I was Very impressed with the care my Baby received today! They Truly Care about the Animal's, and it shows. I wasn't ready to spend the $200 for a year fee, but that changed quickly. Grateful for this new veterinarian center! Had the easiest time quickly booking an appointment with the app. No wait, front desk was super friendly, veterinarian's assistant was also friendly. Veterinarian was thorough and answered all my questions. I have been deeply frustrated with the vet center my senior chihuahua has been seeing for the past few years (terrible communication, impossible to get appointments, get prescriptions, etc), so this is a real god-send. This is the new era of veterinary clinics: modern, clean, efficient, easy to use with an app that keeps everything organized (you can order & access pet records easily). Super affordable too. This place is a dream. We have a brand new puppy, and I felt nervous about keeping her healthy and what I was supposed to be doing. Her first visit really put my mind to ease. What really impresses me is how friendly everyone is at the office - from the receptionist to the techs to the vet, everyone fawns over our puppy. She was so relaxed she didn't even whine when she got second shots today. I keep joking its like an HMO for dogs (in the best way!). They have an easy to use app that organizes all your information and makes it a breeze to book appointments and keep track of vaccinations, meds, etc. Plus the 24/7 chat service is great! Excellent for when you have a quick concern but don't need to go in. I even appreciate the transparent pricing - they go over everything with you in the room and there are no hidden fees. I strongly recommend the membership if you have a puppy - all your office visits are included! Its even next to a great coffee shop. Totally worth the drive from Oakland. read more

We highly recommend Modern Animal. They provide great care and makes things easy for their customers. When we moved to the area last year and when it was time for our precious senior cat, Wild Bill, to see a vet, we found it very difficult to get an appointment at other Berkeley area vet offices. Modern Animal made it easy to set up an account on their app and make appointments, whether at Berkeley or other offices throughout the Bay Area. All of their offices were clean and bright with lots of natural light. The vets and assistants were all kind and compassionate. As our Bill had many ailments and a sarcoma tumor, we often needed guidance and used the app to contact a medical professional 24/7. Were also able to find and make last minute appointments on the app too...although we may have needed to go to their other offices in Walnut Creek, Mill Valley, or SF. They always made Bill feel special and he got lots of Churus to get him through his exams. We were always given a choice about care options and charges before we paid a bill. And sadly, last week when we euthanized Bill, I was able to use the app to communicate with his care team about end of life decisions. They were all good to Bill and we are very grateful to Modern Animal for that. read more

What a lovely place to bring my very scared little dachshund-chihuahua mix... she's 12 years old and has developed a serious fear of vet clinics. They were very, very patient with her and came up with strategies for our next visit (when they'll hopefully actually be able to examine her - she was too freaked out on this first visit), and were very helpful with providing a dose of flea & tick meds which I wasn't able to get elsewhere without an exam. The vet and vet tech were so kind and welcoming, the front desk had treats and a big smile, and I am very glad I decided to try out Modern Animal! We'll be going back! read more

I am sooooo happy with Modern Animal. We moved to Berkeley 13 years ago but had continued going to San Francisco SPCA Veterinary Hospital. The pandemic changed all of that when weekend appointments became impossible to get. We finally moved our pets' (3 cats and a dog) care over to Berkeley Dog and Cat Hospital. BDCH has its advantages but it is not the care, concern and thoroughness we are accustomed to. I won't go into the costs! Very recently, we signed our pup Biz up for Modern Animal and shortly thereafter he experienced a GI issue as he is prone to have occasionally. This GI occurrence was lasting longer than those in the past so we decided to take him in. Getting the appointment was easy and the care we received from the moment we walked in the door was impeccable. It was a calm environment which is super helpful with a pup who gets very nervous going to the vet. Modern Animal is a great find in our community. read more

