Hannah is like the most trusting yoga instructor I've ever seen, and her voice is just adorable. The yoga mats here are free, yet, not all are clean. Same applies to the kickboxing gloves. read more

I came here in January using the one month unlimited yoga classes via Groupon ($39). The studio was about 10 mins walk form my office so I came here about 2-3 times a week during their lunch classes - yoga and pilates. The class size is fairly small, ranges from 4 to 10 people, so you get pretty good attention from the instructor. I highly recommend taking the Thursday pilates class from jackie..she was super! This definitely was not a high end studio (not locker nor shower), but if you just want a place to release your stress and strengthen your core during work day, this is the place to be. read more

I signed up my then 8 year old daughter up at Modern Martial Arts in Tribeca 5 years ago, during an extremely challenging time of our lives. You see, I had become a single parent by default and she is an only child. In the absence of an extended family, I wanted my daughter to be surrounded by strong role models. I wanted her to develop self-confidence in mind and body. I wanted her to develop leadership skills and an esprit de corp of like-minded kids. I wanted her learn how to use physical power in an ethical and humane manner. I wanted her to learn that girls can be just as physically fierce as boys. And yes, I wanted her to develop college self-defense "insurance." LOL She's now 13 years old and proudly less than one year from earning her black belt. In these past 5 years, not only did she receive all the things I hoped for her, but we gained a courageous, encouraging, and loving family at Modern Martial Arts in Tribeca. I cannot recommend this program, instructors, management and village of fierce martial artists any stronger! read more

Supportive staff; excellent instructors that are very engaging and make learning martial arts challenging yet fun too

...I'm not a "yoga person." My chosen physical activities have more often included weaponry, and not hands-to-hearts'-centers. But everyone needs a little calm, and sometimes everyone needs an excuse to just BE somewhere for an hour and have your every move dictated, right? So I attended the hell out of Yoga & Pilates in Tribeca for a month with a Groupon. This name is even clunkier than their last! They were formerly Do Yoga Do Pilates (http://www.yelp.com/biz/do-yoga-do-pilates-new-york), a great donation-only studio, but that didn't last long. The space looks the same as in its DYDP days: small and humble (thanks Shakira), calming and clean. There are no showers, just bathrooms and changing rooms with cubbies. Nothing shiny about it. Having "Tribeca" in the name is almost misleading. That low-key feel is carried through to the classes themselves. Yoga or pilates (mat only) is held in one of two plain studios on the basement level. The smaller studio comfortably fits ~8 mats, the larger fits ~15. I like that both are below ground - subterranean yoga makes for much cozier, quieter practice... ...But let me qualify that. There are often martial arts classes going on on the ground floor, which can be a little disruptive. Worse, many early evening classes coincide with zumba in the adjacent studio. Especially toward the start of your class, it's impossible not to hear yelling, stomping, and the energetic twang of bachata. I didn't mind much. The instructors are all great at getting you to focus on the poses instead, taking time to explain and demonstrate. All classes are 1 hour long (they also have 45-min lunchtime classes) and open level, so not suitable for advanced yogis looking for crazy inversions. If you're in decent health, it's more calming than challenging. If anything, the influx of Groupon users meant that class composition was constantly changing, with plenty of newbies. Regularly, a 1-month unlimited membership is $109, and each class is $17 for drop-ins. Mat storage is free, but Groupon users must pay an extra $20/month to not have to lug their mat back and forth. Groupon-less, I couldn't attend enough to make membership worth it, but this is still a great studio and at the top of my list for when I want to start up again. More impressively, Y&PiT thoroughly dampened my cynicism and made me appreciate yoga as more than just a fad of commercialized cultural appropriation. (Sorry to end on a heavy note, but if you have an interest in yoga, it's not something to ignore.) read more

