The vet spent under 10 minutes with our cat. Without even touching him, she said "he seems fine to me, but come back if it continues". The issue had already been going on for a few months, so I was confused why she wouldn't just address the issue while we were there. I asked for a blood test and two vet techs (not wearing gloves) poked my cat with the needle and couldn't seem to find the vein. My cat wasn't hissing or biting, only growling when poked with a needle. After a few minutes one of the vet techs says "I guess he doesn't want his blood taken" and told me I should just come back another time. It seemed like they had no clue how to take a cat's blood. I found it weird I was told twice to just come back later when I was at a scheduled appointment. I paid $80 to have my time wasted. I went to a different vet and my cat had a thyroid issue, which could've been treated earlier if this vet had felt like doing their job. Overall a weird and disappointing experience. read more

Amazing experience from first visit, they did everything they could to make us feel comfortable, supported and happy. They went beyond our expectations, staff super kind and friendly. We've been at Modern Animal since 2018 and it's easily the best veterinary experience we've ever had. Our animals have had procedures with anesthesia, in addition to wellness visits, and we've felt well supported and confident in the excellent medical staff. The app, the ease in booking, the prompt and clear communication, the friendly and gentle approach with our pets, it's all consistently great. Plus, the ability to text a nurse 24/7 is amazing. After I posted my 1 Star review, I was contacted by Dr. Jessie Hamilton, the Medical Director of Modern Animal. She assured me that they took my concerns seriously and would run an internal review. She also asked if I would give Modern Animal a second chance. She recommended Dr. Richard Yi at the Studio City location, where she took her own pets. I repeated I could not afford everything in the $1915 estimate but I wanted to do some of the things and be proactive about making Juju better. She understood and went through several things and recommended what should be done first. The appointment was for the following week and Juju, my cat, was getting so bloated her back legs were struggling to hold her up, she couldn't clean herself, she couldn't even jump on the couch. Juju and I checked into Studio City at 7:45am and they were planning to observe her for the whole day. Kirsten, who checked us in, said Dr. Yi would be able to chat with me around 10 am after spending time observing Juju, but he was able to meet with me at 9am. Dr. Yi went through all the things that we could do but suggested we start with an ultrasound and fluid removal and if I could also afford x-rays, it would help him determine if there were any abnormal growths inside her. I could afford all this so we had an official game plan. Dr. Yi and his team removed almost 600 ml of fluids from Juju, that's a large can of beer! It took all day, my brave girl handled it without sedatives, which I did approve they could use if she needed some. Dr. Yi and Kirsten stayed in touch with me via Chat to keep me updated throughout the day. They finished with Juju at 6pm. Dr. Yi came and explained next steps and suggested two different scenarios of what we can do in the future. Dr. Yi is a very dedicated veterinarian, he explained things to me in a clinical way but also told me what he would do if Juju was his cat. All along, he checked to make sure I understood everything he was talking about. He also listened to what I said and actually heard me, that's an important skill beyond having medical expertise. Juju is now on medication to see if that will effectively treat the root of the problem. Fingers crossed and then some this will solve the bloating and bring her back to a healthier state. Juju can now do some of the things she used to love doing. She can't make it onto the dinner table yet but she can jump on the couch. And kudos to Denise, the vet tech who brought Juju to me at the end of the night. I had already paid but Denise offered to clean Juju for me and trimmed her nails at no extra charge. read more

The staff is friendly and booking appointments is convenient. The facility is super clean and if you have an animal that is young or does it have a lot of medical issues. It is great. If you have an animal that is older or needs more care this is not the place. Our cat has a thyroid issue. They overdosed him on medication that caused his liver to shut down. And when he was dying, the doctor seeing stop being responsive. I had to get confrontational with them for us to get the care that we needed. We ended up taking him to the emergency facility. After his whole debacle, he had chronic diarrhea. They had us run a bunch of expensive tests to find that he has a slightly higher level of toxins and bacteria in his stool. They refused to give a antibiotic to treat it despite my multiple request. I ended up having to take him to a specialty internist $$$ to get the antibiotics, which cured him. Now he's fine. I will only take him to the specialty internist for his care going forward. The Modern Animal doctors are very kind, for the most part, but they are young, overconfident, and somewhat unexperienced. You're rolling the dice to find a good reliable doctor there. Claire Samuelson is great. read more

