The boys now want their particular hair styles so when I found this place they agreed to it. The vibe inside was very nice and chill. The owner Jenny & Lynne (former lady from across the street) had decided to not follow appointment rules & decide to take any walk-in's & left the peeps for over 30 min wait time. I still like Sandy, but their service & lack of manners should not be Alamedian behaviour. After looking in the mirror and realizing my work-from-home hair looked more like roadkill -- I decided to get a haircut that day. As a longtime Bay Area resident, I had my go-tos. I called my neighborhood one that knows my hair preferences by heart. No availability. Decided to drive to my favorite walk-in. Parked, walked to the shop, and saw a dozen people stuffed in the line of seats against the wall. Nope, not waiting over an hour. Opened my phone, did a Yelp search for the area, and saw Modern Hair Studio. Promising rating, photos, and reviews. I walked in and there were probably half a dozen stylists there. A few folks were in front of me, but it was quickly my turn. Importantly, observed some great haircuts and styling throughout the studio, include a really nice fade. My stylist, Lynn (Spelling?), was great. I explained to her what I wanted -- a mid-skin-fade box for the sides, keep the top long, and touch things up as necessary. She immediately understood and communicated it. She was skilled, efficient, and put in extra touches that shows her high level, such as stopping to manipulate my hair to make sure it would look good once styled. The fade looked great and exactly what I wanted, and it looked even better after I styled it at home, showing that she anticipated how it would look once styled. I left happy with my experience! It wasn't a long wait, my styling was skilled and efficient, and it was great value as well. Highly recommended! Tips: I overheard a customer coming in for an appointment. I would do that in the future. No need to pay parking fees on Webster. Just go down a side street and you'll find parking within 1-2 blocks. read more

I am shocked that I have yet to leave a review for this fabulous salon! I have been coming to the Modern Hair Studio for the past 7 years. I came in on a whim before a gym class. Before the Modern Hair Studio, I had a very basic, ho-hum cut. I would try salon after salon, but would go away feeling just blah. I would spend 15.00 - 150.00/cut and nothing wowed me. I didn't know what I wanted coming in that first time, but I saw a poster on the wall of model with the most incredible asymmetrical, curly cut. I sat down in Sandy's chair, pointed at the poster and said "I want that!" My hair has always been wavy, but after Sandy's cut, it sprung to life! Never have I had a signature style, but she gave me just that! I have received countless compliments on my hair over the years and sent many a person to Sandy. I have admired many trends and have thought to try a new cut, but this style is just uniquely me! Now in my 50's, I have also been getting my hair colored by Jenny. She always makes me look 15 years younger! I cannot recommend them enough. If I could give them 10 stars I would. read more

I've been coming to Modern Hair for simple wash&cuts since moving to Alameda, and I've always had great service! Everyone is so kind and friendly. The woman who washes my hair is always thorough and gives the BEST head massages (firm and really gets into the scalp!) Jenny cuts my hair and is thoughtful in her questions, offers suggestions, and works with your request to find a happy medium. Best of all, they are affordable priced and in a great location. Went into this salon a long while ago, and the place is very spacious. I needed to get a haircut asap cause I was looking a little wild lol. I attempted to call, but I assume that they were busy so I drove their instead. Once walking in and asking if they were available for a walk-in, was told to wait 30 minutes. Easy-peasy. The hairstylist was very sweet and nice. She was quick and precise and made sure I was taken care of. I forgot her name, but I would absolutely go back. Loved my haircut, quick and easy. read more

I took my 6yo son for his salon haircut. For better or for worse, he has my hair texture which is thick and wavy, so home haircuts can only suffice for so long. We walked in about 10:30 Saturday morning and it got busy right after us so we'll be sure to make an appointment next time. Jenny was super sweet and did a great job! I've been going to the salon for more years than I can count. I have not had an agenda for my hair when I go. I've always told Jenny do what you think is fun. I don't feel I was a demanding customer, I was shit as long as it took, chat a little bit, but mostly just play Scrabble and get my hair done. The last couple times haven't been so great. The cut has not been good. I always request Jenny when I make the appointment. Most of the time I have to wait a while. But I get it. It's fine. The last time I was in there I was there early, Jenny took two customers that had just walked in late for their appointment. Not the end of the world. But it continued... Then she told me her associate would be cutting my hair. It was beyond terrible! The woman just kept telling me I would be "sexy, sexy" I told her I didn't care about sexy. I'm 69. I don't care. I just want a haircut. she just continued; "sexy sexy". Worst haircut ever! Here I am some two months later waiting for my hair to grow out. I wake up every morning and I look like Einstein without the brain! Makes me know I was no longer valued customer. Now unfortunately, I'll have to look for another place. Don't even know where to start considering I've been at Jenny's hand for longer than 15 years. I gave it two stars based on the affection I have for this establishment and the past I've had here. I use to come here and have a younger lady cut my hair. But they told me she no longer work here. So I had a new lady that I never seen before cut my hair. I was so disappointed. She doesn't cut as clean/skin fade like the barber I had before. For $30 is so not worth it for an uneven fade. I notice there are a few salon next block over. I think it was COCO SALON and another BEAUTY CUT. Maybe I try them. I saw their price outside it's cheaper than here. Also the vibe at this place change so much. I highly recommend this place for anyone looking for hair services. I was looking for a haircut in the nearest salons and I thought of giving this place a try based on their rating on Yelp. The place was very clean following all covid protocols. My stylist Jenny did a great job of my haircut. Oh man was just a terrible experience. NOT good for kids (or at least young school age kids with wavy/curly hair). Running super late: We were taken 20 min after our original appointment time. Poor communication: The stylist spoke little English, couldn't communicate with my kid. Technique: Made her cry brushing her hair because she was so aggressive getting out tangles. Excellent service. Very professional. My younger teenage son came here about 3 months ago and was very happy with his haircut here (he's been very upset after his past three haircuts) so this says a lot. He came home and recommended his older bro come here. Well, I the mom came here about 6 weeks ago, got an excellent re-layering of my hair, and advice in my hair. Jenny was very friendly and helpful. Today, both our teenagers came for a week after Back-to-school- haircut . Younger son wanted 3/4 inch off his hair. You'd think this was easy, but previous salons couldn't do just that. well they did a good job again. My older son had a photo of his desired hair cut, and said on the way here that he hopes they don't argue with him about how to cut his hair. No arguing. His salon person was Sandy. She did a fantastic job. Son said that was the best fade he's ever had and Sandy knew what she was doing and was very skilled . She'd even taught him what to do with some of his front hair that he wasn't sure about. He was also surprised it was only $25 and not $40 for his haircut. We've already recommended this place to several friends! Very clean and bright. read more

