We had a lovely time here. I am a big fan of zoos, and of course an aquarium is just a big, wet zoo. The Mississippi Aquarium was very cute and lots of fun. You can tell that the staff are educated and care very much about the animals. It is all very clean and well-kept. It took us about 2 hours to sidle through and look at everything. It's a good outing for an afternoon. Part of the facility is outdoors, with exhibits for the beavers (They have beavers!! So cute!!), the dolphins, the otters, and the local gators and wildlife. They have a penguin exhibit that is in the works and coming soon. The rest is indoors in a nice building. You go up to the top floor and work your way down through the various exhibits and tanks. A big part is outside, so you should check the weather before you go and be prepared to deal with whatever. There is a public parking garage right next door, but we parked across the highway at Jones Park and walked over to the aquarium. There is a nice pedestrian skybridge over the highway that makes it easy and safe. read more

Cute aquarium. Came here after getting some coffee and as a heads up: you can't bring outside drinks inside the facility! So don't even try it. Got here as it opened, they have a military discount at the ticket office. I enjoyed the outdoor exhibits, but the indoor exhibits are much more expansive and beautifully put together. They have a touch tank and a lot of interesting information posted everywhere, so come prepared to learn. They also have a bird exhibit that you can walkthrough and see animals close up! This is a cute little aquarium. It's not big, but the quality is pretty high. I personally liked this MORE than the aquarium in New Orleans! They have dolphins, otters, beavers, and more! This aquarium offers daily shows and programs with the animals (the dolphin show was awesome!) which are already included with admission. They have a stingray touch pool too, if you wanted to pet a ray! I think the $30 (if you purchase your tickets online a day ahead) admission price is a little high, but still fair since it's a decent aquarium for the area! The cool thing is that this aquarium offers different "encounters" and "experiences". They have a dolphin and a penguin one where you get to meet, pet, and feed them. I wasn't too interested in those, but the one that did interest me was the "SeaTrek Encounter". It was a very unique experience!! I definitely recommend it if you've never tried it before! The "SeaTrek Encounter" is an experience where they provide you with a wet suit, shoes, gloves, and a helmet that continually pumps in oxygen, so you can breathe underwater while you're wearing it. You put it all on and descend a ladder about 10 feet down into the main fish tank (yes, the one with the sharks, rays, fish, and sea turtles!) You just have to be able to climb up and down a ladder, so no swimming required. You stand on a platform and see the fish swim around you. They give you food to feed the fish and you just enjoy your time underwater. Because of the helmet, you just breathe normally the whole time and your head stays dry. You get 15 minutes underwater after the last person of your group makes it down to the platform. Depending on the size of your group, you may get to stay down there for much longer if there are more people and they take their time going up/down the ladder. If you want to stay down there for longer, you should volunteer to be the first person down! I loved this so much and wished my group was bigger, so I could stay a bit longer! Some things that might be of concern to someone who hasn't done this before: The helmet feels a little claustrophobic at first when you put it on above the water, but once your head is below the water, you can see out from it much easier and that feeling goes away. My biggest concern was about not being able to pop my ears. I usually have trouble with pressure in my ears descending in an airplane (my ears hurt!), so I had some trouble with the helmet and descending/ascending the ladder here too, which is to be expected. It's a little hard to pop your ears; however, they teach you how to encourage your ears to pop (which is difficult for me due to narrow Eustachian tubes in my ears), and there is a diver with you the whole time making sure you're okay. I found that if you take your time popping your ears a little bit at a time for each rung of the ladder, you'll be able to get your ears to a comfortable place and you can enjoy the experience without pain. I was worried about my ears, but it was totally fine once I took it slow! If you've never done it before, it might be intimidating, but it was so amazing, it's worth taking the plunge! The "SeaTrek Encounter" is expensive at $90 per person, but to be fair, it also includes general admission, so you get to enjoy the aquarium on top of this special experience. It's like paying $60 for the experience by itself, which in my mind, was definitely worth it! I don't think I could ever scuba dive, but this was a super fun taste of what it's like to be underwater with ocean creatures in a safe and comfortable environment! read more

