This is a review for the bar/restaurant of The Modern. I wouldn't like having a bar located smack in the middle of the courtyard of the hotel if I was a guest. As a bar patron only though, I really liked the concept. The buildings and the trees provided plenty of shade to keep us cool on a 90 degree evening. The Modern has an extensive selection of cocktails, beer, and wine. One of our friends ordered the Frau Holle. He seemed to really enjoy it though having an entire sprig of rosemary in the drink was a bit much for me when I tasted it. I opted for the City of Trees IPA which was really good, although I wish they served it by the pint instead of in a smaller glass. I feel like anytime a restaurant serves beer in a small volume than a pint, they should note it on their menu. Another one of our friends had an Aperol soda which was perfectly fine. The menu had many enticing options, but the general consensus from our group was that the meals failed to deliver on their promising descriptions. I ordered the gnocchi with wild mushrooms and greens. While the gnocchi was pillowy soft, the mushrooms were a bit rubbery and didn't seem to really go with the dish. Maybe a different type of mushroom would have worked better. The "greens" in the description were actually just two spinach leaves. The leek fonduta was underwhelming. I probably wouldn't order this dish again. My wife had the bean salad and wasn't very impressed either. Our food also took a long time to be prepared and was relatively expensive for the portion size. The gnocchi was nearly $20 and there were maybe 15-20 pieces of gnocchi. While we all agreed that while The Modern was good place to get a drink, it was definitely our least favorite place that we ate at in Boise. If you are looking for a cool bar with good service and a chill vibe, it is worth checking out though. read more

Great place as the food and reviews indicated. Our friends Michele R. and Mike brought us to this place and amazingly her review of over 4 years ago is still valid and good. Read it for the best picture of this find. I think back then, she wanted to keep it a secret, but no way is it a secret now. The cocktails are fun and tasty. The ladies had French 75s, not on the special drinks, but they knew how to make good ones. The guys had the Long Weekend, a tall refreshing rum based drink. I'd have that again, for sure. The menu is always changing depending what is in season and available. With the cocktails, we shared a wonderful terrine pate with pickled accompaniments and baguettes slices. Perfect with our drinks. Each couple decided on soup and an appetizer to split.Wines by the glass were summery and light for these dishes, roses and sauvignon blancs. The fresh peas soup, cold, was very refreshing and a big enough bowl to split. The appetizers were the Benton Country Ham served with fruit and pickled mushroom accompaniments. A country ham can be salty, so be prepared. Best of all was the Morels and Polenta with fava beans and spruce butter. The flavor of the morels was enhanced by the cooking treatment. Yummy. Finished up with a couple of coffees and a butterscotch pudding and a delicious panna cotta. A wonderful night with friends, good food, and wonderful weather. Who could ask for more? read more

You ever been to one of those restaurants that are super pretentious, the staff is chock full of hipsters with elitist attitudes and the food is overpriced and overrated? Welcome to The Modern. My wife and I were there last night for the first time meeting another couple for dinner, and we got there a few minutes early. We ordered a drink at the bar and perused the menu. My wife is a vegetarian. Of the 7 or so entree choices only one was vegetarian---wild mushroom gnocchi. She loves gnocchi, but mushrooms are her least favorite food. I politely asked the bartender if they could not add the mushrooms to the gnocchi. He responded, in the most condescending voice he could possibly muster, "We don't do ANY substitutions or changes to our dishes." Now, mind you that the mushrooms are not PART of the gnocchi itself. The chef simply grabs a handful and throws them in the sauté pan during preparation. Nonetheless, at The Modern, it's not possible for the chef NOT to grab those mushrooms and NOT put them in the pan. He's compelled to do so by their very strict NO substitutions policy. Our friends arrived and we sat down. After sitting there for about 10 minutes our grumpy and annoyed server arrived. My friend's wife pointed to a cocktail on the menu and asked if she could have it with vodka instead of gin. I knew the answer before the server uttered it. The server responded, in HER most condescending and annoyed voice, "We don't do ANY substitutions." Really!? Instead of grabbing the gin, isn't it pretty simple for the bartender to simply grab the vodka!? It's not like the bartender has to go down the street to get the f'ing vodka, it's right next to the gin! But still, no substitutions. I then ordered my second cocktail, which was a Makers Mark Old Fashioned (my first was a dirty Bombay martini). A few minutes later the bartender came over and told me that they hadn't "gotten their liquor order in" and they'd have to SUBSTITUTE my Makers Mark with another bourbon. You don't know how badly I wanted to remind him of the strict no substitutions policy. Anyway, we eventually ordered our overpriced meals, got them, ate them, and left. To sum up, The Modern was overpriced and pretentious, the service was rude, the menu limited, the food mediocre at best, the atmosphere stark and boring and God help you if you want to deviate from the menu in any way. There are a lot of great restaurants in Boise. Way too many for us to ever return to The Modern. read more

