Though Moby Dick gets extra points for playing an interesting variety of good and less-well-known music, including stuff by the divine Kylie Minogue, it loses points for getting so crowded on Saturday nights. Ended up here somehow. The drinks were reasonably priced, but then again, it was happy hour and they were having twofers. It wasn't crowded, however, the only place to sit other than the six stools at the bar were these strangely high benches up against the wall. I kinda felt like I was sitting on a cliff desperately hanging onto my gin and tonic for dear life. Other than that, the people were nice and unobtrusive, and the place wasn't too loud and obnoxious. Oh, one more thing: if you have to pee, hold it until you get to the nearest gas station. the men's room there is dark, seedy, there's a nasty pee-trough and no toilet, and you can barely see what you're doing. My dad and I (both straight) stopped in the afternoon. It was clean the drinks were cheap and strong! I don't usually care for frozen drinks but their frozen margaritas were pretty good!! The bartender was superb- funny,quick and knowledgable. We'd definitely go back!!! read more

Me and a group of girls went in here Saturday night not realizing it was a gay bar - we just heard good music and say some great looking men so we walked right in! Decided to stay anyway once we realized the vibe - ordered drinks, the bartender was friendly enough, made conversation and laughed with us. We were obviousley out of place, but none the less we were not uncomfortable enjoying ourselves here. The place was clean, drinks were reasonably prices and plenty strong. I won't be going back, it's not my sort of place, but if it's what you are into then give it a shot! read more

I've been going to this place occasionally for several decades now. It's a great corner bar, though it does get alittle too crowded on weekends sometimes. The drinks are strong, the prices are reasonable, the bartenders and the crowd are friendly, and it's convenient. If you're not a gay male, then you should probably stay out of the very dark bathroom, though. read more

Moby Dick's is a nice neighborhood bar. I love that there is a lot of natural light, and they often play good music. I often stop by to watch the Giant's games. Today when I came by they only had soccer on and wouldn't put the Giants game on any of their many tv's. I was told that soccer is better and since it's World Cup they wouldn't show the Giant's game. I might be able to understand the logic if USA was playing today. Personally I have a problem with that. The Giants are our local team, most of the people watching soccer haven't seen a game in years...they're just fans during the World Cup. I'll be back to enjoy Moby Dick's, but they need to realize there are many in this neighborhood that do support their local teams. I'll be going to the watering holes that I can count on the fact that they are playing our home team games. read more

This is my favorite bar in the Castro! You can actually have a conversation and be able to hear the people you are with! The staff is always helpful and pleasant and they have a healthy pour when it comes to a cocktail! This is one of the best bars in the neighborhood, not only does it have a fun bar staff but the patrons are a great mix of age and no attitude. Love their frozen 2 for 1 selection. They have fun events, fundraisers, local softball teams (Go Seamen!) and a big fish tank with colorful fish, good for those moments when you don't want to stare at your phone. A terrific neighborhood bar. Drinks are cheap and STRONG! Staff is ridiculously friendly. A large fish tank over the bar and great music and videos with multiple tvs. In the back there is a pool table and pingball machine. The mens room has mirrors on every wall and the ceiling, which might spook some guys out. I have found the clientele to be mostly locals and friendly. On Monday nights they have a model in the back and patrons are encouraged to bring their paintbrushes, pencils, charcoal, or whatever you want to sketch him. I have no idea why some believe it to be dirty; I have never experiecned that. I have ALWAYS had a good time here - every time! Wish they accepted credit cards - alas, it is cash only! read more

