I've been to probably 100 gyms in my life and was a long time 20 plus year, member of the West End gym in Lowell. MK is nice, friendly, and most of all they push you to be better. I'm really surprised that there are bad reviews of this gym. It's really open, not super-crowded, affordable and far cleaner than a previous Boston-area "boutique" gym I used to belong to. No Jersey-shore wannabe "trainers" trying to sell their services while you try to work out. They offer a good variety of classes, and I don't feel too intimidated, as a woman, to participate. The customer service I've received has been very courteous and professional. I'm an adult, and read contracts before signing them, so I know that if I want to break the contract, I'll pay a fine. (This is a real contract, people and the gym has every right to require it as it is a real business.) Equipment is plentiful and well-maintained, there's always parking available, etc. If you are trying to train for pro- MMA or boxing, I don't understand why you couldn't do it here... you only get what you put in. Don't blame the gym, blame yourself. Also, yes; women, EVEN MOMS do use this gym. We make up 50% of the world's population, so yes, some of us will be at "your" gym. GTFO "gentlemen". read more

After looking around for gyms in the Wilmington/Woburn/Burlington area, I finally settled here. It's got a great balance for beginners and some damn advanced classes if you can stick through it. To give you background info, I'm out of shape. Badly. And I drink beer like it's nobody's business. And we aren't talking Bud Light, we're talking imperial stout beers. I love me some calories. And hated exercise. The rates here aren't bad, I signed up for a year and got some sort of promo discount and it ended up averaging to be about 65$ a month for a year contract. Not a bad price at all. They have classes all throughout the day. Tues and Thurs they open at 530 AM for a class. Otherwise they open at 9 I believe and close at 9 PM, with classes pretty much running right up to 830. I went with beginner's kickboxing, and the teacher Bobby has been damn demanding about it. He comes over, he corrects you, he encourages you, and he doesn't let up for that hour. It's just enough to keep me interested and coming back. The class is definitely open to everyone though. We literally have a range of complete new people like me to tournament ready fighters in there. Even a pair of 12 year old kids trying to learn. It's completely open, guys, girls, all ages, everyone's pretty chill here. Honestly, this is what I've been looking for in a gym. Come check it out. read more