A scosh bit disappointed. I had heard great and wonderful things about The Modern. A group of us stopped by the bar and ordered their house cosmopolitan. Of the 13 or so who were in attendance that evening, The Cosmopolitan is a favorite drink for several of us. Others in the group had never even had a cosmo before (poor souls). It definitely says something when NO ONE in the group ordered a second cosmo, even though we all ordered more than one cocktail that night. Our group is in search of the best cosmo in Boise. Each lounge is scored on their house cosmo. If I remember correctly, the average score our group gave The Modern's cosmo was somewhere between 2 and 3 stars. The consensus was it was too citrus-y and was not a good value. Had I not ordered a cosmo, this very well might have been a 4 star review. That said, The Modern has a very cool ambiance. Nice, clean modern looking interior with awesome outdoor seating options (flame included), and the other cocktails they serve are decent... so they score points there. **This review is for the Bar/Restaurant only Would never have found this place on my own had it not been suggested to me by a friend. It's completely tucked away and inconspicuous but a real find. Nothing fancy about this place unless you count the menu. I will admit I did not know what several items listed one this menu were, but the server was very knowledgeable and was able to fully articulate and describe each dish fully and make suggestions. I had the Catfish which was prepared absolutely perfectly and was delicious. My friend had a vegan mushroom dish which she said was the best ever. We shared a desert which was a perfect balance of sweet and tart. Service was excellent! read more

I have dined at this restaurant / bar on multiple trips to Boise, but finally had the chance to stay for 1-night on a recent road trip. First things first - they allow pets. Yup. For a small fee, that is: $20 for the first Fido and $10 for each additional friend. The room was pretty small but we appreciated that the vicinity was four-legged friendly, with 1st floor rooms having drive-up access (for easy unloading of the kennels, bags, etc) and the restaurant patio being pet friendly. Our hotel room had a California-modern feel with minimalist decor and a shower that was nearly as big as the bed. Necessities were provided and of good quality, but for our expectation at that price range, the room was bare. Another thing noted by many Yelpers is that there is no thermostat in the individual rooms. This may be in part due to the efforts of the hotel to minimize heating and cooling costs, but consequently lacks the homey touch. Equally important was the restaurant/bar. I had fond [drunken] memories from dining here on Boise trips past and was eagerly anticipating my return. Those memories did not disappoint. All of the dishes were unique, fresh, and flavorful. Some we enjoyed more than others - the potato leek soup, for example was the best we'd ever had, while the Welsh Rarebit was something too unusual for our taste buds, but our mistake for ordering. Also make sure so save room for desert. We brought the fresh tartlet (served with ice cream) back to our room to enjoy in front of the TV from the comfort of our bed. Don't forget to try the hand crafted cocktails (if you're into that sort of thing). They have a menu full of house specialties - including the Pimm's Cup, which I can highly recommend. Phew, we're not in Utah anymore! In conclusion, while it was fine to stay at The Modern for a quick night in Boise, for a longer stay [with pets] I would opt to reside at the Hotel Monaco and peddle over to enjoy dinner in the Modern's restaurant and bar. read more

This restaurant is horrible. I paid $30 for a stripe of hallibut the size of two fingers. The peas beneath it were cold. The sauce was flavorless. And the vegetables were decorations rather than being substantial. It was enough food for a 3 year old, but for any adult it was a starvation diet. I could have eaten four of these plates and still walked away hungry. This might be a fine place to drink, but I would never recommend getting anything to eat here -- you will be disappointed. read more

