First time at this hair salon and I absolutely loved my experience! My hair cut was exactly what I asked for. I thought the color came out well but was told I could return next week for a touch up because my hair stylist didn't think it was 100%. Which is amazing, really shows they care. Also I must say, the most comfortable hair washing experience I've ever had at a salon. I tried 2 other hair salons on Webster before I found Modern Hair Studio, and Modern Hair Studio is easily my favorite. I get my hair cut ~once a month from Sandy, and I am so impressed with her skill level and attention to detail. The first time I visited, Sandy wasn't sure how I liked to cut my hair, so she suggested that she start with a higher guard (to cut less off) to make sure that I was happy with how she was cutting my sides before she cut more off. I liked that she didn't rush through it, which is especially important for a first time customer, because I think it always take 1-2 visits for someone to really understand how you want your haircut to look. The other ladies who work there are great too! I've watched them cut other customer's hair, and the level of quality is very consistent across. read more

I booked an appointment a week before and went I arrived I had to wait almost 20-30 minutes because they kept taking in walk-ins when they knew they were busy. When I finally got sat in a chair, they told me "oops" and prioritized a walk-in and had to wait another 15-20 minutes. On top of that, I showed Sandy what I wanted which was a one length haircut. I left a generous tip considering how rushed everything was and the next day I notice how choppy and uneven my hair was from the back. Some strands were longer than others and it looked more like a messed up a-line bob. I didn't bother calling or wanting to get my hair fixed by them anymore, now I have to wait a couple months for everything to grow back out and get it fixed. read more

Based on reviews, I got my first no-frills haircut here by Jenny last year. It was a mediocre experience. She was nice enough but she lacked precision and technique. I have thick straight hair and wanted an uncomplicated few inches cut straight in the back and my few layers in front trimmed to frame my face. This is a haircut that my regular stylist for over 12 years, Nina with "We Are Hair" did beautifully and precisely. Unfortunately, Nina has been out on maternity leave forcing me to search for another to cut my hair. It was a rainy day when I went in and my long hair was in a ponytail and a bit poofy. When Jenny began cutting the back of my hair she didn't spray my hair with water to get an accurate cut. She just combed my hair in the back and laid it flat along my back to cut it like a home cut by my mom or aunt when I was a child. Jenny put one layer of hair down first, tried to cut that straight before putting the rest down my back to try to cut the rest of my back layer straight. However Nina my previous stylist always took a bit of my hair between two fingers and made precise cuts to get the back length of my hair straight before releasing another thin layer of hair in the back and repeating the process. As an experienced hair stylist Nina did this accurately and precisely. Nina usually divided my back hair in three or four layers (not two as Jenny did) to achieve precision and it was always wet. I had to request Jenny spray my hair a couple times with water when she worked on my front layers to make sure she could accurately achieve a good trim on my layers. The layers looked okay. When Jenny was done, the front layers were okay although some stray layer pieces were not trimmed, which she stated was how layers work although I never had that issue with this haircut for years. She handed me a mirror to check the back of my hair. I noticed that it was not straight. The left side was a bit longer. She tried to fix it. Jenny said my hair was poofy and that I would have needed to flat iron my hair beforehand to get an accurate cut. (Funny, Nina my long-time stylist never flat ironed my hair before giving me a precise hair cut for years. However spraying some water would have definitely helped.) I looked at my hair after Jenny tried to fix the back of my hair and didn't look much different so I just thanked her and paid her as that seemed like that was the extent of her capabilities. This haircut was an inexpensive $18 before my added tip so I guess I got what I paid for. My regular haircuts before tip with Nina are $40 (a really good price for her skill level). When I got home I had to trim a bit of my front layers and my hubby said my hair on my left side was a bit longer. :/ So relieved that Nina is back at work! I will not return to Modern Hair Studio for a repeat performance despite the great price. read more

Well... this place is just a diamond in the rough, let me just say that I called them to see if they can cut my hair 20 mins before closing and they said that they would do it. When I walked in I waited a mere 5 mins and when Mrs. Lee called me she said "sorry to keep you waiting" customer service 10/10. My haircut was very precise and she took her time even though it was way past closing time, Mrs. Lee made great conversation the whole time and I got a fantastic cut for $16 bucks ( mind you I was about to got to place that quoted me $38 dollars). I pretty much gave Jenny carte blanche to give me an easy-care style that she thought would look good for my features and hair type, and she gave me a shorter (but not short-short) cut that really brings out the waves, which I love! I moved to Alameda 10 months ago and have been searching for someone who could cut my short hair. I went to other salons, the last trip resulting in a particularly horrendous and very expensive haircut. After reading the reviews for Modern Hair Studio and Jenny inparticular, I decided to try again. AWESOME! Jenny is incredible. She listened to what I was trying to describe, showing her pictures of different styles with various elements. Jenny is AMAZING!! My first ever experience with her was for cut and color when she worked at Super Cuts in the Marina Village Shopping Center. That day, I decided to change up my hair on impulse and I am so glad that I did. I showed Jenny the photo of what I wanted and she perfected the cut! Fast forward a year and a half later - I decided to do something different to my hair again. I called the Super Cuts to schedule with Jenny and they told me she no longer worked there and I was super bummed, but then quickly informed me that she had opened up her own shop. They provided me Jenny's shop info and I was able to schedule an appointment on the day I was available. Once again, I showed her a photo of what I wanted and she did an amazing job - exactly like the picture. My sister also got a hair cut from Jenny that day. She had not gotten a hair cut in years and she had very long hair. She decided to go with a medium bob cut and she was IN LOVE with what Jenny did! Recently I have came to Jenny for color corrections because I decided to play around with colors like fire red (which I will never do again). She was able to help tone the color down to a nice deep red. Red hair is hard to maintain and I didn't do a great job at maintaining it so it started to fade out. I went somewhere else to try and go blonde, but after a few bleach sessions, it left my hair very brittle and brassy feeling. Long story short, I went into the salon on April 15th and Jenny was able to do a very natural chocolate/mocha brown color and trimmed my hair.
