Happy visit so Chloe's association at clinic can make her feel more safe
    Connie L.

My dog Chloe was rescued from a puppy mill in Korea, and I adopted her at 8 years old (she's now 12). Because of her past, she has a hard time trusting people and can be a bit spicy at the vet--but the team at Modern Animal has been incredible with her. They're patient, caring, and truly understand her needs. They've even found simple ways to help her feel safe, like bundling her in a blanket and covering her eyes during shots. Chloe needed yearly dental surgeries due to years of neglect, but thanks to Dr. Maynard and now Dr. Samuelson, her health has improved so much--her most recent procedure didn't require a single tooth extraction. They also caught a mammary mass early that turned out to be cancerous, and because it was removed quickly, it was completely eliminated. The entire team--including virtual care--is responsive, supportive, and always goes the extra mile, even following up after ER visits. As a first-time dog mom, I'm so grateful for the care they've given Chloe over the years.

Waiting for the vet tech...aka treat person!

We have taken our dog here for the past four years and we we love the efficiency and care they have shown our dog. Whether it's routine check ups or emergency visits we have to found that, most of the time, booking appointments have not been an issue. Their app is quite nice to book appointments and also accept invoice. We haven't had a trouble with getting persecriptions for our dog's medications or getting insurance claims approved which is nice too. Lastly, or perhaps most importantly, our dog loves coming here because they definitely are not frugal when it comes to giving dog's treats. To say that our dog enjoys coming here would be an understatement. Lastly, the drinks for the humans ain't bad as well.

I just have to say, as a new dog parent but long time lover of dogs and family that grew up with them, I'm so thankful for the quick, down to earth, supportive, and straightforward care Modern Animal has offered to me and my pup. We joined after i adopted him and knowing that he was a rescue, i was aware his first ever dental and wellness visit would be on the more costly side because he had been neglected. The quote they gave was super helpful and luckily he was on the lowest end of the spectrum. His teeth look tremendously better after his first ever dental appointment with Dr. Compton and he seems a lot happier!! I tried cleaning them at home but like most dogs, the only way to clean up all the built up plaque and tartar was through anesthesia and delicate cleaning from his Dr. During his dental appointment day the staff couldn't have been more communicative and kind to my little one! At this point it seems like he's going to love going to the vet knowing he'll get cuddled and cared for all day. He healed up so well over the weekend and didn't seem to need the pain meds they gave us just in case. I loved being told exactly what they were for and what to expect as well. The whole process was wonderful and my pup seemed to think so too even when we picked him up and he was coming out of anesthesia. He seemed totally back to normal the next day too! When i grew up going to vet appointments with our family dogs, i saw how frustrating and confusing it could be for both animals and humans. I hoped that when i was able to have a dog it would be a little less so. I can confidently say you absolutely get the care you pay for here. Im also thankful for dog insurance that i purchased before finding a vet and am so happy to be able to provide my pup with what he deserves- nothing but the best. From the on demand texting support i have gotten in the app when i send them messages after hours asking "is this normal? Or should i be worried?" to the staff at the Pasadena location who have been so kind and helpful to my fur baby and teaching me what to expect throughout each visit, I can't recommend it enough. What other vet is going to be this clean, calm, friendly, helpful, knowledgeable, available and send you messages with pictures about updates during your rescue dog's first big dental visit??? I love Modern Animal and I'm pretty sure my lil guy does too!

    Shiro during his first visit

The team at Modern Animal is truly amazing. Sadly we had to say goodbye to our cat, Shiro (through an independent at-home service). But before that, we were in and out of this clinic several times. Every visit the staff showed incredible care and compassion. They helped express our cat's bladder when he became paralyzed and couldn't urinate on his own, and they took such gentle care of both him and me during our quality-of-life consultation. Even after our Shiro passed, the Modern Animal Pasadena team went above and beyond by sending flowers and a card to our home. It means so much to us. We're so grateful for everything they did and couldn't have asked for a more caring, supportive group of veterinarians and staff. Also the Glendale location and online chat team were kind and attentive, but I want to give a special shout-out to this location for their exceptional compassion and support.

When I first moved to Pasadena I was looking for a new vet and wanted to bring my dog here, but unfortunately they were at capacity and not taking new patients. Thankfully I was finally able to come here and I can see why they're so busy! I have gone to multiple vets here and have never been dissatisfied with my experience. All the employees here have been super kind and attentive to my dog which makes me feel comfortable when I have to leave him for a drop-off appointment. The online chat is also a great feature and is super convenient, and also just being able to see all of my dog's documents on the app is great as well. They have free parking in the back and there is also a paid lot next to it as well which makes them easy to access especially being on Colorado. The facility is always super clean and they have complimentary drinks! Can't recommend Modern Animal enough.