I am writing to express my deep dissatisfaction with the Modern Animal Vet Clinic and its membership policy, which is a money trap. I was unaware of the automatic renewal of the annual membership, which needed to be clearly communicated to me. I find this Modern Animal Vet Clinic and its staff could be more experienced with animals, and this membership is a method of money trap.  I made a mistake on June 20, 2023. I signed up for a one-year membership and immediately changed my mind because I had no idea about it. I wanted to try them just once and see if I liked them. They refuse to change from a one-year membership to a pay-as-you-go and tell me I must wait one year. I was terribly busy and so stressed, and a year went by, and they just billed me for another year of membership without my consent.   On June 21, 2023, I brought my cat (15 years old) for teeth cleaning, and the vet told me she was too old and suggested having a blood test for any other health problem.  I agreed to do it, but it was a disaster. Two vet nurses cannot handle the blood draw because they lack experience.   The Vet clinic should know how to draw blood from uncooperative cats.  I do not think any cat will nicely cooperate with the blood draw.  The vet prescribed the sedative to give to my cat before the next time I bring my cat to the clinic for a blood test. I have had many cats for the last 30 years and have never had this poor experience at a vet clinic. This visit cost me another $193.59 plus a one-year membership, $199, a total of $392.59 for a check-up, a prescription for sedative and ear solution, and cleaning ears. I never wanted to go back there. The following is the email communication. I asked Modern Animal to refund $119 ($199 annual membership--$80 fee for a one-time clinic visit). Modern Animal wanted to refund me, but It couldn't. k: I made mistake to sign up so I emailed to change to pay as you go a year ago. You can not accept that? This ( ) auto annual membership is a scam practice to make money. M: Again, you were not charged the fee, and have been switched to a Pay as you go membership. I have included the screenshot below of the transaction history. Please know that I am trying my best to be helpful. I'd like to continue this conversation, but you'll need to communicate respectfully and in accordance with our community guidelines. I can certainly refund $119 to the card tyo paid your membership wth last year, on 6/20/23, which would be the $199 fee- the $80 pay as you Exam fee. I have a bit of a mixed experience here. We've made a couple of visits and the staff are great and helpful. I'll also say that using the app is a pleasure (finding records and even chatting with them if needed). That said, when it came time for our pet's neuter appointment, they don't do that at this office and so we have to go to either Walnut Creek or Mill Valley. I would definitely recommend Modern Animal, but it's not clear to me what procedures can be done in the Berkeley office. (UPDATE - As of 6/17, nobody has reached out to me so, I guess not sure what to say about that) read more

Finally--a veterinarian's office that actually loves animals! I booked a day-of appointment for my dog to see what kind of illness he was dealing with, and upon arrival, we were met with lots of smiles and treats. They even gave my dog a lick mat with some almond butter on it to keep him entertained while standing still. We ended up having to get a blood panel done for my dog, and I was so impressed with and grateful for the staff's genuine kindness and patience throughout the drawing process. After so many downright awful experiences at other veterinary clinics, I'm thrilled to find a place like this that caters to pets and people alike. The membership fee was very worth it to me, and my dog and I will definitely be returning to Modern Animal as our regular veterinary clinic. Thanks so much, y'all! :) read more

Modern Animal is the Beverly Hills of vets. I just joined at the NoPa location in San Francisco a few months ago and have had two visits(the second time at their Berkeley location because I wanted a day of appointment)with my dog Olive. They are so kind, attentive, thorough and helpful. Olive has never been so calm when getting shots, examined and temperature taken up her back side. As a furry parent, you are offered a beverage at checkin and sit for your appointment in a very stylishly(think Dwell magazine)decorated waiting room. Once in an exam room, they encourage you to stay engaged with your pet during their assessment and procedures to keep them feeling safe and calm. Both Dr Newhouse and Wu were personable and professional. The positive affirmations and sweetness from especially the two assistants(Di at Berkeley and I can't remember his name at NoPa) Olive had were truly remarkable. I would suggest that the assistant's names be included on your visit record to be able to give a personal shout out to them. They are pricey(probably around a third more than my last vet), which at other points in my life would have been prohibitive(and unfortunately may be for others), but at this point in my life I can afford it. As far as Modern Animal, you get what you pay for. Olive is 12 and I've decided I'm going to give her the cream of the crop care. My peace of mind and hers are worth it. read more

this place is a real gift, they charge an annual fee and then you can connect to a vet for free in person or remote, and they are very transparent on the price of every procedure or medication. In this area there was really the need for a place like this, with vet clinics that respond the phone and they tell you you can go see them after three months. I recommend 100% to anyone who is a new pet owner or is unhappy with their present vet, which I assume is the case for many these days read more
