Pretty good sushi, fresh ingredients. Okay service (the first time was much better than the second - our waitress was quite indifferent). I was a bit disappointed that the one roll was I was excited about they came back and told me I couldn't get it because they were out of apples. I got the Boston instead and it was a little disappointing - mostly lettuce, very little fish. The first trip was a much better experience. Pretty tasty miso soup and very fresh sashimi (I love the salmon.) It was a bit pricey, but not terrible. And it is in a good spot - as far as it is nice to have a sushi restaurant amidst the shopping and such in Alabaster. It might not be an area where I would choose to go have a romantic dinner, but they do a pretty good job of making it relaxing on the inside to help you forget that you are in a strip mall. Just went out to eat last weekend. No social distancing at all. It was so packed that we ended up sitting at the bar to avoid being around so many people. So so so good!! Must is one of our favorite spots for a date night! I always get shrimp, chicken, and filet mignon and it's always perfectly cooked. Every time I order a margarita, it's super strong and tasty. The price is a reasonable considering how much food you get. It seems like a very family friendly place and it's conveniently located in the alabaster shopping center, next to the Amstar theater. Even with having to deal with less occupancy due to COVID-19 restrictions, you can really tell they're going above and beyond to show their true appreciation for the customers during this difficult time. read more

Sorry to say this was one of my go tos close by but this last visit was a disappointment. It seems as though the food was of a lesser quality and came at a higher price. My hibachi filet was a huge disappointment compared to before and my noodles seemed to be mushy and overcooked. They brought a replacement for the noodles but it was identical to the first, simply inedible. We also had sushi - the quality, presentation and freshness was just not there. If it wasnt for sitting at the sushi bar and basically giving the shushi chef our order and having him to get the servers attention by flagging her down from the host stand where she was chit chatting ut up.. again the sushi guy was amazing, this is the only reason why I agree to come here and it's the only place in alabaster that serve sushi. read more

It's a nice place with good decor and atmosphere. Little smaller than the hibachi places I've been in but still a good set up. The chefs are professional and definitely entertaining. The food was pretty good but there wasn't anything that was a wow factor. Good sized portions for the food, of course with the price it better be. Not overly expensive but definitely not cheap. Of course, you are also paying for entertainment during cooking. The shrimp was overcooked but the scallops were perfect. The service was a little inconsistent as we were given the bill for the family next to us and vice versa. It took about 15 minutes to fix the problem for both myself and the father of the family. They need to improve on service and consistency. Attention to detail is everything when it comes to giving someone their bill. I will be returning and hoping for better service. Great service, lovely atmosphere and food that needs some work. The ginger salad dressing was very good. It's a bit creamier and sweeter than some of the other places around town. The soup was good but I felt a little cheated getting canned fried onions on top rather than a garnish of house made noodles, mushrooms, etc. The teppanyaki portion of the meal was overall good but nothing special. The vegetables, rice and noodles were nicely seasoned and cooked spot on. The proteins, were sadly a different story. We specified that our steaks be cooked very rare and it was painfully obvious the chef had no idea how to cook to that temperature. He seared the steaks far too long before cutting and seasoning. I even told him that they were past done, asked him to remove my steak and he insisted on cooking them for easily another 2 minutes. Our very rare steaks ended up being medium well, dry and not worth eating. The scallops were nicely cooked but were gritty and hand't been cleaned properly by the kitchen. The food itself was great however the service is subpar. I used to eat here frequently because I work nearby but every time I would visit I'd be insulted or ostracized. I asked for a brown paper bag instead of a plastic one (they carry both) because my previous to-go order had ripped through and wasted before I made it to my car but the boy who works the bar insisted that they were sturdy. Today I dined in and asked for a to-go box and requested a brown paper bag (again). The waitress was nice and said she'd get me one but then I heard the boy who works the bar say "she doesn't need a damn paper bag" it was a total turn off. I will not be dining there again. I called to place a to-go order and the woman who answered sounded like she did not want to take my order then told me that I had to pay over the phone which I have never had to do in the 5+ years I have been a customer here. My wife then called down there to try and place and order and she called 6 times with no answer just a "this mailbox is full" message. This has become a more prevalent problem here in the past year or so. We have been very loyal customers to this business for probably 10 years but have now found that they are lacking very greatly in the customer service department. Just read Sherrie P's review from 2/11/2012... it'll save me from writing a book. Sherrie pretty much explains how my husband and I feel about Mizu. We won't go to any other Japanese steak house for hibachi service. You get a lot more for the same price as those "other" guys. The filet mignon is better than any steak house in town and the shrimp is usually as fresh as seafood you'd get at a restaurant beachside in PCB. Presentation was fantastic but the fish tasted subpar. The sushi was also warmer than room temperature, which potentiated the fishy taste. I'm hoping I went inbetween fresh deliveries because I wanted to like this rrestaurant . Prices were average, I ordered the sushi and sashimi combo for $24. Comes with miso soup and salad. The salad was the same as any other sushi bar but the soup seemed like a light version of a good miso soup. read more

