I have had my hair cut here twice by Eric, and Tori did my hair for my wedding earlier this month. I can't say enough good things about Mitchell John Salon. When I first went in, Eric listened to my concerns and took into account that I don't spend a ton of time styling my hair, and I also tend to go anywhere from 5-8 months between cuts. Yes, months. Had a groupon and went to Kristen for a blow-out. They give the lowest level stylist for the groupon. I warned her that my hair was thick and not the average stylist could straighten my hair, though when professionally done, it straigthens beautifully and has tremendous volume. She said she trained on "ethnic" hair-- whatever that means. The blow dry was poofy with kinks and when I asked her to put a flat iron through it because it had kinks and was poofy, she said that'll will cost you more. The blow-out in its mediocre form lasted only a day, whereas a professionally done blow out lasts me at least three. I would advise the salon that if you want to attract and keep new clientele by using the groupon, it's probably best not to stick us with the lowest level stylists you have. read more

I'm the wet-hair-don't-care girl at work - I can't be bothered to use a blow dryer in the morning so Monday-Friday between the hours of 9-11 am my head slowly transitions from damp to dry. When I visited Mitchell John Salon it had been nine months since my last cut; shameful, I know. The storefront is clean and brightly lit, with seating by the door and places to hang your coat. I was offered the choice of a robe or a cape to cover my shoulders, which was a nice touch. After a few minutes my assigned stylist, Eric, introduced himself. He very thoroughly discussed what I was looking for in terms of length and cut, what my styling habits are, and what products I use. Once he had a good idea of what I wanted, he gave me a great shampoo with a mini head massage and led me to the chair. While Eric trimmed and curled my hair he explained each step and Living Proof product he used, all the while maintaining pleasant conversation. He offered tips on keeping my fine hair de-greased, and let me know that touch-ups were available between appointments, free of charge. I left with a beautiful, low-maintenance haircut that looked great the next day -- and is still making me happy one week later. However, in less than an hour, Kim had tamed most of the fly-aways and sent me home with a prescription of Living Proof products and the world's greatest round brush guaranteed to keep my hair salon perfect if only I would find the strength to kick my addiction to hair ties. I headed to Mitchell John after I saw the Living Social Deal, and read the great reviews. I had been going to another salon, but was hoping to find a place closer to my job, so thought I would give it a shot. The salon is a gorgeous loft with exposed beams and bricks. The receptionist was polite, and asked me to sit and wait for the stylist. I then waited for 35 minutes for my stylist, Gina, to come get me. She was quite apologetic about it, but it was frustrating because I had plans that night right after the appointment. Gina was really nice and fun. I showed her a picture of what I wanted, not far off from what I already had. She did a nice job, and made styling recommendations. The cut and blow dry took a little longer then I was used too, but it came out well. She filled out a form of what products she used, and marked down a follow up appointment for 6 weeks away to bring to the receptionist upon checkout. The receptionist tried to get me to book my follow up appointment on the spot, and to purchase the products used. Six weeks is much sooner then I would come back, and I didn't need any products so I declined. I felt her approach was a little pushy, honestly. Overall, the salon was nice, and my haircut was nice, but nothing amazing. I've had better cuts elsewhere. Seems like other people liked it a lot though, so could be worth the trip. read more

Now that I have left Boston I can share my most favorite stylist ever! Jahna is great, I first went in for a blowdry, and walked out feeling super pretty. This gave me the confidence to not only let her cut my hair, but also to let her give me layers and bangs. Until then, I always had a straight cut due to trauma from haircuts. I explained I was after a Lindsay Lohan cut and she knew exactly what I meant, a bit of volume, some layers, and the sexy rolled out of bed look. What I love about her is she doesn't shortcut by using a flat iron on my hair. She actually uses a round brush, which gives me the fullness and body I want. Since moving I have been to 4 different salons/stylists, Jahna is the only person who has ever had me walk out happy each time. And she's relatively cheap to boot! read more

