Background: My mom visited the Moon Salon in earlier this year in June 2019 to get her hair done in preparation for my younger brother's middle school graduation that took place a few days after. This review is in her words, translated to English and posted on my Yelp account because she does not have one. This review is for a hair treatment my mom went to Moon Salon for and not a review on a hair cut. My mom wanted to get her hair permanently straightened, as she's been getting this done for years at various other salons whenever her hair has grown out. She's driven past this salon on several occasions and wanted to try the place out. She did not make an appointment prior to coming in but was the only customer there and Moon helped her with her hair needs. Moon placed the straightening treatment on my mom's hair and placed her under the heat dryer chair. Moon set the timer for 45 minutes then that's when other customers started coming in. There were 2 or 3 other customers and she was helping them with their hair needs when the timer she had set for my mom went off. Moon came to reset the timer for another time and proceeded to help these other customers. When she was finally done with these 2 or 3 customers, she returned back to check on my mom. Keep in mind, the time that has passed was 45 minutes and then some. She took my mom to rinse off then blow dried her hair and flat ironed it before sending my mom off home. During this process of washing off and styling, my mom felt mild pain but did not think anything of it, thinking it was a side effect of the treatment. When my mom got home, she combed her hair and noticed a lot of hair falling off. She then started patting the top of her head and it felt incredibly prickly to the touch. The next day my mom went back to the salon to talk with Moon and let her know that her hair was falling off and burnt to a crisp. Moon, at first denied any part, saying my mom's curly hair was the reason. This is far from the truth as we are Asian women with normal, straight hair. Moon did not want to return my mom's money so she gave my mom an oil treatment but to everyone's disappointment, that didn't help. With nothing else left to do, my mom returned home with her crispy hair. My mother just wanted pin straight hair and ended up with her hair being burnt off. A lot of her hair broke off and in some places, she had bald spots. Where her hair parted, a lot of hair missing as well. In short, she fried my mom's hair off to the point that it all frizzled, sizzled, and broke off. 2 months later, the hair that's fallen off has started to grow back and it is evident as it sticks out like cow licks. I am saddened to this happened to my mom as it was the mistake on Moon's part to leave her in the hair dryer for longer than needed just so Moon could work on other people's hairs. My mother wanted me to write this to let others know to be aware when coming to Moon's salon for hair treatments. She did, however, say that Moon cuts hair beautifully -- her hair treatment services are what others should be wary of. This salon is not too far from my house so I decided to give this place a try. I was hoping to come out with a good experience and return for more. Unfortunately, my haircut turned out horrible and I was lucky to come out of the salon without being burned. I was charged $22 + tips for a haircut, no wash, a regular cut, nothing fancy, no bangs, no layers, just a regular women's haircut. I went home to wash my hair and my ends looked unfinished. Moon (the owner) cut my hair, nothing special about the cut, it was rushed, fast, and sloppy. Not sorry for the bad review because she could of burn me in the face with the hair straighter and apologize pretending it was an accident when that shouldn't happen if she was being careful. Neighborhood is sketchy and thinking about the nasty scar I could of gotten from this place, all not worth giving this salon a try again. read more

needed an emergency hair cut done in the afternoon and her shop was one that closed aa little later than other salons so i took the risk to give this place a try. Moon was friendly and made me comfortable but she does have a rough hand. She will yank your hair while brushing and is not gentle w it lol ( ouch ) . I'd come back for a trim but thats it . read more

Moon is such a good stylist. She is very thorough. Today she was finished and I almost got up and she said, wait. She then looked at the back of my head and trimmed just a little more. She is a perfectionist. I asked and she trimmed my eyebrows and checked my ears. I wish her every success. This is a family salon so you won't find any men's magazines there and not much in English. But I bring my own reading with me. The place is impeccably clean. The bathroom is spotless. The only problem is I feel bad for the other lady who rents a chair. I always wait for Moon. I don't want the other lady to feel bad, but it's Moon or I'll come back. read more

I've been getting my hair cut with the owner for 10+ years. Whether it's a short cut, long layers, coloring or just a trim...I've never regret it. She's quick and usually follows my request to the tee. And you can't beat the price! Happy that she started her own shop! Shop was clean and well lit. Nice clean little neighborhood salon. Moon is friendly and helpful, but takes on her own liberties on style, based on the handful of times I've gone here and my experience. I printed out images of a shaggy bob that I wanted (front, sides and back) but she seemed to skim over it and not really take in the details that I wanted. The subtle A line angle I wanted ended up being straight, and now reminds me of those old fashioned bobs. It takes me a while to grow out my hair. I'm still on the search for a go-to for hairstyles. I think I'll stick to trims with Moon, since it is conveniently located. read more

I'm originally from Oakland, so this winter break, I came back home to visit home. I was in need of a hair trim because my hair had grown an immense amount of split ends since I last cut it in the summer. Even though I'm originally from here, I never had a "usual" hair salon to go to get haircuts because I usually had someone I knew do it for me. I wanted to change it up a bit, so I tried out this new place a family friend recommended. I would say I really love this place. Along with a hair trim, I also colored my hair a new deep cherry red color, which was the color the hairstylist recommended for me. Against my naturally dark brown hair, it showed rather nicely! I love this color! There is only one person currently working here, I think she's the boss, and she is super nice and very professional. She knows what she's doing. I would recommend this place 5/5! Price is very very cheap, my husband gets his hair cut here, he loves it and I do as well. Moon is great with what you ask her to do for you, your needs and likes are first and prior to finding this gem for my husband he used to get his hair cut and other stylists always want to give him bangs. In past visits, especially around the time they first opened, the head stylist did a great job. The last few times I've been in, I feel she has been rushing a bit even when there isn't a long wait. Today, however, today was not so great. I was the only client, but the cut felt speedy and done hastily. I asked to have my sides trimmed down to a one to start and possibly to a zero and then half the length off the top. The sides were done perfectly fine, but she screwed up the top which I didn't notice until I got home. One side was significantly and obviously shorter than the other. It'll make styling a little challenging, but I'll manage and my hair will grow back and I can get it cut perfectly next time, but that probably won't be for another month when it reaches a good length to even even out. I'm a little disappointed. This salon also wasn't my first choice as my first choice had not opened its doors even though it was the time posted to be open. Whether I'll return again, I don't know.