After being with Modern Animal for 8 months now I want to give an updated review. I always book appointments with Dr.Maynard she is so welcoming and patient our appointment on two occasions ran 1 hour long and not once did I feel rushed as trying to get treatment done on my 4 year old dog or getting answers to my questions. The receptionists are always so welcoming and offer beverages they have in their fridge. Now today I took my dog for her first ever teeth cleaning and it felt so reassuring to know I could always message the team for an update. They messaged me with updates for example when they took my dog out of the kennel for a potty break and when they finished with x-rays and when they begun the procedure. Before they can do a teeth cleaning they have to run a screening panel to make sure your baby will do well under Anesthesia. The cost was $222 for that alone I know pretty pricy. Now after the results come back and all is well now we can move forward to the actual dental Procedure they have given me the estimate for just the Canine dental package which includes the procedure time, dental sealant , anesthesia , induction drugs , rimadyl (injectable) , cerina (medication) , anal glands, 500ml fluid solution, dental radiology etc. Now this comes with a price range from $767-$1014 for a level 1. Then for a level 2 dental package it is significantly more expensive ranging from $1402.53-$1776.03. This being the reason I wont give that 5th star. Other vets charge Significantly cheaper but I just love the environment at modern animal that I am basically paying for peace of mind. A friend of mine had her dogs teeth cleaning and two teeth extractions for $768 then again depends where you go. If this is to pricey for you I recommend going else where for teeth cleanings but really love this vet for everything else they do a very good job on their services. On another occasion Dr. Wai took out a foxtail from my Aggressive dog and was so patient and did not give up and resort to putting her to sleep to take it out. read more

So after my review, they got in contact with me and were super helpful in terms of getting things sorted out. I've brought my dog in for two visits so far - one in Pasadena and one in Studio City. I'll say, I've been impressed. My dog is TERRIFIED of the vet, historically. They were super patient with him and the whole experience felt really good. From the easy to navigate app to cold brew in the lobby (which is easier than most to navigate with a nervous pooch) to the layout of the exam rooms, it feels like a premium experience. The prices for treatment are a little higher than I'd expected - ends up being about what I'd spent at my previous vet but that included the cost of the visit. At the end of the day, the experience for me and my dog is worth it. read more

I updated my last review since I believed in them and the compassion they gave in reaching out to me, so much so that I signed up my second cat to them to give it another try. I scheduled an appointment at 2 weeks out, which seems to be their standard wait time, and the NIGHT before my appointment, I get told through their chat app- not a phone call- that the appointment has been canceled "due to unforeseen circumstances". When I asked why and what I am to do moving forward as I don't want to have to wait ANOTHER 2 weeks, I was ghosted. I must just be...so....extremely unlucky with this place, but it's clear now that it really isn't the place for me. I'm asking for a full refund on both my cats as the consistent frustrations are not worth it and I'll take them to a place that can actually be reliable. read more

I am so happy that i found Modern Animal and am so grateful for Dr Lam and the veterinarian tech (her name is escaping me right now) -- for their care and time walking me through Bagel's health and treatment plan. I have a senior dog and his care requires lots of questions and specialist referrals. It can get confusing and scary and Modern Animal made me feel so good about how to proceed with his care. I'm long over due for a review. If you're looking for a vet that actually talks to you and not lectures you this is the place to go. I recently adopted a rescue and brought him to this vet. He was very nervous and was a bit rowdy with the other dogs. The vet tech, front desk, and Drs were so kind and patient. I had been making back to back schedule becuase of my dogs allergies. With every visits it's gotten better. My big reason giving this place a five star is my dog had an emergency. He had a foxtail in his paw. We didn't catch it earlier and I was pretty stressed. I used their app to chat with a vet tech. They were booked for urgent care in the Pasadena location but was able to get me to the studio city location next day. After visiting the studio city location they did see he had something in his play. They were able to schedule an operation on Sunday morning (the next couple days) and they were able to take it out! Oh one more big thing. They also do happy visits! Where you can take in your dog and have them visit the facility and be handled and given treats. My dog has a favorite vet tech now. Since my dog has been visiting this place so much he's gotten use to it and isn't as nervous. Thank you modern animal for a wonderful experience. I cannot recommend this place enough! read more

