Here's the short version: if you expect more from a gym, regardless of your level, join Skill of…read moreStrength (SOS) right now. The Details: Several years ago I switched from traditional conditioning (machines, rote freeweight exercises) to functional training. If I only knew sooner... The trainer who originally taught me and my kids moved out of reach. Since then I've engaged in a pretty arduous search and ended up at SOS. As far as I can tell, it's one of a handful of gyms of its kind in the Boston area, and it happens to be at 73 Princeton St., North Chelmsford MA 01863 (https://www.skillofstrength.com). SOS does a terrific job of translating cutting edge methods to well structured and original routines that can be followed by all levels of ability. On one hand there's a somewhat more casual crowd that does a modified version of the day's program (I'm in their MOVE class) and they seem quite content. I'm absolutely, 100% all for that. At the same time, there's another crowd that's always pushing for the next level. Despite the wide ranging audience, SOS underscores the experience with some very subtle social norms - very healthy, and it creates a great vibe. My first experience with SOS was sending my high school aged son through their COMPETE program. It accomplished everything I was hoping for - measurable gains in quickness, strength, cardio, reinforcement of footwork, increased confidence, and familiarization with a vocabulary that athletes require if they're going to progress. All in a personal, incredibly positive environment. Why SOS works for me: starting in my teens and stretching into my late 30's I spent a good portion of time working with skill coaches and strength & conditioning coaches. Together, they made a huge difference in my progress. I don't play a sport anymore, but I still want a technical workout oriented toward increased fitness. SOS delivers in spades. I'm a bug for technique - I actually believe that 5 pounds done right is better than 50 pounds done wrong. As a result I'm constantly asking questions, getting terrific guidance, and no one's lost patience or interest - instead, they seem to be totally into it. SOS has also taught me additional, helpful routines for balance (which are actually fun, and this stuff is supposed be fun), and I'm still pulling myself together on their footwork drills - happily. If you have kids or student athletes who would benefit from a thoughtful, engaging workout, or if you're looking for something different and well structured, or if you simply burn for a good workout, SOS is a terrific place.

I've been a member at MK for a year now and wouldn't think of going somewhere else! Between the…read moreamount of gear and equipment, and the great people, I love this gym. A few things about MK: -MK is certainly a mixed martial arts gym. At first sight most of its members come in for boxing. MK offers kickboxing, Muay Thai, and Jiu Jitsu classes that are legitimate classes taught by instructors who are experienced by either being current fighters or who have previously fought and now teach. These are not those typical cardio classes that you see advertised elsewhere. The classes are not directly aimed towards training someone for a fight. You will learn basic skills and techniques and if you're willing to learn can definitely pick up more advanced techniques which you can apply if you want to actually train for a fight. There are a few instructors and members who may be willing to train you for a fight, just ask around or ask the owner. There are also cardio kickboxing classes and other conditioning classes that are great workouts that are more creative than what you may usually think of. -Sparring: MK is one of the only, if not the only gym around that allows sparring and contact between members. Title boxing, ilovekickboxing, etc will not offer this as it's a liability and members are to adhere to whatever is being taught in class. The only other types of gyms that allow sparring are mma gyms that are geared towards training you to be a fighter. MK's boxing class has designated days for sparring unless the instructor adds sparring onto other days as well. There are no specific kickboxing or Muay Thai sparring days at this time though MK allows any of it members to spar, meaning if you have a partner at the gym who wants to spar, you can use the ring or cage if it's free to spar on your own time. Grappling is done during jiu jitsu or with a partner on the mats, or in the ring or cage. -Equipment: MK has a weight area and typical gym machines to use at your leisure as well kettle balls, ropes, a sled, tires, etc. There are mitts, shields, and body pads to be used in both the classes and on your own time with a partner. There's plenty of heavy bags as well as a variety of other bags (wrecking balls, speed bags, double end bags, etc). All of these are open to members at any time unless there's a class that are utilizing most of that area or equipment (though there's still plenty space and equipment to use). -Facility: this gym is not a chain, but has one owner. Equipment will range from a few years old to some newer stuff. This means that it's members definitely use the equipment. It's a gym, there's sweat, it's going to be hot, and slightly smelly. You're not going to walk into a top notch facility, but you are going to walk into a much larger one that has many options. There are locker rooms with showers too. -Members: there are many regulars who come to MK. Everyone is friendly, willing to help you if you have a question, and willing to workout with you depending on what the planned workout is. I probably say hi to 90% of the people I see in one day when I'm at the gym. A lot of us know each other by name, some of us are friends, and overall it's a positive environment! You can probably hear me laughing across the gym anytime I'm in because we actually enjoy our time at the gym and have fun. The gym is very male heavy, but there are a few women who come in on a routine basis. The guys here though are not meatheads like a lot of other gyms. And if you are a female, like me, will not make you feel uncomfortable. And if for whatever reason there is that person who makes you uncomfortable, just let an instructor or owner know. They'll nip that in the bud real quick. MK is overall a great place to go whether you are looking for a great workout or want to learn mma techniques. Whether you are a beginner, or someone with experience who wants an affordable gym they can go to workout on the bags or do partner work. Whether you want to take a class or workout on your own. It's pretty much my second home! Check it out!

I was an amateur MMA fighter and a blue belt in BJJ, and I wanted to find a place that I could continue to train BJJ and MMA and progress as a fighter. I did a ton of research to find a gym that could help me reach my goals and Triumph BJJ seemed to be the best fit. They had lots of good fighters that were competing and winning so I figured they had to be doing something right, so I ended up joining and I am glad I did. I have been training here since then, about 2 and a half years ago. Their Schedule can't be beat offering high level training in BJJ 7 days a week and Striking (Boxing or Muay Thai) most days of the week and led by quality instructors. Also, they just moved into a giant brand new facility with massive amounts of mats space, a full sized mma cage and brand new heavy bags and striking equipment. The classes range from fundamental to high paced competition classes, and there is a wide variety of students with many higher belts on the mats each night and also plenty of white belts. So whether you're already experienced or brand new you will fit right in. Whether you are looking to try bjj or mma for a fun way to get in shape, or to learn to defend yourself, or if you have goals of competing in BJJ or MMA, Triumph is the place to do it. The trainers were nice enough, but it was disappointing that during the workout they seemed very distracted. It was difficult to focus on the warm up exercises they assigned while they were gossiping about students with each other. I believe the trainers are knowledgeable and I would get a good education, but the lack of focus and lax attitude just really made me unmotivated to go back. If you are not excited about Muay Thai then how can you make me excited? I also didn't like that they are somewhat secretive with their pricing scheme. I asked several times about price and was never given a straight answer. Makes it seem less legitimate. UPDATE: The owner reached out to me and I got the impression my experience was the exception and not the rule. Having said that I have already moved on to a new exercise venue and won't be giving sitsuphan another chance, but I am going to upgrade my rating to reflect my interaction with the owner.