Don't book through yelp because they don't do the first class for free. It's 10 dollars to drop in for a class. My friends and I went for intro to boxing and that's really what it is, a lot of talking and nothing really going on. I think it's valuable what they were saying but if ur not looking to train to be a pro and just looking for a place to work up a sweat I would say this isn't the place for you. I've been a member at MK for a year now and wouldn't think of going somewhere else! Between the amount of gear and equipment, and the great people, I love this gym. A few things about MK: -MK is certainly a mixed martial arts gym. At first sight most of its members come in for boxing. MK offers kickboxing, Muay Thai, and Jiu Jitsu classes that are legitimate classes taught by instructors who are experienced by either being current fighters or who have previously fought and now teach. These are not those typical cardio classes that you see advertised elsewhere. The classes are not directly aimed towards training someone for a fight. You will learn basic skills and techniques and if you're willing to learn can definitely pick up more advanced techniques which you can apply if you want to actually train for a fight. There are a few instructors and members who may be willing to train you for a fight, just ask around or ask the owner. There are also cardio kickboxing classes and other conditioning classes that are great workouts that are more creative than what you may usually think of. -Sparring: MK is one of the only, if not the only gym around that allows sparring and contact between members. Title boxing, ilovekickboxing, etc will not offer this as it's a liability and members are to adhere to whatever is being taught in class. The only other types of gyms that allow sparring are mma gyms that are geared towards training you to be a fighter. MK's boxing class has designated days for sparring unless the instructor adds sparring onto other days as well. There are no specific kickboxing or Muay Thai sparring days at this time though MK allows any of it members to spar, meaning if you have a partner at the gym who wants to spar, you can use the ring or cage if it's free to spar on your own time. Grappling is done during jiu jitsu or with a partner on the mats, or in the ring or cage. -Equipment: MK has a weight area and typical gym machines to use at your leisure as well kettle balls, ropes, a sled, tires, etc. There are mitts, shields, and body pads to be used in both the classes and on your own time with a partner. There's plenty of heavy bags as well as a variety of other bags (wrecking balls, speed bags, double end bags, etc). All of these are open to members at any time unless there's a class that are utilizing most of that area or equipment (though there's still plenty space and equipment to use). -Facility: this gym is not a chain, but has one owner. Equipment will range from a few years old to some newer stuff. This means that it's members definitely use the equipment. It's a gym, there's sweat, it's going to be hot, and slightly smelly. You're not going to walk into a top notch facility, but you are going to walk into a much larger one that has many options. There are locker rooms with showers too. -Members: there are many regulars who come to MK. Everyone is friendly, willing to help you if you have a question, and willing to workout with you depending on what the planned workout is. I probably say hi to 90% of the people I see in one day when I'm at the gym. A lot of us know each other by name, some of us are friends, and overall it's a positive environment! You can probably hear me laughing across the gym anytime I'm in because we actually enjoy our time at the gym and have fun. The gym is very male heavy, but there are a few women who come in on a routine basis. The guys here though are not meatheads like a lot of other gyms. And if you are a female, like me, will not make you feel uncomfortable. And if for whatever reason there is that person who makes you uncomfortable, just let an instructor or owner know. They'll nip that in the bud real quick. MK is overall a great place to go whether you are looking for a great workout or want to learn mma techniques. Whether you are a beginner, or someone with experience who wants an affordable gym they can go to workout on the bags or do partner work. Whether you want to take a class or workout on your own. TOTAL RIP OFF.. You can not cancel .. My daughter was a member for over 2 years. We gave a doctors note and was told that in order to cancel (even with a Dr. Note) we must pay a $150 cancellation fee... I explained that Ma. AG office says its illegal to charge a cancellation fee with a Dr. note .. Mike the owner said he didn't care and was going to put me into collections .. They will not let you cancel even if you have a valid reason. Be careful with this business .. Response to owner: First off I never said that my daughter didn't enjoy her classes or said they were poorly taught...My daughter was a member for 2 years and she only attended about 1 year of classes.She was absent from over 50% of her class witch I continued to pay for.After missing over 6 months straight I got a doctors note to excuse her from classes and my contract per MASS state law. I honored my commitment and when it was time for you to honor your commitment you didn't. You say " parent refused to compromise in any way" are you kidding?Your contract cannot charge for a $150 to cancel period. AFTER RECEIVING MY DOCTORS NOTE YOU REFUSED TO ACCEPT IT AND THREATEN TO PUT ME IN COLLECTION.IT IS CLEARLY AGAINST MASS STATE LAW TO CHARGE A CANCELLATION FEE FOR A EXCUSED CANCELLATION...AFTER BEING A LOYAL CUSTOMER FOR 2 YRS YOU TREATED US LIKE STRANGERS WHEN WE HAD A RIGHT TO LEAVE. Your contract is subject to MASS state laws but for some reason you think you can strong arm and intimidate your canceling members. She has since healed and is attending a martial art school that just isn't in it for the money..There is a similar concern here regarding your contracts by many previous members.. TOTAL RIP OFF....MY RATE WAS $125 PAY AS YOU GO WHEN IT DROPPED TO $75 THEY DIDN'T TELL ME AND WOULD NOT GIVE ME MY $ BACK.. THE MASS AG's OFFICE HAS COMPLAINTS ON FILE ABOUT THIS COMPANY.. BEWARE !!!!! When I approach the owner about the decrease in dues he told me I had agreed to pay the $125 thats what I must pay..If I wanted to resign up he would give me the new rate but I need to pay the start up fee of $150 again.. I was a member at MK boxing for about 3months.I found the place to be a total rip off.Classes that were to be taught by certain instructors very often got canceled and replaced by uniformed instructors. Having had 10yr of martial arts prior to signing up I was hoping to get back into shape.However the knowledge of some of the teachers was limited.The ones that were good all left to go to other schools.I was told they only make $10-20 a session. They teach all levels at the say time.How can a 10 yr black belt learn next to a student that was his first day.I witness a inexperienced fighter holding pads for a experienced fighter.the beginner didnt hold the pads correctly and got KO'd.It was very sad.they should have never been matched up together. This is not a place that you want to learn from and then get into a street fight because you will get your head kicked in. In response to owners claims...He says that " We have had no cancelled classes at this gym. I am the owner of this gym, and we have not had a cancelled class in many months." I don't mean to be hard on this place because in general it is a very friendly and welcoming gym. However, as I've heard from others and experienced it for myself, this is not a martial arts school or especially a MMA gym. This was even confirmed from an instructor at the facility who told me this. It's basically a gym with fitness classes. While the price is not bad (from a martial arts perspective & sign up for a long contract) you can get the same workout at a group fitness kickboxing class at a regular club for a lesser price. On another note, traditional "real" boxing gyms cost even less usually around $20-$30. This place is a glorified cardio kick boxing class. So while their motto is "this isn't your old man's gym" it is very much so except I'd say more like your moms gym. As you will find many moms working along side of you. Nothing wrong with that, but definitely look closely at what your getting. Again nothing against certain instructors or the facility, it's just not a school wear you want to learn martial arts. I'd just encourage you to take a few classes or pay for one month before committing. If however you're looking to learn basic boxing skills and enjoy hitting pads consistently then I'd say go for it. They have a decent free weight area, but nothing more then you could get out of a hotel gym. They do have showers which is nice and the place is kept clean. I hate leaving negative reviews, but I just want to put that out there for individuals who are seeking quality martial arts instruction and are tempted by the low price tag. They also don't offer a free class which is another thing that is never a good sign. They told me I had to pay $25 for a day pass, so just opted and paid for one month. The woburn area in general does have some very good martial arts so definitely find what suits you best. Also...to back up Diane's review there have been two instructors that I know of that have left and opened there own gyms...Ron Campos (fenix fight club...awesome gym) Doug Burger (great muay thai coach) and there was even a really qualified boxing instructor who also left but I forgot his name. So yes she is correct. Again don't mean to be ripping on the place, but it is true that at the time (sure staff is better trained now) the instructors were very green. I just want individuals to really shop around before committing to contracts which are becoming too prevalent in the MA communities. A little rant here...Contracts are needed to keep doors open and MA schools have now adopted what fitness clubs know all along. Be very sure you enjoy your MA gym before you sign the dotted line to save a couple bucks per month. A few dollars extra for paying per month provides peace of mind and insurance against poorly operated facilities. With that said being said school owners should serve their clientele. Not just get people to sign the dotted line because their expected to deliver a service. My experience was this place under served it's clients quality martial arts. And in response to the owner's comments. Wow. You "don't offer free classes". I don't care what gym or martial arts studio you go to it's common place to offer a free class (or free weeks at a time). Very unprofessional. Being in the service industry I'd want someone to sample my product before committing or God forbid if they are dissatisfied, force unhappy clients to be members. read more

