Growing up as a kid and in elementary school here in So Cal we had to do reports on all of the missions this one however wasn't on the list. We really enjoyed visiting and learning the history of it. Maybe I'll go back home to Arizona and do a report just for fun. Thank you to the city of Pala for preserving a beautiful piece of history to Southern California.

This was the first mission in California that I visited. There's not much to see except the simple church interior with lovely hand-painted walls and timber ceiling. Since it's near the casino, you can weep to your god in one of the pews after you've lost all your money at the slots.

On our way to Julian, we stumbled upon this Mission church in Pala, CA. Mission San Antonio De Pala! It is a branch (asistencia) of Mission San Luis Rey. Founded in June 13, 1816. It is a Catholic Historical Site. There is a museum, gift shop, gardens, cemetery, and a chapel. Masses are still celebrated at the adobe chapel to this day. Interesting fact, the (belltower) campanario is believed to be the only freestanding one of its kind among all the California missions. We were able to see a few areas of the mission. The cemetery and gardens are situated behind the campanario. The chapel was open so we were able to say a prayer inside. Unfortunately, both the museum and gift shop were closed the day we passed by. Those two places are open Wednesday through Sunday from 9am to 4pm. Mission San Antonio De Pala is not a destination for most folks unlike the Pala Casino close by. Still if you are in the neighborhood, drop on by. Learn a bit about the history, and say a prayer. Amen!

Like Michael G. next door, I am also not a dedicated Catholic, more of a cafeteria Catholic if the truth be told. My husband is Agnostic but we greatly enjoy visiting old churches and cemeteries for the history, old beauty and art. The mission is not a disappointment and our visit to the cemetery first was humbling and then the church itself, was pretty amazing. I have posted several pictures of the various grave sites and it's humbling to see how many people died at such ages. There are several priests that are buried together and oddly enough, they all seemed to have died within a few years of each other. Perhaps they served all over the country and came back home to be buried. The cemetery itself has many weather worn mementos by the loved ones of the folks who have passed, even the really old headstones. It is as well taken care of as it can be I suppose, out in such a dry place but it is peaceful. Before we left, we stopped in the church and that experience in itself was lovely. The chapel is small but very well maintained, quiet, gently lighted and there was holy water in the entrance so that even an old cafeteria Catholic like me could bless herself. The altar is a gorgeous homage to native art and native saints and it just smelled and felt like heaven must feel like. The ceiling is made of handhewn timbers and he walls look handpainted. I sat there for several minutes enjoying the ambiance and praying quietly. Visit if you can, you won't regret it.

While I am not your most dedicated Christian, I can tell you that this place is a great place to visit even for those of us whom may need to brush up on our sacraments. Situated on an Indian reservation, only a few minutes from the Pala casino, the Mission San Antonio de Pala is a well maintained relic of a spirited and storied past. The mission itself is wide and sprawling, and has many areas to be seen. When you enter the parking lot, there is a school area that houses several classrooms, a play ground and even an "historical jail" To the left is the burial ground that dates back to the 19th century. Contained therein is a beautifully maintained bell tower. Around the corner from the cemetery is the church. Narrow but long, rich with history, not gaudy or embellished with gold like most other churches. Wooden pews, and adobe walls, it remains comfortably cool even amidst the hottest weather. There is a beautiful garden area contained beyond the gift shop, which is definitely worth a visit.

Stopped by to check out this mission which is not considered to be apart of the 21 Missions of California, but is considered to be an asistencia to the San Luis Rey Mission. It is located in the middle of Pala. Admission is only $2 for Adults and $1 for Children. This mission is small and takes appx. 45m to observe everything.

Built as an extension of San Luis Rey, one of the only remaining missions that support the local community. Just around the corner from Pala, it's a well worth stop.

This church is very very old and it's a historical building. What a great place to visit to get the character of the old churches. The garden is very beautiful. I really enjoyed my visit.

Amazing place. Connects with local tribal patrons too. Well worth going. Stepping into the chapel was absolutely spiritual and moving.