I just think the price isn't worth it. The main building you walk through is fine but it feels almost incomplete. The aviary is incredibly small, with the walkway being the size of a longer driveway. The portion with the amphibians gives off pet store vibes. We spent an hour going through everything, despite our children slowing us down quite a lot. I sincerely enjoyed our visit to the Mississippi Aquarium! I love aquariums and have been to many - I felt the Mississippi Aquarium was in my top 5 just because it's such a relaxing, enjoyable experience. For a smaller aquarium, they have a nice variety of aquatic life. The exhibits are spread out between several buildings and an outdoor area, which means you can explore without large crowds. Every exhibit was well-kept and it appears they are still continuing to grow and expand the exhibits available. Most fun, many of the tanks were decorated for the holidays! While it's a little pricey, I easily spent 3.5 hours browsing the exhibits and could've spent a little more just watching the big tanks indoors. Worst experience ever and I'm never coming back. On a 95-degree day, when I was dressed for fairly easy access to breastfeed my baby, staff targeted me and dress-coded me because my activewear set showed like an inch of my stomach. No cleavage or anything. They actually marched me to the gift shop and forced me to buy a t-shirt out of my own pocket just to stay there.The hypocrisy is insane because I literally saw another girl walking around in a tube top who didn't get stopped at all. Power tripping over an inch of skin on a nursing mom is disgusting and completely ignores the fact that breastfeeding in public is protected by law.On top of being treated like a criminal for feeding my baby, I already hated that they keep dolphins in tanks here. The awful guest service combined with the dolphin captivity means my family is completely done with this place. Save your money and go somewhere else.(Edit: They did eventually offer to comp my ticket, but only after I had to email them three separate times to get them to care.) read more

We went here on the way to Florida for our vacation. This was such a cute aquarium! There are different experiences that I think are worth it. We met a sweet penguin named William, so worth the experience! My son loved meeting him. The staff were so kind and easy to talk to if we had questions. I would suggest bringing a fan for the little ones and folks who don't handle heat well, or going during a time when it's cooler outside. There are two buildings you can go inside and the rest to see is outside. The food is decent. Family vacation day at the Mississippi Aquarium in Gulfport MS! We haven't been here before as they just opened about 3 years ago. It's a beautiful new complex, with a touch tank containing sting rays, hermit crabs, and a few other animals, a large tank with sharks, a sea turtle, and a walk through tunnel, beavers, eels, and even some dolphins! The aquarium is mostly inside, with some outside exhibits. If you have littles, be aware that the touch tank unfortunately doesn't have any elevated platforms for them to stand on like other aquariums. There also were no handwashing stations, just paper towel dispensers...luckily we had some hand sanitizer with us. Overall it is easily walkable, good paths for strollers and wheelchairs, elevator near the escalator, and convenient bathroom placements. The kid big win for this place: there is a small coloring area towards the end. The kids can color a picture and place it on the scanner, where it will come to life on the video screen! Very cool (I may have done one myself) Nursing moms: there is a lactation space in the family bathroom outside the gift shop! And although I am saying it's "in the family bathroom", it really isn't. There is a separate door between the bathroom area and the beautiful and CLEAN lactation space. read more

While I enjoyed visiting this aquarium, I felt that it was a little steep for what we experienced. For a family of 4 (5 really) - two adults and two children - it was around $120 (we also brought our two year old but we didn't pay for them). When you enter you'll see some beavers on the right, and alligators on the left. Entering the building you immediately go up two floors by escalator. They do have elevators for those who need it! I loved that the first indoor exhibit you see is an interactive touch pool. The first half has quite a few critters, but the star of the show there were the little shrimps. My kids loved it and laughed the whole time the shrimp crawled on their fingers. The second half are sting rays, sharks, and horseshoe crabs. My kids can pet sting rays at our aquarium back home, but they were living for the sharks here. They seem to do a lot of touch-breaks for the animals in the touch pools, and if you enter the exhibit while they're on a break, it may take up to about 15 minutes until you could try again. As you keep going you'll encounter a 360° walk through tunnel. The rest of the aquarium was all one exhibit, just at various spots as you continued around. As you keep going, on the other side of the massive tank, we did see a green moray eel, a zebra shark and a massive grouper. When you get closer to the end, you're at a giant view of the tank and they even have bean bag chairs on the ground for the kiddos to really relax and look at the fish. When you leave the building, you can continue walking and see their otters, dolphins and aviary. My kids got to see a dolphin up close and they were incredibly excited. They mentioned you could add on an experience of petting dolphins, but we chose the other option of petting a penguin as they don't have enough seats for our family for the dolphin experience. Since we had our two year old, we couldn't all do the penguin interaction as the youngest they allow is 5, but my husband took my older two and they loved it. They don't have an actual penguin habitat built yet but we were told it would potentially be ready in 1 to 1.5 years. Overall it's a nice aquarium, but I felt it was lacking compared to other aquariums we frequent. Maybe once the penguin habitat is finished it'll really draw in more folks. read more

