I just have to say, as a new dog parent but long time lover of dogs and family that grew up with them, I'm so thankful for the quick, down to earth, supportive, and straightforward care Modern Animal has offered to me and my pup. We joined after i adopted him and knowing that he was a rescue, i was aware his first ever dental and wellness visit would be on the more costly side because he had been neglected. The quote they gave was super helpful and luckily he was on the lowest end of the spectrum. His teeth look tremendously better after his first ever dental appointment with Dr. Compton and he seems a lot happier!! I tried cleaning them at home but like most dogs, the only way to clean up all the built up plaque and tartar was through anesthesia and delicate cleaning from his Dr. During his dental appointment day the staff couldn't have been more communicative and kind to my little one! At this point it seems like he's going to love going to the vet knowing he'll get cuddled and cared for all day. He healed up so well over the weekend and didn't seem to need the pain meds they gave us just in case. I loved being told exactly what they were for and what to expect as well. The whole process was wonderful and my pup seemed to think so too even when we picked him up and he was coming out of anesthesia. He seemed totally back to normal the next day too! When i grew up going to vet appointments with our family dogs, i saw how frustrating and confusing it could be for both animals and humans. I hoped that when i was able to have a dog it would be a little less so. I can confidently say you absolutely get the care you pay for here. Im also thankful for dog insurance that i purchased before finding a vet and am so happy to be able to provide my pup with what he deserves- nothing but the best. From the on demand texting support i have gotten in the app when i send them messages after hours asking "is this normal? We have taken our dog here for the past four years and we we love the efficiency and care they have shown our dog. Whether it's routine check ups or emergency visits we have to found that, most of the time, booking appointments have not been an issue. Their app is quite nice to book appointments and also accept invoice. We haven't had a trouble with getting persecriptions for our dog's medications or getting insurance claims approved which is nice too. Lastly, or perhaps most importantly, our dog loves coming here because they definitely are not frugal when it comes to giving dog's treats. My last visit was a couple months ago and thinking about it still upsets me. I had brought my cat here a handful of times since 2024, and the experiences got gradually worse each time. On the surface, with the app and everything, it feels shiny and new and efficient. But on the flip side, everything feels impersonal and cold. So after some bloodwork, they determined that my cat had hyperthyroidism and prescribed methimazole twice a day. Shortly after starting the medication, my cat started throwing up uncontrollably. So I brought him in for another visit. A simple internet search shows that indeed, vomiting is a common side effect for the medication. Well, the vet I had this time (also different from the one who prescribed the med), was dismissive and said nope, the medication does not in fact cause vomiting and I should continue administering it as prescribed. End of story. So I did, and what do you know? Cat starts puking uncontrollably again. I would find puddles of clear liquid everywhere because even on an empty stomach, he was throwing up. The only follow-up was to continue the meds and do some other testing if he keeps throwing up. Absolutely no regard for my own testimony that it was the medication that was causing it. Previously I also brought my cat in for overgrooming, and they shaved the area in question when he came back for follow-up, making it so much easier for my cat to irritate again (this after already being cone-bound for at least a week). Are they thinking at all? I had to keep my cat in his cone for a couple more weeks till his fur grew back a little. Staff are nice on the surface, but it's all transactional and they don't really care about you or your pet. I'd rather find someplace else. read more

We have taken our special needs shelter rescue to Modern Animal since we adopted her at six months old. Yesterday, I had to bring my beloved dog, Rachel, back to Modern Animal hospital in Pasadena. She had another seizure, similar to the one described in the prior review I wrote on August 4, 2025. Unfortunately, this time Rachel did not make it. I did not leave the hospital with Rachel. Dr. Kang found a tumor which she believed was cancerous. Dr. Kang told me that if I brought Rachel home, her condition would decline and that she may die in pain. Accordingly, I made the decision that most pet parents dread making. However, I was fortunate that this happened at Modern Animal in Pasadena. Juan, the nurse on duty, and Dr. Kang, the attending physician, were very supportive and comforting. They gave me time to say good bye. They went through the options with me. They assured me that I was doing the right thing. And, that Rachel knew I was there for her. Rachel died in her sleep in my arms. Dr. Kang explained, that I gave Rachel the gift of being able to die peacefully in her sleep. Given that this decision is always difficult, I am glad it happened at Modern Animal in Pasadena. I am glad that nurse Juan and Dr. Kang were the attending medical professionals. read more