Unfortunately, our experience left a very poor & unprofessional first impression. AFTER ALL WE ARE PAYING FOR A SERVICE!! Upon arrival, we encountered a sign at the front desk that was extremely condescending and immediately gave the impression of a business more interested in enforcing rules than treating patients with respect. There is a 10-minute grace period that is not clearly communicated beforehand, and if you are even slightly late, the clinic threatens to cancel your appointment and charge a late fee. We were only about five minutes late due to a long line and parking delays, yet we were told our appointment was canceled and a late fee would be applied. The staff at the front desk were dismissive and RUDE AF!!!! , particularly one woman who seemed to enjoy asserting power over patients. She even hung up abruptly on a caller saying, "I'll call you back, I'm busy." When we requested to speak to the manager, the response was only slightly better, still condescending, and we were reprimanded for explaining the situation. It felt very much like being treated as children rather than valued clients. For a clinic that presumably cares for animals, this lack of empathy, patience, and basic courtesy was courtesy was shocking. If you're treating your HIGH PAYING CLIENTS THIS BAD!? HOW ARE YOU TREATING OUR BELOVED ANIMALS? YIKES. The behavior at the front desk, combined with the aggressive sign, makes it very difficult to feel comfortable or welcome. We hope the owners and doctor are made aware of this, as staff attitude can seriously affect a clinic's reputation and patient loyalty. We are reconsidering whether to continue using this clinic and strongly encourage owners particularly more than poor management to retrain front desk staff on professionalism and compassion. Patients who spend significant amounts on pet care deserve to be treated with respect and understanding (especially during their first visit) Once this behavior is put on social platforms such as Yelp, Google. Even tik tok you will suffer greatly by allowing your front desk to abuse your clientele? What an absolute embarrassment. Take your disgusting signs down before you go viral.

I triple checked our text chain, phone log, emails, and even PetDesk - none of which have anything from Rosey before our appointment on 3/3. Naturally, I questioned the additional charge (there was already a USDA fee that I paid for on the original invoice) and mentioned that I had no correspondence from Rosey leading up to the appointment. I received such a condescending and accusatory email back from her and was essentially told she would not help me in the future. I'm still waiting to connect with management and share screenshots showing that Rosey never reached out to me before our appointment. I appreciated his further reassurance that it was the correct decision and at the right time when he saw the gravity of Xena's condition; I had no doubts, but it was still a balm to my heart to hear it from a professional. I was able to pet her throughout the entire procedure and up until the very last moment we assisted her onto the stretcher. I am so grateful I could spend those crucial final moments comforting her. We preferred communal cremation, so the rates were within the ballpark of other at-home services I had consulted with. However the stellar attentiveness, gentleness, and empathy that Dr. Kevin provided, in addition to his same-day availability on such short notice and all of the glowing reviews here, had my heart set on him from the beginning. Our beloved dog died and they were so sympathetic. They sent us a condolence card right after drop off. The price was reasonable, the turn around time prompt and the pickup material was so touching. Everything from canvas bag to the remains, the card, the paw print - it was perfect. They gave us plenty of time to say goodbye at drop off. They even brought her back to us on a blanket. On pickup we arrive right as they were closing but they waiting a few minutes after so as to not have to wait another day. We plan to bring our other three doggies for checkups as our experience was so positive. The whole atmosphere inside is lovely, from their x-mas countdown, the drawings on the bulletin board, the exam rooms are some of the nicest I've seen. We haven't been paid for the praise nor are we related to the business in anyway.

They are not my personal vet, and will never be. They serviced dogs that I fostered through a reputable agency. The animal that I brought in was a hospice foster that was in my home for over a year, and I was told I could hold her while she was euthanized. The rescue had called ahead with the details and I gave them the dog, but they then ignored me for two hours. The receptionist was extremely rude and condescending and would not let me talk to anyone about the situation. I begged for two hours to talk to the vet, and she kept treating me like I was wasting her time. In the meantime, my foster was in a crate in the back of the building. I finally got to talk to a vet on the phone after the two-hour wait, and she told me "Ok, we'll put her to sleep"!! I was agonized and told her that I was supposed to be with the dog during this process. At this point, I had been weeping for two hours and just wanted to hold my foster. Another 45 minutes went by, and I was told to meet them outside the back of the building. While I was sitting there, I could hear employees in the back room laughing and making fun of clients. Rats were running back and forth across the fence. It was dark when the process finally happened, and I was able to go home. It was absolutely the worst experience at a veterinary hospital in my years of fostering. I wrote a letter detailing the ordeal to the vet manager. An apology was issued to the rescue, but never to me. Having to euthanize a pet is a devastating experience. They made it ten times worse than it had to be. My heart goes out to anyone who has been treated like this by this hospital