This hotel is my absolute favorite hotel I've ever stayed in. We've stayed the night three times now and have never been disappointed. Their attention to detail is amazing. Everything from the nightstands to the lighting to the showers is spot on mid century modern luxury. Their in room snack bar is completely stocked with everything you could possibly need: umbrella (I have NEVER seen that one provided before!), gum, chips, deoderant, hairspray, chocolates, cookies, a deck of cards! They even have their own selection of indie films to watch in your room! The fire pits in the courtyard outside are to die for. The restaurant has delicious food and drinks. The front desk attendant the last time we stayed was so kind and genuine. I just can't say enough good things about this place! read more

This hotel is so hip it hurts. Downtown Boise didn't have many hotel options. It seemed like the only options were super expensive or a little bit toooo cheap if you know what I mean. Given the context, the Modern Hotel is a top pick. You get a budget friendly hotel with some cool cred and no shadiness. My husband and I only stayed here 2 nights but I think it might be tough if you had to stay here for like a week, or had need for fancy clothes like business meetings or a wedding. There was no closet, only one small built-in thing only big enough for a few items. We just hung jackets and left our bags on the floor to rummage through. It would be nice to just put a dresser or bureau with a few drawers. No vanity space in the bathroom so I had to rest my hair & makeup stuff on top of the toilet. BTW they had Aveda toiletries. I like knowing what kind of toiletries you're going to get! The rooms may be basic but the hotel is a cool place to hang out. The cocktails are first class and they have excellent happy hour deals. I was underwhelmed by the Boise food scene and The Modern's restaurant was probably the menu that excited me the most. Lots of people filled up indoor & outdoor bar parts as it got later. If people are coming to the hotel bar for their nights out, you know you've got a gem. The free continental breakfast was great too. Good quality coffee and fresh pastries made by local businesses. Another cool amenity: I was flipping through the guestbook and it said you could schedule a massage in your room from a massage school student for only $15! (I'm talking a legit massage, you pervs) You could get a LMT too for a bit more and I remember that being not too expensive either. I was heading to Vegas right from Boise where a massage costs literally 15x more. I regret not having time to fit one in. It was really only a 10 minute walk to the main blocks in downtown so we always walked. When I was doing my research on the hotel, there were references to free bike rentals but I couldn't find any information on their website so I assumed they stopped doing it. Well I asked when we were checking in and they still do! Also, I got a AAA discount ($10 off per night) but I had to call & book over the phone. It was just under $100/nt before taxes. With so many amenities, this is one the best valued hotels I've stayed in. read more

The Modern Hotel: It's better than camping. My fiance and I stayed here for four days this summer after spending two nights camping in Bend and several weeks of gallivanting across the Pacific Northwest. We weren't expecting too much from Boise so we were pleasantly surprised by how great this establishment is. It's rare when I visit a city that I want to spend most of my time in the hotel bar but theirs is excellent! The amenities are nice and comfortable and the shower is awesome but it's really the staff that make this place so great. The bartenders are extremely knowledgeable about their craft and are also excellent company. I highly recommend this place if you find yourself in Boise. read more