The vet care is excellent, the business model is abhorrent. They won't refill a prescription for an ear infection they diagnosed last month, and they cannot seem to understand where we live and what clinic we attend. Three appointments have been made by the staff that are more than an hour from our home. The yearly membership seems to cover very little, and we have been charged and charged. This place is top class. First off, the digital savviness of this vet is superb. Their app is genius and makes it easily transparent for me to stay informed about my dogs medical history and upcoming appointments. All other vets need to step it up because handwritten paperwork and outdated "we'll email you back" online forms are a thing of the past. I've only been in once to get vaccinations, but the facilities and people at this clinic took care of my dogs like champs. Everyone working here was detailed, careful, and mindful of everything they needed to do while onboarding me to a new vet. The annual membership business model makes so much sense, I'll never be reluctant to visit the vet if something comes up to avoid paying exam/consultation fees. When I explained that was why we were late, the host and vet tech showed little to no sympathy, did not ask if she needed water or the restroom and did not show any grace...our dog went unseen by the doctor and we were told to make an appointment for the next day. My cat was barely eating and rapidly losing weight and I knew something was wrong with her but my old vet did some basic bloodwork which looked normal and told me to just try feeding her more. I decided to go somewhere else as a second opinion and I am so glad I did. Dr. Abdel Massih at Modern Animal ran some additional blood tests and suggested a diet trial and B12 injections for possible inflammatory bowel disease and it has completely saved my cat. She's eating again, has more energy, and has put on weight. The staff here are absolutely amazing and treat my kitties with such compassion and care that I couldn't imagine taking my cats anywhere else. I don't know how to start. I'm amazed with this vet clinic for so many reasons. They treat our pets like they are family. The care is very good and thorough, they work hard to make sure not only my dog but I comfortable every time I go there. The facility is very clean and all the staff is extremely friendly. Their app is amazing. You can reach a live person 24/7, When Milo my dog had to be sedated to have the microchip implanted they made sure (per my request) that I was next to him from beginning to the end. Being with my four paws son during any given visit and treatment is imperative and they deliver that. Having all my dog's data on my phone (vaccinations records, treatments etc) is really convenient. Their membership is a must. But the cherry on the top was today. I'm taking Milo (my service dog) in cabin to Brasil and the health paper work required to enter Brasil is insane and needs endorsement from the USDA. Sarah C. (virtual pet host) made sure I had all the forms, paper work done property weeks before so I could receive the health certificate before the trip. USDA was really backed up and a day before the trip (today) I still didn't have the certificate. The amount of stress I was going through was surreal that's when the office manager Tabitha Backer (RVT) took over and made sure she was top of this. In a few hours I got the certificate. As someone who worked in the veterinary field for over 4 years, I thought finding a new vet who fits my standards was gonna be a lengthy process. Luckily for me, tho, modern animal came through and made my life a lot easier than I was expecting! My dog was seen by Dr. Trujillo who was gentle, careful, and had great bedside manner with my pup. My dog is pretty docile and tolerates the vet well to begin with, but I could tell everyone from the doctor and the tech team prioritized fear-free handling. My dog doesn't have any major health concerns and just needed a basic exam to establish care for her skin allergy medication prescription so my time with the vet was pretty straightforward and simple, but Dr. Trujillo still took her time to thoroughly do a nose to tail exam and answer any questions I had. The techs, Jessica, Izzy and the trainee who was shadowing her were all incredible as well! They make everything for the owner so convenient - especially with their virtual care. Not to mention, the design of their app is actually so satisfying to work with!!! You can tell they're invested in their marketing and making the vet experience as seamless as possible for the humans that come thru their doors. I've lived in Pasadena for 3 years now and have been regularly seeking a good veterinarian in the area since my longtime vet is an hour drive away since moving. I have gone to multiple different vets and thought that I would give Modern Animal a try since the LA location has such stellar reviews. I was initially intrigued by the idea of paying only $100 per year and having all exam fees waived. However, it