the next day) They have a robotic system in office that creates your crown. When they put it in place it fit perfectly. There was no adjusting or sizing required. Basically he just glued it in place. It was such a really stress free experience! I always highly recommend Dr Guthrie's work but this experience with my new crown really exceeded my normally high expectations! read more

I have had years of dental issues due to allergies. I am allergic to the tools and the glues. Dr. Guthrie listened and understood the difficulty I have when treated. I live in Las Vegas and travel to Mission Viejo California to be treated. I am close to 70 years old and will say he is the most caring dentist I have ever visited. The dentist in Las Vegas wanted to pull 4 teeth and put do implants, I sent my x rays to Dr. Guthrie and he suggested an office visit for a first hand look. After my exam he determined that I needed one tooth pulled (which I expected) he also did a crown and root canal on the tooth next to the extraction. While I am not a fan of going to the dentist, if I have to go this is where I will in the future. In fact have an appointment in 2 weeks for cleaning. His staff has been amazing. I recently got dental insurance with my new job, and my regular dentist doesn't take it. I am VERY hesitant to try a new dentist, I had a terrible dentist as a child, who did needless procedures he wasn't qualified to do, causing years and years of issues, retreatments, loss of a tooth, with another tooth slowly failing. Last time I saw a new dentist they told me I needed SRPs (deep cleaning) which I totally didn't need as my numbers were good and I had had my teeth cleaned 4 months prior. All that being said I was scared to try a new dentist, and I'm a weirdo who loves getting my teeth cleaned and usually looks forward to the dentist even though I've had a traumatic past. Dr Guthrie's office is beautiful. The staff is lovely. They took my temp upon entering. I filled out my paperwork and was taken back for X-rays including full FMX. He easily could have told me #31 wasn't looking good, since it has an abscess on the root, and needed to be extracted and have an implant put in costing $x amount. Instead he let me know he wasn't worried about it if it wasn't causing me any pain. He did my cleaning himself and was very gentle and thorough. He complimented my teeth, said my implant looks good, crowns all looked good and healthy, even though I'm sure some are getting up there in their life expectancies. I believe he is a very trustworthy dentist. Very happy to have found him. read more

My family has been going to Dr Guthrie for 6 years now. From regular cleanings, to bleaching, to braces to fillings and veneers, we've received a variety of services here. I've been to other dentists for cleanings and gotten nicked by the tools, but that's never been an issue here. Billing and insurance are always taken care of by the office staff so it's very convenient as well. Dr Guthrie explains what needs to be done and is very good at what he does. I had to get a veneer for a yellow tooth (missing a root, I guess I biffed it a couple times as a toddler) and the veneer is the exact same color as the rest of my teeth. Yay! read more

As far as getting your tooth cleaned, you may run in to some dental hygienists who cleans your teeth well but might spray or have rinse water spilling from the side of your mouth. The facility has good equipment even though it's situated in an older business park. What I really like about this place is that they never charge me because I have PPO. Other places will charge me extra (i.e. Mission Dental Group charges me upfront before they will even admit me). But the thing that really makes this dentist better than other ones I've had in the past is that I usually never feel any pain regardless of the work they performed. The dentist is really good at what he does. I've had several chipped tooth and he was able to shape to a point that I can't even tell that there was a chip there in the first place. I actually had a chipped tooth that I went to Mission Dental with and they had this junior dentist work on it and didn't do a particularly good job. That happened 3 years ago. I now have a larger pocket than before and food always gets stuck there now. All in all, I really like this dentist. read more

