DC has some law against selling used parts but not so, fair Mount Rainier -- the city actually donates the space to this volunteer-run effort. The co-op was founded by a bike whiz who still works the wrenches there and is eager to teach the nuts and bolts of bike repair to anyone who cares to listen. Service and parts a tad more expensive than Phoenix, but still quite reasonable, especially for DC cyclists used to paying a premium at stores in pricey neighborhoods like G-town or Adams Morgan. You can shop for parts and do your own repairs if you're so inclined. Didn't ask if they fix up bikes for sale as does Phoenix; call during their odd hours (Tue 6pm-8:30pm; Wed 6pm-9pm; Sun 1pm-5pm) for more info.

If you go and get hungry, you can easily walk to Compact Supermarket, a local corner store with two murals painted on the outside.

While the surgery itself appears to have gone well and Cali is doing fine, our experience surrounding her care and the follow-up afterward was deeply disappointing. When checking in, we were specifically asked whether Cali needed any vaccines. We clearly said no. The front desk staff even told us that her records indicated she did not need a rabies vaccine, as she had received her final rabies vaccination just three weeks earlier. When we picked Cali up, we were shocked to learn that she had been given another rabies vaccine anyway and that we had been charged for it. Mistakes can happen, but what has been most frustrating is what happened afterward. We asked to speak with a manager before leaving and were told none was available. Over the following week, we called four separate times and spoke with two receptionists, Emily and Beta, requesting a call from Crystal or Barbara. Despite being assured our concerns would be passed along, no one has ever returned our calls. ASPCA did offer us a credit for the cost of the unnecessary vaccine-$30, but we respectfully requested a reimbursement instead. To date, we have received neither a reimbursement nor any communication from management. We would have appreciated a simple phone call, an acknowledgment of the mistake, and a reasonable effort to resolve the issue.

Inside, there's a small gym, a basketball court, a computer lab, a rec room where movies are shown, and a soft play room for kids. Of the recreation centers that I've visited so far in DC, this fitness center is the most updated and well-kept. The crowd is pretty steady regardless of the time of day (I've been at different hours of the day and days of the week between 6:30AM-7:30PM) but I've never been able to not use equipment during my 45-60 minutes workouts. Note that the fitness center closes 30 minutes before the posted hours (I.e. if the rec center closes at 8PM, the fitness center closes at 7:30PM). Not pictured are also more weight machines, a dumbbell rack with weights 5-100lbs and kettlebells. Aside from the fitness center, there's also the athletic field, playground, rooftop garden, outdoor basketball/tennis courts, and a gymnasium. From what I've seen, events at this rec center are more-so geared towards folks under 18 and 55+.
