SUCH a amazing store!! Huge selection of all sizes of SO many model trains! Me and my son were there forever and we still never made it through all the things. We went again today and even found a whole section we'd missed the first time! The working model trains were so fun to watch too! And the owner/worker was so kind, so knowledgeable, and very helpful! If I had zero knowledge about model trains, I'd feel good just walking in to learn and get a set-up. He even had some Lego and duplo supplies (he said he'd sold out of Lego motorized trains but sells them and is getting more). He helped us pick out a small N scale that fit on a table and was so easy to just plug in, snap together, my 5 year old was doing it and able to build the track! Though he needs some help to get the train wheels on the track sometimes, but it's fantastic for his fine motor, problem solving, taking care of it is good for a sense of responsibility, and learning basic electrical wiring/engineering principles. The store also right by the Tex rail station! We made it a train day by riding Tex rail to downtown Grapevine for ice cream and pie, looking at the model train in the clock tower for ideas, then a ride to the model store! Such a great day, now tonight we're making houses, ducks, ponds from air dry clay and the scenery we bought from The Model Train Crossing. But seriously such a great store, an amazing place for kids! (And also for getting something that's 'for the kids' but secretly for you! :) ). I also saw tons of supplies that were clearly for experts, advanced sets! Fun to dream and will be fun to work up to that! read more

One of the last true train, hobby shops in the nation, and definitely a place to stop if you're in the DFW area. They are well stocked up on LGB, Lionel, Bachmann, and many other brands in every scale. I've become a repeat customer over the past two years, and I am always able to find what I need since they place a big priority on having inventory in the store browsing. They have fair prices, consistent with MSRP as well as several used items at good prices. When my almost 65 year old Lionel locomotive's coupler to the tinder (coal car) broke a couple of week's before Christmas I took it in for repair. I make it a point to buy first at Model Train Crossing and only go to the "net" if I absolutely must. This place has a lot of trains! New trains, used trains, z scale to g scale. I don't think I've seen a collection of trains this nice ever. A lot of stores concentrate on one scale. Model train crossing has every scale. I love looking at their g scale which they have on display above the shelves. Some really beautiful and high quality trains. The owner and operator is a really nice man with a different sense of humor, don't let that scare you. He's a real expert. I brought a o scale lionel steam engine in to get a new traction tire. He looked at it, knew exactly which set it was from and got me the new tire and should me how to install it. I love stopping in this store. read more

Unfortunately, Model Train Crossing exemplifies the drawbacks of attempting to keep purchases to local stores, specifically their reluctance to issue refunds. On December 18, 2010, we purchased $450 worth of supplies and a train from Model Train Crossing for my son's Xmas presents. On January 15, 2011 (e.g. within the 30 days), I returned to the store with $107 worth of supplies that we were not going to use. Buddy, who is the owner, flat out refused to accept the return of the supplies before I barely had a chance to step up to the counter. Despite having the original receipt and the fact that everything I was returning was either unused or unopened, he would only offer a store credit. When told this was unacceptable, he still would not budge, even though on their website (http://www.modeltraincrossing.com/index.html), there is no mention of "store credit" or "no returns" policy. I am sympathetic to small business owners, in fact I am employed by a small business. However, refusing to accept returns that meet all requirements (original receipt, unused/unopened merchandise, within 30 days) is not acceptable and in the long term, will likely lead to negative customer service for this business. I am currently pursuing this refund with both my credit card company and the Better Business Bureau, but just be forewarned that anything purchased at this store may indeed be a final sale. read more

If I could rate this with no stars I would. I remember ping to this place yrs ago when I was wanting to get into the model train buisness...I remember the owner being not the friendliest person I've met. I recently went in there looking for some stuff. I asked a question on if he had a product I needed and his response was "s**t, I don't know". He then followed me around the store in his wheel chair pretending I look at things when I know he was making sure I didn't steal anything...yes, a middle aged man holding a baby in a carrier is going to steal something...seeing that, I just left. It's worth driving an hour to another shop than to come back here again. Stay away! read more
