    Yummy Italian ice. Kid's size.
    Michele R.

A sweet find in this recently opened (March 2023) honest to goodness REAL Italian ice shop! My Sicilian heritage, Brooklyn born and raised hubby has been missing real Italian ice since we moved away from NY area and now he is a happy guy to have found it here. Me too! Delightful interior where pride of ownership sparkles. Charming, friendly owners in husband (Mike) and wife (Julie), the MJ of the name who found their way to Boise from Spokane via Kentucky. SWEET EATS: We have been in a couple of times to try different flavors of ices and these are the real-deal-texture for Italian ice. They have lemon, of course, and it is dee-licious but they have maybe another dozen'ish (rotating?) flavors too and all made on site. Each one we have tried has been yummy, like peaches and cream and also root beer. Several sizes available with the kids size ($2.99) being ample serving for us. Also on the menu sweet treats like Dole Whips and frozen custard in cones or cups and frozen drinks which have an option of being topped with the frozen custard and it is an option with the Italian ice too or ice and custard can be blended together (called cold fusion, I think). Several kinds of specialty sodas, too, in sizes from 16 oz to 44 oz. We're not so much beverage drinkers but our goal is to come back often and work our way through all the flavors of the Italian ice and frozen custard creations too. JAVA NOTE: One thing they do not offer here is coffee. We were in one day when a woman came in specifically looking for coffee service. This is an ice and frozen sweets shop not a coffee place. Plan accordingly. SPARKLING INTERIOR: Once home to the now defunct Sweet Valley Cookie Co., the owners have painted and freshened up the once dark space. Light and bright in front with windows in that seating area and in the large back room, now with fun wall art I think Julie did herself, you'll find lots more tables and even one that is "pint sized" for little ones. So spiffy clean everywhere too. WORTH-THE-TRIP LOCATION: The only hitch in this giddyeup may be one has to know this is here to know it is here. It is a destination location not a walking through the neighborhood location. (As bookmark, The Lift (Bar and Grill) is immediate neighbor on the same side of W. State Street at the corner of W. State and Lander.) It is worth the trip to discover it! PARKING: Private lot. If you miss the turn into it off of State Street, you can turn on the next side street, W. Lander, and enter the lot from the back. ACCESSIBILITY: ADA marked parking in the back lot with sidewalk access into the building. All on one floor. Ample floor space throughout. Standard height, accessible, table seating. Loo is accessible. PS: No outdoor seating. A DRIVE THROUGH WINDOW!: I didn't see it at first so fyi it is there. It parallels the front of the building on State Street.

I LOVE ITALIAN ICE, and let me tell you this coconut cream ice texture is a smash of ice cream and Italian ice and it's AMAZING! Unfortunately I was just passing through Boise, if I was a local, I would be here weekly.

I heard about this place and don't live anywhere near. Was driving by and decided to stop. Got a cold fusion ice with dole whip on top. It was amazing... will definitely be back.

Our new favorite treat in Boise! We ordered the Italian ice with custard on the bottom & top (I forgot the exact name) and it was delicious! Staff was friendly and explained the menu. The inside was clean and welcoming. Can't wait to get back!

MJ's is such a cute place! They have a wonderful selection of treats to pick from as well. I wanted one of everything! They were helped me decide what to order, which was a layered dole whip (yes they have dole whip) and tigers blood Italian ice! It was amazing! I'll be back and next time I'll bring friends! (Oh! Did I mention they have a drive-thru?) So fast and convenient as well as a cute indoor seating area! Welcome to Boise, MJ's!

How about more than 3 flavors, two of which are chocolate and vanilla?! It shouldn't be called a custard cafe with 3 flavors.