I want to preface my review by stating that my issue is with one particular veterinarian in this…read moreoffice. Everyone else I encountered were very pleasant. And honestly, I'm not one to normally write reviews, but after reading one of the vets notes in the record for my cat, I feel compelled to do so. My cat experienced a health emergency last year and was diagnosed with an illness that I had never heard of (FIP) in all of my years of pet ownership. I was understandably upset, but at my initial visit Dr. Darren was awesome and gave me a breakdown of what needed to be done to treat my cat. Unfortunately, my follow up visit was with Dr. Allsup, who seemed nice enough, but I sensed an underlying condescension in the way she spoke to me. I dismissed it because I was overly emotional due my cat being ill, but I came to realize that I was correct in my assumption. I called today to request my cats records and after reading her notes of our conversations I am extremely disheartened by some of her wording. Based on my subsequent research on FIP and the conversation with Dr. Darren I was fully aware of the fact that getting the medication was very time sensitive and I was doing everything possible to obtain it. I was not aware that making repeated comments about my finances/financial situation were a necessary part of medical notation. She made note of the fact that I did not live in the area (don't know why this was necessary to note) and mentioned more than once that I was not financially able to do all the testing they wanted to perform. And for some reason she felt adamant about me getting the medication from Stokes, instead of me seeking a more financially feasible option. When I advised that I would be getting the medication from Chewy, her response, and I quote, "O found the drug on Chewy.com. A/O that I was not aware that Chewy.com could make the drug and I have always gone through Stokes. I am not sure what Chewy.com offers would even work." My cat thankfully responded very well to the medication from Chewy and was pretty much back to being himself within 2 weeks, despite doubts of it not working sufficiently. Stokes pharmacy quoted me $600 for one bottle of GS medication, and I would have need 2 bottles that would equal $1200. Thankfully there were alternatives for procuring the medication and I chose Chewy because I trust them as a company and it was more affordable- $150 per bottle. I find it alarming that the most expensive option would be the one recommended, especially considering she seemed to be so concerned about my lack of finances. And why would a veterinarian not be aware that this medication is being compounded at other pharmacies? Bova/Stokes may have been the original developer but just like in pharmaceuticals for humans' other companies eventually will manufacture their own formula of a drug. I obviously cannot interpret her tone via her writing, but the way everything was written came across to me as very condescending. It may be that detailed notes are required which I can understand but noting (multiple times) my lack of ability to pay at that time I do not think is necessary unless I was stating outright that I was not going to buy the medicine at all. This was a very emotional situation for me as I'm sure it would be for most pet owners and her notes convey a lack of empathy to say the least. Despite me not living in the area if I ever visit this office again, I will most certainly make an appointment with any of the veterinarians other than Dr. Allsup.

Putting a dog into cargo is very stressful for the dog and the owner. They helped us a lot with obtaining the special FDA paperwork, and this was during a time there was some issue with the FDA system and no one online seemed to be able to get their forms in time. All the staff were very helpful. We were confused about the forms and Tommy made several calls to various agencies trying to get us the right information. He even offered us a refund if we needed to go to another vet to get a different form, which we didn't. Michelle helped us with our form and Jason helped us adjust Brandi's meds for the flight. I must admit that at first I thought the visit was expensive, but flying with a dog in cargo is very complicated and I'm not sure we would have gotten it together without all this post visit follow up. It would have been much more complicated and expensive had there been no way to simply "text" our vet because I would have had to see another vet. So not only are they great people, but their system makes it easy to communicate with the office after your visit. The other thing I like is how easy it is to get an appt with your vet. Being able to make an appt after work is really awesome. Oh yes, our vet was very nice and caring and understood our dog and her breed. She didn't know we needed a travel form and worked together with the other vet to get Brandi seen by someone who had the credential to sign the form that Alaska Airlines required. Air travel is just so confusing and stressful and we had to deal with so many people and they all made this emergency trip possible. Next time I'll hopefully be driving
