Great little museum right at the edge of the Mt. Dora downtown. A one big room exhibit of the Memphis group's art and furniture. Also has several pieces that were owned by David Bowie. In fact, the few David Bowie pictures themselves are worth seeing up close. And it's only $8 to enter. If you take it all in and read the placards and watch the video, it's probably 45-60 minutes or you can power through in 15. Definitely unique and a must for anyone into modern art. read more

Best $8 I've spent in I don't know how long! I'm a museum nerd and I had been meaning to visit this one for some time. Parking, on a busy Saturday, can be tricky but drive around a bit and you'll spot something. Right now, I highly recommend visiting the Memphis exhibit. I won't explain, but I will leave it to the lovely Maggie to guide you on your way. I absolutely loved my first visit to MM and would happily return. Save your receipt and visit the gift shop across the street for a 10% discount. Once you exit, you'll likely enjoy a walk around the very charming Mount Dora shopping and dining district. Modernism museum with a nice collection of Furniture that made an impact on the early 80s. David Bowie was a higher fan. Make sure to watch the film and learn the history of this movement. 8/11/23 - Who knew an historic little town like Mt Dora would have this Gem? It's hours like other places in town are reduced during the summer, so but we made it a point to stop before heading home on Friday when it opened. So very glad we did. At the time of our visit it had an outstanding Post Modernism exhibit, with a number of pieces that had been owned by David Bowie. The admission is modest and we were given a warm greeting and a quick overview by the receptionist. She encouraged us to view the video in the back of the museum. I asked if photography and sharing of photos was permitted and was told yes, there were no restrictions. We found it helpful to view some of the exhibit pieces before walking directly back to the video, then more slowly revisiting the items we'd seen. Then, taking in the remainder of the exhibit. I'd have liked to return to the video once more but we had a schedule we needed to keep. Although the post modernism style isn't my personal favorite, this is quite a fascinating exhibit with a wide variety of pieces that are outstanding examples of the design. Taking a day trip to Mt Dora? This cute modern museum is easily missed with everything else Mt Dora has to offer, I honestly didn't even know they had a museum lol I am a fan of modern art and decided to check it out after noticing a groupon deal. Several pieces of art are new and authentic, recommend watching their short demo video to get more of an insight of where their art comes from and its origin. If you are into decorating your home, interior design, modern, or contemporary art youll appreciate this museum. If you are just coming for cute IG pics, you can get some cool shots but can't touch any of the pieces lol Overall I enjoyed this museum, it doesn't take much time, and once you've seen it doesn't require many frequent visits (unless you want to). I would recommend checking it out once if you can, its a fun daytime/rainy day activity. read more

Who knew that Mount Dora had a great modern art museum downtown? We stumbled upon this place yesterday and are very glad we did! The museum is currently featuring an exhibit called Memphis showcasing some of this furniture design movement's signature pieces. David Bowie was a big collector of this work so pieces marked with a star are from David's personal collection. The curators mixed in tastefully displayed photos of David Bowie throughout the collection. Start with the short video in the back that provides the requisite background on Memphis and then walk around and enjoy the creative and vibrant furniture pieces on display. A unique and fun find in downtown Mount Dora. read more

While visiting Mt. Dora today, a lovely necklace in a window display caught my eye. When I stopped to give it a closer look, I also noticed some pictures of David Bowie, who I was a huge fan of back in the day. That was when I realized that the business in question was the Modernism Museum. So I decided to check it out. The museum is small but the pieces inside are very colorful and quirky. The young man at the front desk was very knowledgeable and recommended that I start off by watching the 20 minute video which gives the visit an overview of the exhibit. I am glad I did because it helped me to appreciate the pieces all the more. The objects on display is mainly furniture which can double as pieces of fine art. My favorites were the lucite chair with the silk roses floating in in and the vanity which resembled an art deco hotel. A lot of the furnishings came from David Bowie's estate. This place is a definitely MUST for modernism aficionados and Bowie fans alike. The museum is actually part of a complex. The museum's gift shop and the 1921 Restaurant are located directly across the street. That's where I purchased the necklace which initially drew me to the museum in the first place! read more

The museum was very unique and beautiful. Pretty small. People working at front were very nice, helpful, and willing to teach us about the artists. Many pieces were furniture in the exhibit and they had free audio tours to go along with it. They also had an informational video about the exhibit. Overall, would come back for the next collection! read more

Admission is $8 per person. Nice video intro of the history of the pieces, and very well kept and clean exhibits. However, it's a showroom of furniture that can be finished in 30 minutes if you read all the signs and for that reason I don't think it's worth the entry fee. Other than that, very neat pieces and incredible craftsmanship. read more

When we visited, it was the day after the museum had some sort of event. A lot of the exhibits had been rearranged to accommodate the event but had not, according to the person who took our money, been replaced to their appropriate spots. Consequently, the placards for the audio tour had little relevance to what they were in front of which lead to a confusing and, ultimately, pointless experience. After ten minutes, my wife and gave up trying to use it. Additionally, there was a huge pile of convention hall-type chairs heaped in the middle of the exhibit space which caused such a jarring juxtaposition that it diminished the experience of the museum. It felt haphazardly thrown together and, to me, disrespected the lovely collection. The one employee there did apologize for the mess but it just shouldn't have been like that. I had hoped for a better visit. read more

A treat for all mid century modern lovers. The Mount Dora Modernist Museum offers an in depth perspective of the modern masters. The docents have a passion for the subject matter and it shows. One would expect a showing of this quality to be in New York or LA but it is great to see Mount Dora step up artistic plate. Stop reading and go! read more