I was actually supposed to meet my nephew at the new location in Eagle. It's actually closer to us but my sweet nephew got confused and headed down to the downtown location. No problem, I made my way downtown to meet my baby for some aunty/nephew time. It's been a few months since I have been in. The shop is a cute as ever. Merch is now available. The pink t shirt they have available was calling my name! It's the perfect shade of pink and sooooo soft. I will have to come back and really check out the merch. My nephew had already been waiting for me to arrive. He's ready for his ice cream! I noticed that they had pistachio as a flavor at the Eagle location. Kinda bummed that it wasn't available here but sweet cream and chocolate will always be a winning combo here. So today I grabbed a kiddie swirl. My nephew grabbed the medium cup with sweet cream, cherry sauce and brownies. Our ice cream was fantastic. My nephew polished off his big cup. Not gonna lie, all the extras he added made his cup look sooooooo good! I as well polished off mine. Can't leave any behind. We got to hang out with the other customers that were enjoying their treats. It makes me heart so happy seeing all these folks come and support a small local business. It's the best! I am going on another ice cream date with my neice next week. Looking forward to checking out the new venue with her. Still happy that my nephew and I got to come here today to enjoy our sweet treat. Great minds think alike. There was a group of 15 or so ahead of us. Two girls decided to cut in front of us and then a few folks behind us as well. Having ice cream at the same time was in everyone's minds today! I believe it was a fantastic idea for all of us. As amazing as this idea was, it was a grip of people with only one person working. Having one person working at an ice cream shop alone during the summer doesn't seem ideal. The poor kid had a lot to handle by himself, but he was handling business. He smashed out a handfull of shakes and double scoops in waffle cones to get the big party taken care of. I applaud him for being so quick and the way he hustled. He then got the two line cutters taken care of. It was finally our turn. My husband got a scoop of cookie dough in a dipped waffle cone. I got a mini dipped cone with the chocolate peanut butter ice cream. The ice cream was great. The flavors were there. It was creamy and rich. I had huge chunks of peanut butter. My husband had plenty of cookie dough and chocolate chips in his ice cream. But, it was basically melting as soon as we got it. My initial scoop actually fell off my cone cause it was so soft. My husband rushed outside to eat his cause it was melting all over his cone and dripping. I got my fresh scoop and had to wolf it down cause of how soft it was, it was melting faster than I could eat it. It sucks having to eat ice cream that fast, you're not able to enjoy your treat. That's the whole point isn't it, to savor your food? To be in moment. The young man that was working tonight did a great job standing on business and getting it done. I love that this shop is right by our house but life takes over sometimes not allowing us to come more often. The one day we decided to come in and we couldn't enjoy our ice cream without having it melted all over our hands and dripping all over the ground. I really wanted to have a relaxing moment with my husband at Stella's today but that didn't quite happen. It was chaos trying to eat our cones super fast. Hopefully the next time around, the ice cream will be harder and more people will be working. Having ice cream the way we did today was three best.

You can feel a nice breeze going through the dining area. It was a little chilly but I'm looking forward to when it's a little warmer out sitting in the same spot. For dinner we ordered a bunch of fun things. My husband grabbed the McCafferty sandwich and a raspberry/blackberrymilkshake. I got some mozzarella sticks, a homemade corndog and a cherry lemonade. I enjoyed the batter on the mozzarella sticks and corndog. It was night and airy! The cheese pull on the mozzarella sticks was great! My corndog was fried to perfection. I loved that the cherry lemonade had pieces of cherry in it. It wasn't grenadine syrup that most places use. I did have a little of the shake. It was so good! It was great to see other people out enjoying their food like we did. Looking forward to our future visit to Big Bun.