Call in advance to visit the gift shop. Just like other industries, after the pandemic there is a shortage of staff.

Where the former is loud and brash, the other is laid back and serene. Where the first requires a struggle to find parking, the later has space galore, even right in front of the half dozen or so bars and restaurants that are the local economy. We were staying nearby and drove through to get a feel for the town center. It was just three blocks square, with stately trees and a few small commercial developments. Some of the older places were closed down and abandoned, while three were open for business with outdoor seating and live acoustic music. Not in the mood for what was offered cuisine wise, we slowly drove out of town, passing a beautiful peacock jumping over a fence, until we found our way to Jefferson Avenue, the back route to Temecula that parallels Rt. 15. We joined the hoy polloi in the touristy hot spot for a short night of sensory overload. Old Town Murrieta seemed secure in its quietude, and maybe it was onto something in obviously not attempting to compete with big brother down the road. Still, with a little bit of effort and savvy marketing it could be the cool alternative to all that dusty sparkle nearby. Or, maybe, it already is.

Tucked away inside the massive 285 acre Kit Carson Park, you'll find Queen Califia's Magical Circle…read moreGarden by renowned artist Niki de Saint Phalle. Completed and opened to the public on October 26, 2003, this whimsical, meaningful, and colorful sculpture garden is surrounded by an incredible 400 foot snake wall. Once you meander through the mosaic & mirrored mini-maze, there are nine freestanding sculptures: Cathead Totem Birdhead Totem Yelling Man Totem Bullhead Totem Untitled Totem (Bird on a Square) Kingfisher Totem Step Totem Snake Totem Each totem is something marvelous to behold, and de Saint Phalle's mosaic work is simply spectacular. There are also 3 freestanding benches faced in travertine marble by Pierre-Marie Lejeune that measure from 13-20 feet in length. In my opinion, the standout feature of the garden is the central structure called Queen Califia and the Eagle Throne. It is so beautifully unique, and the space underneath almost feels sacred with the golden egg (former) fountain and the spectacular celestial ceiling. Queen Califia was a legendary black Amazonian who was believed to rule a terrestial island of gold and riches "to the right of the Indies." It is only fitting that this special garden has been erected in her honor. In fact, this is the only American sculpture garden by Niki de Saint Phalle! The garden is surrounded by a locked fence and is only open on Tuesdays and Thursday from 9am-12pm, and on 2nd & 4th Saturdays from 9am-2pm. Docents were available to answer questions today, and they are usually onsite during the hours when the garden is open. This special space is certainly worth a visit, and it would be lovely to pair it with a hike and a picnic in the park for sure. Keep in mind that there is a short walking trail that you need to traverse to get to the garden after you've parked your car, Additionally, you can hike in from other areas of the park as well. Be sure to take a look at the story boards to the right of the entrance facing the snake wall before you enter to gain more history and context for this special installation that we are lucky to have in Escondido. Entry is free and parking is free. There are bathrooms in the park. I took about 20 minutes to peruse the area, and that was enough time for this visit (it was also 90 degrees), but do plan accordingly depending on your interests and needs. Peace.

After checking out TripAdvisor, Queen Califia's Magical Circle Garden stood out. I'm all about art, especially when the scale is impressive like it is here. We stopped by on a Tuesday morning around 9:30 a.m. Make sure to check out their website to see when they're open because their hours are quite limited (Tuesday and Thursday from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. when I was there and every fourth Saturday from 9 a.m.-2 p.m.). It's located inside Kit Carson Park. I didn't have any trouble parking in their lot and then walking to the sculpture garden. Once you arrive, take in all the artist, Niki de Saint Phalle, created. It's weird, it's cool, and it's trippy all in one. There's some information you can read to learn more and while we were there, there were some members of the non-profit that is involved with the art installation there that told us more about it. Walk around and take it all in. You can easily do it in 10-15 minutes and it's a free attraction. Saint Phalle has other artwork in San Diego, but the Magical Circle Garden, is by far the most expansive one in terms of scope. And the most interesting in my book.