Random stop here one night with my hubby. I love hibachi so I was excited for this meal. Great service, atmosphere and presentation. Food is more than plenty. If not starving you could even split a dinner with someone. Salad and ginger dressing is average but still good. Egg drop soup is always a highlight. I usually get chicken dinner but decided to go with the scallops this time. Was a little disappointed to find a couple of my scallops had pieces of shell on them which I didn't know until I bit into them and the initial crunch caught me by surprise. Other than that, they were cooked to perfection. You get a super large serving of fried rice and noodles or prior to cooking, you can request double rice or noodles if you don't want both. We always go home with to go boxes with so much food leftover. Of course its hibachi so expect to sit at a large table with complete strangers if you have never been. They do have a dine in option as well if you don't want the whole presentation and just want to chill with your company. Great food and service, will be back! read more

Mizu Japanese Steakhouse is one of my favorite lunch destinations because of the food and the affordability. However, be forewarned that it is not a light lunch. Guests have the choice between the traditional hibachi grill experience or a dining room. For the sake of timeliness, we always eat in the dining room. The lunch menu is a scaled down version of the dinner menu. My favorite is Hibachi Chicken. It comes with fried rice, noodle and vegetables. In addition, guests have the choice between either miso soup or a ginger salad. The portions are always filling. Depending on the choice of your protein plates range from $7.95 to $12.95. It is a bargain for what you get. I highly recommend this place for lunch. read more

I know this is long, but you have to know why out of the thousands of stinking hibachi places there are that this one will forever be my favorite, for now ;) Sooooo, I have been to Mizu several times now and after last night decided it was time to finally review it. Let me start by saying that when we asked my 4 year old where he would like to eat (dinner last night was his choice as a reward for something) he responded "the fire place". I was a little suprised he didn't say Chuckie Cheese, or McDonald's, or Chick- fil- a, or mexican, but nonetheless more than happy to oblige him :) Also, I have eaten at many different hibachi places all over the US. But this one stands out. The atmosphere here is very nice, you enter over a little wooden bridge with a small fishpond and water feature. My 2 year old loves the waving cat figure situated on the bar. The staff has always seated us promptly, rather we sit at a cooking table or regular table. (I've only sat at a regular table once and that's cause my sis and I were only getting sushi and the sushi bar was full, good sign. She's from "out west" and knows her sushi and was HIGHLY pleased with our sushi that day). Once seated they take your drink order. I've had a few cocktails here and they have been nice and strong, but normally I just get water with lemon. As in most hibachi resturants you get a broth soup and some bag-o-salad with ginger dressing. The soup here is really very tasty and I can't quite put my finger on why, maybe it's the perfect balance of salt; not too salty, not at all bland. Maybe it's the little crispy fried onion things at the bottom of the bowl. Whatever it is, it's very good and last night the above mentioned 4 year old ate his bowl and his daddy's. The salad...well like I said it's a salad from a bag, they do add tomato and cucumber slices and it's always been fresh and crisp. The ginger dressing is really, really good, BUT the salad is literally swimming in it, like you could drink the dressing after the salad was gone, like my 2 year old tries to eat it with the kids chopsticks and is bathing in it, like dude where's my lettuce, swimming, so you might want to order it on the side if you're not a dressing person. I personally enjoy drinking it. Last night we also got the squid salad and it was very tasty; sweet and tangy with a very heaping amount of squid. The menu is pretty predictable, however, what you can't possibly predict the first time you go is the enormous amount of food you are going to be served. My boys are big eaters and they get the childs terriyaki chicken and we add $5 to make it a "share plate" (totals 10.95 for their dinner which is great!) You get rice AND noodles with the meat you choose and the vegetables.My husband is a big eater as well. We always go home with atleast 2 boxes and eat on it for days. I think my favorite is the scallops. Heavens to Betsy! The scallops and the shrimp (everyone gets two pieces as part of their meal, party bonus!) are HUGE, beachside fresh, and cooked to perfection everytime. I've been told by several people that seafood is brought fresh from the gulf (about 5 hours away) on a daily basis, which is why it's so fresh. The sushi is amazingly fresh as well. Now I'm a traditionalist when it comes to sushi, I actually eat sashimi more often than not, and it is fresh here. I do enjoy some of the more creative rolls now and then and they haven't dissapointed me at Mizu. The only more fresh tasting sushi I have had was in Norfolk, VA at a sushi resturant by the water. We have always had really good cooks. The show is your typical hibachi show but somehow the cooks here make it very interesting and they are always wonderful with my kids. I love the consistancy I have seen here. So anyway, go give Mizu a try if your in the mood for hibachi, I doubt you will be disappointed! read more