Dr. Richard Guthrie is compassionate, honest, humble, consultative, conversative and a MASTER in his field. He is by far THE BEST dentist I have ever had and that truly is an understatement.  He came highly recommended by a friend of mine as I was having issues with a tooth that a former dentist had crowned several years prior, and I absolutely dreaded the thought of returning to them to have it fixed.  As a new patient of Dr. Guthrie's I came with a lot of deep rooted fear of the dentist, having had 2 very traumatic experiences as a young child and teenager in England (need I say more). I shared my history with Dr. Guthrie and he was most attentive and understanding.  Long story short, after examining and x-raying the tooth which was mobile and painful it was evident that there was a lot of bone loss, but Dr. Guthrie recommended that we baby it for a while to see if we could save the tooth and gave me a regime to follow.  Fast forward 1 year, several cleaning appointments and another x-ray later, the tooth was not improving and was now giving me pain, so Dr. Guthrie suggested that we look to have the tooth removed and an implant put in place. I agreed. On 1/19/22 I went to have my tooth removed. I had a mild oral sedative and Dr. Guthrie numbed the area very well (didn't feel the lidocaine shots either).  As I sat in the chair, Dr. Guthrie was talking with me and letting me know that he was just checking the tooth here and there and that I'd just feel a little pressure.  A minute of doing this, with no pain, just a bit of pressure, I was under the impression that he was perhaps checking to see if the crown was loose before pulling the tooth.  He asked if I was still ok and I said yes, to which he answered "great, we removed the tooth." I was so surprised and relieved that I started tearing up.  I was absolutely flabbergasted that he'd already removed the tooth.  I was expecting a lot of tugging.  Nothing at all.  His technique is incredible!!!  He walked me through what he was doing after that (putting in the bone graph and then suturing).  Didn't feel a thing!  When I got up off the chair, I hugged him.  He made this normally dreaded process such a good experience, it is hard to put it into words. I have had chronic problems with my teeth for many years and had always been told I needed a lot of expensive restorative work to address them. Much such work was done, at great expense, before I decided to get a second opinion on my oral health from Dr Guthrie. Not only did he advise me that this work was not necessary but he determined that I had serious periodontal problems and a chronic dental abscess that were not even being addressed. Alarmingly, another dentist then advised me that this problem was best addressed by removing all of my top teeth and replacing them with a dental appliance. But Dr Guthrie was committed to a course of treatment designed to protect what nature gave me and address the problems I was having without that drastic approach. After a series of procedures and strict adherence to dental hygiene at home I am really thrilled to say my oral health is very solid now. Dr Guthrie had it all right: his professional skills are extremely diverse, he addresses problems in the least intrusive manner possible, his manner is extremely confidence inspiring and I am thrilled with the results of his prescribed treatment. Dr. Gutherie was my dentist for many years. My husband was in the military, and we were stationed in Orange County since 2005. I always expressed my concern to the hygienist and the doctor about having gum disease since genetics was not in my favor. I maintained my appointments, and made sure that I followed through with meticulous home care. Dr. Gutherie always assured me that my teeth and gums were fine. His cheerful personality always made me feel that I was receiving great care and I trusted him. I paid out of pocket of my cleanings, X-rays and exams since military insurance was not that great. My husband retired, and we moved back to our home state of Florida. I was smart and requested a copy of my X-rays before we moved. Imagine my shock when our new dentist told me that I have lost a severe amount of bone around my teeth, and that I need thousands of dollars worth of gum treatments. I decided to seek a second opinion, and I brought a copy of my X-rays. I was shown the severity of the situation and was referred to a periodontist. I was told that the evidence was apparent on the Orange County X-rays, and could have been prevented years ago. They explained that bacteria was festering in areas which my brushing and flossing could not reach, and that was deteriorating the bone structure. Not one time did the dentist that I put my trust in ever explain this to me. I always received a pat on the back, and was told how great my teeth looked...and to keep up the good work. I read a review that the same thing happened to another patient. Well Dr. Gutherie, who is going to pay for all these gum treatments and the pain that I will have to endure? I will never be able to get the bone back. I trusted you! You have failed me and have neglected me. I have filed a formal complaint with the CA Board of Dentistry, and will be reaching out to an attorney. Please do not have your office manager Richard reply to my comment since this is now a legal matter. I would give zero if I could. Sadly for this review I can say the dentist himself is wonderful. The front office and especially Nysha the billing woman is the worst I have ever dealt with. After confirming my insurance they quoted me what my portion of payment would be for non needed dental work. The price was good so I approved the appointment even though the dental work was not necessary. After the appointment and having paid my share of cost, I get a large bill. I call and Nysha stated that it is my problem and to pay it. She cut me off every time I began to talk. I would stop talking and wait until she was done. Every time I began to speak she would immediately cut me off again. She should not be working with customers! Rudest person ever. Do not go here. They will quote you a price never verifying if it is correct and then demand you pay the extra. In any other type of transaction when you are quoted a price, and all goes as planned, you should not be charged more than what was quoted. Nysha needs to be fired for her rude and very unprofessional behavior. I should not be asked to pay for more just because a front office did NOT check my insurance as they stated they did. I have been living in San Diego for the last 3 years, and have been having a lot of trouble finding an honest dental office since I arrived. It's been very frustrating. Everyone I tried wanted to tell me I needed expensive services and treatments that I KNEW I don't need. I was referred by a friend to Dr. Guthrie, and even though it's over an hour's drive each way for me (when there's not traffic), I won't be going anywhere else now that I know this standard of excellent care and skill! His treatment approach is very conservative -- he wouldn't recommend treatments I don't truly need. I appreciate that he can do the things other dentists have sent me to specialists for, like root canals. (But he will do all he can to save a tooth before going the root canal route!) Just today he did work on a tooth that was the same work I had done on another tooth previously, only Dr. Guthrie's work was FAR superior. He also had to fix work done elsewhere that didn't hold up! He is honest, competent, caring, and friendly, and his support staff is the same. Dr. Guthrie has been my dentist for 12 years. I, too, cannot say enough good things about him! There is no better dentist in South Orange County. He has impeccable standards and expects all of his staff members to do top notch work, so you can rest assured that no corners are ever being cut. I know with great confidence that my teeth are clean and well taken care of. He is also extremely trustworthy and is not going to push you into getting dental procedures that are not necessary just so that he can make an extra buck. There was a short period of time where, due to my company's change in dental insurance providers, I was unable to go to Dr. Guthrie. The other dentist that I went to was horrible! She recommended all sorts of dental work that surprised me. Dr. Guthrie was so kind and gave me a free second opinion, even though I was no longer technically his patient during that brief period of time. Dr. Guthrie is honest, highly skilled and uses the latest technology for all his dental equipment. I have been seeing Dr. Guthrie for years now and I can tell you his the best. I have had bad dentists and now I know the difference. If your avoiding a dentist because you are afraid of injections, I can tell you I barely feel his injections. Recently I had a root canal that had to be redone due to it was improperly done by a previous dentist and it got infected. I visited his office without an appointment and within 20 minutes Dr. Guthrie told me what needed to be done. The next day he did the work and said it would be sore for a day then it should be fine. That is exactly what happened. In addition all the dental equipment is state of the art. Dr. Guthrie also has his own lab in his office to make temporary crowns.