turns out that the optional procedures are much more expensive as a result and really don't make up for the savings in exam fees. I brought my dog in to see about having her teeth cleaned and some teeth extracted, as well as having a few small masses looked at. Teeth: I asked if they have a dedicated dentist or if they do the dental work themselves. My vet stated that all the veterinarians there are trained to do teeth work. This to me was concerning as I would rather have my dog's teeth treated by someone who exclusively does dental work as opposed to a veterinarian that occasionally does teeth. The veterinarian that saw my dog seemed very young, in her mid twenties, and while I'm sure she has gone to veterinary school and received training in dental work there, I have a hard time believing that she would be able to perform dental work with the expertise of someone who only treats dental cases. While that may be perfectly fine for her to learn on my dog, the price for the procedure absolutely did not justify that fact. I took my dog to my "old" vet in Ontario for a second opinion and the quote I received was dramatically less and they use a dedicated pet dentist who has been in the field for many years. Modern Animal Estimate: $1490-1610 Ontario Vet Hosp. Estimate: $572 Masses: The vet looked at the masses that I showed her and she didn't seem to have a good idea as to what they were. She suggested sending in biopsies to determine if they were cancerous. The quote I received just to have the biopsies analyzed was $550. Now, when I took my dog to my old vet, he said the cost for a biopsy would be $250, but he recommended that I not bother with it because the masses were too small and would likely not be large enough to get good samples from even if the whole of the masses were sent in. Modern Animal Estimate: $1,068 Ontario Vet Hosp. Estimate: $322 (w/o biopsy) It's pretty outrageous that having my dog seen by very young vets, who are newer to the field, charge three times the cost as a veteran in the field who sources experts for specialty work like dental care. I appreciated all the treats that they gave my dog, which kept the experience more positive for her while in an otherwise stressful environment. I would recommend Modern Animal for a person with a new puppy or a first time dog owner who can really utilize the frequent exam visits covered by the membership that don't require scheduling surgery or other procedures. I don't think I will continue coming here for my senior dogs but will probably enroll my puppy, since puppies have a tenancy to get themselves into trouble in ways that shouldn't require great expertise. I love Modern Animal so much. They only have 54 reviews at the time I'm writing this so I hope that this helps spread the word so they can keep their services going for a long time. Every staff member, from nurses to doctors to support, is super warm, helpful, and competent. I didn't realise how useful the element of virtual care was until I started needing it--my dog's getting older, and that comes with a lot of anxiety. No matter how many questions I ask the nurses in the chat, they always answer quickly and help us determine next steps for some peace of mind. They are literally there for you in the chat 24/7. There are a number of great vet clinics in the area and you can't go wrong in terms of finding a doctor who will love your pet, but Modern Animal's process is the most streamlined and saves some hassle in terms of the menial stuff that can make a visit to the vet frustrating (everything, from check-in to payment, lives in the app, and their late policy to keep things running makes sure you're not waiting around to be seen even after you arrive). What an amazing place! Today I took my 8-week old puppy to the vet for the first time and I am SO HAPPY I chose Modern Animal for him. Every single person that works there is amazing and so nice. Ralph (my puppy!) loved every moment of it (and all the cuddles and attention he got!). The place looked impeccable and was warm and welcoming which put me at ease and also Ralph. Dr. Maynard was AMAZING!!! She was so nice and helped me understand some things about puppyhood I didn't know! You can tell she really loves her job and is very intelligent -- she even looked in Ralph's ear (not all the way) and his eyes, so he would be used to it for the next time etc. I also loved the way the payment worked (we had to do some medicine) - you get an estimate before you pay/agree to anything and have to approve it before they do it! Brought my dog in for his first exam last week, and what a stellar experience! It felt totally different from our normal vet. The clinic lobby was so nicely designed and the staff really went out of their way to make me feel comfortable. When my dog pooped right there in the exam room, they didn't even blink - just cleaned it up immediately, and told me not to worry. Plus, they were great at explaining everything throughout the visit, and gave me estimates for their recommendations up front, wow.
