For over a decade, I have dealt with a persistent pain on my left rhomboid. It felt like a stabbing knife. Like my left shoulder is on fire. This pain started due to no specific injury. Most likely it started due to repeated poor posture, and prolonged hours at the desk. I've gotten various types of body therapy - chirotpractic, licensed massage therapy, assisted stretching, physiotherapy, etc. None of the treatments really worked. I wasn't sure what to expect from Rolfing, but I knew that my pain didn't seem to be responding to anything else. When I saw Marcel, I had severe pain in my foot that was impeding walking. The pain was temporary alleviated by new orthotics, but then returned. The amazing physical therapist who helped me fix my knee couldn't seem to help my foot. After 5 sessions with Marcel, I'm no longer taping my foot and I'm pain free. My hips have a lot more movement as well. I'm walking regularly now and realized this week I wasn't afraid to jog. As the rest of Marcel's reviews demonstrate, he is excellent. For me, I did not go to Marcel like some other reviewers with a lot of particular pain or any serious injury. Rather, perhaps like some of you, I was just a fairly active person with a fairly long-houred desk job and had developed a series of "discomforts" and body issues which I had been attempting the usual tack of rolling, stretching, and occasional massage to treat. However, I wanted a solution that was more of a solution instead of a band-aid, so I turned to Marcel and Rolfing. I am happy I did. My posture is better, my flexibility is better, most of the minor aches and pains I experienced before are gone, and I have a better sense of how my body moves and operates. My plan from here is to continue with some of the more lower-key maintenance that I did in the past with the occasional visit to Marcel to address any niggling issue. And like all of the reviewers on here state--Marcel is kind, communicative, and really creates the optimal environment for this kind of work. I have struggled with posture issues causing discomfort for many years. I've been to chiropractors, massage therapists, and acupuncturists which all provided some relief, but the relief was always temporary. I also tried doing a variety of different physical exercises at home, but that wasn't enough to make things better. Within the last year, the discomfort was so bad that it was getting difficult for me to work - I constantly had back pain, I wasn't able to sit for very long without pain, and I sometimes felt so tired that I couldn't make it to the office and had to work from home. I was actually worried that I wouldn't be able to work in another year or two. I decided to try Rolfing to see if it would offer a longer term solution and stumbled across Marcel when looking for a Rolfer near me. I have now finished 8 sessions in the 10-series, and I feel so much better - it's actually a bit hard for me to remember exactly how much pain I was in just a few months ago. I never have to stay home to work anymore, and I also have no issues with sitting anymore. Not only that, I have a much better sense of my own posture, which definitely helps with not going back to how I used to be. Marcel is really attentive and makes sure to focus on all problem areas you mention. He suggests exercises / awareness exercises that can be helpful to you and always answers whatever questions you may have. I have had a constant pinch in my neck and shoulder blade for several years now. I've had PT, massages, acupuncture and many cortisone shots. Nothing helped. I have never read through others' reviews on a biz (if not too many) & clicked "like" like I do here, but I agree with other patients' reviews & 5 stars here about Marcel as a person & as a Rolfing practitioner. He is calming, wonderfully caring & skilled at this form of healing methods. In early Nov 2019, my left shoulder/arm had been enduring a week of constant acute pain when I found MK Rolfing here on yelp & saw that he treated "frozen shoulder" conditions which I had been unwillingly suffering for a few months (my right shoulder had not been back to complete mobility yet but was not in pain). I contacted Marcel on his website (you can leave messages & book appts) who called me back to try for a session and he also was able to find an opening on the following week. After 1st treatment, the acute pain was almost gone -- What a difference! There are pains we humans do not need to suffer! Ever since then I have been going to Marcel for treatments with variety of pain which changes weekly & he has been able to reduce the pain while my left shoulder remains stubbornly with limited mobility though one of the purposes of Rolfing techniques is to find the original cause, not mere to reduce the pain, but my difficult conditions challenge Marcel haha. My healing journey got complicated after 1st session when I got whiplash from a 3-car-rear-ended incident by a distracted doctor driver (!) that it took a good 2 months for my head to feel back to normal again & I was so grateful that I could go to Marcel as the incident contributed more unwanted pain to my shoulder! I have been amazed & in awe at how creative Rolfing could be, each session with different positions & strokes to work on releasing the tight connective tissues, muscles. Rolfing is definitely interactive between practitioner & patient as Marcel will do his fascia work with focus & patient then ask me to move my arm around on the treatment table or standing up from sitting depending on where we work, to see if the pain level has reduced or/and any improvements with the mobility. At times he would guide my arm to move in slow motions after he works for a while. He'd check-in with me while he works to make sure I am ok. Time flies by while he takes time to work at