We enjoyed our stay very much. We were checked in by friendly front desk staff. We received 2 Idaho Spud candy bars and a map of the city. The staff also offered help in restaurant selection, if needed. Our room was spacious and modern. There were many nice extra touches, such as liquid coffee creamers, Tazo tea, large soft bath towels, dual shower heads, quiet cooling/heating units, plus fluffy pillows and a comfy queen bed. Complimentary high speed wi-fi made working remotely easy. We regret not trying their on-site restaurant earlier. On our last day, we went down just to have coffee and ended up ordering breakfast. We were pleasantly surprised at their yummy sounding menu items and reasonable prices. We were not disappointed with what we ordered. The truffle eggs, served with a salad and trout and eggs were delicious! We enjoyed our breakfast outside in the nicely landscaped patio area. The Modern Hotel and Bar tried but didn't quite succeed, unfortunately. I recently stayed at the Modern Hotel while in Boise for a friend's graduation, and was thoroughly disappointed. From the pictures on their website, the hotel looks like a cute and MODERN boutique hotel in the middle of downtown Boise. Upon arrival, I discovered that the exterior of the hotel is modern but the inside of the rooms is not. This place is like a remodeled motel. PERIOD. It appears that they are in the middle of renovations because the bathrooms are very nice (although the sink is a pain to use) but the actual sleeping area is not. The paint was not fresh nor was the carpet. My room also had a strong perfume odor from the cleaning materials used to clean the room. I reserved a room with a balcony because I thought this would give me a view of the garden, but instead I was stuck looking at a beat up storefront across from the hotel. All that being said, every staff member was nice, the continental breakfast was wonderful, and parking was easy. The complimentary shuttle to and from the airport was a bonus and easy to fetch. During checkout, I found out that they have complimentary bike rentals! How cute! Overall, I like what this hotel has to offer but I would not choose this hotel again because the rooms weren't extremely comfortable. read more

The Modern is one of my most favorite patios when weather gets nice. They have wonderfully inventive food and cocktails. Not the usual or run of the mill concoctions. Delicious and locally sourced. I really like that that they change things up so each time it's an adventure. Their happy hour changes so I can try new drinks but my favorite is Makers Mark on the rocks, well one big rock. They make their own large ice cubes that are clear as glass and melt beautifully in my glass. Although it's a bit pricey, it's still worth it for a special night out. It's fun to get a variety of appetizers and share with friends. And the service has always been impeccable -- friendly, attentive, knowledgeable. So why the 4 stars? I'm a little claustrophobic so I only enjoy The Modern when we can sit outside. The seating inside is a little too tight for my comfort. Be sure to check out the bathroom. I can't speak about the men's room, but there's a turntable and a stack of 45's in the ladies' room and I love to go in, see what others have played, and pick out something fun to listen to. read more

What a great experience at The Modern Hotel and Bar! THE AMBIANCE: I came to Boise, Idaho, on a one night/one day business trip. I was greeted at the front desk by Joshua who told me he used to live in California and moved back to Boise because he loved it. Joshua was super nice and welcoming. I grabbed a key and went upstairs to leave my belongings before I started my night. My room had a queen bed and was super modern as their name says. To see the room's amenities and decor, check out the photographs. It was super clean and nice. The shower was huge. The room came with an iron, ironing board, table stand, big hair dryer, and a full-body mirror. They also had a cabinet, Vegas-style, where you can grab a snack, a drink, or even a hat for purchase. THE BAR: I started my night by going downstairs to check out their bar, which is next to the lobby. The area is very nice with some table seating and bar seating. It is not a big space but a good amount of people fit comfortably. I tried the Pimm's Cup ($8): Pimms No. 1, lemon, ginger beer, cucumber spear. Tall. It was really good. My bartender was Sam, who has a large beard. Thanks for the great drink, Sam! MORNING BREAKFAST: The Modern offers free continental breakfast for its guests. I grabbed a cranberry bagel and toasted it, jam, cream cheese, honey, Chobani vanilla greek yogurt, and a glass of freshly-squeezed orange juice. They also had freshly-squeezed grapefruit juice. Breakfast was divine. Everything was flavorful and fresh. Loved it. THE SERVICE: Joshua handed me a map of Boise, which was helpful. Michael and Paulie assisted me the second day with breakfast/taxi/accommodations. I needed to get around on a taxi and the ladies called me one and scheduled my shuttle service for the ride back to the airport. I want to give a huge thank you to all the staff at The Modern. They were super friendly, knew their stuff, and made my stay beyond enjoyable. THE TIPS: Free shuttle service to and from the airport in a white shuttle bus that says "Express" on it. Do not get duped by the taxi drivers into believing you do not have a shuttle to take you to your hotel!!! Spent another wonderful weekend in beautiful downtown Boise. The Modern helped us with pro accommodations for our entire trip. Both sons were with me and as usual we found plenty of fun right outside the doors. This time, from a fully furnished 1 bedroom condo! The renovated and updated building + suites in the recently added Modern apts. were perfect for us. Great kitchen, W/D, large bathroom and COMFY beds! Anyone considering Airbnb for their trip to Boise would be wise to check into these downtown options offered by the Modern fam. New hit eatery Txikiteo right downstairs, stores, venues and foothills all made for an enjoyable and memorable weekend with the loved ones. Would recommend. read more