Despite the great rating on Yelp, it was a totally disappointing experience. The 5:30pm appointment turned into 6pm and the girl doing my hair was extremely distracted by another customer (she kept giving directions to another employee to help them do their hair). She kept on apologizing and the end result was that my hair was suboptimal. The details: I had a livingsocial deal and I got my hair cut by Jahna. I didn't have to wait long for her to come out and she was warm and professional. I felt like she really took the time to understand what kind of haircut I wanted. She showed me beforehand on the back of my head how much she would be cutting off and that really helped me to not sit there nervously the whole time thinking maybe I didn't explain it clearly enough. Also she was chatty but not too chatty. When we weren't talking there was a comfortable silence, which I like. Sometimes you just want to sit there and zone out. Oh, and the lighting in there doesn't make you look horrible while you're sitting in the chair. You know when you're sitting there with your wet hair plastered to your head like a wet dog and there's nothing you can do but stare at your own harshly-lighted face in the mirror for half an hour wondering if you might be ugly and just never realized it until now? Inez! Oh my God, Inez is amazing. If you have curly hair, go see her immediately. She is a miracle worker. She took my damaged, weirdly shaped hair, and made it gorgeous and perfect. Seriously, if she could make my hair look great, she can make anyone's look amazing. More details: I moved to Cambridge two-plus years ago and had a horrible time finding someone who could cut curly hair well; my hair had started to turn into this weird, bad shape. Like, a bob (a too-short bob), with curls hanging out the ends. Seriously not good. I kept trying people--touted as great with curly hair--but no one could fix it. Each one made it worse than the next. (Curly-haired girls, no matter what anyone tells you, avoid Salon Luna like the plague!) Then, catastrophe struck: I was being photographed for a magazine and the stylist decided to bleach the ends of my hair. This was a French magazine and no English was spoken on the set, so I just went along with things, thinking, "they're French! They know what they're doing!" End result: The bleach destroyed the ends of my hair. Big hunks broke off. And what didn't break off refused to curl. I looked insane and resorted to wearing a ballet bun every day. Finally, I consulted with my old colorist in New York, who said, "You need a major haircut." And so I began my research--who was the best curly-haired stylist in Boston?--and settled on Inez. I was so nervous that I went in for a consult before booking an appointment for a cut. Inez completely soothed my nerves. "We can fix this," she said. "You'll barely even notice the loss in length. We'll reshape it and it will look beautiful." And she was right. Her cutting style is unusual: She straightens your hair before she cuts it. With a flatiron. And I'll confess I was a bit nervous, at first. But she said, "I know exactly where the curls will fall after the cut. I know exactly how much it will curl up." And she did. She seriously did. I left with my hair straight. The next day, I washed it, and the layers fell perfectly and beautifully. My husband, who likes my hair long, and was worried about my cutting it, actually did a double-take, then said, "YOUR HAIR LOOKS SO GOOD!" So, in short, you should see Inez. I feel certain she can do anything, cut any type of hair. She's also sweet, nice, funny, a pleasure to spend an afternoon with. After a horrific experience at the Bellagio in Brighton, I was in need of a great haircut and a plan to get my hair back because quite frankly my hair rocks. Saige (see below!) told me to go to Mitchell John's and see Ja'Cole. I, of course, did so immediately. The salon is located right in Downtown and it's very clean/modern. Everyone's super nice and helpful, no "I'm better than you" attitudes like you get on Newbury. I sat down with Ja'Cole and told her my horror story. She was pretty blunt and didn't hide the fact that yes, my hair (bangs, layers and all) were quite the mess HOWEVER she was excited for this first cut and had a plan to get my hair back to how I wanted it. It's a dry haircut.. so that was odd. Then a nice head massage and shampoo followed by tying up loose ends and a style. Just wow - I LOVE IT! Words can't even describe how much I love my haircut. I was really nervous to get my hair trimmed after having recently getting most of my hair cut off accidentally at a different salon. I needed a trim and to get my bangs re done and Janet was more than accomodating. She helped me figure out what kind of bangs I wanted to do and removed hardly any of the length. As someone who is usually really wary about getting her haircut, Janet was super understanding and really listened to me and gave me exactly what I wanted. I had a fantastic experience here getting my hair cut by Meghan. Since my hairline has started receding, I've never really been able to know what to do with my hair - Meghan looked at it, and quickly surmised what to do to keep me from looking as old and unhip as my now thin pate will permit. She washed, cut, & rinsed my hair (to avoid having hair all over me all day from the cut), then used a thickening cream which is the only product I've ever really liked the look of in my hair - gives it a bit of texture. Was in the neighborhood on Friday and decided to pop into the Mitchell John salon to see if they could accommodate a walk-in blow-dry. It was super busy in there, so I was surprised when they told me they could. Was ushered upstairs by my stylist, Kristen, and had the most enjoyable 45 minutes of my week as she transformed my nasty, curly, ponytail into a swinging and shiny head of hair. They use a special product there that was actually developed by the owner, and it made all the difference. It was weightless and effective. I rocked that blow-dry ALL WEEKEND. I recently purchased a Gilt City voucher for makeup application and blow out. It was a bargain price and since I had engagement photo shoot coming up, i decided this was a great way to get my hair and makeup