different areas that happen to be places that need attention. Having gone through rigid (or lack of) physical therapy sessions where tissue works takes only a few short minutes by the therapists, acupunture treatments & massages where the healers were very proud of their capabilities to treat my conditions but did not see significant progress and had personality issues that I wondered how they were in customer-service-oriented healing field (?), Marcel, in clear contrast, is gentle, easy to talk to, lets his work speak for itself & genuinely caring for his patients' improvements. Rolfing treatments could be comforting or painful depending on a particular condition. I have experienced both pain (Marcel will reduce pressures as needed as being effective without much discomfort is the goal) & pain-free-work where I could have a quick nap! Since Rolfing & other alternative treatments are often not included in the insurance network, its out-of-pocket expenses are well worth it if you have my healing ordeals, but of course I wish it was in the network & didn't have to do claims. I also understand it is a real hassle for a one-person-biz to deal with giant insurance companies. Marcel's simple treatment room is in a red carriage housing structure, unique & welcoming as it's got a big window that lets the natural light shine through while he uses a curtain that protects the privacy. (No need to change it!) The treatment rooms are usually windowless which I find stuffy, so I appreciate how bright his light-filled treatment room is with warm temperature. Concentrated session spent by his individualized care is like a sacred healing time before going back to a noisy world. I hope this lockdown will be soon over for him to continue doing what he loves & others to benefit from his skills. read more

I started seeing Marcel two months ago and I never want to stop. I've suffered with chronic pain for most of my life, due to both physical and emotional traumas, as well as fibromyalgia. Now, I've had a chiropractor whom I'm devoted to and have seen for a few years now, but adding Marcel into my self care has been a next level experience. First of all, Marcel, both as a person and professional, is incredibly kind and considerate. His knowledge of the body and its biomechanics baffles me. It's intense and methodical work, but his patience and quiet nature offer support and deep respect for the body. This is in no way a relaxing spa-like experience. You both work together to help reeducate your body to move the way it should, and to break through movement patterns that are causing pain or tightness. If you're looking for complete relief of pain and stiffness, look no further. There are things my body does and that I have just accepted as the experience of human suffering, only to learn that being in my body can actually be quite comfortable. I came to see Marcel after a friend had highly recommended Rolfing as a bodywork treatment, and Marcel as an exceptional therapist. I couldn't believe how different my body felt after the first few sessions. Marcel is extraordinary. He was recommended by my personal trainer. I did a first session and then the formal Ten-Session series. It has been terrific in subtle yet transformational ways. I walk more upright with better posture. I hold myself differently - naturally. I am more aware of my body in a positive way. I am far less tight! I exercise regularly and since seeing Marcel the exercise is less forced. Overall, I simply feel better. Marcel himself is in great shape which is confidence-inspiring. After speaking with my contortion coach about all my bodily pains, he recommended "Rolfing", so one night when I couldn't fall asleep because I was in excruciating pain, I searched online for a location nearby and stumbled upon MK Rolfing with Marcel. Prior to my first session, I reinjured my shoulder, so I walked into Marcel's office in quite a lot of pain, and not much mobility in my shoulder. I lay down on his table and he got right to work on me. After the hour session I had full mobility in my shoulder. I waited to see if this was just a temporary fix, but I am happy to report I have not since felt this pain my shoulder. Before seeing Marcel, I would wake up every morning, and need to use a foam roller to adjust myself and use it before a big workout/hike. I no longer feel it necessary after the work with Marcel. Marcel is the best body worker I've ever had the privilege of working with. As a yoga teacher for the last decade, I can confidently say that I have seen A LOT of assorted practitioners from massage to chiropractic to acupuncture and more. I've even worked with other Rolfers in the past. The healing that has happened to my body throughout the 10 series with him has been nothing short of amazing. I was at a point where I was ready to start looking into potential surgery after years of complex, chronic pain and now I finally feel like I can start moving and exercising again in a productive and functional way. Since completing the 10 series I'm able to do things I haven't been able to do in years. He truly has a level of expertise in understanding the body that is top of the line. Anyone can treat the body but not everyone has a genuine gift for doing it. Each session he takes notes on what I tell him and each session feels like collaborative experience. I've truly never had anyone care about my physical issues as much as he has and I could never thank him enough for that alone. There are so many specialists who boot you out the door after 15, 20 or even 40 minutes and onto their next client but it never feels like that with Marcel. After a year of body alignment challenges, I finally decided to try Rolfing. Twice weekly appointments with a physical therapist and 1 weekly appointment with a orthopedic massage therapist