We still had a twenty-minute drive to the lodge when we reached the North gate. The drive was pretty, though, and passed quickly. The circular driveway in front of the lodge was clogged with cars, forcing us to park down the road a bit. No one was around to welcome us, and finding someone took us a bit. Once we did, the valets quickly took care of us, and we were checked in. Our room on the second floor overlooked the 18th green and a valley on the backside of the lodge. It was terrific: large and spacious, with lots of wood and chunky lodge-style furnishings. The bathroom was huge, with a large tub, separate shower, and his-and-hers sinks. The minibar came stocked with complimentary non-alcoholic drinks and some snacks. While staying here, we enjoyed their astronomy presentation at the top of the silo, walking on several trails through the nearby woods, time in the spa, and making smores out back by the fire pit in the evening with the other guests. There was a special cocktail hour with apps and drinks, and a chance to talk to some of the local providers of food and items to the hotel. They do an excellent job of using local sources for the lodge. Dining was top notch, except at the Stables family-style restaurant. The Stables was a disappointment. Our other meals though in the lodge were top notch. The staff at Primland is the best, and they are what make this place so special. Come visit in the summer and enjoy the cooler temperatures of the mountains.

There are ample staff, and everyone was very friendly and attentive. We enjoyed everything we ate, from the quick serve breakfasts and sandwiches at Martha's cafe, to dinners at Woody's, the breakfast buffet, and the gala dinner. It was always easy to find something to eat or drink, with various levels of service/formality. The gym is well appointed, and we really enjoyed the outdoor pool and hot tub. The afternoon tea and cookies is very crowded, but fun. The evening movie was a fun activity, with popcorn and nice seating . One thing I really liked was the number of occupied public spaces. The lobby/foyer has live music in the evenings, occasional tea and coffee service, couches and fireplaces. The Christmas decorations were just gorgeous. We enjoyed walking around to see them all. We also really liked the vibes in the Presidential Lounge and had drinks there on several occasions, taking our time. We are not fancy people, and did find the hotel rather expensive, and definitely still felt nickeled and dimed at times. There is no included food/beverages, and only part of the complex is available/included in your cost. We were able to use part of the outdoor pool, and the indoor pool and fitness center. The mineral pools, onsite and off, are additional fees, as are all meals, most coffee, etc. Parking is not included, and is valet only. There are numerous daily activities, most of which are an additional charge. Many did look enjoyable, but we opted out of the $75 bourbon tasting and $75 yoga classes. When the Omni is on, they are ON, but, to my point above, once they start to miss, they just kind of shrug it off and the mistakes feel expensive. My date had bought me a massage, which came with a spa day pass, which is the only way to use the spa garden and on site springs. We didn't realize at first that I already had a day pass, so we went ahead and purchased one for him to enjoy the facilities as well. On our spa day, the hot water was out, which meant that a decent number of the indoor facilities were not enjoyable. There were no discounts or alternatives offered, just kind of - it's not working. We still had a very nice spa day, but would have enjoyed the indoor showers, and actually, showering off, in January, in cold water after using the mineral springs, was not fun. When we ordered room service, half of our order was forgotten, and again, we were presented with a brief apology and the full bill, even though it took an additional 20 minutes for the food to arrive and I had finished eating mine by then. The most stressful error was when the bell staff dropped the garment bag containing my black tie dress on the floor in the hall, and we found it there when we came back to the room! I was really upset about that, though we didn't call the desk as we were tired and I did have the dress in the end, but this could have ended quite differently. I will also say that the walls are PAPER thin. A rather loud family occupied the room next to us for part of our stay and we could hear EVERYTHING. The historic property is just lovely, and the service was really nice. If we were to return, we would likely stay for a shorter visit, but it was definitely worth a trip.