I recommend calling ahead - we were able to get a same day appointment for my 3 year old. Cindy is super nice and was the first hairdresser to finish a haircut properly for our son who usually wails with me holding him. With Cindy, he watched you tube kids on my iPhone and was great! Cindy had a magnifying plastic screen to make the screen bigger too - so she was very well prepared. The cut was $20 plus tip and was well worth the value taking away the stress of a haircut. She also was prepared with a lollipop at the end, which my son still talks about a week later. read more

After a few months of floating around, I found my spot. All the woman here are so friendly and welcoming. They know me by name and always do a perfect job. I always left very satisfied and happy to show my new hair off with a selfie. I highly recommend any guy to get their hair cut here. They do an amazing line up and also could cut lines in if you request. I have done it and they do it just as good as the people who charge 4 to 5 times more. I called to ask for availability....The lady said they were booked for the day, but said if I showed up right now she would be able to cut my hair. I was across the street when she said that. I got there in seconds. When I get there, she was still cutting someone. So I figured she might be almost done. 25-30 minutes later she tells me she's almost done. I ask if I can come back later because I have another appointment to go to that's across town. She says she is full. Then goes on to tell me that's why she had me come in now. But 30 minutes later she still working with her other customer?? Help that make sense. Maybe stick with the truth that you have a full schedule instead of wasting somebody's time. Also be more sensitive and take responsibility when you do waste a customers time. read more

This review is overdue. I chose to cut my hair since I saw it was an option on ClassPass. The stylist, Jenny, was very kind and personable and I am sure they typically do a great job, however, I did not have a great experience with my own haircut. I came in asking for a trim and face framing bangs. She explained that she would be doing layers and need to add "some texture" to help it blend in but I noticed as she was cutting that she she would just pick up random sections and snip randomly. I understand that this may be part of the process and I am happy my hair feels healthier since she removed the dead ends but it's been a few weeks now and I've found it challenging to curl my hair due to the uneven cutting since I am guessing the random areas that she cut off for the layers were uneven. Others may have had a great experience, however, I personally would not return to this salon. read more

Brought my daughter's (age 7 & 5) for cuts. My older has wavy hair and wanted a bob, younger has stick straight hair and needed a trim. With the waves you need layers and with the straight hair a perfect cut because any uneven ends show (which is why I don't bother with kid's cut places) - happy to report both haircuts are wonderful and we will be going back! read more

What is the point of having an appointment taken before if I still have to wait for over 30 minutes for my turn. I missed my other appointments because your business wasn't able to effectively manage your calendar. I would respect if you indicate "walks in" only instead of accepting appointments. I went to this salon for years because it was on the West End where I live and I like to support local businesses. Jenny, the manager, always cut my hair and I regularly paid double her rate because it was frequently overgrown and I knew it would take a full 20-25 minutes of her time. But a few months ago, when I went to get a trim, she was unfriendly, hurried through the cut, and repeatedly asked me if my hair was clean and if I wanted a shampoo. My hair had been washed less than 12 hours before the appointment, was not overly conditioned or coated with product, and showed no signs of poor hygiene, and I came away feeling as if I was no longer welcome at the establishment: all of which surprised me since it was a Saturday and there was only one other person there. Jenny only brightened up at the end when I paid her my customary $50 and it seemed to dawn on her, at that point, that I was a regular customer she had not treated well. My mother was a stylist and would never have treated any of her clients that way, even on a bad day, and I will not be going back. I have since relocated to Salon One on Park and recommend their services highly. read more

This is a long over due review but I have been going to this shop for a year and a half, on and off during the pandemic when they were open. Currently they are closed but when they do open up I would absolutely recommend it. The prices are very affordable especially compared to the surrounding barber shops, which means more to give for tip! Haircuts, just like massages are therapeutic for me. I am very picky about my haircuts and very loyal to my barbers who do an amazing job. I've always had my go to and I didn't find that in the east bay until I made it here I was skeptical at first because I assumed their specialties were with long hair but I was blown away after my first cut! The staff was very welcoming and they remembered me after my first visit. My go to is Lee! She knows exactly what I want and how I want it. I might change it up once my top grows out but for now a very clean, high and tight skin fade. I recently asked if they do any waxing services and yes, they do! I had my eyebrows waxed and just like my hair she did an amazing job! I always leave the shop feeling relaxed and rejuvenated. read more

I believe this location is great value. I had this one Asian Vietnamese lady cut my hair. I forgot her name but she is on the left side second or third chair from the entrance. She did a really good job and dedicated a lot of attention and energy to my unique hair.I believe she has very good skills and would definitely come with her again. read more

The haircut was $20 and they also take credit cards. I'd recommend making an appointment because it sounded like they were pretty booked.