I'm about three weeks into using the 3-month unlimited Groupon that I purchased, and I'm absolutely loving this place. The Yoga & Pilates classes that I've attended are challenging, fun, and never overcrowded. Alice's yoga classes are my favorite (she has a calming presence about her and is great at challenging her students without pushing too hard), but so far I haven't had a class that I disliked. Also - the online sign-up system is really easy to use and the Groupon deal makes attending classes so affordable. Their normal pricing isn't outrageous either; I'll definitely consider staying on with them when my three months are up. read more

So I got really into kickboxing and yoga about 2 months ago and started exploring different studios, and therefore tried Hip+Fit and Yoga in Tribeca via Groupon because both shared the same location in Tribeca (along with Modern Martial Arts) which worked out perfectly for me. However, MMA and Hip+Fit shares the same area so the punching bags are in a corner and only moved out after the warm up. The classes are suppose to be 1-hour long as per their schedule, but really, the 6:00PM class ends at 6:45PM so MMA can start their 7PM class. With that said, your workout does not slack at all. You are still sweating bullets and getting your ass kicked throughout the whole warm up, bag punching, and "cool down". The workout in itself is definitely a workout if you push yourself. The instructors isn't as motivating as the others I have had in the past and since then, but they are upbeat, energetic, and friendly. I personally prefer the male over female instructor as he posed tougher workouts. There is also a section of the workout where we take turns holding a punching pad for each other - I definitely wasn't a fan of that mainly because holding it hurts. There are no gloves provided so the instructor will tell you to do an alternative if punching the bag hurts and you don't have gloves aka "push the bag with force using your palms". DON'T DO IT! I was still new to kickboxing at that time so I just thought maybe this is just a different technique? After doing that for 1-2 classes, my wrist started to hurt miserably with any type of force/weight. This meant I had to take off and rest it, including Yoga because something as simple as planking on my wrists hurt. Initially I was going to take a week off, and because I was on a Groupon deal for 30-days for both gyms, I called to ask if they can postpone both my deals, and they said no... There was nothing they can do... Which doesn't matter now because after 2.5 weeks, my wrist is still hurting and very slowly recovering. I have attended at least 10-12 classes at both Hip+Fit & Yoga in Tribeca back-to-back for 2-2.5 weeks for them to know who I was at that point, and it just felt like a slap to the face when they said no. Now, even if I was considering to join their membership after my Groupon deal is over or even try their MMA classes, I will just not. There are so many studios out there that what it really comes down to is how you treat your customers. From my experience, they didn't care for their customers and injuries that are derivative from their studio to do anything in hopes to keep them, which is sad because I really loved the studio. Overall, the Hip+Fit classes were good cardio workouts that really pushes you (if you're self-motivated). However, do yourself a favor and bring gloves and/or wrist wraps to protect your wrists. Just think about it, even people who uses gloves would wrap their wrists! As a beginner, I really expected the instructors to be more professional and know that their so-called alternative can be, and is prone to, injuries. Stay active and be smart. read more

I've been going to this location of Hip+Fit pretty consistently since August 2015 - yep, I'm one of those Groupon-to-purchase people. First, there are no men. I guess kickboxing is more geared towards women, but it should be noted in case you prefer to exercise around women. There are locker rooms downstairs but some people for these classes don't use it and leave their stuff upstairs, so that's up to you. No showers. Bring water. The class is 45 minutes and is usually bookended by youth/adult karate. I would suggest fingerless gloves or wraps; the clunky boxing gloves aren't really necessary. This is a full body workout that can be intense but is beginner friendly. The teachers are great and classmates are cool, so I really can't complain. You're there to push yourself but if you have an injury or not used to some moves, there are modifications. Staff remember you too, and that's always nice. read more

Great classes for the kids! The instructors are excellent and keep the students focused, calling them out when needed and recognizing excellence as well. Mr. Bergos has been a great inspiration for my son, showing him that strong men aren't bullies, hard work pays off and helping him with both physical strength and mental focus. True, the junior classes (up to age 7) reward based on number of classes attended, but provide the physical exercise and framework for respect that will serve as a foundation. read more