Verry rude server so we where in a group of 4 2 kids and 2 adults the server comes up to us to get our drink order and one of the adults jokingly said 2 beers for the kids instead of the server laughing he said " Are you fu**ing serious? and we said 'what"? and he said it again and then he said "Dont fu** with me" to 2 boys everyone left and ate at the mexican resteraunt next door never going back again and when we confronted the server he acted like he didnt speak english even though he was the server do not eat here read more

I visited this restaurant for the first time in years this week. It was lunch time and we had a decent sized group. Everyone ordered from the hibachi grill. Our chef was very entertaining and the waitress kept our drinks full even though my family can go through some diet coke. My hibachi scallops were cooked perfectly and really hit the spot. I thought the prices and portions were great for a nice lunch out. I will not forget about this place in the future, I fully intend to go back soon! read more

My husband and I came here for our one year anniversary. They had just reopened from closing for lunch so there wasn't many people which should mean prompt service. We came to sit at the hibachi and they didn't put us at one with people already there, because it was "closed". So we were by ourselves which was fine, but then the hibachi chef went over to that table and started cooking so it wasn't "closed". I still don't know why. So we end up sitting there for 20 minutes waiting for our chef. After 20 minutes the snobby hostess came over to ask us if we could move down to make room for 5 people (there was room without us moving) we already had drinks and our salad and soup and had to move. We had to wait on the other people or order, and by then we were starving so we just moved to a table. No one apologized for this inconvenience or even seem to care. There was even a full bus cart with dirty dishes by the host stand that stunk up the entrance. Thankfully the food was good and it made up for the horrible customer service experience, but not sure if we'll be back. read more

This place is infested with roaches! Roaches were crawling all over the walls and out from underneath baseboards. Management is fully aware. They know they have a problem and continue to operate. One of the servers snatched a napkin from my wife's hand to smash a roach on the wall. They've reportedly been dealing with this situation for a while according to management. Apparently ineffectively. They weren't even apologetic. Several employees were just rude. They acted like we were crazy for being grossed out by this disgusting unsanitary environment. I would not recommend going here for any reason. We attempted to reach out to the health department today. We did not get anyone today but we will be calling back. The infestation could be a result of bacteria, sanitation issues, improper food storage or any number of reasons. Their lack of vigilance in taking care of this situation means the restaurant is unfit to operate. There's no telling where the roaches go when the place is closed and the lights go out. I highly doubt they're adequately sanitizing everything. They most certainly didn't when we were there. This place is absolutely disgusting and we will not go back. This is one of wife and son's go to mommy son date spot. They have very reasonable sushi lunch specials. The quality is a step up from hibachi buffet style sushi. Not the best. I'm personally not the biggest hibachi fan. My wife and son loooove this type of place. On occasion I cave and go with. The service is prompt and friendly. The establishment appears clean. There are considerably better hibachi restaurants in Birmingham. The only competition for this place within a 5 mile radius is a buffet style hibachi in Pelham off 31. It's smaller than your average restaurant of this type; however, it is in a strip mall and they've made the best of the space they had to work with, complete with a small coy pond and all of the typical decor. It's definitely entertaining for the kids and the chefs do a good job catering to them. read more

I've been eating Japanese food for years and love it. This place is by far my less favorite place to go eat Japanese. I love ginger dressing but theirs taste like mayo based yumyum sauce instead. I had to add the ginger sauce to make it actually taste like ginger. Stix, Sumo or Yuki's are much better choice place to eat. read more