This is a motel, not a hotel. Modern Motel is literally exactly what it is. A motel with an edgy facelift. The noise from the cars outside hasn't stopped, I can't sleep..it's a non stop stream of cars with enhanced mufflers which seems to be very common here in Boise? It's wild. They just keep coming. The worst part is my bed wasn't clean, a couple hairs and lint from clothing that wasn't mine. I called and they gave me new sheets to put on myself and the masked employee just nodded when he handed them over; zero apology. This really isn't cute, ever. But during covid???? COME ON. I was apprehensive at first, because I have never been to Boise, and when I think of it all I picture is potato farms . Neither here nor there, the modern was so elegant, yet simplistic at the same time. Luke at the front desk was amazing, and answered any question I had for him. Also, use the rentabikes! It was so convenient to get around town! On another tangent, the food was amazing. Everything on the menu was so creative and original. When I looked at the menu/read the descriptions, I thought there was a lot of conflicting flavors but, I was completely wrong. The chefs know what they are doing there. They construct a refreshing artwork for the palate. I would go back to the modern anytime, and hopefully will be back soon! read more

this is for the Bar only. The bar is situated in a former travel lodge with 60's period architecture. On street parking was convenient. we arrived around 6pm on Wednesday before Thanksgiving. Happy Hour was still on going. 4 mixed drinks for $32. The customers were a mix of the young, medium and older. the retired Boise State Professors turned art collectors were in their 70's. The four women to my right were cute, nice & in their thirties. The wait stuff was in their 30's. Our waiter/bartender was a thin hipster with an accent (french/Croatia?), it added to the ambiance. The reality, great place to grab a drink & spend time with a friend. The outside fire pits will be great in the summer. read more

This review is for the HOTEL ONLY: This is a cute idea, turning an old motel 6/red roof type motel into a hip boutique hotel. The bar and restaurant area were cute. Our room...pretty underwhelming. 2 double beds, almost no space, just ok furnishings. The bathroom was decent sized, HOWEVER the shower (which I grant was a huge, double head shower, took literally half of it, leaving room for just a small pedestal sink and no place to put anything except for the back of the toilet or a very small set of shelves on the wall. It seems like in their haste to open with as little expense as possible the owners just re-did the bathroom and bought some semi-modern furniture. Parking was also woefully lacking and the clerks at check-in weren't exactly helpful. Overall, have fun at the bar, enjoy the restaurant (which we didn't have a chance to try but the menu looked amazing), stay elsewhere. read more

A million stars for the Modern! Home to my favorite cocktail ever (the Layover - a smoky, bourbony concoction served with roasted pecans), the Modern is THE place I look forward to on my visits to Boise. We always make it a point to stop on my first night, and possibly a couple times after that. Their specialty cocktails never disappoint, and there is a nice selection of beer and wine. They do change their drink menu seasonally, so unfortunately no Layover for me last night - look for it later this month - but the bartender ended up making me an amazing drink based on my love of the other so disappointment only lasted a mere minute. As far as the food goes, they have the best cheese plate around. Choose 3 or all 5, they are served with (enough) crusty bread, sliced apples, those amazing roasted pecans, and a drizzle of balsamic reduction. Perfect to share with a group. Everything I've had to eat there has been excellent - last night we shared the cheese, kale salad, polenta, and the lamb meatballs. I recommend getting a few items for the table so you can taste a bit of everything. My only gripe is that the drinks are pricey, and while they do have happy hour, it never extends to what I'm ordering. Oh well, still worth it. read more