I called for a price on the medication my dog with Addison's needs for life. I currently pay $300+/month which is roughly $3,600/year and $36,000+ over the next 10 years, and they refused to give it to me, even though they post prices for many other drugs on their website. Instead, they insisted on an unnecessary $85 exam in order to tell me their prices. No exam would change her care, it is what it is. So as a business owner myself, I would've done anything to get someone in my position's business because I can see the long-term financial benefits. Their short-sighted greed cost them HUGE long term profit and for that reason alone I will not be going to them. Truly impressive... if your goal is losing money. Ps I have two dogs. Big mistake, BIG, HUGE!! Pps. They charge $85 for an exam and Vet Villa charges $63 so I'm sure they're more expensive anyways. read more

I have been taking my two dogs here for a few years. They've gotten regular preventative care as well as emergency care. I am so grateful to have found Modern Animal. Through the app, I can always chat with a vet tech about questions or concerns; make and manage appointments; access my dogs' vaccination records; and review test results and visit summaries. As great as the app is, the staff are the key differentiator. All the doctors and techs are so good. And happy. Plus, I've never experienced shorter wait times at any medical office, including those for humans. I guess Modern Animal is more expensive, but I honestly don't know how much or care. At my old vet, preventative care was impossible because I could never get an appointment. Here, I spend more money because my dogs are getting regular care. I brought my dog in for a suspected uti. We are new to the area and haven't found a vet yet but I needed something quick. All around a poor experience and I don't feel like my dog received good care. During the appointment the tech and doctor seem to lack basic knowledge and the tech has poor boundaries with pets and pet parents. They are not personable and rely on the app too much (lab results came in, doctor left notes/recommendations, I am left to decipher and try to figure out what to do). my dog was left in pain with pancreatitis because of the impersonal approach (no one called to check on her, ask for updated signs/symptoms, etc.). You can chat on the app, but it's overwhelming on there, and I am not a vet so I'm not versed in her condition. I asked for pain meds, which they never offered even though I mentioned her panting. They should know it's a painful condition. Additionally, if you want a doctor to call you to go over what's on the app you have to make and pay for an appointment (per the person I spoke to on the phone). Also a phone call from the doctor, after spending over $900 and receiving a rather intense diagnoses, to help me navigate what to do next seems reasonable. read more

I've had many appts in the past few months with MA. I am a fur mama with 4 babies, so I've been busy introducing them to the staff at the Pasadena facility. I've had to finance a few of my office visits because vet care gets expensive. There was an invoice that had been accidentally recorded twice, and I was making payments with Affirm. The billing dept wasted no time in helping me get an invoice voided, as well as explain a few items to me that I had questions regarding, and deal with a prescription issue that I wanted credit for. They talked with me, and solved every thing quickly and efficiently! The billing dept was so helpful. Saved me a little money on something too! The company works with Affirm. If you can't afford to pay for the whole bill, they allow you to apply with Affirm, and the invoice gets paid and your pet gets the care same day, and you can make payments! It's all so easy and streamlined. I do not have the best credit, and yet I got approved a couple times which was really great. Again Modern Animal is the place for all your pet care. What a wonderful group of professionals and sweet humans. I have been with Modern Animal for my vet care for about a year now. They were so kind to me and my cat. The membership ended up making a lot of sense for me (my cat was very old and sick) given the free visits and significant discount on tests. I saw them quite a few times this year. Every time I went they gave me every possible option for her care. No pressure to sell me on expensive extra things, but plenty of thoughtful info and advice. I loved having the option to chat with a nurse or dr on the app for quick advice without having to drive her in. It was also super easy to press two buttons to get a refill order for her meds and they did fast shipping when I couldn't make it to the office. Are they the cheapest? Probably not? Though never in my life have I left a vet and thought "wow that was cheap" so it's all relative. The offices are super clean and nice, communications were easy, and the people as I mentioned were so lovely and caring. When I had to make the heart-wrenching decision to let her go I felt like the whole office felt so deeply for her and me. They led us to a quiet, candle-lit room, and everything was done with a level of reverence I never thought possible. I was a hot mess but they really cared for me. Today, I got a really beautiful gift and multiple hand written notes specifically about my cat and our whole situation from all the doctors and nurses who helped me that day. The team at modern animal Pasadena is exceptional. They've supported me with my basset hounds anxiety and a recent UTI. The vet was SO knowledgeable about anxiety meds and the vet tech gave helpful recommendations. I've struggled to find a vet who knows about all the various anxiety meds and she was on top of it and helped increase his dose so that he's doing much better. They also let me be in the back with my dog while they got a urine sample as he was very stressed. He reacted fairly aggressively and everyone was so kind and patient which meant the world. I started getting emotional seeing my dog so stressed and they also checked in on me and supported me through it (shoutout Zucely)! They even gave me a personalized goodie bag with a drawing of my dog - made me tear up!!! And with modern animal in general, I really appreciate the price transparency and it's always so easy to book an appointment. Plus the app is easy to use and helps me track my pups health.