for an entire year had barely-noticeable results - the changes were incremental and never fully restored my movement practice. In conjunction with the physical therapy and orthopedic massage, I also was doing Yin, Hatha, Hyperice compression therapy, Acupuncture, and Ayurvedic massage and would feel better for a maybe few days but the results would not stick. I was at the end of my rope and was considering PRP and Tissue Regeneration Technologies (TRT) laser therapy and decided to try one more type of body work before doing PRP or laser. Marcel is extremely gifted and I highly recommend his work. Rolfing is a form of bodywork that reorganizes the connective tissues, called fascia, that permeate the entire body. Fascia connects all the muscles, bones, tendons, ligaments, and blood - meaning all these systems are held together by fascia. I had heard that Rolfing was painful but in my experience it did not hurt. I did not experience the sensation as pain, rather as information that needed to be investigated further. There were a few differences I noticed between Rolfing and other bodywork I've had in the past. First, there was no music which I really enjoy - the opportunity of silence really allows me to connect with the areas in my body that Marcel is working on with no external stimuli. Second, Rolfing seems similar to a massage but its different - its firm, deep, and slow (like really slow) movements across the fascia in one specific area. For example, Marcel spent the entire session on my lower body: 45 minutes on my left lower body and 45 minutes on the right lower body. This was one of the main differences I noticed between Rolfing and other body work, Rolfing is extremely meticulous and leaves "no stone untouched". Areas that were completely ignored by past massage therapists, were FINALLY addressed in Marcel's Rolfing work. Rolfing, to me, is extremely therapeutic - there were a couple of times I had that that "hurt-so-good" sensation -- but overall it felt good to me. His touch is gentle but firm. I feel safe while he is working on my body. If you are someone who has experienced trauma, Marcel's bedside manner is impeccable. I'm almost finished with the 10-series and so much mobility and movement have been restored through these sessions. Before my work with Marcel, I had been scared to jog, run, hike and dance. All things I loved to do but had been put to the side due to the former misalignment in my body. I have been dancing again, have been able to go on short jogs, and do yogic balance work again. During one particular yoga practice, I had this overwhelming sense of comfortability in my body again - my body felt like home for the first time in a while. I am so grateful for finding Marcel's work and his willingness to work with me this year. So many personal care businesses were mandated to close or chose to close due to the CV-19 guidelines. If there was an option to give 6 stars I would. Marcel his work is one of a kind. Since becoming a mom, I've had increasing wrist pain for 2 years, and couldn't get rid of it. From the first session on the therapy felt spot on. Marcel has an amazing ability to tune into the body, and slowly decipher what's going on in the deeper levels. Where my shoulder and arm felt locked and tight, they feel now so much more at ease and 'workable' (I'm able to do exercises myself that keep the arm in very good shape). I'm also able to use my wrist pain-free. I would come into a session with tightness and discomfort and walk out of the office completely at ease. I highly recommend doing the 10-series, even - and I know that sounds weird - if you feel in relatively good shape. I've learned a ton about my own body and experienced through the sessions tightness in areas that I was consciously not aware of. It feels like I received a new road map that shows me how to work with my body instead of against it. Marcel also gave invaluable tips on how to pick up my running again, which I'd been doing all my life. After the pregnancies running felt simply terrible and exhausting, giving me a lot of pain and strain. I'm able to run completely at ease now and even dare to think about the next marathon. If only I could book an 8 hour session with Marcel! When you have a session with him it will be the highlight of your week! I cannot stress enough what a truly special person and amazingly skilled bodyworker he is. He is an incredibly gifted Rolfer who listens deeply and really cares about his clients and improving their quality of life and eliminating any and all pain/discomfort. He somehow manages to make the entire session experience pleasant, relaxing and wonderful (which most Rolfers do not do - most are agonizingly painful!). He asks the right questions up-front in his registration forms which allow him to quickly focus in on making dramatic and quick improvements to the areas of concern, so you will start to see results immediately. He stays in touch with his patients in-between appointments, and truly cares about the progress they make. I have completed 10+ sessions with him - all consistently wonderful and delivering great impact to me - and will continue to see him regularly. I am no longer seeing my other massage therapist as Marcel is by far the most impactful to all of my musculo-skeletal issues. As a former Stanford athlete and Olympic Trialist, and now mom of four young children, I have had the fortune of working with dozens of massage therapists, chiropractors, Rolfers, bodyworkers, Tui Na Chinese massage therapists, acupuncturists, etc over the last twenty five years. Marcel is the most impactful bodyworker I have worked with and I wish I had found him during my athletic career days! My body, my range of motion and my spirit all feel at least 10 years younger and 20 pounds lighter after a session.