Found this place via recommendations on Yelp and decided to go with it. Pulling up to the front, it looks like a standard motel-style place, but as soon as you walk into the office, you know it's a totally different type of hotel. At first, I wasn't impressed - they were having computer problems, didn't have our reservation (had us coming down the following day) but luckily they had a cancellation and got us in. We were there with our baby and pet, and so when I checked out, they waived the pet fee for us. The room is super cool, with lots of room for our kid's pac n play, which was handy. We were just there for one night, but if we had stayed longer, we would have needed to give our kid a bath, and there isn't a tub. At least in the room we had, it was a shower that opened up right into the bathroom...very hip, but not practical for giving kids baths. read more

This place was recommended to me by a co-worker and I decided to take my wonderful husband on a date night there. I don't regret a minute! Although the place is small and packed, we found seats at the bar and were able to order appetizers and food. The portions are small but don't let that fool you because the food quality is amazing! I had the catfish and husband had the pork belly. Both were amazing and delicious, very well seasoned. Anyone who can cook catfish as a high end plate deserves 5 star. The drinks are really good too, they have some amazing signature drinks although I stick to my usual: Moscow Mules. read more

Modern Love: Cheap, Clean and Classy We couldn't be happier with our stay. When we arrived, we noticed that they were doing everything possible to comply with Covid precautions. There was a foot pull on the door, a sign about wearing masks, hand sanitizer, clean pens and a cup for dirty pens, and a masked employee. They also gave us bags with toiletries, coupons for a nearby restaurant since theirs was closed due to Covid, and some candy bars! Our room was spacious, simple, and clean. Their beds were comfortable, and I'm pretty sure the bathroom floor was heated. I checked out a bike and helmet on our second day. It was a quick and easy process, and was nice because I hadn't had room to bring our bikes along. We use the patio numerous times and it was absolutely beautiful! We enjoyed all the greenery. The staff members we interacted with were all very friendly and helpful, and seemed happy to be working there. Although it wasn't the fanciest place we stayed in on the trip and didn't have a pool, it was the most comfortable place we stayed, and it was the kids' favorite. That's saying something. read more

Spent a long weekend here at this interesting find. The neighborhood is seemingly sketchy and they warned us about noise giving us noise plugs, but it didn't seem any noisier than any other place I've stayed in a city. The bed was extremely comfortable, the room was just right for the price (around $150) and the atmosphere was friendly and helpful. Kudos to the young woman who was there every morning with a bright smile serving breakfast. She was very kind, efficient and just happy to be there as was everybody who work there. Our room was clean and really cute. The hotel is easy to find and close to downtown. There is a free breakfast which was good. I would have given them 5 stars except there were a couple amentities missing that I consider pretty basic. There is no microwave in the room which would be very nice to have. There is no mirror in the bedroom at all and the mirror in the bathroom up pretty high for a short person such as me to be able to use as a full size mirror and the lighting in bathroom isn't very good anyway for doing makeup. If you have a lighted travel mirror, bring it with you. There are also no towel racks or hooks in the bathroom other than inside the shower and that doesn't help with a hand towel at the sink. Other than these minor points, we enjoyed our stay and would likely stay again but I will bring a makeup mirror next time. They give you a couple pairs of free earplugs because they said it is noisy there, traffic and college kids and pall but we didn't find it to be all that noisy. ‍ read more

The Modern is a hip renovation of a Travelodge Motel, and the small area near check-in houses an energetic bar packed with a wide range of people from local to foreign. Both nights I stayed at the hotel were weeknights, and the bar was already booming early in the evening (I didn't see it later, but I imagine it only gets better). For dinner I had the gnocchi (uh...when in Idaho....DUH, potatoes!!!) which was a great twist on a dish that somethings sits dully somewhere in the back of my mind with pasta. This one, while it did have some fresh heirloom cherry tomatoes, also had beautiful beet greens, unique cheeses below and atop, and green beans. Really a nice dish. I followed it with a tiny three-dollar pot de creme, which was just enough to assuage the sweet tooth. Our service wasn't great, the place was busy, but not THAT busy, and our waitress wasn't present as often as she could have been. But the food was such an unexpected surprise for a small, boutique-style hotel. I would definitely stay, and eat, here again. read more