I had really wanted to get something boozy and vegan, but they only had one flavor on at the moment that fit the bill and I wasn't particularly interested, so I sampled a few of the dairy boozy flavors and went with a vegan non-boozy ice cream for my actual order because a full scoop of dairy ice cream does not sit right in my stomach. I liked the boozy flavors more but that was only because of the flavors offered - the vegan ice cream itself was great, very smooth and creamy, not overly sugary. I got the float season vegan ice cream: blackberry ice cream with salted dark chocolate. I did still enjoy this flavor a lot. I really liked the crunchy bittersweet dark chocolate bits. I didn't get anything to drink but I was kind of tempted. The ice cream + beer or wine flights looked interesting. I don't know wine well enough to comment, but it looked like they had a good selection of beer with quality brewers and a good variety of beer types. This is technically a Warehouse Food Hall vendor but it's only accessible from the street outside the food hall. So how does Mala House fare? Honestly, not bad. Of the spots I've tried in Boise so far, this is probably one of the more authentic options, at least for hot pot, and it's pretty good overall. They offer three broths: a tomato based broth, a Szechuan broth, and a chicken broth. All three were good, but the Szechuan was the best one. It had great depth of flavor and that classic numbing heat. If you enjoy mala, this one does the job. The hot pot ingredients are a bit limited, but they cover the basics. Things like lobster balls, beef balls, thinly sliced meats, quail eggs, and a variety of vegetables. You can also build your own dipping sauce, which is always nice. Their à la carte items didn't impress me as much though. I'll need to try more of the menu to be fair, but for now, I'd say stick with the hot pot if it's your first time. Service was great. Our server was friendly. It also wasn't very busy the times I've been, which made for a quiet and relaxed experience. With our team wanting an authentic meal experience, we headed over to Mala House. Full Disclosure: We are not Hot Pot folks, which could have been the the issue with our experience. The menu is extensive and there are a variety of meals to choose from but we decided on the following plates. Spicy Garlic Eggplant Stir Fry with Chicken Orange Chicken While the dishes may seem pedestrian, we were expecting elevated flavors and taste and for the exception of the Spicy Garlic Eggplant, the other two dishes were very underwhelming. We discovered that nothing comes with these dishes. They are plates of exactly what you order - The Spicy Garlic Eggplant did come with a small bowl of sticky white rice and while it was very good, the other two plates were very remeniscant of an American-Asian Buffet in San Diego in the 1990s. I had the pleasure and opportunity to visit China last year and stated in Shanghai, Dongwong, Fushun, Guangzhou, and other cities. The food was amazing and that's not even covering the amount of vegetarian and vegan options. There's still remaines a big gap in the Boise area. Also there were not a lot of vegetarian or vegan options available or presented when I asked our server, which was shocking. So many great vegetables with recipes that could have been incorporated into the menu. We may agree to disagree about the authenicity of Mala House, but our experience was just ok at best which means we won't be back.

I was over in the area today for lunch and happened to see this joint right across the street…read more Negranti has been on my to go list so this was perfect timing! I crossed the intersection from Pig Latin and was there in less than a minute. Pulling up, the shop had a bunch of seating outside. I adore the picnic tables with the big umbrellas. I can imagine having a nice scoop of ice cream, sitting under the big umbrellas and enjoying the vibe. Walking into the shop, it's very bright and simple. Bright white walls, simple shelves with merch and goodies for sale. A very classic and clean venue. I love the big black and white menu boards. I appreciate when a venue can be beautifully classic. I stopped in for coffee today. Ice cream will have to be another adventure here. I ordered my usual drink today. An iced americano with sugar free vanilla and room for cream. I feel like it's a good basic drink to get at every coffee joint to be a baseline of how they make their coffee. I wanted a 12oz but 16oz is how they serve their small iced beverages so I went with it. The sweet gal got my drink started and I checked out the merch. I love the all mugs available. I have too many mugs at home. There was a cute white mug with little red hearts all over it! My husband would not be happy if I brought home another mug but man it was so tempting. There were unique bottled sodas and packaged ice cream that you can take with you. The root beer is a must try next time too besides the ice cream. The bottle makes me feel like that for beer is going to be out of this world good. My coffee was ready and I headed out to one of the picnic tables outside to chill at and enjoy my drink. September weather was perfect today. sunny and not too hot. Well, I really wanted to enjoy my drink. Unfortunately, it was really watered down. The drink itself was very light and opaque. From the flavoring of the espresso and vanilla, it was hardly there. There was no richness of the half and half, no bitterness of the espresso. It was quite a disappointing drink. I tried to drink a much as I could but I couldn't drink any more of it. I drank about a fourth of it. I don't know if the gal working needs a little more training on the espresso machine and how drinks are made but it wouldn't be a bad idea since this joint promotes itself as a coffee shop. The shop itself is great! The reviews on the ice cream are all the same, delicious. But the few coffee reviews are on the same page as me, disappointing. I'm happy I got to mark this cute spot off my to go list today. I do look forward to coming back for ice cream and bottled root beer.

I ordered a cappuccino. Maybe their ice cream is good but the cappuccino was a hot foamy cup of milk with a slight flavor of espresso, not my idea of a cappuccino.. I'll make sure to come back and try their ice cream.
