My daughter has been wanting to dye her hair and was just driving me nuts but I didn't feel comfortable doing it at home since she had black hair and required bleaching. So, I made an appt with Lily. Lily was honest and gave her professional opinion. My daughter wanted her hair blue but since it would require some major bleaching to get it light enough, Lily suggested a red instead. My daughter wasn't 100% sold because she really wanted the blue. However, what's the point of bleaching it if the blue wasn't going to show up on her hair anyways or the other option was to just leave. So, she settled for the balayage red tone. She ended up loving it and said she was feeling quite fierce with her new color and a total confident booster! I would love to come back for Lily's services. Now, my older daughter wants hers done. This review is long overdue. I've been going to Tomo's since I was in high school (1994) and they've seen their fair share of updates and changes but their quality has always been top-notch. The quality of their stylists I think is one of their best qualities. They're all professional and it shows in their outcome. Do not go to this salon. I came in as a walk in appointment which is my fault but I thought would be fine because I saw no one inside/they did not seem busy. When I said I wanted a trim and showed how much I wanted cut, they laughed at my face and said "that's not a trim that's a hair cut." Again, my fault on my part for not knowing but could've said that to me in a professional and respectful tone. The whole process felt rushed. They rushed when washing my hair and were harsh when scrubbing my scalp. And when they were at the blow drying process, one lady blow dried one side of my hair while another lady blow dried the other which I never had that happen before. They did not care for my hair at all and it felt like they wanted me gone as soon as possible even though they had only one other customer walk in in the middle of my appointment. Seeking just a trim, I was hoping to spend under $80 for this simple service. Loved the $45 hair cut price listed on their website. I booked an appointment through Google and received several email reminders leading up to the date/time. The salon is welcoming, clean and efficient. Tony took great care of me. We laughed about hair cut horror stories and he made me feel so comfortable, checking with the length to trim. He did a great simple blow out and the trim was exactly what I hoped for. STAY AWAY FROM MAX I haven't stopped crying since I walked out. Cut my hair super short without telling me, cut my eyebrows without even asking. Had no respect for what I wanted. Experimented on my hair right before I was supposed to go on a big trip and when I expressed my grief, he was rude and not apologetic. He has no sympathy and with how bad this haircut is, he has poor taste. Update: It's been almost 3 weeks now and although Lily 'fixed' the hair the best should could after max's hackjob, it still looks like shit. I would stay away from Max and check out other pictures of other terrible haircuts he's given. i keep my hair long and rarely get haircuts. it's not a pampering experience for me; it's really just for maintenance. in that sense, lilly at tomo for hair was just fine for my needs. quick consultation, quick wash with a mini neck massage, quick cut with minimal but friendly conversation (a-ok in my book), dry and style, and i was out the door within 40 minutes. fast and efficient! the price tag: $70 before tip. it feels a little steep considering you're in and out so quickly but the cut looks fine even after (not) styling it myself so i can't really complain! if you want a leisurely, pampering experience, i don't think this is the place for you. but if you want a friendly but no-nonsense experience so you can get on with your day, give lilly at tomo a try. read more

Lily is now the owner and I am so happy for her- she has all the skill and passion of taking Tomo to the next level. It is under renovation now, but it's still open for business; even though it's not finished yet, you can tell that Tomo will now look a lot more modern, chic, yet still warm and welcoming! I always bring in a picture for Lily to work off of and she gives me her professional advice based on my current hair style/texture/color. After discussing, I put all my trust into Lily and I always walk out very happy and excited about my new look. Lily works very quickly, efficiently, but very carefully. If you want a place that is affordable, trustworthy, and caters to your needs, Tomo is the place to go! My most recent appointment included color, wash, and cut and was only $170. It's in the heart of downtown Alameda and so parking can be scarce. However, there is metered parking on both sides of the street- max limit is 2 hours ($1.50/hr) so if you are anticipating a longer appointment, set an alarm to re-fill! read more

Don't not go to this salon if you want to be yelled at and degraded! I came in as a walk in to do my hair! I asked for a copper color from my black natural hair and a red tint for hair dye. They never followed a procedure to ask if I have ever box dyed my hair or even do a safe strip test. I am only aware of this because I had to go to another hairstylist for advice! Through the process was okay but was never to recall been told about breakage or anything along the lines! I noticed my hair had breakage and that it was patchy. I called the Hair Salon but the guy Tom, he invalidated my feelings and even laughed at me. He didn't do no help in solving my problems! I then remembered that they wanted me to use Zelle so I contacted the number on there. Which happened to be Lily which also was the person who also did my hair along the lines of Tom! I sent her " I'm not happy with my hair especially with the damages of breakage going on! It's so noticeable that people around me are letting me know! I don't know if he has curled it to hide away from it being patchy. They didn't do the right procedure or consultation when doing my hair. And even let her know about Tom" she called me a few minutes after. She asked me what happened and totally went into defense mode and was basically saying it was my fault and that I should've known!