We took my grandmother after her assisted living had canceled plans due to a bus issue. We had already bought the tickets and didn't want to waste our money because of no refunds. When we got there, we had to park in the parking garage. My dad and grandmother both (she uses a walker and my disabled father has to walk with Canadian crutches) struggled to get up the hill from the parking garage. Once we got in, we got her a wheel chair but there wasn't many for rent at the time. Inside the building, the floors are downhill and slick- my dad struggled and felt like he may slip and fall. He wasn't the only One with this comment, as others there were talking about how it felt like they were walking on wet slippery flooring. The touch tank was nice- our favorite part was the dolphins. I probably won't visit again for the reasons above, but if that's not an issue to you, you'd probably have fun. ***edited to add- they do have a trolley every 15 minutes but it still is a walk to get to the gate. The lady upfront was giggling when we asked if there was a more accessible way to get to the entrance and just said the trolley but you still have to go up the hill a little ( only asked because my grandmothers assisted living is still going to make the trip at a later date). The employees were nice, the place was clean. If you park in the parking garage for longer than I think two hours, it's $11. A little pricey but I didn't mind read more

The day after Thanksgiving while our wives was out shopping the guys decided to take the kids out to the aquarium for everyones first time. Now this was a place that I really enjoyed as there was an outdoor portion and an indoor. Without having to name every animal we saw we did see a great deal of wildlife including alligators, dolphins, parrots and even an albino shark. The children really enjoyed themselves and I did also. Have you ever looked so forward to something and hyped it up in your head then it just...fell kinda flat? I know I have and this is one of those times. Like I really hurt my own damn feelings about this place. The Mississippi Aquarium is mostly outside. When I think of aquariums I think of a cool, dark, escape the summer heat and sun indoor space. That's not the case here, so if you're looking to escape the sun know that only a few exhibits are indoors. Speaking of indoors, there's really only one large aquarium (it is two, maybe three?) stories tall, but damn it's just not at all what I expected. The touch pool is large but honestly not large enough because getting a spot to try and touch the stingrays was impossible. It just didn't happen for us because there were so many people who would not move, despite having stood there for what seemed like eternity. You have to walk thru the overpriced restaurant to get to some of the outdoor exhibits which I get, they are trying to get you to buy food...but come on. They have a paid parking garage but you're better off finding a spot around the downtown area (free on weekends) and walking a bit further to save some cash. Lord knows the tickets are already expensive enough. Honestly the best aquarium in the area is only a bit of a drive, so if you're looking for a cool, dark indoor one that's worth every penny, go to New Orleans instead. read more

I love aquariums and always get excited when I get to visit a new one. I thought it was so neat to have this one sit right near the ocean! We were spending a day in the Gulfport/Biloxi area, so doing some fun tourist things was on our list. First off, this is a nice aquarium. Apparently it is new, and I can tell... it's really nice. But, being new it has about 20 minutes worth of sights to see. And for that 20 minutes, you have to pay $30.... which is insane to me. After buying our ticket, going through the exhibits, we walked out of the building at the end and thought, 'that's it?' Plus, if you park in their garage, that'll add another bit of bucks onto it. (There was a lot of street parking, thankfully.) For what they have right now, it is really nice. Some of the exhibits are outside, too, which is refreshing. What I really, really loved was getting to see dolphins! This was probably my first time ever seeing some in an aquarium, and it was a really cool experience. If you're okay with paying the large price and are aware of the small amount of things to do, then I'd suggest to go for it. But I'm hoping that in the future they will add more to the aquarium to make the price actually worth it. read more

This is a wonderful Aquarium right off the beach! Huge, easy to find parking garage, delightful entrance staffed by exceptionally hospitable people that made us feel very welcomed in these COVID days! On the way in, I really thought the green crocs weren't real. Finally one moved and so did I. :) The next big exhibit was a multi layered pond of native freshwater fish and a handful of turtles. I could have grabbed a chair, a beer and watched for hours! Inside were some wonderful exhibits with a pond where you could touch some saltwater fish and rays as they swam past. And no, I wasn't one of the swimming Rays being touched. Besides me, don't touch the porcupine fish! The dolphin exhibit was fun to watch those speed demons zip about. This is a well done museum and perfect attraction for this area! Price was well worth it! read more