Came here for a monthlong trial only for pilates. They don't have any morning classes so I had to do the weeknight and weekend ones. The classes rarely had over six students, which was nice since we got a lot of the instructors' attention, but I found many of them lacking rigor or diversity. Sometimes there were large chunks of time devoted to child pose and down dog - I prefer my pilates practice to differ from yoga and more resemble strict pilates where the focus is on toning muscles and strengthening abs. They do do that here, too, but just inadequately in my opinion. I also prefer the classes to be fast-paced and choreographed to music with good beats, and some instructors don't play music at all. There's a martial arts training studio upstairs so the walls and exposed pipes could be constantly shaking during class; some might find that distracting. Besides the small class size, another upside is most of the instructors are very personable and will offer assists or personalized adjustments. read more

I came here a handful of times for lunch-time yoga classes and was disappointed. When I take a good yoga class, I always leave completely blissful and practically float through my afternoon or evening, which was not the case with these classes. A few reviewers mentioned that the environment can be loud because it's located in a martial arts studio but in my opinion, the teacher is much more important. I've taken some amazing classes at other yoga spots with the sound of Manhattan traffic right outside the windows and subways shaking the floors every few minutes. At this place, I only took classes with one teacher so I can't speak for the rest of them, but while she seemed to be pretty knowledgable about the poses, her mannerism was short - not very yogi-like at all - and she repeatedly corrected students in a very abrupt, borderline condescending way. I was hoping to be able to escape the stress of my work during lunch but unfortunately there was nothing zen about these classes. I prefer to track to the LES for some real yoga. read more

This review is for the Tribeca location. The classes/instructors are usually fun and challenging and the music is on point. So why three stars? Because of their class usage policy. I initially found out about Hip + Fit through Groupon and liked it so much that I've purchased multiple 10-class packs since then. Over the past few months work and life were pretty hectic so I wasn't able to make it in as often as I would've liked. When I came in earlier this week, I was informed that my membership had expired and if I wanted to use my remaining six classes, I'd have to buy another 10-class pack. What's the point of memberships expiring? Once I've paid in full I should be able to use my classes whenever my schedule allows me to. I wasn't planning on dropping $175 that night, but I did it anyway so that I wouldn't lose those six classes. If their policy was a little more flexible, it would be 4-5 stars. read more

MMA Tribeca has been a lifesaver throughout Covid. Our son (now 8) has been going for four or five years, and we have always been so impressed with the instructors, the format, everything. He has so much fun, but also learns important lessons and self-discipline. As great as they were, when Covid hit and they started zoom lessons, they really took it to the next level. In both their virtual summer camp and weekly lessons, these instructors are gifted teachers that have been such a wonderful activity for not just our son, but also our 10 yr old daughter who wanted to join after seeing how much fun our son was having. Ms. S, Mr. B and Mr. S are so great, and we are so thankful that we have them, and MMA, as part of our family. Can't wait until we can get back to normal in person lessons, but until then, so happy to have the virtual ones. read more

This is for the TriBeCa location. First things first, there is no terrible odor emanating from the space. After a month of attending classes, the only time it smelled was due to an unnamed class attendee (seriously sweetie, that smell is not right). On to the workout. This isn't tradition kickboxing. You spend, at most, 10-15 mins at the bags. The rest of the time is jumping jacks, lunges, squats, and enough ab work to make you want to kill someone. It's a solid workout. Last thing, this seems to be women only though I've not seen anything actually barring men. The women are in varying states of fitness but there's no overt judgment. You come in, she busts your ass and then you leave with your endorphins coursing through your veins. Good deal. p.s. They often have a groupon. read more