done for it. The day before I get a call from John who tells me that the person who would be doing my makeup would not be working and thus I had to reschedule. I panicked and said I could not since I specifically made the appointment for my engagement shoot. We tried to work out different times but it kind of conflicted with the planning of my day already. Thank Goodness I was at the gym while he called. I left off some steam to think what else I could do and then John called me back again and said he would have someone else come in during the morning if I didn't mind coming in earlier than I had been schedule for. I took it. What a relief! I wish I could remember the girl that did my makeup, she did a fabulous job and it really showed in my pictures. My face was flawless. Gina did my blowout and she is a doll. I would definitely recommend her and see her again for a blow out. Despite how windy it was that Saturday when I had my shoot, my hair lasted. This place was recommend to me by my roommate. She saw Ja'Cole who she loved but sadly didn't have any open appointments in the short window I was working with. So I asked for a comparable stylist and was set up with Eric, a "brand new" stylist of theirs. Ok great, Eric was very nice and did a beautiful job with my hair. BUT when I went I pay I found out it was $150 for JUST a cut since he was a "master stylist". When setting up my appointment all the receptionist said was "new" stylist, so I wasn't prepared for that kind of price tag for just a cut. Great alternative to Newbury Street if you work downtown and in dire need for a haircut. I've had some pretty good haircuts - they're definitely not as good as from my regular stylist - but again, worth it. And they're very reasonably priced, I think when I started going there it only cost $30! Same price that you might find at Dellaria or Leeba or other chains in the area, but much better service and outcome. Since then, the prices have gone up, but not by much. I have been going to Mitchell John salon for a little over a year now. Love the ambiance of the place and the staff is always so helpful and nice. I go to Meghan and I always leave there happy and looking way better than I did walking in to the salon. When you describe the color you want to her it's like she can read your mind. She is a true artist and always gives me a great cut/color and product recommendations to keep my hair healthy and looking good. I saw Paige for a men's haircut after she won the Best of Boston for Men's Haircut from the Improper Bostonian. I must say it was the best haircut I have had for over 5 years. I was always told that I shouldn't cut my hair too short, but Paige put that to rest. She gave me the messy look I was looking for for years. They recommended Meghan and I am sooooo happy with the cut and color I got yesterday. She was super nice and friendly and helpful with advice on how to cut and color baded on what I wanted. She also chatted with me and I am not usually the talker. So glad I stuck with the salon. Its not overly expensive for the quality and service and location. Also their living proof products are life savers when it comes to avoiding bad hair days. I went in last Friday for a trim and a blowout. Katy is a miracle worker!! My hair (fine, but TONS of it) can never decide if it wants to be curly, bendy, wavy, flat or just plain icky. Katy always coaxes my strands into silky, smooth, shiny and beautiful hair. When I say just a trim, she only takes a small amount off. I read about Mitchell John Salon on a local blog and decided to try them out as I had a 20% off code. I called and they were able to take me the next day so that was good! I had a hard time finding it (even though I live on Beacon Hill and it's just in the Financial District) but now that I know exactly where I'm going it shouldn't be too much of an issue. Still, I was a few minutes late and I think the guy at the desk was unimpressed with me. So, I was a little nervous. But my stylist was super sweet and welcoming. It's a cool space (kind of an industrial feel) but I was the only woman getting my hair done. It was around lunch time so I guess all the businessmen run in here for their hair cuts. I explained what I wanted (low lights with a couple highlights mixed in) and was super impressed with their "hair painting" technique. They don't use foil- they literally paint the color onto your hair. And my strawberry blonde has never looked better! I really liked it here. I'll probably be back whenever I need color touchup because their process is just amazing but I don't think I'd come for other services. I know they had squeezed me in last minute but it always turns me off when the stylist hands me off to an assistant for shampoo or styling ESPECIALLY at the price I was charged. Even with the 20% off, I was a bit floored when I heard the total. So next time, no cut or blow out, just color. read more

I work right around the corner so I popped in during my lunch break for a trim and a blow dry prior to having my engagement photos taken. Tori was the stylist I saw. I love having long hair and am currently growing it out for my wedding. Whenever I go to a salon and ask for a trim, they always seem to get scissor happy and take it way too far and I leave with 4 inches gone and have to start over with growing it out. Tori listened to what I wanted, suggested a few layers to lighten my thick, curly hair, and gave me a great trim! It was the first time that I think a trim has actually been JUST a trim!