Co. in volleyball. My husband wanted to come for a weekend getaway after Christmas and I was game. He's not from VA so I was looking forward to showing him around. I've visited for the day once almost 20 years ago and had lunch. This is a huge resort - and a lot of the amenities weren't really accessible to us that are outdoors - but, they did still have the heated outdoor and indoor spa pools open, ice skating, and some other things. My husband really wanted to try to ski or do snow tubing but none of that is open. The hotel was beautifully decorated for the Christmas holidays and they had trees everywhere - I probably saw over 25 trees and didn't even see them all - my baby girl loved exploring and running around the resort. They have a lot of activities throughout the day for children and families including evening entertainment in the lobby, children's activities, a photographer taking family portraits, game rooms, and multiple restaurants and shops. It is expensive to stay here - it's billed as a luxury resort - and it is beautiful, but it's in the actual middle of nowhere essentially and is a long drive on winding country roads. It's charming, but somewhat isolated and feels like a remnant of a bygone era. The spa building smelled awful, there was a lot of disarray there by the entrance, and the walkways and stairways aren't handicap/stroller accessible and several elevators weren't working making it difficult to navigate this huge resort easily/quickly to walk around with a stroller/toddler. Staff were hit or miss - staff at the restaurants were wonderful. Staff at reception and check-in were awful. We had communicated ahead of time that we had our baby and asked for early check-in and a crib/pack and play and both were confirmed. As we booked with our travel agent who gets perks with the hotel - early check-in was a part of our package anyway. We arrived around 4pm and our room was still no ready - we were placed in an area in the basement with no view and were not impressed at all. After my husband spoke to the front desk manager, we were moved to a different room with a gorgeous view and balcony. This room was spacious and much better. Still, they dropped the ball on several of the amenities we typically get through my agent (welcome letter, snack or amenities, breakfast, etc.). When we arrived the valet told my husband it was included with our stay at no charge, then my husband was charged $30 a day ($90) for our stay and was upset at checkout about being misled. It was a fun weekend but felt overpriced and the hotel needs some TLC in certain areas. I'm sure upkeep and maintenance is astronomical here, but the spa area was gross and the elevators and walking access are a huge issue.

When you pull in, you will be greeted by security at the front gate. We advised them we were there for the bunker tour and to do some shopping and they gave us a parking pass and directions to the best place to park. The resort is iconic, huge and pristine. We walked our dog around the grounds and up to the main building. Unfortunately, even though they say that the resort is dog friendly, there are some areas where dogs are not allowed. So I waited outside while my husband spoke to someone at the front desk about reserving a spot for the bunker tour. When he returned, I went inside while he stayed out front with our pup. When you walk in the decor hits you all at once and, if you are a Fallout fan like I am, everything just feels so familiar and comfortable. The bold, eccentric colors and patterns, the chandeliers and unique furniture... It's all there. I wandered through the shops which are upscale and fun to browse, even if you're just looking. I bought some giant macarons which were priced incredibly reasonably and really enjoyed them. All of the staff I encountered were friendly and helpful, and even without reservations, we were able to get tickets to the bunker tour. Be advised that they made it very clear to us that getting tickets "day of" is not the standard experience, so I do recommend reserving tickets if you want to do the tour. The vault tour itself is probably closer to four stars, but it's definitely a must. Knowing there was a fully built secret congressional bunker hidden underneath this glamorous resort for decades is wild. You walk through the old dorm rooms and meeting areas and see how it was all set up so long ago. You're not allowed to take any photographs, but I did read some basic information before coming. Still, reading about it and seeing it are two totally different things. It cost well over $100 for the two of us to do the tour and that is before tip so it definitely isn't cheap. It would have also been nice to have more seating, especially for things like watching the video, etc. My feet hurt a little after the tour from standing so long on the hard concrete floors of the bunker. The only reason that we did not end up spending the night is that we really wanted to be inside some of the main buildings and although they do offer dog friendly accommodations, they are only located within certain cottages kind of on the edges or outskirts of the property. There is also a $250 fee for dogs so we decided at the time that it would not be worth it for us, however, full disclosure: we regret that decision. We definitely should have spent the night. It was a once in a lifetime experience for me and if I ever get the chance to come back here I will definitely get a room and stay as long as I can, soaking up the ambiance and anemoia.