Mixed feelings. We're staying here right now. This place is a remodeled Travel Lodge and they've done a decent job with it. First impressions are key and I was pleased with the welcoming I received. I noticed the bar/restaurant while checking in and it was buzzing with activity. A good sign since we had planned to have brunch the following day and have dinner as well. The room is cute, but not super spacious. I LOVE the large shower. This place is dog friendly. We were moving and Boise was on the way from Vegas so it was nice to stay at a place that allowed our dogs. However... The following day we got brunch and decided to get it to go so that the dogs wouldn't be anxious hanging out by themselves. Apparently, a waitress told another waiter that there was a to go order and the chef was "super excited" about it (emphasizing the sarcasm in the tone). My partner felt fairly uncomfortable while he was having his drink waiting for the food. We have decided not to go back for dinner after that experience. Which is sad because the food was fairly good. Warning to service people, when you think no one is listening...They usually are. We have family in Idaho...And we unfortunately will not be returning. read more

My favorite place in Boise is here. I love the food, aesthetic, and the people. As a person with a dairy allergy, fooding can be hard but here it was wonderful. They would let me know if they could make it for me and if not there's always a vegan-ish option I could try! Plus the cocktails are bomb. I found myself preferring my Bloody Mary's be made with fish sauce because of the Modern. It's just amazing overall. Now that I'm done gushing over the modern like a 13 year old over the coolest band ever, go check them out! It's worth the trip! read more

I think staying at Hyatt place downtown or Red Lion would be a better pick for me. Continental breakfast has fresh squeezed orange juice or grapefruit, chocolate croissant or regular, fruit such as banana, orange or apple, cereal Raisin Bran, coconut, almond or regular milk, and that was it. I've had a broader breakfast before at a La Quinta. Had someone just get arrested outside of room. WiFi doesn't work, house keeping tried arriving a bit early like 9 am to clean the room. This place was recommended by a local bartender so we checked it out. We were pressured to a table when we were content to stand at the bar. We weren't really feeling thing the vibe so we ordered one cocktail to share. It wasn't good (Hemingway daiquiri). We went to close our tab, the bartender said they don't usually keep cards, but they had mine. Which was off putting. Overall they just seemed uninterested and indifferent to serving us and we won't be back. read more

This is one of my older reviews and deserves an update. I like and respect the Modern. Hipsters of all ages can, and do, congregate here so it is easier for me to blend in when my wife and I go. Not that I'm a hipster at any age, mind you. I think the reason for the 4 stars is really the drink menu. It's been a while for me but the bar makes really sophisticated stuff. The kitchen is small and, at times, uneven. I know this will sound negative but we took some visiting friends there last year and the pelmeni, a personal favorite food item for me, were in a broth that was unbelievably salty. It was embarrassing. On the other hand, I've had some very tasty cheeses and pickled devil egg snacks there. I respect their adventurous approach even if it doesn't always fire on all cylinders. And the little record players in the bathrooms are just darling. read more

If you took The Modern Hotel and plopped into the middle of Cochella you would have dozens of happy hipsters because this place is the coolest. From their own in-room curated film festival to the modern furnishing, the bike borrowing program to the cool bar/restaurant The Modern had everything I could want in a hotel room. They even have a music festival that takes place there I believe. It definitely used to be an old style hotel so the rooms have the quirky doors that open right up to the parking lot, but it wasn't loud or disruptive to my stay there. I loved the bed, the amenities, and the friendliness of the staff here. If you find yourself in the Boise area I would easily recommend The Modern as your place of temporary residency. read more

