Overall, the atmosphere and staff were fine, but the restroom experience was enough that I don't see myself coming back. There is an open urinal with no dividers and a mirror directly in front, which offered virtually no privacy. If you're someone who values even a basic level of privacy, be aware of that. There was one enclosed restroom that could have provided privacy, but it was occupied for an extended period because people were having sex inside. That left the open urinal as the only practical option. While my partner was using the urinal, another guy began engaging in sexual behavior directed toward him without his awareness. Once I pointed it out, we left immediately. It made us both very uncomfortable. I understand this is a gay bar and everyone has different expectations, but I believe customers should be able to use the restroom without feeling exposed or subjected to unwanted sexual behavior. Unfortunately, that experience overshadowed the rest of the evening. read more

Hell, I remember when this legendary bear spot was 'Daddy's'. That was back in the '90's when I was in the twilight of my cruising marketability. I don't think I was on a daddy hunt, in particular, but in hindsight, I would've been open to having a drink with someone who had a deep baritone, equally deep pockets, and gray in his temples. The reality was that I was a cheap date, and this was the watering hole to be cheap. Flash forward a few eons and here I was again still being cheap. Only I was definitely not on a daddy hunt. Who's your Daddy now? Or maybe more accurately, Grandpapa. In fact, some middle-aged twink out on the sidewalk called me Mr. Miyagi. But hey, I come here for the friendly, seasoned bartenders and the cheap drinks. 440 for me has a very important meaning. It's by far my favorite bar in SF and I even dare to say it's my second home in the most genuine and good way. When I say it's my second home I don't mean it's my drinking escape. I mean that's a second family I feel I have here in the US. It all started with Tony being the most supportive person when he didn't even realize he was going to; after a long term depression time back home in Brazil, I decided to move here, and he was literally the first person I talked to in SF, and he always made sure he'd make me feel extremely welcomed and accepted and loved inside 440. Days went by and he started introducing to the most part of the staff. Adam was the second person I started having conversations with. And then, obviously (like most of 440 customers), I fell in love with Adam's sense of humor and impeccable way to welcome you inside the bar and patience along the each shift. After that and few days I had already met and become acquainted to Jessie, Claudio, Levi, Sergio, John, Lil, Andy, Jim, Tyler, Heith and Michael (if I'm forgetting someone please forgive me) - these guys are amazing. All of them are extremely professional and beautiful souls. The way all of these guys I mentioned up here treat you and have you feeling in 440 is outstanding. Well done guys. You Rock! And Tony, you know how appreciative I am of having met you at my lowest, throughout you and all of these guys other guys I'm being able to reach my highest again. I love you guys. Been here a few times prior when visiting and I really like this place out of the other two I frequented during this trip (The Mix & Midnight Sun). As a matter of fact, we returned here as our last stop of the evening as the prices were unbeatable compared to the other two that I mentioned above as well the cocktails tasting much better (alcohol to base ratio). The bar has always been a good vibe until this experience. I do not recommend using the communal men's restroom. I had a random man try to remove my pants and inappropriately touch me in the bathroom without consent/ and told "no thanks" multiple times. The situation was reported to security, however the man (with a yellow beanie) was allowed to return inside by security because he was as "regular customer"... it doesn't matter what the case/place... no means no... Great bar located on the Castro strip. My friend had suggested we go there and hangout. What I liked about this bar, is it wasn't about being fabulous, it was chill, prices are low. Our friend has a crush on the bartender who likes to be topless, he would smile every time he'd look over at that chiseled torso. Word of advice for the locking bathroom. First let me start by saying I actually like this place. But tonight, the bouncer messed it up. I had a few drinks. I preface this because I figure most people reading it will understand. I told my friends I would be back and walked down the street and bought a couple of pizza slices. Why? Cause we've been drinking and it's the thing to do. So I tried to walk in and he stopped me and said couldn't. I asked why? As anyone would. And he said..."because I said so".. oh hell no! You do not say that to anyone. He continued to say "I said so", so I told him he's behaving like Fox News peeps and Trump and all he needed to say was "no outside food in the bar" and I would have accepted that. Also, put a god damn sign outside if that's the case. I ate a slice and gave the rest to the homeless people outside and then tried to walk in..empty handed. I was told I couldn't go in. I said my friends are in there and don't have signal and just want to tell them I'm out here. Denied again. So I stood outside of the door and waited for closing for my friends to come out. I liked 440 but will never, ever go back there (as if I could get in based on this guy) and will tell everyone I know not to go there while this guy works there. read more

ATMOSPHERE: It's a narrow, dark-walled, dimly lit bar with a few seats at the front, some in the middle and the majority towards the back. BEVERAGE: They have a full bar menu with good beer prices.