My experience at MK Boxing was an introduction walk thru plus the owner let my son try a class. Sadly my son did not like boxing but the owner was very kind and understanding to his needs. My husband is particular when it comes to quality instruction based on actual technique having spent time in the military. I am in education and I am picky when it comes to how well an establishment spends on actual instruction, positive reinforcement and giving a personal feel to participants. We have tried many different facilities and classes in the surrounding communities and have never stayed for more than a session. Coming MK Boxing was a complete difference. My husband was pleased with the error corrections and focus on technique and I am extremely pleased with the level of individualization, structure and seemless transitions between stations. The team of coaches take their time to learn the students names and remember them week to week. They create breakout groups based on not only age but also ability. I cannot say enough about MK Boxing. We purchased our next round of sessions after our second class. This place is the real deal! read more

My 9-12 year old son is taking a class here. What an experience for him! He loves it and the teacher is the perfect blend of hard ass and patient. Demanding and complimentary. I've been a member of MK Boxing for a little over 2 months now, and I absolutely love it. I was stuck in a workout rut and SO BORED of either outdoor runs or typical indoor gyms, and decided to give boxing a try. Mike, the owner, has been incredible at encouraging me and coaching me (I take 2 classes a week, plus one personal training session with Mike a week) and I have never felt more confident, fit and overall satisfied with my workouts. The gym is spacious and has PLENTY of equipment, and so far, every other member I've worked out with has been friendly and welcoming. Just took the Boxing, Kickboxing, Conditioning class and it was by far the most challenging and fun class I've taken in a very long time. I've been in the fitness industry and taking boxing lessons and classes for 20 years. I'm very particular about where I workout and I've been disappointed with other places because the focus at other gyms/studios has been to make you sweat by moving as quickly through the movements as possible at the expense of proper technique and safety. But at MK the class is well programmed. You get technique and the conditioning emphasizes that technique as well as getting in your push-ups and burpees. I usually do my workout in the late afternoon but this class did the impossible and I will be getting up on Sunday morning to join in the fun! read more

By Far the Best Gym no matter your skill level. In the short time I have been taking classes there, I have come to love the place and the environment. Not once have i felt out of place, or even uncomfortable because of my in experience. the other members treated me as one of the gang from the first class. not only have I learned from Mike, but everyone is willing to critique each other while we train. First of all, prior to signing up for this gym, the class I was most interested in (MMA) was listed as 2 tines a week. I signed the year contract and then found out it was just a no gi BJJ class and they did not have an MMA class. Secondly, they were supposed to have automatic payments set up and I didn't think anything of it until the lady came to me and told me they messed up and were not taking out enough, thus threw a $490 bill and say it was my fault. I've had several boxing/BJJ/MMA gym memberships and the customer service here is by far the worst. MK boxing is good facility with plenty of bags and space. If you want to just workout and sweat you will get that. If you want to train to fight you will not get that. They have the instructors capable of training fighters but the owner holds them back with a class schedule that fits his needs and not the needs of members or potential members. It is obvious he is only driven by money and doesn't have the passion for the sport of boxing, muay Thai, or Bjj. There are no sparring classes and a lot of empty spaces on the schedule. I worked out here for a few years and watched classes disappear off the schedule. I will not be going back to this gym. read more

This gym is ideal for anyone with boxing/MMA skills at ANY end of the spectrum. I walked into this gym with NO experience, and the instructors including Mike, the owner, were outstanding- motivating, welcoming, encouraging, and knowledgeable. They pushed you only until you reached your limit- but understand that every person has different abilities. And they made class FUN- not intimidating. Now, I unfortunately relocated a year ago and am forced to join another gym- which doesn't even compare to this one! MK boxing is the real deal. I signed up for a new gym where I reside now (the other side of boston) & I think all of the gym members and instructors are surprised at my skills! All the credit given to wonderful instructors at MK. I have no regrets and joining was worth every penny.