I definitely wasn't expecting this when I booked a hotel in Boise. I knew that there were some nice hotels in downtown Boise, but I really didn't expect a funky- hipster hangout- 50's throwback- chic boutique motel. I booked this place on Hotels.com, last minute, after staying with my friend was proving to be less than comfortable. The price was right, but when I pulled up I was a little nervous. It's called The Modern Hotel, not The Modern Motel, but it's a motel. I guess naming yourself motel doesn't do wonders for bringing in the cool crowd. I don't like motels in general, no matter how nice they are. They always seem like a fine place to be murdered in the middle of the night. I'm glad I gave it the benefit of the doubt and committed to staying. The rooms are very cute, but a bit small. I'm pretty sure the Queen bed is actually a Full size. The rain head shower was extremely pleasant, especially since they give you all Aveda products. Next to the bed was an iHome, which kept my iPhone charged without me having to dig out my charger. Everything felt brand new, and I never got the feeling I was going to leave with scabies. Usually you have to pay extra for that kind of peace of mind. My only real complaint is the lack of a bathtub, since I was freezing to death while staying with my friend and missed my tub at home more than I did my boyfriend. A mini fridge would have also been nice, and I think they have room for it since there was cabinets/storage galore in the place. Best of all, downstairs is a swanky little bar for visitors and locals in the know. In fact, I was at breakfast one day and the people next to me were talking about going to the Modern's bar to hang out later. They had a small but very appealing menu that I never got to try. I really was hoping to make time to order room service or eat in the bar, but it never happened. They have free parking in the 2 lots and on the street (no meters) but it seems like the front lot gets full pretty quickly, especially during happy hour. Some signs saying that the lot is for hotel guests only would be a nice touch. Make the booze hounds walk, don't make me tow my luggage half a block and then up the stairs (no elevators.) At least I wasn't paying $15 per night to park my rental car. All in all, it's a nice place. Cool place to hang out in the bar or outside by the fire pits. If I'm ever in need of a hotel in Boise again, this will probably be my place. read more

The website looks as if this place would be a funky, hip, cool place to stay. In reality, it's a refurbished travelodge. It's as if someone put retro decor in a Super 8. The saving grace is the bar. Great mixologist on site, fresh fruit squeeze, pleasant faces to greet you. Truly exceptional. Exceeded all expectations. Words fail me. And words NEVER fail me. Reduced to sentence fragments. Holy crap, this place is amazing. Warm, congenial service. Quirky, contemporary decor. In-room film festival (a channel devoted to short films from independent film-makers. During my stay it was Basque language films. OMG. Yes. YES!!) Monday night campfire stories?! Where local writers and poets read their work around the campfire. Holy shit, are you for real?! Are you reading this Angelenos?! Can you comprehend how uber-cool this is?! This is like a multiple orgasmic Nirvana, right here. Food and cocktails that would be the envy of any bar or eatery in Soho. When was the last time you drank a cocktail with wild hyssop in it? Hyssop they fricken hand picked in the wild with their bare hands. Or the bare hands of Chuck Norris. Whatever. I mean, take a look at some of these cocktails and tell me that you don't want to start hitchhiking to Boise post haste. Celery and Smoke Chimayo Blanco tequila, lime, celery juice, agave nectar, Del Maguey Chichicapa mezcal. The final Say Fernet Branca, lime, Green Chartreuse,Luxardo Maraschino. Pentatonic Depaz amber rhum agricole, Angostura bitters,Krogstad aquavit, Del Maguey Vida mezcal, demerara, grapefruit peel. Due Dilligence Ransom Old Tom Gin, Averna Amaro, giant hyssop. And the food. A TAD pricey given the portions, but that's a minor qualm considering the quality. As in: Best food I had while in Boise. Hands down. Amazingly affordable. I'd pay $250/night for a room half the size in aforementioned Soho. But this is Boise, you say. Yeah, and whatever that means to you, you are wrong, wrong, wrong. It's places like this that will set the standard for what a city will become. The Modern dares to dream not about what is, but about what could be. Let's just hope that not too many Californians like me realize that Boise in on the cusp of greatness; only to flood here in droves and ruin it all. They really should shoot invasive species like me crossing their border on sight. Except, it's not in their blood. They're just too goddamned NICE. Overheard: "We really shouldn't tell you how much we love Boise, because, well, you'll just move here and price us out of the market. But we can't help ourselves. We really love Boise, and we want to share this love with outsiders." Is this some sort of Narnia, pre-White Witch? Boise + 10 years = Austin Austin + 10 years = San Francisco San Francisco + 10 years = Pray for a 9.0 earthquake to make the place more like Boise 20 years ago. read more