I truly cannot say enough good things about their dedicated staff, led by Mr. Phipps, and the positive changes that this has brought about in our child's ability to focus, his strength, coordination, respect for others, and his discipline. My son has been with MMA Tribeca for more than four years. He has learned an appreciation for martial arts, but the instruction doesn't stop there. The instructors discuss respect for others, watching out for bullying and how to respond, and that martial arts is for defense (for yourself and others). The kids take it seriously and also have fun. I purchased a Groupon so that I can attend YOGA & PILATES in TRIBECA. This studio is very convenient to my work place and the instructors are all super helpful and are really there to teach you yoga and pilates. I especially loved the pilates sessions which were a pep to my work day. I felt very energized and happy after each session. I will probably will come back once I figure out how to pay the monthly tab of $100 tab which can be steep. The afternoon pilates sessions consisted of about 6-8 students which is ideal for both the student and the teacher. The yoga classes in the evening tends to be crowded since its after hours and after work...FYI more men in those classes. :) read more

I bought this deal on groupon. It was really cheap so I thought I'd check it out with a friend. First and foremost, it's a pretty small studio. There was a karate class prior to ours so we waited on the bench. Since there's a lot going on in terms of activities, the place was congested and really hot. I also smell a lot of feet because you're not allowed to wear your shoes on the mat. Prior to going, I called the place and inquired if they had boxing gloves and they advised that they don't use boxing gloves there. I thought that was weird because, coming from cko, boxing gloves are a necessity. Anyway, the class was advertised as an hour class but it's really only 45 minutes. That to me is false advertisement. 10 minutes of the class is warm up and the last 10-15 is stretching and cooling down. In between, it's a mixture of cardio and a bit of kickboxing. It really depends on the instructor. Some incorporates more cardio than kickboxing and others more kickboxing than cardio. Also, I advised for you to bring gloves. Although you don't have to use gloves, your hands will be hurting. You won't be as efficient without the gloves because you're too afraid to exert your full strength. I feel this class is more for beginners because it really didn't do anything for me. I broke a sweat maybe because the room was super hot and not because I had a good workout. Coming from cko, it wasn't straight cardio kickboxing. There were too many breaks because the instructor had to pull out the punching bags and equipments onto the floor whereas with cko it's right in front of you. Sometimes you have to share bags or wait until your turn if there's a lot of people in that class. It sucks when you're getting into the momentum then having to stop because the next person has to go and your left there just waiting idle. Overall, it didn't do anything for me working out wise but the people are really nice and friendly. The groupon deal was a great price so I'll recommend for you to try it. There are way better kickboxing classes out there. I would not waste my money to sign up as a member. read more

The yoga studios are in a basement, and most times you can hear the martial arts classes stomping around and shouting from upstairs. You can also feel vibrations from the martial arts classes - definitely not an ideal situation for yoga. The yoga rooms and locker rooms are dirty. Reasonably priced but definitely not a high end yoga studio. read more

I thought the class was a lot of fun and if you have never had the joy of jumping and taking out a punching bag, you should really try it. I never met an instructor I didn't like. (There are maybe 4?) The classes are very small and I found everyone to be very encouraging. They are excellent at remembering your name here and stuff like that goes a long way with me. I started taking class because I got the 1 month Groupon. Ill be honest, the classes aren't challenging at all. You box very little--I'd estimate only about 10 minutes of class is dedicated to actually hitting the bag--because the 78 Reade location is super small and there's not enough space for the punching bags. I wouldn't recommend going unless you get the Groupon. CKO is around the same price per month, and they have more bags, better instructors, and actually challenging classes. read more

As others have pointed out, the classes are overcrowded but I don't think this is a big deal. It teaches the kids how to deal with the adversity of crowds, which is a useful lesson. The teachers are great; attentive to a high degree and dedicated. My son loves the classes. Their is a corrupt premise to the system that is hard to overlook. The instructors motivate the kids to "graduate" to a higher belt (or stripe). Graduation is determined simply by attendance -- who is bring in money for the program. And to add insult to injury, they charge $50 for the graduation ceremony. My son has picked up on this corruption and it takes away from his dedication. read more