Talk about a sausage fest! As a straight person who loves the Castro, it often becomes super clear that the neighborhood is not catering to you. Don't get me wrong, I love this neighborhood. Living a few miles away from this place, I really wanted to make it my "Cheers". A place I could go to for a beer several times a week to unwind after work and before going home, but as many times as I went, it never got that feel. Definitely a pick up spot, or at least it seemed like it. The ratio of men to women, straight or otherwise, is about 95 to 5 and sometimes that makes a difference. Moby Dick was my second gay bar my friends took me to in my discovery of the Castro. I fell in love with this place when I saw the pinball machines. Pinball in gay bars?? YES!!!! They also have a pool table which this Sunday was unfortunately covered in straight tourists and their gay chaperones. No one actually playing pool. Moby Dick is the closest thing the Castro has to offer in terms of a gaming bar. I really need to go here during the week because I was told this was the Cheers of the Castro but my friends didn't even recognize anyone. The drinks were really stiff, I mean wow!! I like strong drinks but these made me feel like a woman. I had to ask for extra mixer on top to water it down a little. I needed a break from their cocktails so I ordered their frozen margaritas, which were deliiiiciiiious!! The bartender was a really nice woman who would totally be my type if I was a lesbian. She makes the dykes with bikes and lipstick fusion persona work! It was a little warm in here, because it's not the spaciest of bars. They had the doors all open and the front window too but I still had to go outside occasionally. It wasn't even that crowded so honestly I would hate to be here on a really crowded day. They did all they could to remedy this so I won't dock them points for it. I was a little disappointed about the crowd which is what cost this place 5 stars. The owners have balls putting that Esquire model at the door. I'm sorry but the owners of this place do realize most their customers are 40s and older right? Some of these guys look like they sit at the bar drinking from open to close. All the other bars have big, fat, ugly door guys. After writing my review, the owner of Moby Dick responded, in private email, from his owner verified yelp account, in defense. I should note that in all my years of Yelping establishments, no owner of a business has ever responded in such a poor, unprofessional demeanor. Just goes to show that some people aren't really fit for business. Anyway, I visited Moby Dick last night and noticed one of the other purple stripped fish swimming while rubbing its underbelly on the gravel below, then floating on the top of the water half the night as if it was dead, and suddenly spazzing around in circles. Seems like someone needs to upgrade their filter and check the ammonia levels in the water. Here are his responses: Really do you really think we switched fish to fool people? The only time put new fish in the tank is when one dies, which is very rare. I'm sorry about the cover charge on Wednesday nights, but the bar does not receive any of the money from that. The performer charges that, and keeps that to pay the other performers. It is easy to get around that cover charge, just come in before they start to charge and you can stay and watch the show for free. There is only a cover on that one night, we had a fundraiser the other night, that we asked for a donation, but it was up to you if you wanted to pay. Other than that we don't have events that we charge a cover for. When you write these things that are not correct, they not only affect the bar but the people that work there, I'm sorry if you had a bad experience and we strive to please everyone but sometimes it is impossible. It's a chill bar. There is no attitude, fun people, good vibe and cheap drinks (at least cheap for the Castro). It's not too twinky or too beary or too anything-y. It is the neighborhood bar for the Castro, and I like it. There is no attitude, there is pool and pinball and it is a neighborhood bar that I truly enjoy going to. I have never had anything less than a wonderful time here. Oh, and John the bartender is gorgeous and built. They do have one ornery bartender who is annoying, but other than him (and he is far outweighed by all the other staff and the customers who kick ass). I highly recommend. read more

The drinks are fine and cheap and the bartenders are nice. But at 1:45am my friends & I were thrown out very abruptly by a little bouncer with anger management issues, no apologies, even as we tried to explain we were only waiting for our friend to leave the bathroom. lately if i'm 'stuck' in the castro for whatever reason, i feel comfiest coming here, and most happy to plop down my dollars for that gigantic pour. i told the bartender yesterday evening that they've got the best pour in the city, and he was like 'you think so?,' all modest, standing there in front of that aquarium with tropical fish. there's a scruffy young bar back on whom all my friends have crushes. they also have my new favorite pinball game, theatre of magic. the eurotrash videos that are constantly playing can be a little draining, but they are very entertaining for the first few, for sure. that's my only complaint about moby dick... there's not much to keep you here for more than a couple drinks. a sort of regular guy, after-work crowd, nice and unpretentious, but soon enough it's time to (god those drinks were BIG and i'm DRUNK) move on to someplace sexier... read more

This is a great bar with hot men who don't look fake. Sunday afternoons are fun and the windows help it from being overly claustrophobic. It gets a bit too crowded though and the bathroom is a nightmare for anyone squeamish about public urination. read more