The Mississippi Aquarium is the newest family attraction on the Gulf Coast. It's located in Gulfport, MS. on Beach Blvd across from Jones Park. Parking is easy due the covered parking lot attached to the aquarium, and there is a fee for parking. Tickets for admission can be purchased in advance online or in person at the entrance. About 60% of this aquarium is outside, so you may want to factor the weather forecast into your visit. There is a cafe located onsite for eats, snacks, or drinks. During our visit we had a Pops Brothers (local vendor) Oreo cheesecake popsicle for $6. It was very good! This aquarium showcases all local wildlife varieties such as alligators, a bird sanctuary, dolphins, otters, and a variety of fish/sharks. These are located on the outside section. The indoor section has you taking and elevator or escalators to the third floor and working your way down back to the bottom floor. You will start off with an interactive touch pad filled with stingrays, sharks, shrimp, hermit crabs, and a variety of fish. The rest of the indoor area is viewing tanks with different fish and turtles. There are biologists and volunteers located at each area ready to assist or answer any questions you may have. The aquarium does have penguins but we were told they were seasonal. I am unsure when they will return. If you have never been to an aquarium before this new but small aquarium would suffice. But considering the cost of $30 per adult plus parking fees, the cost is a little steep compared to the same cost per person New Orleans Aquarium which is an hour drive away. This Aquarium does a great job educating the public on animal conservation. The staff truly love their job and shows, they were very eager to answer questions. At the exit of the Aquarium, you have to walk through the gift shop. In here, they offer stuffed animals, clothing, art decor, etc.... I truly enjoyed my visit, it took my wife and I about 1.5 hours to see it all and were not rushing through it. We inquired about an encounter with the dolphins which hopefully will be offered in the future. Ten of us drove 3 hours to the Aquarium, eight of us were ages 6-23, plus my daughter and myself - admission was $264.00 and it only took us an hour to see everything inside and outside, disappointing. It's a small aquarium so be prepared. I loved the exhibits they did have and did an outstanding job on the exhibits they did have. The air-conditioned building felt brand new with an escalator and pathways leading you around plus the kids liked touching the stingrays. We all enjoyed watching the dolphins swim in their pool outside. The displays were beautifully designed, providing visitors with an up-close and personal view of each species. However, .... having been to Sea World (San Diego and Orlando) and aquariums, perhaps I was expecting more. The bird aviary was small, we walked through in a minute (perhaps I'm used to the San Diego Zoo aviaries which are quite large). I understand a penguin exhibit is coming soon and hopefully more exhibits as well. In summary, residents appreciate an aquarium in Mississippi but be aware that it is a smaller aquarium and the admission price is high for the amount of time you spend there. read more

I would give them 1 star but it is only 2 years old so I'll give 2 stars. Their is only 2 saltwater tanks in the aquarium...many empty hallways that have nothing in them. Hopefully they will eventually add more. They have a few outside exhibits and an aviary (witch is a joke). The coolest things were the touch pool and the out door dolphin habitat. (Huge dolphins). They did say they are putting in a penguin exhibit within a year or so. Their is plenty of room for more exhibits, but currently I felt like it was a waste of time and money. Honestly I have more of a variety in my 75g reef tank. They do not have a single coral tank or jellyfish tank. Also their is no type of behind the scenes information. If I ever go again it will not be for many years. The 2 pictures I posted is everything inside the in door aquarium. The staff was incredibly knowledgeable, friendly, and enthusiastic. Before I could ask a question, there was someone right there to answer. A beautiful, clean location right off the beach where there is plenty of free parking if you do not want to use the shaded paid parking that is available. It is true that there's only one huge tank inside the aquarium, but you can view it from 3 levels and the design is very thoughtfully done. The touch pool had more varieties of fish than I generally see at aquariums. The aviary is a cool addition. I saw a review here concerning seating... I saw benches on every level indoors and out. I feel this place was very kid friendly - lots of little crawl spaces for them to explore. I am 29 and my partner is 30. We had a lovely little afternoon date here and caught a spectacular sunset when we left. We got to see the dolphin training experience at 4:00, and I welled up with tears of happiness. It made every penny well worth it! I'm sure the other interactive experiences are equally as fun to see. I look forward to seeing growth at this aquarium in the future. I think it is a great place to spend your money, support marine life and biologists, and have some fun. This place was a lot of fun! We were in the area for college visits, and since marine biology is something I'm interested in studying in college we thought we could stop by here (and be "we thought" I mean I nagged repeatedly until my parents agreed). Be forewarned that it is pretty small, but what there is is very pretty and fun. There is an inside area where you can pet stingrays and other similar animals, and going down is a massive fish tank. You can walk through a tunnel through the fish tank, and there are countless windows from different angles. Not bad for a small town and a new aquarium just getting started. They charge the high dollar prices of bigger aquariums but offer little aquarium scenery. Went to go see the dolphins and you hardly could see them because they trainers were standing out on the deck and the dolphins stayed by them. I think they are off to a good start and will grow and do better in time. Very new and young aquarium. read more

It was fun for the children and mildly good for adults. Was pricey for what they had, we thought. Over $300 for 8 adults, 2 seniors and 2 kids. It was disappointing that one of the buildings was closed for renovations also. All in all we are glad we went but will not go again. read more