Pros: Reasonable prices, very professional and friendly staff, knowledgeable instructors, good location, well organized, clean and tidy, good lighting in the studios. Cons: No mirrors in any of the studios on the lower level which is a pity since it is useful to check your form in the mirror and ensure that your posture is correct for pilates and yoga. Also, you can definitely hear the martial arts on the ground floor level when you're attending a pilates/yoga class on the lower level, which is annoying since both pilates/yoga require some form of meditation/relaxation. Would be great if the martial arts and pilates/yoga classes don't overlap. read more

I purchased a groupon for this class and I've got to say, I LOVE IT! First of, the place is very clean. I was expecting the regular sweat smell that you get at other places but this location (Tribeca) does not smell at all. The floors are very clean, the bathroom is well kept and everything seems to be in order. I got there about 10 minutes late, (damn you 9-5 jobs!) but the instructor did not make me feel bad about this at all. He actually came over right away and said hello. The class was a workout non stop from the moment I got there. I've never sweated that much in my life, (sorry for the graphics). Although it was a great workout, I also had A LOT of fun. The instructor makes you feel comfortable, plays music that is upbeat, encourages you as opposed to yelling at you and being nasty, and he is actually very funny. I was worried that I was going to be intimidated by the instructor and the other students but it was a very welcoming environment. The workout was tough. It makes you push yourself to places you didn't think you could make it to. There is about 10 minutes at the bags and the rest is a typical workout: jumping jacks, abs, running, etc. I came out of there hurting in places I didn't even know excited! The only bad thing about this place were the girls in the front. For some reason, they just didn't seem to want to be bothered. They were looking at the computer the entire time I was there and even after, when I was trying to sign up for the next class, they were just dismissive. Overall, this is a great place. No smell, good workout, and a good instructor. read more

This studio has a special place in my heart because it's the first studio that really got me into yoga. There are some really good teachers who I've followed to other studios (Yoganesh, YogaVida). There are some bad teachers - inexperienced, don't correct improper alignment, don't give clear directions or help out the newbies, do the class with class rather than guide/assist. What I really love about this place is that the classes are small and sometimes I've been in a class where it's just one or two other people. The other attendees are also really friendly and warm and people are of all different ages and sizes. :) I used to do a monthly membership here, but now travel outside of the neighborhood to go to another studio that has more classes, better teachers and is the same price. read more

I have the highest opinion of Modern Martial Arts (MMA), where my daughter attends classes 3-4 times a week. As a psychologist, I have found that MMA has been the most valuable extracurricular activity she has ever had, for both physical and mental discipline. In addition to the physical confidence the program cultivates, both the teachers' integrity and the training program itself instill an ethical code analogous to spiritual training: be mindful of and responsible for your actions; respect authority; be considerate of and concerned for others; don't bully or be bullied; and find ways to avoid/ minimize conflict while still sticking up for your principles. In addition, the community MMA provides is warm, mature, and filled with a healthy dose of playfulness and humor, reflecting the instructors' personalities. Overall, I could not be happier with the role MMA plays in shaping our daughter's character and self-image. read more

I just left a review on the yelp page for Do Yoga Do Pilates - I think that was the former name. On the doors of the entrance it says Yoga and Pilates in Tribeca which is the new name. Wasn't sure what this place was going to be like because it's a martial arts school. Basically, this place is great. Unpretentious, real people just doing their yoga, under the guidance of great great instructors. Exactly my thing. Some minor improvements could be made, sure. But value-wise? Impressive. read more

A fantastic program for kids!! The teachers and staff are wonderful, they work with each child's level of competence and challenge them to do their best. The teachers also talk to the kids about life skills (bullying, accepting oneself, taking responsibility) and truly model them, so the kids learn to respect themselves and others. MMA is a great place for kids to learn about respect, integrity and focus. Mr. Phipps is absoutley great with the kids - my 6 year old absolutley loves him. Mr. Phipps is "tough" to the right point without coming across as mean in the kids (and the parents') eyes. He stimulates the kids by pushing them to go the extra mile and try harder, consistent with how we are raising our children. Keep it up MMA and thank you Mr. Phipps! read more