The cheapest daily rack rate on a weekday is a whopping $400+/night, not including all their BS fees: $49 daily resort fee per room and 9.75% Historic Preservation Fund, 6% sales tax. SO NOT WORTH IT! Seriously, I get keeping the iconic Draper theme, but you gotta upkeep everything to warrant that price! I stayed here for 3 nights for a conference, and had multiple interactions with staff from calling to make reservations for activities, the bunker tour, dinner at the main dining room, bowling and the conference room facilities. Customer service ranged here from very nice, cheerful and helpful to unaccommodating, aloof, and just plain rude. When asked questions about the facility or amenities, the staff would often give me blank stares or just shrug and say they didn't know. I was checked in by a trainee who did not give any direction on how to get to my room in the BOONIES (Copeland Hills) and we drove around aimlessly until we gave up and went back to valet to get directions. When I asked if I could be in the main hotel with my coworker at check in, another snooty employee (senior or the trainer, I dunno) blatantly said "no, your group is assigned to the cottages", which was 100% a lie because my coworker simultaneously checked in with another trainee and was given a room in the main hotel. The next day, a second coworker was also given a room in the main hotel. They both complained their rooms were creepy feeling, dirty and in need of some major renovations. So I guess depending on how you look at it, I had it better since my cottage in the boonies wasn't as old and was in pretty good shape. The wait staff at the conference was too efficient! I left my untouched dessert literally for a few minutes at my seat and when I returned it was gone! My fiancé did the bunker tour and the bourbon tasting. He was the only one at the bourbon tasting at 5:00pm and no one showed up for the 6:00pm either. At the end, he was given a non itemized bill for $88 (the base price was $65) and then he tipped on top of the $88 thinking that was the base rate! Clearly the astronomical service fees were already embedded in there. Throughout our stay, we wondered where everyone was. Despite being reservation only, the main dining room was at best 25% full when we were there on a Friday night. Everywhere we went: basically empty. The many random sitting rooms, the restaurants, the casino, the bowling alley, indoor pool, the bars. The only activity that had a decent amount of people was the bunker tour. There were many private events we saw set up everywhere though, and our conference alone was about 300. So maybe that's their thing. My coworkers had mini fridges in their room in the main hotel, my room in the cottages did not. My coworker called room service for ice (there are no self service ice machines) and it was delivered 2 hours later when she was sleeping. The room service delivery fee is $5 for the main hotel, but $20 for my cottage in the boonies. Why do I have to pay 4x in delivery fees when I asked to be in the main hotel to begin with? Ridiculous. The Greenbrier is old and busted and riding on the "historic" factor to draw in guests. If I stayed here for leisure and paid for this out of my own pocket, I would be even more pissed.

There are a couple of hiking trails on the property itself plus there is good fishing in the lake (I caught a couple of nice bluegill thanks to Lisa's tip on the best fishing spot) and you can use kayaks, a paddle boat and a row boat as well. Each cabin also has a firepit, grill and picnic table. The property location is perfect as well and you're only a couple of miles from a Dollar General, grocery store, and most importantly wineries and breweries while still being in a really quiet place. There are couple of minor issues to keep in mind but don't let them stop you from staying here. The lighting in the cabin's living was a little dim so it could be a little hard to read at night if you don't move right next to a lamp. The beds were comfortable but the mattresses were just a little hard but that's just personal preference. Things were pretty quiet outside when we were there but I could see the lake getting a little busy if all four cabins were full and everyone wanted to use the lake at the same time. Also keep in mind that pets are allowed in most of the cabins and I believe people are supposed to keep their dogs on leashes but didn't always do so. Duane and Lisa are awesome people and provide the southern hospitality that you'd expect. A storm was coming the day we were supposed to check in and they emailed us to let us know we could check in earlier than usual that day or even the night before to make sure we stayed safe. I'd come back here for sure and highly recommend checking this place out.

I absolutely loved it here. The golf course is spectacular. On the first tee box I had to pause…read morefor a moment. The fairway is probably 60-70 feet below you and stretches out towards the tree line. The par 3 2nd comes back a little to your left, and then you see the third hole as it wraps around water just below. Absolutely stunning. It's a tough track and I would say is fun from every set of tees (black, blue, white, gold, and even the red tees). Water comes into play on about a dozen holes. Highlights are the first tee box/first hole (it's a reachable par 5), the third as it wraps around a pond, the second half of the par 5 5th hole, the eighth hole looks like it's on top of the world, the views from the 10th tee box, the thirteenth hole (a brute of a par 5), and some of the best par 4s in Virginia (holes 15, 16, and 18). I stayed in the smaller of the two lodges that overlook the 18th green. We had a suite with a master with a king and another room with two double beds. Lots of space, two bathrooms, a kitchen, and a porch. It was also the cleanest room I may have ever stayed in. Some of the nicest views were from the porch that included the storm that rolled through at night and the fog that followed in the morning. There is only one restaurant on property and the food was excellent. Love that the dessert menu was never fixed. I had an ice cream cookie sandwich that was excellent. The people here truly make this place special. Whoever cleaned our room deserves a raise. Bo (the head pro) and Sherrie in the pro shop are maybe the nicest people I have met playing golf, and that is saying something. The wait staff and grounds crew were all extremely nice as well. I know there is a 5-star resort down the road that I visited for a bit, but I would much rather be here every day of the week. (Not saying I wouldn't turn down a free stay and play at the other place.) Needless to say this is now on my list for places to have a relaxing weekend getaway filled with great golf.

Erica, the bartender, kept all our guests happy. The site has plenty of ice for all bartending needs, a kitchen for food setup and three eclectic bathrooms.
